[Machine] "When the verse 'Whoever does evil will be recompensed for it' [Quran 4:123] was revealed, it caused distress among the Muslims. They mentioned it to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, so he said: 'Come closer, be on the right track, and take good tidings. Indeed, every affliction that befalls a Muslim is an expiation for his sins, even if it is as minor as a thorn that pricks him or a calamity that affects him.'"  

البيهقي:٦٥٣٥ – أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَافِظُ ثنا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ إِمْلَاءً أنبأ بِشْرُ بْنُ مُوسَى ثنا الْحُمَيْدِيُّ ثنا سُفْيَانُ ثنا أَبُو حَفْصٍ عُمَرُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ مُحَيْصِنٍ السَّهْمِيُّ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ مُحَمَّدَ بْنَ قَيْسِ بْنِ مَخْرَمَةَ يحَدِّثُ عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ قَالَ

لَمَّا نَزَلَتْ {مَنْ يَعْمَلْ سُوءًا يُجْزَ بِهِ} [النساء 123] شَقَّ ذَلِكَ عَلَى الْمُسْلِمِينَ فَذَكَرُوهُ لِرَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ قَارِبُوا وَسَدِّدُوا وَأَبْشِرُوا فَإِنَّ كُلَّ مَا أَصَابَ الْمُسْلِمَ كَفَّارَةٌ لَهُ حَتَّى الشَّوْكَةُ يُشَاكُهَا أَوِ النَّكْبَةُ يُنْكَبُهَا

"When the following was revealed: 'Whoever works evil will have the recompense of it... (4:123)' That worried the Muslims, so they complained about that to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and he said: "Seek closeness and be steadfast, and in all that afflicts the believer there is atonement, even a thorn that pricks him, and the hardship he suffers."

لَمَّا نَزَلَتْْ (مَنْ يَعْمَلْ سُوءًا يُجْزَ بِهِ ) شَقَّ ذَلِكَ عَلَى الْمُسْلِمِينَ فَشَكَوْا ذَلِكَ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَقَالَ قَارِبُوا وَسَدِّدُوا وَفِي كُلِّ مَا يُصِيبُ الْمُؤْمِنَ كَفَّارَةٌ حَتَّى الشَّوْكَةِ يُشَاكُهَا أَوِ النَّكْبَةِ يُنْكَبُهَا

[Machine] When the verse "Whoever does evil will be recompensed for it" [An-Nisa 123] was revealed, it caused distress among the Muslims and reached a point where it led to complaints being made to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ . The Messenger of Allah ﷺ told them to draw near and strive to do righteous deeds. He informed them that every affliction a Muslim faces serves as expiation for his sins, even a thorn that pricks him.  

أحمد:٧٣٨٦ – حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ حَدَّثَنِي ابْنُ مُحَيْصِنٍ شَيْخٌ مِنْ قُرَيْشٍ سَهْمِيٌّ سَمِعَهُ مِنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ قَيْسِ بْنِ مَخْرَمَةَ عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ قَالَ

Whoever does evil, will have the recompense thereof" [Quran 4:123] was revealed, it caused distress for the Muslims. They went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and asked him about it. He replied, "Stay close to righteousness and adhere to it, for every affliction that a person faces is an expiation for their sins, even a thorn that pricks them."
