9. Funerals (3/14)
[Machine] The wife of the Prophet ﷺ informed him that when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed away, he was wrapped in a cold burial cloth.
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was wrapped in a garment made of ink.
9.26 [Machine] Preserving the Sunnah of the People of Islam in Matters of the Deceased
[Machine] Rather, do to me what you did to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ . Pour milk over me and sprinkle me with dust.
[Machine] In his illness in which he died, they poured milk for me (as it was done) for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ
9.27 [Machine] The necessity of performing actions in funerals - from washing, shrouding, praying, and burial - until someone who is capable of doing so does it
[Machine] I heard the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , say that the right of a Muslim upon another Muslim is five: returning the greeting of peace, visiting the sick, attending funerals, accepting invitations, and blessing the sneezer.
[Machine] I traveled with the Prophet (PBUH) more than once, and I never saw him pass by the grave of a person without ordering it to be buried. He would not ask if the deceased was a Muslim or a disbeliever. And others narrated from Ibn Abi Uwais through his chain of narration from Umar ibn Abdullah ibn Ya'la ibn Murrah al-Thaqafi from his father who said: I heard Ya'la ibn Murrah say, and he mentioned it to us, that Abu Bakr al-Asbahani informed him that Ali ibn Umar al-Daraqutni reported from Al-Husayn ibn Isma'il al-Mahamili who reported from Abdullah ibn Shabeeb who reported from Ibn Abi Uwais, and he mentioned it.
[Machine] He said that the people found a dead woman in the desert and they passed by her without lifting her head, until a man from the tribe of Layth called Kulayb, a poor man, passed by her and threw his garment over her. He then sought help from someone to bury her. Umar called his son Abdullah and asked if he had passed by this dead woman. He replied no. Umar said, "If you had informed me that you passed by her, I would have punished you." Umar then stood between the people and was angry with them for their behavior, and he said, "Perhaps Allah will enter Kulayb into Paradise because of his deed towards her." While Kulayb was performing ablution at the mosque, Abu Lu'lu'ah, the killer of Umar, attacked him and stabbed him. Nafi' said that Abu Lu'lu'ah killed seven people along with Umar. This narration is also reported by Salim bin Abdullah bin Umar from his father with similar meaning.
9.28 [Machine] What is preferred in hastening its preparation when his death becomes evident?
[Machine] Talhah ibn al-Bara' fell ill, so the Prophet ﷺ visited him to check on him. The Prophet ﷺ said, "I don't see Talhah except that death has touched him. Allow me to witness his death, so I can pray upon him and hasten his burial. It is not appropriate for a Muslim's body to be kept between the shoulders of his family, delaying the mentioning of the hadith of Abu Abdillah." Amru ibn Zurarah said the same, and it is narrated that this hadith about drowning in the river has been raised (i.e., a hadith whose chain of narration reaches the Prophet) and there is no other hadith like it. It is also narrated from Al-Hasan al-Basri about drowning in the swamp caused by a snakebite. Al-Shafi'i used to prefer this narration until the cause of death is made clear.
9.29 [Machine] The heading translates to: "The congregation of the doors of washing the dead.
9.30 [Machine] What is recommended for washing the deceased in a burial shroud?
[Machine] There was a disagreement among the people regarding the washing of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ . Some said, "Shall we undress the Messenger of Allah ﷺ like how we undress our deceased or wash him with his clothes on?" So Allah revealed the verse of the Quran upon them, and there was not a single one of them who was not asleep when their chin tasted their chest. Then some people said from the direction of the house, "What do they think he is? Wash the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and his clothes." So they washed him and his garment, pouring water on him and massaging him from above. Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said, "By Allah, if I had known what was happening, I would not have allowed them to wash the Messenger of Allah ﷺ except with his clothes on." Abu Ali Ar-Rudhbary narrated to us, who informed us that Muhammad ibn Bakr narrated to him, who narrated to Abu Dawood, who narrated to An-Nufayliyy, who narrated from Muhammad ibn Salamah, who narrated to me from Yahya ibn Abbad, who narrated from his father, Abbad ibn Abdullah ibn Az-Zubair, who said, "I heard Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) say..." Then he mentioned the narration except that he said, "So they washed him and his garment, pouring water on the garment and massaging him with the garment without using their hands."

[Machine] When they were washing the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, a caller from inside called them, saying, "Do not remove a garment from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. This is the garment of Ibn Buraydah, Sulaiman ibn Buraydah named him." This is what another person narrated from Abu Bakr ibn Abi Shaybah.

[Machine] Ali ibn Abi Talib said, "I washed the Prophet ﷺ and then I went to see what would happen to the deceased. I didn't see anything, and he ﷺ remained fragrant, both in life and in death. I was his guardian for his burial and his family and friends stood four people: Ali, Abbas, Al-Fadl, and Salih, the mawla (freed slave) of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ . The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was washed and prepared for burial according to his sunnah (tradition) and he was buried accordingly."
[Machine] I washed the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and I started to look at what would happen with the deceased, but I did not see anything. He was both fragrant and alive and deceased. ﷺ

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Whoever washes a deceased person, let him start with his right side. This is a weak narration."

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came in when his daughter died, and he said: Wash her with water and lotus leaves three or five times or more than that if you think fit, and put camphor, or some camphor in the last washing, then inform me when you finish. When we had finished we informed him, and he threw us his lower garment saying: Put it next to her body. Malik's version has: that is, his lower garment (izar); and Musaddad did not say: He entered in. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 3142)
[Machine] She said that one of the daughters of the Prophet ﷺ had passed away, so he came to us and said, "Wash her with water and Sidr (a type of plant), and wash her odd number of times, three, five, or more than that if you see it necessary, and mix camphor or something of camphor in the burial shroud. Then, inform me when you have finished." She said, "So when we finished, we informed him, and he threw his cloak over us and said, 'Cover her with it.' Umm Atiyyah said, 'So we braided her hair into three braids and laid her in her grave, with her face down, her right side, and her left side.' Abu Abdullah al-Hafiz informed us, narrating from Ahmad ibn Ja'far al-Qattii'i, narrating from Abdullah ibn Ahmad ibn Hanbal, narrating from my father, who narrated from Yahya ibn Sa'id and Yazid ibn Harun, they both said that Hisham reported the hadith in a similar manner."

Um 'Atiyya said, "One of the daughters of the Prophet ﷺ died and he came out and said, 'Wash her three or five times or more, if you think it necessary, with water and Sidr, and last of all put camphor (or some camphor) and when you finish, inform me.' " Um Atiyya added, "When we finished we informed him and he gave us his waist-sheet and said, 'Shroud her in it.' " And Um 'Atiyya (in another narration) added, "The Prophet ﷺ said, 'Wash her three, five or seven times or more, if you think it necessary.' " Hafsa said that Um 'Atiyya had also said, "We entwined her hair into three braids." (Using translation from Bukhārī 1258)

[Machine] About Umm Atiyyah, it is narrated that she would wash the deceased twice with sidr (lote tree) and the third time with water and camphor. It is also mentioned about Abdullah bin Umar that his father advised him, saying, "O my son, when I die, wash me with water as a complete wash." Ata narrated that one wash is sufficient for washing the deceased. Umar bin Abdul Aziz said, "There is nothing specific regarding the limit of time for washing the deceased." Ibrahim mentioned that if sidr is not found, it does not harm. The companions of Abdullah used to say, "The deceased is washed odd number of times, then shrouded odd number of times, then it is wrapped in a shroud and tied with a piece of cloth."

The Sheikh (may Allah have mercy on him) said, and it was narrated from Al-Hasan and Ibn Sirin that they said, "He does not have hair and his nails are not trimmed." And it was narrated from Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqas that he washed a deceased person and called for Musa. And in another narration, it was said that he trimmed the pubic hair of the deceased. And it was narrated from Aisha that she said, "What are you doing, cutting the hair of your deceased? It is as if she disliked that when it is cut with a fine-toothed comb." And Allah knows best.

Abdullah said, "I narrated it to my father, and he rejected it, saying that Hafs made a mistake in it." He said, "Yes, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ died." They said, "O companion of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , who will wash him?" He said, "The closest men from his family." They said, "O companion of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , where will you bury him?" He said, "Bury him in the spot where Allah took him, for He took him in the dearest of spots to him."

[Machine] The Prophet (PBUH) was washed three times with sidr tree leaves, and his garment was washed as well. He was also washed from a well called Al-Ghars in Quba, which belonged to Sa'd bin Khaythama. The Prophet (PBUH) used to drink from it, while Ali would pour water on him, and Al-Fadhl would hold him. Al-Abbas would pour water and Al-Fadhl would say, "Leave me, you have cut my skin with your fingernail. Indeed, I can feel something dripping on me."

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ returned one day from a funeral in Baqi' cemetery, and I had a headache. I said, "I have a headache." He said, "No, O Aisha, you have two headaches." Then he said, "What would have happened to you if you had died before me? I would have washed you, shrouded you, prayed for you, and buried you." I said to him, "It is because of my love for you, and by Allah, if you had done that, I would have returned to my house and would have married some of your wives." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ smiled, then his illness, in which he died, began.

[Machine] Fatimah, the daughter of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, instructed that her husband Ali ibn Abi Talib should wash her body. And he and Asma bint Umais washed her. This narration is reported by Ad-Darawardi from Muhammad ibn Musa from Awn ibn Muhammad ibn Ali from Um Ja'far bint Muhammad ibn Ali, who said: Asma bint Umais informed me that she and Ali washed the body of Fatimah, the daughter of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Abu Abdullah al-Hafiz reported to me, Muhammad ibn al-Muammal narrated to me from Al-Fadl ibn Muhammad ash-Sha'arani, who narrated from Al-Nu'ayli, who narrated from Abdul Aziz ibn Muhammad, who narrated to me Muhammad ibn Musa, who mentioned it.

[Machine] He washed his wife when she died, and it was narrated to us about washing the husband's wife from Halqamah, Jabir ibn Zayd, Abi Qilabah, and others from the companions. It is also narrated from Abdullah ibn Mas'ud that he washed his wife when she died with a weak chain of narration. It is also narrated from Al-Hajjaj ibn Arta'ah from Dawud ibn Husein from Ikrimah from Ibn Abbas that he said, "The man has more right to wash his wife."

[Machine] Abu Bakr passed away on the night of Tuesday, the eighth of Jumada al-Akhirah in the year thirteen. He instructed that Asma bint Umays, his wife, should wash him, but she was weak, so she sought the help of Abdur Rahman. This narration is connected, although its narrator, Muhammad ibn Umar al-Waqidi, the author of the history and campaigns, is not strong, and he has contradictory evidence from Ibn Abi Mulaikah and Ata ibn Abi Rabah about Saad ibn Ibrahim mentioning that Asma bint Umays washed her husband, Abu Bakr. Some of them mentioned that Abu Bakr instructed it.

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "May Allah have mercy on a man whose wife washes him and shrouds him in her character." She said, "This was done to Abu Bakr, his wife Asma bint 'Umays Al-Ashja'iyyah washed him and shrouded him in the clothes that he used to wear." This is a weak chain of narration.
[Machine] "If I had received the command, I would not have understood what the Prophet ﷺ washed other than his wives. The scholar, may Allah have mercy on him, said, 'I became eager to know this and one should only be eager to know what is permissible.'"
9.43 [Machine] A Muslim washes his relative from the disbelievers, follows his funeral, and buries him, and does not pray for him.
[Machine] I went to the Prophet ﷺ and said, "Indeed, your uncle, the misguided old man, has passed away," meaning his father. He said, "Go and prepare the shroud for him and do not inform anyone until you come to me." So, I went to him and said, "He commanded me, so I performed ghusl (ritual ablution) and he made supplications for me that pleased me. There is nothing on earth that could please me more than that." Abu Dawood mentioned in Al-Maraasil from Amr ibn Uthman from Baqiyah and from Muhammad ibn Awf from Abu al-Mughirah, both of them from Safwan, from Abu al-Yaman al-Huzani, who said, "When Abu Talib died, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ went to attend his funeral. Ibn Awf said, 'He began to walk beside the funeral procession, saying, "May you be blessed and rewarded with good." But he did not stand at his grave. This was narrated to us by Abu Bakr Muhammad ibn Muhammad from Abu al-Husayn al-Fasawi, from Abu Ali al-Lu'lu'i, from Abu Dawood, who mentioned it."
