8. Ṣalāh for Rain (Istisqāʾ) (2/3)
[Machine] Isma'il narrated from Abu 'Amr Al-Adib, who narrated from Abu Bakr Al-Isma'ili, who narrated from Ja'far Al-Firyaabi, who narrated from Qutaybah bin Sa'id, who narrated from 'Abdul-Aziz bin Muhammad, that Isma'il bin Ja'far narrated from Shurayk bin 'Abdullah bin Abi Namir, who narrated from Anas bin Malik, that Abu 'Amr narrated from Abu Bakr Al-Isma'ili, who narrated from Ahmad bin Al-Hasan bin 'Abdul-Jabbar, who narrated from Yahya bin Ayyub, who narrated from Isma'il bin Ja'far, who narrated from Shurayk, who narrated from Anas, that a man entered the mosque on a Friday from a door close to Dar Al-Qada' (the house of justice), while the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was standing delivering his sermon. The man faced the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, "O Messenger of Allah, wealth has perished and paths have been cut off. Pray to Allah for rain for us." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ raised his hands and said, "O Allah, give us rain, O Allah, give us rain, O Allah, give us rain." Anas said, "By Allah, we could not see any trace of clouds in the sky and there was no building or house between us and Sila (a mountain pass) and Tihama (a low-lying plain). Then a cloud came from behind the mountain just like a shield, and when it came halfway, it spread, and then rain fell from it. By Allah, neither before it reached the middle of the sky nor after, did we see any trace of cloud or rain. Then a man entered through that door on the following Friday, while the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was delivering the sermon. The man faced the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, "O Messenger of Allah, wealth has perished and paths have been cut off. Pray to Allah to withhold the rain from us." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ raised his hands and said, "O Allah, around us and not upon us. O Allah, on the hills, the valleys, the tops of the trees, and in the furrows." Anas said, "I saw the clouds dispersing and we walked in the sunshine." Shurayk said, "I asked Anas, 'Was that the same man?' He replied, 'I do not know.'"

[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ came forward with a vessel and said, "O Allah, give us rain that saturates, refreshing, plentiful, quick, beneficial, and not harmful." Then, it closed upon them like this. He told us about it in the Book Al-Mustadrak and also told us about it in the great benefits of Abu Al-Abbas. He said in the narration, "The Prophet ﷺ came forward with balances and said, 'Say, O Allah, give us rain 6438.'" Abu Bakr Ahmad ibn Muhammad Al-Oshnani narrated to us, Abu Al-Abbas Al-Asamm informed us about it, and he mentioned it and said, "Balances" without saying "Say it like this."

[Machine] Narrated by the Prophet of Allah, ﷺ , that he invoked against Mudhar and I went to him and said, "O Messenger of Allah, indeed Allah has given you and answered you, and indeed your people have perished, so invoke Allah for them." So he said: "O Allah, give us (rain) a plentiful, mind-clearing, plenitude, swift, beneficial rain that is not harmful." There was not (any) gathering until they were given drink.
[Machine] that the Prophet ﷺ used to say when seeking rain: "O Allah, shower your servants and animals with rain, spread your mercy, and revive your dead land." And so [he would say.]
[Machine] The Prophet, ﷺ , used to say when seeking rain: "O Allah, give us beneficial rain, abundant rain, soft rain, spreading it over your servants, revitalizing the breasts and giving life to the crops." This is narrated in the hadith of Abu Abdullah, and in the hadith of Ibn Al-Harith, it is mentioned that Ya'la bin Al-Ashdaq narrated from Abdullah bin Jarad, who said: "The Prophet, ﷺ , said it and added 'pleasant and abundant'."
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ used to say during rain: "O Allah! Let it be a beneficial rain, not a harmful one, without destruction, flooding, or submerging. O Allah! (Send rain) around our crops and the root of the trees, not upon us. This is a blessing."

The people of Medina had a drought during the time of the Prophet ﷺ. While he was preaching on a Friday, a man stood up and said: Messenger of Allah, the horses have perished, the goats have perished, pray to Allah to give us water. He spread his hands and prayed. Anas said: The sky was like a mirror (there was no cloud). Then the wind rose; a cloud appeared (in the sky) and it spread : the sky poured down the water. We came out (from the mosque after the prayer) passing through the water till we reached our homes. The rain continued till the following Friday. The same or some other person stood up and said: Messenger of Allah, the houses have been demolished, pray to Allah to stop it. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ smiled and said: (O Allah), the rain may fall around us but not upon us. Then I looked at the cloud which dispersed around Medina just like a crown. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 1174)
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ never raised his hands in any of his supplications except during praying for rain. He would raise his hands until the whiteness of his armpits could be seen.
[Machine] "I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ raising his hands in supplication, to the extent that the whiteness of his armpits could be seen, meaning when seeking rainfall."

The Prophet ﷺ used to make supplication for rain in this manner. he spread his hands keeping the inner side (of hands) towards the earth, so I witnessed the whiteness of his armpits. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 1171)

A bedouin came to Messenger of Allah ﷺ on a Friday and said, "O Messenger of Allah ! The livestock, the offspring, and the people have perished." So, Messenger of Allah ﷺ raised both his hands invoking Allah (for rain) and the people too raised their hands with Messenger of Allah ﷺ invoking Allah (for rain). We had not left the mosque when it started raining. It rained till the next Friday when the same man came to Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, "O Messenger of Allah! The travelers are compelled to postpone their journeys (because of excessive rain) and the roads are overflowed." (Using translation from Bukhārī 1029)

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed the Fajr prayer in Hudaybiyah after a rainy night. After he finished, he turned to the people and asked, "Do you know what your Lord ﷻ has said?" They replied, "Allah and His Messenger know best." He said, "Some of my slaves have become believers in Me and disbelievers in the star. As for those who said, 'We have been given rain by the grace and mercy of Allah,' they are believers in Me and disbelievers in the star. And as for those who said, 'We have been given rain by such and such star,' they are disbelievers in Me and believers in the star."
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Did you not see what your Lord said? He said, 'I have not bestowed upon My servants any blessing except that a group among them becomes disbelievers in it, saying 'star' and 'by the star.'"
Some people entered the morning with gratitude and some with ingratitude (to Allah). Those who entered with gratitude said: This is the blessing of Allah, and those who entered with ingratitude said: Such and such asterism was right. It was upon this that the verse was revealed: I swear by the setting of the stars to the end and make your provision that you should disbelieve it. (Using translation from Muslim 73)
[Machine] It does not rain and no one gives except for Allah. As for those who say, "We cause it to rain by our will, just as some of the polytheists claim to add rain to what has already rained, and say that they themselves made it rain," then this is considered disbelief, as the Messenger of Allah ﷺ has said. Because time is created and does not possess and cannot control anything by itself or for others, it does not rain or create anything. However, if someone says, "We cause it to rain by our will, in the time when rain is meant to fall," then this is not considered disbelief. I prefer that one says, "We cause it to rain in the time when rain is meant to fall," as it has been reported that some companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to say on a rainy morning, "We cause it to rain by the will of Fath (victory)," then they recite the verse, "Whatever Allah grants to people of mercy - none can withhold it" [Surah Fatir 2]. Ash-Shafi'i and some also narrated from Umar that he said on a Friday while on the pulpit, "How much is left of the time of ath-Thuraiya?" Al-Abbas replied, "Nothing is left except al-Awaa," so Umar supplicated and called upon the people until he descended from the pulpit and it rained heavily, reviving the people. This statement of Umar clarifies what I have described, because he only wanted to know how much time is left of the ath-Thuraiya in order to understand that Allah has decreed rain in specific times, as they experienced, just as they knew that Allah has decreed heat and cold in specific times.
[Machine] He excelled in what the praise speaker composed yesterday, so Umar denied his statement. He excelled in what the praise speaker composed due to his addition of rain to the verbal praise. Imam Ahmad, may Allah have mercy on him, said, "All of this is the speech of Shafi'i, may Allah have mercy on him, and by the One."
[Machine] I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: "Indeed, Allah grants people blessings during the night, but the majority of them wake up ungrateful for these blessings. They say: 'We were rained upon due to such and such star.' Muhammad ibn Ibrahim narrated this hadith to me from Sa'id ibn al-Musayyib, who heard it from Salman, who heard it from Abu Hurairah." Sa'id said, "We have also heard this from Abu Hurairah, who narrated to us that the one who witnessed this prayer was 'Umar ibn al-Khattab while he was seeking rain from the people during the year of Ash-Ramadah. He called upon them, and they lined up for a long time, and he sought rain for a long time. Then he asked 'Abbas ibn Abdul-Muttalib, 'O Abbas, how much of Thuriyya (a star) is left?' Abbas replied, 'O Commander of the Believers, the people of knowledge claim that it will rise on the horizon after it sets for seven days.' 'Umar said, 'By Allah, those seven days have not passed yet, and the people have been granted rain.' May Allah have mercy on Sheikh Al-Shafi'i, who reconciled between both narrations."

8.25 [Machine] Al-Burooz for rain
It rained upon us as we were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. The Messenger of Allah (way peace be upon him) removed his cloth (from a part of his body) till the rain fell on it. We said: Messenger of Allah, why did you do this? He said: It is because it (the rainfall) has just come from the Exalted Lord. (Using translation from Muslim 898)
8.26 [Machine] What is mentioned in the flood?
[Machine] Abu Al-Abbas narrated from Ar-Rabi' that Ash-Shafi'i narrated from someone who he does not accuse of lying, that the Prophet ﷺ used to say when it rained: "Come out with us to this which Allah has made pure, so we can purify ourselves from it and praise Allah for it." This hadith is interrupted and it was narrated from Umar regarding it.
[Machine] Umar ibn Al-Khattab passed by us returning from the Hajj pilgrimage, accompanied by a group of the companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He said, "Cleanse yourselves in the sea, for it is blessed." Then he called for the towels, and they descended and cleansed themselves.

8.27 [Machine] Seeking Answers When Rain Falls
The Prophet ﷺ said: Two (prayers) are not rejected, or seldom rejected: Prayer at the time of the call to prayer, and (the prayer) at the time of fighting, when the people grapple with each other. Musa said: Rizq ibn Sa'id ibn AbdurRahman reported from AbuHazim on the authority of Sahl ibn Sa'd from the Prophet ﷺ as saying: And while it is raining. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 2540)

8.28 [Machine] What happened to the color of the Prophet's ﷺ complexion when a strong wind blew or he saw a cloud
[Machine] The strong wind was known to be evident on the face of the Prophet ﷺ when it blew.
I never saw the Messenger of Allah (May peace be upon him) laugh fully to such an extent that I could see his uvula. He would only smile, and when he saw clouds or wind, his face showed signs (of fear). I asked him: Messenger of Allah! When the people see the cloud, they rejoice, hoping for that it may contain rain, and I notice that when you see it, (the signs of) abomination on your face. He replied: ‘A’ishah! What gives me safety from the fact that it might contain punishment? A people were punished by the wind. When those people saw the punishment, they said: this is a cloud which would give us rain. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 5098)
8.29 [Machine] What he used to say during the blowing of the wind and forbid its cursing
Whenever the wind was stormy, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to say: O Allah! I ask Thee for what is good in it, and the good which it contains, and the good of that which it was sent for. I seek refuge with Thee from what is evil in it, what evil it contains, and the evil of that what it was sent for; and when there was a thunder and lightning in the sky, his colour underwent a change, and he went out and in, backwards and forwards; and when the rain came, he felt relieved, and I noticed that (the sign of relief) on his face. 'A'isha asked him (about it) and he said: It may be as the people of 'Ad said: When they saw a cloud formation coming to their valley they said:" It is a cloud which would give us rain" (Qur'an, xlvi. 24). (Using translation from Muslim 899b)
[Machine] I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying: "The wind is from the breath of Allah. It brings mercy and it brings punishment. So do not curse it, and ask Allah for its goodness and seek refuge in Allah from its evil."
8.30 [Machine] What did he used to say when he saw the rain?
When there was on any day windstorm or dark cloud (its effects) could be read on the face of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he moved forward and backward (in a state of anxiety) ; and when it rained, he was delighted and it (the state of restlessness) disappeared. 'A'isha said: I asked him the reason of this anxiety and he said: I was afraid that it might be a calamity that might fall upon my Ummah, and when he saw rainfall he said: It is the mercy (of Allah). (Using translation from Muslim 899a)
[Machine] That whenever the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saw rain, he would say, "O Allah, a beneficial shower."
[Machine] When the Prophet ﷺ saw clouds or a mirage, he became startled. And when it rained, he would pray: "O Allah, let it be a beneficial rain."
8.31 [Machine] What does he say when he hears the thunder?
from his father, that when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ would hear the sound of thunder and lightning bolts, he would say: “O Allah, do not kill us with Your wrath, and do not destroy us with Your punishment, and pardon us before that (Allāhumma lā taqtulnā bi-ghaḍabika wa lā tuhliknā bi-ʿadhābika wa ʿāfinā qabla dhālik).” (Using translation from Tirmidhī 3450)
[Machine] And glorified is Allah, who causes the thunder to praise Him, and the angels from their fear of Him. Then He says, "Indeed, this is a severe threat for the people of the earth."
[Machine] As if he is going towards the saying of Allah, "And the thunder exalts [ Allah ] with praise of Him" (Surah Ar-Ra'd, 13).
8.32 [Machine] Signs of Rain
[Machine] He said, "When one of you sees lightning or thunder, do not point at it, rather describe it." Abu Sa'eed ibn Abi 'Amr informed us, Abu al-'Abbas narrated to us, Rabee'ah narrated to us, Shafi'i narrated to me, from Sulaiman ibn Abdullah who heard it from 'Urwah. This is mentioned in the Musnad compiled by Ibn Ma'tar, and we heard it from Abu Zakariya and others who heard it from Sulaiman ibn Abdullah ibn Uwaymir, who heard it from 'Urwah. And in al-Mabsut, which we heard from Abu Sa'eed ibn Uwaymir, and the authentic narration is the narration of Abu Sa'eed 6473.

8.33 [Machine] What is in the thunder?
[Machine] "That a Mujahid used to say, 'Thunder is an angel and lightning is the wings of the angel. They bring rain to the clouds.' Al-Shafi'i, may Allah have mercy on him, said, 'What Mujahid said is similar to the apparent meanings of the Quran.'"

8.34 [Machine] The abundance and scarcity of rain.
The famine would not break out because of drought, but there would be famine despite heavy rainfall as nothing would grow from the earth. (Using translation from Muslim 2904)
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ said, "There has not been a year where it rained and the south wind blew, except that the valley of such and such flowed." This narration is reported with this chain of narrators and the authentic version is "stopped."
[Machine] "Abdullah, the son of Mas'oud, said: 'There is no year with more rain than another year, but rather, Allah directs it as He wills.'"
[Machine] "Every year is not less rainy than the previous year, but rather Allah redirects it wherever He wills. Then recite this verse: 'And We have distributed it among them that they might be reminded, but most of the people refuse except disbelief.'" [Surah Al-Furqan, verse 50]
8.35 [Machine] Which wind brings rain?
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "I was aided by the wind of As-Saba, and 'Ad (tribe) was destroyed by Ad-Daboor."
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "I was granted victory through the wind, and 'Ad were destroyed by the Dabur."
[Machine] God sends the wind, which carries the water from the sky, passing through the clouds until it condenses like a grain of pollen. Then it is sent down from the sky like the Azali bird, and the winds scatter it.
[Machine] Indeed, Allah sends the wind which carries the water from the sky. Then it passes through the clouds until it condenses like a seed and then it rains.
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Never does a gust of wind blow from the south, but it brings glad tidings of rain." Ash-Shafi'i (may Allah have mercy on him) said, "This means that Allah created it (the gust) to bring good news of rain before His mercy."
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ said: "Indeed, Allah created in Paradise a wind after the wind, with a closed door, and the soul comes to you through that door. If that door were to be opened, it would overturn everything between the heavens and the earth, and it is near to Allah as lightning, and it is near to you as the south."
[Machine] When the wind became strong, he would say, "O Allah, let it be a fertile wind, not barren."
