قَوْلُهُ تَعَالَى: {لَيْسَ بِأَمَانِيِّكُمْ وَلَا أَمَانِيِّ أَهْلِ الْكِتَابِ} [النساء: 123]

[Machine] When the verse "It is not according to your desires, nor according to the desires of the People of the Scripture. Whoever does evil, will have the recompense thereof" [Quran 4:123] was revealed, it caused distress for the Muslims. They went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and asked him about it. He replied, "Stay close to righteousness and adhere to it, for every affliction that a person faces is an expiation for their sins, even a thorn that pricks them."  

الكبرى للنسائي:١١٠٥٧أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنِ عَلِيٍّ حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ مَعِينٍ حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ عُيَيْنَةَ عَنِ ابْنِ مُحَيْصِنٍ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ قَيْسِ بْنِ مَخْرَمَةَ

عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ لَمَّا نَزَلَتْ {لَيْسَ بِأَمَانِيِّكُمْ وَلَا أَمَانِيِّ أَهْلِ الْكِتَابِ مَنْ يَعْمَلْ سُوءًا يُجْزَ بِهِ} [النساء 123] شَقَّ ذَلِكَ عَلَى الْمُسْلِمِينَ فَأَتَوْا رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ فَسَأَلُوهُ فَقَالَ «قَارِبُوا وَسَدِّدُوا فَفِي كُلِّ مَا يُصَابُ بِهِ الْعَبْدُ كَفَّارَةٌ حَتَّى النَّكْبَةُ يُنْكَبُهَا وَالشَّوْكَةُ يُشَاكُهَا»

[Machine] When the verse "Whoever does evil will be recompensed for it" [An-Nisa 123] was revealed, it caused distress among the Muslims and reached a point where it led to complaints being made to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ . The Messenger of Allah ﷺ told them to draw near and strive to do righteous deeds. He informed them that every affliction a Muslim faces serves as expiation for his sins, even a thorn that pricks him.
