[Machine] To forgive the polytheists even if they were close kin. [Surah At-Tawbah 113]
9.44 [Machine] Who did not see the washing from washing the dead person?
[Machine] He said, "You don't have to wash your dead if you have already washed them." And it was narrated to us from 'Ata and Sa'id ibn Jubayr on the authority of ibn 'Abbas, 6668, and it was also narrated to us from another source from 'Ata on the authority of ibn 'Abbas in a marfu' narration, "Don't make your dead impure, for a Muslim is not impure whether alive or dead." And it was narrated to us in that regard from Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqas, ibn 'Umar, ibn Mas'ud, and 'Aisha, and all of that is mentioned in the book of purification.
9.45 [Machine] The woman dies with men, there is no woman with them.
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "When a woman dies among men, there should not be another woman present except her, and when a man dies among women, there should not be another man present except him. They should be shrouded and buried, and they are in the same category as someone who cannot find water. This is a transmitted hadith from Sinan ibn Gharafa from the Prophet ﷺ regarding a man who dies among women and a woman who dies among men. Neither of them should be washed, rather they should be shrouded and buried."
[Machine] "And concerning Al-Hasan al-Basri, water is poured on it from above the clothes. And similarly, Ata' bin Abi Rabah said."
9.46 [Machine] Jamaat Abwab Al-Kafan, Wa Kayfa Al-Hanout
9.47 [Machine] The Sunnah in shrouding a man in three garments without a shirt or turban.
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was wrapped in three white burial garments, without a shirt or turban, according to the narration of Malik. In the narration of Thawri, she said that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was wrapped in three red burial garments, without a shirt or turban.
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was shrouded in three white cotton garments, without a shirt or headdress.
[Machine] The wife of the Prophet ﷺ said, when Abu Bakr's illness became severe, I cried and fainted. When I regained consciousness, I said, "Long live the one whose tears never cease flowing, for he is in a great sorrow." Abu Bakr woke up and said, "It is not as you said, my dear daughter, but [it is the verse] 'The stupor of death has come with the truth. That is what you tried to avoid' [Quran 50:19]." Then he asked, "On which day did the Messenger of Allah ﷺ pass away?" I said, "On Monday." He asked again, "Which day is it today?" I said, "Monday." He said, "Then I hope for the period between me and the night [only]." She said, "He passed away on Tuesday night and was buried before dawn." She asked, "How was the Messenger of Allah ﷺ shrouded?" He said, "We shrouded him in three white new unstitched garments without a shirt or a turban." She said, "I said to him, 'Wash my garment with it and use it for dyeing with saffron or some other fragrance, and wrap him in two new garments with it." Aisha said, "So I said to him, 'Indeed, he is a man, and the living one is more in need of the new one than the dead. It is only for the respite.'"
[Machine] He said, "I asked Aisha, 'In how many clothes was the Messenger of Allah ﷺ shrouded?' She said, 'In three white garments.'"
9.48 [Machine] Mentioning the news that contradicts what we have narrated about the shroud of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was shrouded in three Najrani garments. There were two wraparound garments and his shirt in which he died. Uthman said he was shrouded in three red garments and his shirt in which he died.
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ was shrouded in two white garments and a piece of Hibra cloth.
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was wrapped in three cloths, two of which were made of coarse fabric and one of which was made of fine white linen.
9.49 [Machine] Statement of Aisha, regarding the confusion about it on others.
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was shrouded in three white garments made of coarse kurshed fabric, which did not include a shirt or a turban. As for the garment, it was only similar to what people perceived as a garment that was bought for him to be shrouded in. The garment was left, so Abdullah bin Abu Bakr took it and said, "I will keep it for myself until I am shrouded in it." Then he said, "If Allah ﷻ had been pleased with it for His Prophet ﷺ, He would have shrouded him in it." So he sold it and donated its price.
I would be shrouded in it, but then said: How is it that I should be shrouded in it in which the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was not shrouded! So he gave it in charity. (Using translation from Muslim 941b)
“They used to claim that he was shrouded in Hibarah.” ‘Aishah said: “They brought a Hibarah Burd, but they did not shroud him in it.” (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 1469)
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , was wearing a garment made of hibara (a type of cloth), but he later took it off. Al-Qasim said, "We still have some remnants of that garment." The sheikh, may Allah have mercy on him, said, "The one who sold Abdullah ibn Abu Bakr and donated its price, is the one who was wearing the garment. And the garment they had is two garments, as al-Qasim said that its remnants are with us, it is the third garment in which they claimed he was shrouded. Aisha clarified with a clear explanation that the two garments they called "hullat" and the coolness of hibara were brought, but he was not shrouded in them. Instead, he was shrouded in three white garments, without a shirt or a turban. Allah knows best.
9.50 [Machine] The evidence for the permissibility of shrouding in a single garment.
We migrated with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in the path of Allah seeking Allah's pleasure alone. Thus our reward was assured with Allah. And amongst us were those who spent life (in such a state of piety and austerity) that nothing consumed their reward. Mus'ab b. 'Umair was one of them. He was killed on the Day of Uhud, and nothing but a woollen cloak was found to shroud him. When we covered his head with it, his feet became uncovered, and when we covered his feet, his head was uncovered. Upon this the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Place it (this cloak) on the side of his head and cover his feet with grass. And there is one amongst us for whom the fruit is ripened and he enjoys it. (Using translation from Muslim 940a)
Once a meal was brought to ʿAbdur-Rahman bin ʿAuf and he was fasting. He said, "Mustab bin ʿUmar was martyred and he was better than I and was shrouded in his Burd and when his head was covered with it, his legs became bare, and when his legs were covered his head got uncovered. Hamza was martyred and was better than I. Now the worldly wealth have been bestowed upon us (or said a similar thing). No doubt, I fear that the rewards of my deeds might have been given earlier in this world." Then he started weeping and left his food. (Using translation from Bukhārī 1275)
[Machine] When the polytheists withdrew from the battle of Uhud, the Prophet ﷺ sat alone. A woman came carrying dead bodies, and the Prophet ﷺ said, "This woman, this woman." When she came closer, he realized that it was his mother Safiyyah, so he said, "Oh mother, go back." She replied, "I have no place to go." He said, "Verily, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ will take care of you." She then gave him two pieces of cloth and said, "Use these to shroud my two brothers." The Prophet ﷺ found next to him a man from the Ansar who did not have a shroud, so we decided it would be best to use the two pieces of cloth to shroud Hamzah and the Ansari man. We tore the cloth and each of them were shrouded in the cloth that was best suited for them.
9.51 [Machine] The translation of the heading is: "The permission to wrap the deceased in clothes and indeed, we used to choose what was chosen for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ".
[Machine] Jabir bin Abdullah heard the Prophet ﷺ saying, "He came to the grave of Abdullah bin Ubay after he was buried and he ordered him to be dug out and placed him on his knees or thighs and then blew on him from his saliva and dressed him in his own shirt. And Allah knows best."
[Machine] About Sufyan, it has been said that the Prophet ﷺ intended with what he did to bless him for what he had done, and Allah knows best. 6687 Abu Amr Al-Adib informed us that Abu Bakr Al-Isma'ili informed us that Ibn Najiyah narrated to us from Ishaq who narrated from Sufyan, and he mentioned the hadith and added, Sufyan said, "Perhaps the Prophet ﷺ rewarded him with that shirt."
When ʿAbdullah bin 'Ubai died, his son ʿAbdullah bin ʿAbdullah came to Messenger of Allah ﷺ and asked him to give him his shirt in order to shroud his father in it. He gave it to him and then ʿAbdullah asked the Prophet ﷺ to offer the funeral prayer for him (his father). Messenger of Allah ﷺ got up to offer the funeral prayer for him, but ʿUmar got up too and got hold of the garment of Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ Will you offer the funeral prayer for him though your Lord has forbidden you to offer the prayer for him" Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "But Allah has given me the choice by saying: '(Whether you) ask forgiveness for them, or do not ask forgiveness for them; even if you ask forgiveness for them seventy times..' (9.80) so I will ask more than seventy times." ʿUmar said, "But he (ʿAbdullah bin 'Ubai) is a hypocrite!"
Abu Bakr came riding his horse from his dwelling place in As-Sunh. He got down from it, entered the Mosque and did not speak with anybody till he came to me and went direct to the Prophet, who was covered with a marked blanket. Abu Bakr uncovered his face. He knelt down and kissed him and then started weeping and said, "My father and my mother be sacrificed for you, O Allah's Prophet! Allah will not combine two deaths on you. You have died the death which was written for you." Narrated Abu Salama from Ibn ʿAbbas : Abu Bakr came out and ʿUmar , was addressing the people, and Abu Bakr told him to sit down but ʿUmar refused. Abu Bakr again told him to sit down but ʿUmar again refused. Then Abu Bakr recited the Tashah-hud (i.e. none has the right to be worshipped but Allah and Muhammad is Messenger of Allah ﷺ) and the people attended to Abu Bakr and left ʿUmar. Abu Bakr said, "Amma ba'du, whoever amongst you worshipped Muhammad, then Muhammad is dead, but whoever worshipped Allah, Allah is alive and will never die. Allah said: 'Muhammad is no more than an Apostle and indeed (many) Apostles have passed away before him ..(up to the) grateful.' " (3.144) (The narrator added, "By Allah, it was as if the people never knew that Allah had revealed this verse before till Abu Bakr recited it and then whoever heard it, started reciting it.")
Um Al-ʿAla', an Ansari woman who gave the pledge of allegiance to the Prophet ﷺ said to me, "The emigrants were distributed amongst us by drawing lots and we got in our share ʿUthman bin Maz'un. We made him stay with us in our house. Then he suffered from a disease which proved fatal when he died and was given a bath and was shrouded in his clothes, Messenger of Allah ﷺ came I said, 'May Allah be merciful to you, O Abu As-Sa'ib! I testify that Allah has honored you'. The Prophet ﷺ said, 'How do you know that Allah has honored him?' I replied, 'O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! Let my father be sacrificed for you! On whom else shall Allah bestow His honor?' The Prophet ﷺ said, 'No doubt, death came to him. By Allah, I too wish him good, but by Allah, I do not know what Allah will do with me though I am Messenger of Allah ﷺ. ' By Allah, I never attested the piety of anyone after that." Al-Laith also narrated as above. (Using translation from Bukhārī 1243)
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ entered upon Uthman ibn Mazh'un while he was dead, he uncovered his face and poured water on him, then he kissed him and cried until I saw tears flowing down his cheeks.
[Machine] From his face, he made the companions of the Prophet ﷺ dissuade me from this, while the Prophet ﷺ did not dissuade me from this. My aunt started crying, so the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Do not cry, what makes you cry? The angels continued to shade him with their wings until they lifted him."
[Machine] I heard my father saying, "I think he heard it from his teacher, and his teacher was Maqil ibn Yasar, when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ placed Nuaim ibn Masud in the grave, he removed the company of the grave with him." His saying, "I think he narrated it from Al-Duriyy," and Abu Dawud narrated it in Al-Marasil from Abbad ibn Musa and Sulaiman ibn Dawud Al-Attaki that Khalaf ibn Khalifa narrated to them from his father, who said, "He informed him that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ mentioned him."
[Machine] Set it free into its hole, and when you place it in its cavity, say "Bismillah" and according to the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , then release the tie from its head and tie from its legs.
9.59 [Machine] The Sunnah in Punishment
[Machine] In his illness in which he died, they strictly confined me and poured milk unto me as it was done to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ .
[Machine] That Abu Ubaidah bin al-Jarrah used to prepare for the Messenger of Allah by making arrangements for his stay in Makkah, while Abu Talha Zaid bin Sahl would do the same for the people of Madinah. Al-Abbas called two men, took hold of their necks, and said, "Go to Abu Ubaidah and go to Abu Talha. O Allah, reveal to the Messenger of Allah which of them has prepared a place for him." So the companion of Abu Talha, Abu Talha himself, was found, but the companion of Abu Ubaidah, Abu Ubaidah himself, was not found. Thus, he made arrangements for the Messenger of Allah, as narrated by Anas bin Malik, in summary.
[Machine] The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: "Lahd (i.e., the grave) is for us, while the narrowness (of the grave) is for others." This has also been narrated from Jarir ibn Abdullah as a raised (i.e., authenticated) hadith.
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Lahd is for us and shiqq is for others, just as... "
