9. Funerals (1/14)
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Paradise is closer to anyone of you than the strap of his sandal, and Hellfire is similar to that."
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ drew lines, then he drew a line to the side and said, "Do you know what this is?" This is the example of the son of Adam and the example of the one who wishes, and that line of hope is between him while he hopes and death comes to him.
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "The son of Adam grows old, but two things remain with him: greed and long hope." Al-Bukhari said.
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "The heart of an old man is young due to his love for two things: gathering wealth and prolonging his life." They singled out this narration from the words of Abu Hurairah.
[Machine] Narrated by the Prophet, ﷺ : If the son of Adam has two valleys of gold, he would desire a third one, and nothing can fill the belly of the son of Adam except dust. Allah accepts the repentance of those who repent. Ibn Abbas said: "I do not know if this is from the Quran or not."
"The Messenger of Allah said: 'For whom among you is the wealth of his heirs dearer to him than his own wealth?' They said: 'O Messenger of Allah, there is no one among us for whom his own wealth is not dearer to him than the wealth of his heirs.' The Messenger of Allah said: 'Know that there is no one among you for whom the wealth of his heirs is not dearer than his own wealth. Your wealth is that which you have sent on ahead, and the wealth of your heirs is that which you have kept.'" (Using translation from Nasāʾī 3612)
A servant says, My wealth. my wealth, but out of his wealth three things are only his: whatever he eats and makes use of or by means of which he dresses himself and it wears out or he gives as charity, and this is what he stored for himself (as a reward for the Hereafter), and what is beyond this (it is of no use to you) because you are to depart and leave it for other people. (Using translation from Muslim 2959a)
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , said: "Verily, the world is sweet and green, and Allah has made you successors in it to see how you will behave. So beware of the world and the temptation of women."
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah took me by the shoulder and said, "Be in this world as if you were a stranger or a traveler." And Ibn Umar said to me, "When you wake up in the morning, do not wait for the evening, and when you reach the evening, do not wait for the morning. Take from your good deeds for your bad ones."
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Whoever has taken the money or the honor of his brother unjustly, let him return it to him before the Day of Resurrection when no dinar or dirham will be accepted. If he has done good deeds, they will be taken from him and given to his companion. But if he does not have any good deeds, the sins of his companion will be taken from him and placed upon him."
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ said, "The wise person is the one who restrains his desires and works for what comes after death, while the weak person is the one who follows his desires and relies on Allah's forgiveness."
[Machine] We were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ at a funeral; when we reached the grave, he exhorted upon the grave and I turned and faced him; so he wept until the ground became wet and then he said, "My brothers, prepare for a day like this."
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Whoever loves dunya (the material world) will harm his Hereafter, and whoever loves his Hereafter will harm his dunya. So prioritize what lasts over what perishes."
9.2 [Machine] Whoever reaches the age of sixty, Allah has excused him in life, for His saying {Have We not made you immortal in which those who remember remember, and the warner has come to you} [Fussilat: 37]
[Machine] Narrated by the Prophet ﷺ , Allah has granted an excuse to a servant by delaying his lifespan until he reaches the age of seventy or sixty.
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ said, "Whoever Allah grants him a life of sixty years, he is given an excuse for his lifespan."
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Whoever lives for sixty years, Allah has excused him in his life."
[Machine] In His saying {Did We not give you long life, so that whosoever would receive admonition would receive it? And the warner came to you} [Surah Fatir 37]: it is mentioned that Ibrahim ibn al-Fadl al-Madani narrated that it is attributed to a period of sixty years, but it is not considered strong.
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "On the Day of Judgment, it will be said: Where are the children of the sixties?" And it refers to the age that Allah mentioned in the Quran: "Have We not prolonged your life enough so that he who would receive admonition could receive it?" Ibn Abi Fudayk said, and Al-Hasan ibn Abdullah ibn Atiyyah narrated from someone who heard it from Ibn Abbas, who said: "It refers to the gray hair."
“The ages of (the people in) my nation will be between sixty and seventy, and few of them will exceed that.” (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 4236)
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "There are two blessings in which many people are deceived: good health and free time." 6524
9.3 [Machine] Blessed is he who has lived a long life and done good deeds
"O Messenger of Allah! Which of the people is the best?" He said: "He whose life is long and his deeds are good." He said: "Then which of the people is the worst?" He said: "He whose life is long and his deeds are bad." (Using translation from Tirmidhī 2330)
[Machine] Two Arab men came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ asking him. One of them said, "O Messenger of Allah, who is the best of people?" He replied, "The one whose life is long and his actions are good." The other one said, "O Messenger of Allah, the Islamic laws have become numerous on me, so please tell me something that I can hold onto." He said, "Keep your tongue moist with the remembrance of Allah."
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Shall I not inform you of the best amongst you in terms of character?" They said: "Yes, please do." He said: "The best amongst you are those who have the longest lives and the best deeds."
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Shall I not inform you of your best? They said, 'Yes, O Messenger of Allah.' He said, 'The longest of you in lifespan and the best of you in deeds.'"
[Machine] I heard Ubaid bin Khalid say, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ pointed between two men, and one of them was killed while the other remained. After the deceased was buried, they prayed for him and asked Allah to forgive him, have mercy on him, and reunite him with his companion. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked them, 'What did you say?' They replied, 'We asked Allah to forgive him, have mercy on him, and reunite him with his companion.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Where is his prayer after his prayer? Where is his actions after his actions?' He said, 'And I think he said, 'Where is his fasting after his fasting?' By the One in whose hand is my soul, the distance between them is greater than the distance between the heavens and the earth.' Umar bin Maymun said, 'I was amazed by this hadith because it has been attributed to me.'"
“I saw in a dream that I was at the gate of Paradise, and I saw them both. Someone had come out from Paradise and he gave permission to the one who died last (to enter); then he came out and gave permission to the one who had been martyred. Then they both came back to me and said to me: Go back, for your time has not yet come.” The next morning, Talhah told the people about that and they were amazed by it. News of that reached the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and he said: “Why are you amazed?ʿ They said: “O Messenger of Allah, this one strove harder in worship and then was martyred for the sake of Allah, but the other one entered Paradise before him?” He said: ʿDid he not remain for a year after (the other one) died?” They said: “Yes.” He said: “Did he not live until Ramadan came and fast it?” They said: “Yes.” He said: ʿDid he not pray this many rakʿahs during that year?ʿ They said: “Yes.” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Verily, the distance between them is the distance between heaven and earth.” (Using translation from Aḥmad 1403)
9.4 [Machine] What every Muslim should feel in terms of patience towards all the diseases, pains, and sorrows they encounter, because of the expiation and rewards they contain
[Machine] I entered upon the Prophet ﷺ and found him feeling unwell. I touched him and said, "O Messenger of Allah, you seem to be feeling very unwell." He replied, "Indeed, I am feeling unwell just like two of you." I said, "Is there any reward for you in this?" He said, "Yes, by the One in whose hand is my soul, there is no Muslim on the earth who is afflicted with any harm or illness except that Allah removes his sins from him just as leaves fall from a tree." And Abu Muhammad al-Hasan ibn Ali ibn al-Muammil narrated to us, stating that Abu Uthman al-Basri narrated to us, stating that Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab informed him, from Ya'la ibn 'Ubaid, from Al-A'mash, who mentioned it in similar words, and said, "So I placed my hand on him."
[Machine] That Abu Sa’id al-Khudri entered upon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and he was wearing a cloak. He placed his hand upon it and found that it was warm on top of the cloak. Abu Sa’id said: "How severe is your fever, O Messenger of Allah!" The Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied: "Indeed, we are subjected to trails and tests in this way, and as a result our reward is multiplied." Abu Sa’id asked: "O Messenger of Allah, who are the people who are subjected to the most trials?" The Prophet ﷺ answered: "The prophets." Abu Sa’id asked again: "Then who?" The Prophet ﷺ replied: "Then the scholars." Abu Sa’id asked again: "Then who?" The Prophet ﷺ answered: "Then the righteous. One of them is afflicted with poverty until he possesses nothing but a cloak to wear, and he is afflicted with lice until he kills them. And one of them rejoices more in times of trial than one of you does in times of prosperity."

“I said: ‘O Messenger of Allah, which people are most severely tested?’ He said: ‘The Prophets, then the next best and the next best. A person is tested according to his religious commitment. If he is steadfast in his religious commitment, he will be tested more severely, and if he is frail in his religious commitment, his test will be according to his commitment. Trials will continue to afflict a person until they leave him walking on the earth with no sin on him.’” (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 4023)
[Machine] "When the verse 'Whoever does evil will be recompensed for it' [Quran 4:123] was revealed, it caused distress among the Muslims. They mentioned it to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, so he said: 'Come closer, be on the right track, and take good tidings. Indeed, every affliction that befalls a Muslim is an expiation for his sins, even if it is as minor as a thorn that pricks him or a calamity that affects him.'"
I was told that Abu Bakr said: O Messenger of Allah, how could we be in a good state after this verse: “It will not be in accordance with your desires (Muslims), nor those of the people of the Scripture (Jews and Christians), whosoever works evil, will have the recompense thereofʿ fan-Nisa' 4:123]? Will we be punished for every bad deed we do? There Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: ʿMay Allah forgive you, O Abu Bakr, do you not fall sick? Do you not get exhausted? Do you not feel sad? Don't calamities befall you?ʿ He said: Of course. He said: ʿThat is the recompense you are given.ʿ (Using translation from Aḥmad 68)
[Machine] Saeed Al-Khudri and Abu Hurairah reported that they both heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, "No affliction, hardship, illness, or sorrow befalls a believer, even if it is the pricking of a thorn, except that Allah expiates his sins through it."
(the wife of the Prophet) Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "No calamity befalls a Muslim but that Allah expiates some of his sins because of it, even though it were the prick he receives from a thorn." (Using translation from Bukhārī 5640)
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: There is no affliction that befalls a believer except that it expiates his sins, even if it is just a thorn that pricks him. This is from the narration of Yunus ibn Yazid (6539) and in the narration of Ma'mar, he said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: There is no sickness or pain that afflicts a believer except that it becomes an expiation for his sins, even if it is just a thorn that pricks him or a calamity that befalls him.
[Machine] I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, "There is no believer who is pricked by a thorn or anything greater, except that Allah expiates his sins and raises his rank with it."
A believer does not receive (the trouble) of running a thorn or more than that but Allah elevates him in rank or effaces his sins because of that. (Using translation from Muslim 2572b)
[Machine] I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying, "Whoever spends a good expense in the cause of Allah, he will be rewarded with seven hundred times. And whoever spends an expense on his family or removes harm from a way, the good deed is multiplied ten times. And fasting is a shield as long as it is not broken. And whoever Allah afflicts with a trial in his body, he will have his sins purged from it." Khalid said, meaning, "His sins are forgiven for him."
"Trials will not cease afflicting the believing man and the believing woman in their self, children, and wealth, until they meet Allah without having any sin." (Using translation from Tirmidhī 2399)
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "The example of a believer when he is afflicted with illness or fever is like a piece of iron that is put into the fire. Its impurities are removed and what remains is its goodness."
[Machine] "From his grandfather, and he had a close companionship with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ . He said, 'I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying, 'When a servant is given a position by Allah that he cannot attain by his own actions, Allah tests him in his body, wealth, or offspring.' The son of Nufayl increased in patience upon that, until they both reached the status that Allah had predetermined for him.'"
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ said, "Indeed, when a servant is following a good path of worship and then falls ill, it is said to the appointed angel, 'Write down for him the same reward for his actions as when he was healthy, until he is either released (from his illness) or given full recovery."
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "When a servant falls sick or travels, he will be rewarded for the deeds he used to do while being healthy and settled."
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , said: Allah the Exalted and Most High said, "When I afflict my believing servant and he does not complain to others about Me, I release him from his chains and replace his flesh with better flesh and his blood with better blood, then he continues in his work." This was narrated by Abu Sakhr Humaid bin Ziyad from Sa'id from Abu Hurairah, and it is stopped on him.
[Machine] Allah tests His believing servant, and if he does not complain to others about his pain, I will remove his sins and replace his blood with better blood and his flesh with better flesh. Then I will say to him, "Do you want anything?"
[Machine] The fever came seeking permission from the Prophet ﷺ , so he asked, "Who are you?" The fever replied, "I am the fever." He asked, "Do you know the people of Quba?" She said, "Yes." He said, "Go to them." So she went to them and they experienced its intensity. They complained about it to the Prophet ﷺ , so he said, "If you wish, I will supplicate to Allah to remove it from you, and if you wish, it will be a means of expiation and purification." They said, "Instead, let it be a means of expiation and purification." 6551
[Machine] "I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying, 'Allah says, When I test My servant with the loss of his loved ones, and he remains patient, I will compensate him with Paradise, which he desires through his eyes.'"
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "On the Day of Judgment, the people who were granted ease in this world would wish that their skins had been cut with scissors out of the reward that the people who were tested with hardships receive."
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "For the believer, there is good in everything and this applies only to the believer. If good befalls him, he is thankful and it is good for him. If harm befalls him, he is patient and it is good for him. All the decrees of Allah are good for the Muslims."
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "I am amazed by the believer. If goodness befalls him, he praises Allah and shows gratitude, and if a calamity befalls him, he praises Allah and remains patient. The believer is rewarded for every action, even for lifting a morsel of food to his wife's mouth. There are many narrations on this subject, but what we have mentioned suffices for those who are granted understanding."

'Umar went to Syria and as he came to Sargh, information was given to him that an epidemic had broken out in Syria. 'Abd al-Rahman b. 'Auf narrated to him that Messenger of Allah ﷺ had said: When you hear of its presence in a land, don't move towards it, and when it breaks out in a land and you are therein, then don't run away from it. So 'Umar b. Khattab came back from Sargh. Salim b. 'Abdullah reported that 'Umar went back, along with people on hearing the hadith reported on the authority of 'Abd al-Rahman b. 'Auf.
