8. Ṣalāh for Rain (Istisqāʾ) (1/3)
A man came to Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! Livestock are destroyed and the roads are cut off. So please invoke Allah." So Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed and it rained from that Friday to the next Friday. Then he came to Messenger of Allah ﷺ I and said, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! Houses have collapsed, roads are cut off and the livestock are destroyed." So Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed, "O Allah! (Let it rain) on the tops of mountains, on the plateaus, in the valleys and over the places where trees grow." So the clouds cleared away from Medina as clothes are taken off. (Using translation from Bukhārī 1017)
8.2 [Machine] The Imam goes out to the mosque when he wishes to pray for rain.
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ went out to the place of prayer, seeking rain, and he faced the qibla, and he turned his cloak and performed two units of prayer.

[Machine] About the prayer of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ during the prayer for rain, I came to him and said, "We performed the prayer in the mosque for the prayer of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ for rain." He said, "No, rather he sent the son of your brother, meaning Al-Walid, who was the governor of the city at that time." Ibn Abbas said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ went out, appearing modest and humble, beseeching Allah. He sat on the pulpit and did not give a sermon like yours, but he remained in supplication, beseeching, and Takbir. He then prayed two Rak'ahs as he used to pray on the two Eids."

“One of the chiefs* sent me to Ibn ‘Abbas to ask him about the prayer for rain. Ibn ‘Abbas said: ‘What kept him from asking me?’ He said: ‘The Messenger of Allah ﷺ went out humbly, walking with a humble and moderate gait, imploring, and he performed two Rak’ah as he used to pray for ‘Eid, but he did not give a sermon like this sermon of yours.’” (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 1266)

I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: Seek for me weak persons, for you are provided means of subsistence and helped through your weaklings. Abu Dawud said: Zaid b. Artat is the brother of 'Adi b. Artat. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 2594)
[Machine] "He has virtue over those who are below him among the companions of the Prophet ﷺ . The Prophet of Allah ﷺ said, 'Indeed, Allah supports this nation through its weak by means of their supplications, prayers, and sincerity.'"
[Machine] On the authority of the Prophet Muhammad, ﷺ , he said: "Hold on a moment, from Allah, hold on a moment. Verily, had it not been for young men who are humble, and animals that are content, and elderly people who bow down in prayer, and infants who are breastfed, punishment would have poured upon you like a torrent. This hadith is narrated by Ibrahim bin Kuthaym, who is not considered very strong, and he has another separate chain of narration that is also not very strong."
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "If it were not for the worshippers of Allah, the kneeling animals, the infants being breastfed, and the roaming animals, surely punishment would rain down upon you abundantly, and you would be left yearning for mercy."

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "There are three supplications that are not rejected: the supplication of a parent, the supplication of a fasting person, and the supplication of a traveler."
“There are three whose supplication is not rejected: The fasting person when he breaks his fast, the just leader, and the supplication of the oppressed person; Allah raises it up above the clouds and opens the gates of heaven to it. And the Lord says: ‘By My might, I shall surely aid you, even if it should be after a while.’” (Using translation from Tirmidhī 3598)
8.6 [Machine] Seeking Justice and Drawing Closer to Allah through Charity and Good Deeds, with the Hope of Receiving an Answer.
O people, Allah is Good and He therefore, accepts only that which is good. And Allah commanded the believers as He commanded the Messengers by saying: "O Messengers, eat of the good things, and do good deeds; verily I am aware of what you do" (xxiii. 51). And He said: "O those who believe, eat of the good things that We gave you" (ii. 172). He then made a mention of a person who travels widely, his hair disheveled and covered with dust. He lifts his hand towards the sky (and thus makes the supplication): "O Lord, O Lord," whereas his diet is unlawful, his drink is unlawful, and his clothes are unlawful and his nourishment is unlawful. How can then his supplication be accepted? (Using translation from Muslim 1015)
[Machine] The messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Indeed, Allah has said, 'Whoever shows hostility towards a close friend of Mine, I have declared war against him. And My servant does not draw near to Me with anything more beloved to me than the duties I have obligated upon him. My servant continues to draw near to Me with supererogatory acts of worship until I love him. When I love him, I become his hearing with which he hears, his sight with which he sees, his hand with which he grasps, and his leg with which he walks. If he were to ask Me, I would surely give to him; and if he were to seek refuge in Me, I would surely protect him.' And the rest of the Hadith, I have mentioned it in the book of names and attributes with its interpretation."
[Machine] That the Prophet ﷺ said, "The doors of heaven are opened every Monday and Thursday, and every slave who does not associate anything with Allah will be forgiven, except for the one who has enmity between him and his brother." He said, "Wait for these two to reconcile." Abu Abdullah Al-Hafiz informed us, Abu Bakr ibn Abu Darim Al-Hafiz in Kufa informed us, Muhammad ibn Abdullah Al-Hadrami informed us, Othman ibn Abi Shaybah informed us, from Jarir, from Suhail, who mentioned it with the same meaning, except that he said, "Wait for these two to reconcile twice."

[Machine] No people have ever violated a covenant without Allah subjecting their enemy to them. And no obscene conduct became widespread among a people except that Allah inflicted them with death. And no people have reduced the scales [of justice] except that Allah caused them to suffer from famine. And no people have withheld zakah except that Allah withheld rainfall from the heavens. And whenever a people judge with partiality, they will likely experience a disaster. And [the Prophet] said, "And killing."

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ went out with the people to seek rain. He prayed two loud-rak'ahs, reciting in them. Then, he turned his cloak inside out and sought rain and faced the Qiblah. He did more than this, as reported by 'Abd al-Razzaq, and he raised his hands and supplicated, so he was supplicated to, and he sought rain 6400. Abu Bakr ibn al-Harith al-Faqih informed us, 'Ali ibn 'Umar al-Hafidh narrated to us, al-Husayn ibn Isma'il narrated to us, al-Hasan ibn Abi al-Rabi narrated to us, 'Abd al-Razzaq mentioned him with his addition.

[Machine] reported to have asked the Prophet ﷺ about his prayer during the prayer for rain. The Prophet ﷺ replied, "No, but your cousin sent you. Even if he had sent someone else, he would have asked about it. Then Ibn Abbas said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came out looking humble and supplicating until he sat on the pulpit. He did not give a sermon like yours, but he continued to make supplications, humble himself, and recite takbeer. Then he prayed two Rak'ahs as he used to pray on Eid." This is the narration of Ibrahim ibn Musa and the narration of Yahya ibn Yahya with its meaning, except that Al-Walid ibn Utbah said, "Abu Dawud As-Sijistani considered Ibn Utbah's saying as correct. May Allah have mercy on him." This narration suggests that his supplication was before the prayer and he did not stop making supplications.

[Machine] That the Messenger of Allah ﷺ draped his cloak over his left shoulder, placing his right hand on his left hand, and performed the two Rak'ahs. He invoked Takbir seven times in the first Rak'ah, recited "Subhanaka Allahumma wa bihamdika" (Glory be to You, O Allah, and praise be to You) and recited Surah Al-A'la (The Most High). In the second Rak'ah, he invoked Takbir five times.
[Machine] On both Eid days, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ went out to seek rain. He performed two Rak'ahs (units of prayer) without Adhan or Iqamah. He said twelve Takbirs (saying Allahu Akbar) in them, seven in the first and five in the second. He recited aloud in the prayer, then he turned away and delivered a sermon. He faced the Qiblah (direction of prayer) and turned his cloak. Then Muhammad bin Abdul Aziz sought rain. This is not a strong Hadith, and it is strengthened by the previous evidence.

[Machine] Abdullah ibn Yazid al-Ansari went out to seek rain from the people. He then prayed two rak'ahs and sought rain. On that day, I met Zaid ibn Arqam, and there was no one between him and me except one man. I asked him, "How many battles did the Messenger of Allah ﷺ wage?" He said, "Nineteen battles." I asked, "How many battles did you participate in with him?" He said, "Seventeen battles." I asked, "Which was the first battle that he fought?" He said, "The Battle of Ushayrah or the Battle of Ushayra."

[Machine] He heard his paternal uncle, who was one of the companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , say that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ went out one day to pray for rain. He turned his back to the people, raised his hands and supplicated to Allah. Then he faced the qibla (direction of prayer), turned his cloak inside out, and prayed two units of prayer. Ibn Abi Dhia'b, a narrator of the hadith, recited in them. Ibn Wahb said that he meant reciting them loudly.
The people complained to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ of the lack of rain, so he gave an order for a pulpit. It was then set up for him in the place of prayer. He fixed a day for the people on which they should come out. Aisha said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ, when the rim of the sun appeared, sat down on the pulpit, and having pronounced the greatness of Allah and expressed His praise, he said: You have complained of drought in your homes, and of the delay in receiving rain at the beginning of its season. Allah has ordered you to supplicate Him has and promised that He will answer your prayer. Then he said: Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the Universe, the Compassionate, the Merciful, the Master of the Day of Judgment. There is no god but Allah Who does what He wishes. O Allah, Thou art Allah, there is no deity but Thou, the Rich, while we are the poor. Send down the rain upon us and make what Thou sendest down a strength and satisfaction for a time. He then raised his hands, and kept raising them till the whiteness under his armpits was visible. He then turned his back to the people and inverted or turned round his cloak while keeping his hands aloft. He then faced the people, descended and prayed two rak'ahs. Allah then produced a cloud, and the storm of thunder and lightning came on. Then the rain fell by Allah's permission, and before he reached his mosque streams were flowing. When he saw the speed with which the people were seeking shelter, he ﷺ laughed till his back teeth were visible. Then he said: I testify that Allah is Omnipotent and that I am Allah's servant and apostle. Abu Dawud said: This is a ghraib (rate) tradition, but its chain is sound. The people of Medina recite "maliki" (instead of maaliki) yawm al-din" (the master of the Day of Judgement). But this tradition (in which the word maalik occurs) is an evidence for them. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 1173)

8.9 [Machine] Supplication in Standing Prayers for Rain
[Machine] His uncle, one of the companions of the Prophet ﷺ , informed him that the Prophet ﷺ went out with the people to the prayer place and asked for rain for them. So he stood up and called out while facing the qibla, and he turned his cloak. Then they were poured with rain. Abu Amr Al-Adibi informed us, Abu Bakr Al-Isma'ili informed us, Al-Hasan ibn Sufyan narrated to us, Muhammad ibn Yahya narrated to us, Abu Al-Yaman mentioned it in a similar way except that he said: "He called upon Allah while standing and said, 'Give us drink.'"

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ went out to the place of prayer seeking rain. He turned his cloak inside out and faced the qibla (direction of prayer), and prayed two rak'ahs. According to the chain of narration, Sufyan said: Yahya bin Sa'id and Al-Mas'oodi narrated from Abu Bakr bin Muhammad, from Abbād bin Tamim, from Abdullah bin Zaid with this hadith. Al-Mas'oodi said, "So I asked Abu Bakr: Did he place his right hand on his left hand, or his left hand on his right hand?" He said, "No, rather he placed his right hand on his left hand."

8.14 [Machine] What was said about the meaning in the transformation of the cloak
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed for rain and turned his cloak inside out, so that the drought would be alleviated. This was narrated by others from Isa bin Isa, without mentioning Jabir, and it is attributed to Abu Ja'far, who said that he was informed by Abu Bakr bin Al-Harith Al-Faqih and Ali bin Umar Al-Hafiz, who narrated from Muhammad bin Ahmad bin Abi Thalj, who narrated from his grandfather, who narrated from Ishaq bin Al-Tabba', who narrated from Hafs bin Ghiyath.
[Machine] Waki' said regarding his saying, "He made the right on the left and the left on the right," meaning the transformation of the barren year into fertility, as this right has transformed on the left.
8.15 [Machine] What is recommended regarding the abundance of seeking forgiveness in the prayer for rain, and to say it frequently: "Seek forgiveness from your Lord, indeed, He is ever Forgiving. He will send [rain from] the sky upon you in [continuing] showers"[Noah: 11]
The Prophet ﷺ said: If anyone continually asks pardon, Allah will appoint for him a way out of every distress, and a relief from every anxiety, and will provide for him from where he did not reckon. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 1518)
[Machine] Umar went out to seek rain (prayer for rain) and he continued to make istighfar (seeking forgiveness) without saying anything else. So I asked, "Does he not speak for what he went out for?" And I do not know if seeking rain is seeking forgiveness, so we were rained upon.
[Machine] "The people were struck by drought during the time of Umar, so Umar ascended the pulpit and sought rain through supplication. However, he did not exceed in seeking forgiveness until rain fell. They said to him, 'O Amir al-Mu'minin, we heard you seeking rain.' He replied, 'I sought rain through the keys of the heavens, by which rain is sent down.' Then he recited the verse: 'Seek forgiveness from your Lord, indeed He is ever a Perpetual Forgiver. He will send rain upon you in showers, and increase you in strength to your strength, and do not turn away as criminals.'"
[Machine] I have requested rain with the majaadeeh of the sky, through which rain falls. Then, I recited, "Seek forgiveness from your Lord; indeed, He is ever a Perpetual Forgiver. He will send [rain from] the sky upon you in [continuing] showers" (Surah Nuh 10). "And, O my people, ask forgiveness of your Lord and then repent to Him. He will send [rain from] the sky upon you in showers" (Surah Hud 52).
8.16 [Machine] Seeking Rain from Whom Blessings of Prayer are Awaited
[Machine] He heard Ibn Umar impersonating the poetry of Abu Talib about the Prophet ﷺ , [the wide sea] and he is fair and the clouds are sought by his face, the protector of orphans and a refuge for widows.
My father said, "I heard Ibn ʿUmar reciting the poetic verses of Abu Talib: And a white (person) (i.e. the Prophet) who is requested to pray for rain and who takes care of the orphans and is the guardian of widows." Salim's father (Ibn ʿUmar) said, "The following poetic verse occurred to my mind while I was looking at the face of the Prophet ﷺ while he was praying for rain. He did not get down till the rain water flowed profusely from every roof-gutter: And a white (person) who is requested to pray for rain and who takes care of the orphans and is the guardian of widows . . . And these were the words of Abu Talib." (Using translation from Bukhārī 1008)

[Machine] When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saw the people turning away, he said, "O Allah, send down rain upon them, for seven years they ate dead animals, skins, and bones." Abu Sufyan came to him with some people from the people of Mecca and said, "O Muhammad, you claim that you have been sent as a mercy, and yet your people have perished. Invoke Allah for them." So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ made supplication and then it rained heavily upon them seven times. The people complained about the abundance of rain, so he said, "O Allah, around us and not upon us," and the cloud moved away from above their heads. He said, "Thus the people were watered around them." He said, "The sign of the smoke has passed, and it is the hunger that afflicted them," and this is the saying of Allah ﷻ, "Indeed, We have relieved the torment of a little time (i.e. we delayed the punishment for them) - indeed, you are returning to Us." (Surah Ad-Dukhan 15) And the sign of being overwhelmed and the great victory on the day of Badr, and the splitting of the moon, they are mentioned in Sahih sources from various angles, except from Mansur. And Bukhari referred to the narration of Asbat and its addition, which came in the hadith about the Prophet's ﷺ supplication and its acceptance.

The supplication of the servant is granted in case he does not supplicate for sin or for severing the ties of blood, or he does not become impatient. It was said: Messenger of Allah, what does:" If he does not grow impatient" imply? He said: That he should say like this: I supplicated and I supplicated but I did not find it being responded. and theu he becomes frustrated and abandons supplication. (Using translation from Muslim 2735c)

8.20 [Machine] Rain supplication without prayer and Friday on the pulpit.
Messenger of Allah ﷺ I was delivering the Khutba (sermon) on a Friday when the people stood up, shouted and said, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! There is no rain (drought), the trees have dried and the livestock are destroyed; Please pray to Allah for rain." So Messenger of Allah ﷺ said twice, "O Allah! Bless us with rain." By Allah, there was no trace of cloud in the sky and suddenly the sky became overcast with clouds and it started raining. The Prophet ﷺ came down the pulpit and offered the prayer. When he came back from the prayer (to his house) it was raining and it rained continuously till the next Friday. When the Prophet started delivering the Friday Khutba (sermon), the people started shouting and said to him, "The houses have collapsed and the roads are cut off; so please pray to Allah to withhold the rain." So the Prophet ﷺ smiled and said, "O Allah! Round about us and not on us." So the sky became clear over Medina but it kept on raining over the outskirts (of Medina) and not a single drop of rain fell over Median. I looked towards the sky which was as bright and clear as a crown. (Using translation from Bukhārī 1021)

[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ was informed that Abu Lubabah said to the sky: "Stretch your hand to attract the locusts to the hypocrite's palm tree." So the Prophet ﷺ said: "O Allah, send them until Abu Lubabah blocks the entrance of his palm tree with his cloak." So Allah sent rain, and when the flood reached Abu Lubabah's palm tree and he was in his cloak, he had to use it to block the entrance of the palm tree against the flood.

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed for rain on a Friday and said, "O Allah, send down rain upon us, O Allah, send down rain upon us." Abu Lubaba stood up and said, "O Messenger of Allah, there are dates in the storage containers." The Prophet ﷺ replied, "And are there clouds in the sky that we can see?" So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "O Allah, send down rain upon us until Abu Lubaba stands up naked, covering his furrow with his clothes." Then the sky began to rain and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed with us. The Ansar (Muslims of Madinah) then surrounded Abu Lubaba and said to him, "O Abu Lubaba, by Allah, the sky will never stop raining until you stand up naked and cover your furrow with your clothes, as the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said." So Abu Lubaba stood up naked and covered his furrow with his clothes. Then the rain stopped.
