9. Funerals (2/14)
The Prophet ﷺ said, "If you hear of an outbreak of plague in a land, do not enter it; but if the plague breaks out in a place while you are in it, do not leave that place." (Using translation from Bukhārī 5728)
[Machine] "From the Prophet ﷺ : This plague is the remains of a punishment with which a nation was afflicted. When it occurs in a land, do not enter it. And if it occurs in a land where you are present, do not leave it." Abu Al-Husayn ibn Bishran informed us that Ismail ibn Muhammed Al-Saffar narrated to us from Muhammad ibn Ubaydullah Al-Munadi, who narrated from Wahb ibn Jarir, who mentioned it."
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ said: "Indeed, this plague is a punishment and a remaining torment with which people were punished. So when it happens in a land and you are in it, do not leave it to escape from it. And when it happens in a land that you are not in, do not enter it."
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was asked about the plague, and she (a woman) said: "The Prophet of Allah ﷺ informed me that it is a punishment that Allah sends upon whomever He wills. He made it a mercy for the believers. So, when a servant of Allah resides in a land wherein the plague has broken out, and he remains patient and expects the reward from Allah, knowing that nothing will afflict him except what Allah has written for him, then he will receive a reward similar to that of a martyr."
9.6 [Machine] The patient does not curse the fever, nor does he wish for death from an affliction that has befallen him; rather, he should be patient and have faith.
Umm Sa'ib or Umm Musayyib. why is it that you are shivering? She said:" It is fever and may it not be blessed by Allah, whereupon he (the Holy Prophet) said: Don't curse fever for it expiates the sin of the children of Adam just as furnace removes the alloy of iron. (Using translation from Muslim 2575)
[Machine] Indeed, the Companions of our Prophet who embraced Islam passed away and did not leave behind any wealth. We have received wealth for which we could not find a place except for the ground. Then we brought it back to him another time, and he was constructing a wall for himself. He said, "Verily, a Muslim is rewarded for every expenditure he makes, except for something he puts in the ground. If it were not for the fact that the Messenger of Allah prohibited us from supplicating for death, I would have supplicated for it."
I heard Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying, "The good deeds of any person will not make him enter Paradise." (i.e., None can enter Paradise through his good deeds.) They (the Prophet's companions) said, 'Not even you, O Messenger of Allah ﷺ?' He said, "Not even myself, unless Allah bestows His favor and mercy on me." So be moderate in your religious deeds and do the deeds that are within your ability: and none of you should wish for death, for if he is a good doer, he may increase his good deeds, and if he is an evil doer, he may repent to Allah." (Using translation from Bukhārī 5673)
Abu Huraira narrated to us ahadith from Messenger of Allah ﷺ and out of these one is that Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: None amongst you should make a request for death, and do not call for it before it comes, for when any one of you dies, he ceases (to do good) deeds and the life of a believer is not prolonged but for goodness. (Using translation from Muslim 2682)
The Prophet ﷺ said, "None of you should wish for death because of a calamity befalling him; but if he has to wish for death, he should say: "O Allah! Keep me alive as long as life is better for me, and let me die if death is better for me.' " (Using translation from Bukhārī 5671)
9.7 [Machine] The patient improves his opinion of Allah (God) ﷻ and hopes for His mercy.
[Machine] I heard the Prophet ﷺ before his death say three things: None of you should die except while having good thoughts about Allah. The wording of their hadiths is similar.
I heard Messenger of Allah ﷺ say three days before his death: None of you should die but hoping only good from Allah, the Exalted and Glorious. (Using translation from Muslim 2877c)
9.8 [Machine] The patient says: "My head hurts, or I am in pain, or the pain has intensified." Ayub said in what Allah ﷻ informed about him: "Affliction has touched me, and You are the Most Merciful of the merciful." [Al-Anbiya: 83]
ʿAisha, (complaining of headache) said, "Oh, my head"! Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "I wish that had happened while I was still living, for then I would ask Allah's Forgiveness for you and invoke Allah for you." Aisha said, "Wa thuklayah! By Allah, I think you want me to die; and If this should happen, you would spend the last part of the day sleeping with one of your wives!" The Prophet ﷺ said, "Nay, I should say, 'Oh my head!' I felt like sending for Abu Bakr and his son, and appoint him as my successor lest some people claimed something or some others wished something, but then I said (to myself), 'Allah would not allow it to be otherwise, and the Muslims would prevent it to be otherwise". (Using translation from Bukhārī 5666)
[Machine] Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqas said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to me while I was suffering from a severe illness during the Farewell Hajj. I asked him, 'O Messenger of Allah, inform me about the pain I am experiencing, while I am a wealthy person.' In another narration, it is mentioned, 'The pain has reached me.' Ibn Abdan informed us, Anba'a Ahmad ibn 'Ubayd informed us, Hisham ibn 'Ali and 'Uthman ibn 'Umar said, Abdulah ibn Raja' narrated to us, Abdulaziz ibn Abi Salamah informed me from Az-Zuhri, who said, 'Aamir ibn Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqas relayed from his father that he informed him, saying, 'The pain has reached me.'"
9.9 [Machine] In sudden death
[Machine] About Ubayd ibn Khalid al-Sulami, a companion of the Prophet ﷺ said, "Once, the Prophet ﷺ said..." Then, he said, "Another time, Ubayd ibn Khalid said..." He said, "Sudden death is the result of sadness." It was narrated by Ru'h ibn Ubada, from Shu'ba, from Mansur, from Tamim ibn Salama, from Ubayd without any doubt. Shu'ba raised his narration and said, "This is how I was informed by him," and he informed me another time without raising it. Abu Abdullah al-Hafiz informed us, and he was informed by Abu Bakr ibn Ishaq, who was informed by Muhammad ibn Ghaleb, who was informed by Muhammad ibn Bashshar, who was informed by Ru'h ibn Ubada, who was informed by Shu'ba. Ibn Bashshar mentioned it and said, "Muhammad ibn Ja'far informed me, and Shu'ba informed him with this, and it is marfu' (raised)."
[Machine] "Is there anything that is disliked? I asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about that, and he said: It is a comfort for the believer and a cause of sorrow for the sinner." This was narrated by Sufyan al-Thawri from 'Ubaidullah in a report attributed to 'Aisha.
A funeral procession passed by Messenger of Allah ﷺ who said, "Relieved or relieving?" The people asked, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! What is relieved and relieving?" He said, "A believer is relieved (by death) from the troubles and hardships of the world and leaves for the Mercy of Allah, while (the death of) a wicked person relieves the people, the land, the trees, (and) the animals from him." (Using translation from Bukhārī 6512)
9.10 [Machine] Order for visiting the patient
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Feed the hungry, visit the sick, and free the captive." Sufyan said, "And the captive is the prisoner." Isma'il said, "And in another place, Sufyan narrated it to us from Mansur alone."
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ said, "Release the captive, respond to the caller, and visit the sick."
[Machine] I heard Al-Bara' bin 'Azib say: "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded us with seven things: visiting the sick, following the funeral procession, saying "Yarhamuk Allah" when someone sneezes, returning the greeting, responding to the caller, fulfilling oaths, and supporting the oppressed."
[Machine] "The Prophet ﷺ said: 'Visit your sick and follow the funeral processions; it reminds you of the hereafter.'"
9.11 [Machine] The Excellence of the Clinic
[Machine] On the authority of Thawban, the freed slave of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Whoever visits a sick person will continue to remain in the harvest of Paradise until he returns."
[Machine] About Thawban raising his garment to the Prophet, ﷺ , he said, "The returning of the sick person to his residence in the outskirts of Paradise."
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Whoever visits a sick person, he will remain in the harvest of Paradise." It was said, "O Messenger of Allah, what is the harvest of Paradise?" He said, "Its harvest is the reward of the conversation of Ibn Bashran's hadith."
[Machine] That the Prophet ﷺ said, "The returning of a sick person to the outskirts of paradise until he returns" was narrated to us by Abu Bakr ibn Foorak, who narrated it from Abdullah ibn Ja'far, who narrated it from Yunus ibn Habib, who narrated it from Abu Dawood, who narrated it from Shu'bah and Thabit, and Abu Zaid mentioned it without mentioning Abu Al-Ash'ath in his chain of narration. The narration of Yazid and Marwan is more authentic, so it is possible that he (Abu Al-Ash'ath) did not mention him in his chain of narration.
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Whoever visits a sick person will continue to wade in the mercy of Allah until he sits down. And when he sits down, he becomes immersed in it."
[Machine] "The Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , said: When a man visits his brother, he walks until he sits. Then, when he sits, mercy envelops him. If it is in the morning, 70,000 angels send blessings upon him until evening, and if it is in the evening, 70,000 angels send blessings upon him until morning. Shu'bah narrated this from Hukm, from Abdullah bin Nafi', from Ali, may Allah be pleased with him, once as a hadith with a connected chain, and once as a hadith with a suspended chain."

When Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to Medina, Abu Bakr and Bilal got fever, and I went to both of them and said, "O my father, how do you feel? O Bilal, how do you feel?" Whenever Abu Bakr's fever got worse, he would say, "Every man will meet his death once in one morning while he will be among his family, for death is really nearer to him than his leather shoe laces (to his feet)." And whenever fever deserted Bilal, he would say aloud, "Would that I know whether I shall spend a night in the valley (of Mecca) with Idhkhir and Jalil (i.e. kinds of grass) around me, and whether I shall drink one day the water of Mijannah, and whether I shall see once again the hills of Shamah and Tafil?" Then I went to Messenger of Allah ﷺ and told him of that. He said, "O Allah, make us love Medina as much as or more than we used to love Mecca, O Allah, make it healthy and bless its Sa' and Mud (i.e. measures), and take away its fever to Al-Juhfa."
