9. Funerals (10/14)
[Machine] Ali prayed over a funeral after it was prayed over.
[Machine] Anas ibn Malik attended a funeral that had already been prayed upon, and the deceased person was laid on a bed. So, he prayed before the bed.
9.135 [Machine] Praying at the Grave after the Deceased is Buried.
[Machine] Someone informed me that they saw the Prophet ﷺ visiting a neglected grave and praying for its occupants. I asked them who informed them of this, and they said Ibn Abbas.
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed for a man after he was buried in the night. He and his companions were inquiring about him, so he asked, "Who is this?" They said, "He was buried last night, so he prayed for him 7001 times." Abu Amr narrated to us that Abu Bakr told him that Abu Ya'la informed him that Abu Khaythama narrated it from Jarir, except that he said, "Pray for him."
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ arrived at a damp grave and prayed for him. They lined up behind him and raised their voices in Takbir. I asked 'Amr, "Who informed you?" He said, "It was a trustworthy person who witnessed it, Abdullah ibn Abbas."
[Machine] That the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , prayed on a deceased person three times after his death. And it is narrated from Isma'il ibn Zakariya from Al-Shaybani through his chain of narrators that he prayed on a grave after it was buried for two nights, which we mentioned in the Khilafiyyat.
[Machine] That the Prophet ﷺ visited a grave after a month. Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Al-Harith Al-Asbahan told us that Ali ibn Umar Al-Hafiz narrated to us, who was narrated by Ibn Sa'id, who was narrated by Bishr ibn Adam, who was narrated by Abu Asim. Ali said that Bishr ibn Adam mentioned it and differed from others about it, going against Abu Asim.
[Machine] Abu Asim Al-Nabeel narrated from Sufyan, from Al-Shaibani, from Al-Sha'bi, from Ibn Abbas, that the Prophet ﷺ prayed on a grave after it was buried, and similarly...
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to a forsaken grave, so he prayed for him and we prayed with him.
[Machine] That the Prophet ﷺ prayed at a grave after it was buried 7008 times, and Abu Abdullah al-Hafiz informed us, narrating from Ali ibn Isa ibn Ibrahim, narrating from Abu Bakr Muhammad ibn al-Nadr al-Jaroudi, narrating from Abu Ghassan Muhammad ibn Amr al-Razi, Zunayj narrated from Yahya ibn al-Durais, narrating from Ibrahim ibn Tahoma who mentioned it in a similar manner.
[Machine] He said, "I was with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ when he passed by a grave with fresh soil. He asked, 'Whose grave is this?' It was said, 'It is the grave of so-and-so.' He then descended and lined his companions behind him, and he prayed over it. I also prayed over him, and it seemed as if he heard the conversation from both sides. This narration has been reported by Anas bin Malik, Abu Hurairah, and others from the Prophet ﷺ."
[Machine] That the Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed upon the grave of a woman after she was buried.
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ passed by a grave and said, "Whose grave is this?" They said, "The grave of so and so." He said, "Could you not have informed me?" So they made it smaller and humbled it. Then he prayed for him after he was buried and said, "These graves are filled with darkness upon their inhabitants, and indeed Allah will illuminate them with my prayers upon them."
[Machine] A black woman or a man used to always pray at the mosque, but the Prophet ﷺ noticed that he was missing. So, he asked about him and they said that he had passed away. The Prophet ﷺ said, "Why didn't you inform me? Show me his grave." They showed him the grave and he prayed for him.
[Machine] A black woman used to attend the mosque regularly, but when she died, the Prophet (PBUH) missed her. He asked about her after a few days and was informed that she had died. He said, "Why didn't you inform me?" He then went to her grave and prayed for her. Ibn Abda added in his narration that Hammad informed him that Thabit said, "The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said, 'These graves are filled with darkness for their inhabitants, but Allah illuminates them with my prayers upon them.'"
[Machine] So he or she died and the Prophet ﷺ lost her, so he said, "What did the man who used to take care of the mosque do?" It was said, "He died." He said, "Why didn't you inform me?" They said, "It was night." He said, "Then show me her grave." He came to the grave and prayed for her, then he said, "It is certain, or in another narration, Thabit said that these graves are filled with darkness for its people, and Allah, the Almighty, illuminates it with my prayers upon it, and what overwhelms my heart is that this addition is not narrated by Abu Rafi' from Abu Hurairah. So either it is from Thabit, transmitted from the Prophet ﷺ in a disconnected chain, or it is sent by him."
[Machine] He said that a man used to follow the debris of the mosque and pick it up. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ lost him, so he asked, "What happened to so-and-so?" It was said to him, "He has died." He said, "Let whomever is willing among his companions go ahead." So, he ordered them and they lined up, then he went forward and prayed for him with them.
[Machine] The prayer was recited over a grave after three days. Jamee' ibn Ahmad informed us, who were informed by Abu Tahir al-Muhammada'abi, who narrated from Uthman al-Darimi, who narrated from Ahmad ibn Asim al-Kufi, from the family of Malik ibn Mighwal, who narrated from Hammad ibn Waqid al-Saffar. He mentioned it and said that Hammad ibn Waqid is weak and that this Ta'qit is not reliable. Only what some narrators have mentioned from Hammad ibn Zaid is authentic. He asked about it after a few days, and in some narrations, he mentioned it on a different day. It has been narrated in this [hadith] from Yazid ibn Thabit, the brother of Zaid ibn Thabit, from the Prophet ﷺ, and Yazid ibn Thabit has witnessed the Battle of Badr, while Zaid did not witness it.
[Machine] We went out with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to Al-Baqi' and he saw a new grave, so he asked about it and was informed. He recognized it and said, "Did you not inform me?" They said, "O Messenger of Allah, we thought it would grieve you, so we did not inform you." He said, "You should not do that. I do not know what will happen to any of you after I am gone, so whenever you come to a grave, send blessings upon the deceased, for my prayers will reach him wherever he may be." Then he approached the grave and prayed for him. We lined up behind him and he raised his hands four times. It was narrated from 'Amir bin Rabi'ah and Buraidah from the Prophet ﷺ.
[Machine] Some of the companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ informed him that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to visit the sick among the poor Muslims and their weak ones, and he would attend their funerals and no one else would pray over them except for him. They also informed him that a poor woman from the people of Al-Awali fell ill for a long time, so the Messenger of Allah ﷺ would ask about her from her neighbors who had visited her, and he ordered them not to bury her if anything happened to her until he prayed over her. Then that woman died at night, so they carried her to the place of funeral or the area of funerals near the mosque of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ for him to pray over her as he had ordered them. But when it was morning, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked about her from those who had visited her and they informed him of her story, and that they disliked waking up the Messenger of Allah ﷺ from his sleep. Therefore, they prayed over her and carried her. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ woke up, he asked about her from her neighbors and they informed him of her situation and that they disliked waking him up for her. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked them, "Why did you do that? Go and bring her here." So they went with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ until they reached her grave, and they lined up behind the Messenger of Allah ﷺ as they would line up for the funeral prayer. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed over her and performed four takbeers (saying "Allahu Akbar") as he would do for the funeral prayer.
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ passed by a new grave that had just been buried and with him was Abu Bakr. He asked, "Whose grave is this?" Abu Bakr replied, "O Messenger of Allah, this is the grave of Umm Mihan, who used to sweep the dust from the mosque." The Prophet said, "Why didn't you inform me?" They replied, "You were asleep and we did not want to disturb you." The Prophet said, "Do not do this, for my prayer over your deceased is a light for them in their graves." He then lined up his companions and prayed over her. Abu Sinan said, "I mentioned this hadith to 'Amr ibn Murrah, and he said, 'Abu Musa and his companions prayed over a grave after it was buried. Shouldn't we be the first to pray over it?'"
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed for Umm Sa'd after her death for a month, and likewise.
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "These two fingers, meaning the little finger and the thumb, are equal in the diya (blood money). It was said to him, 'If you prayed for Umm Sa'd when she was sick and the Prophet ﷺ was absent.' Abu Sa'd al-Malini informed us, Abu Ahmad ibn 'Adi al-Hafiz informed us, Ishaq ibn Ibrahim and Imran al-Sakhtiani said, Sufyan ibn Sa'id mentioned him and this statement about his prayer for Umm Sa'd in this chain is unique to Sufyan ibn Sa'id, and the famous narration is from Qatadah, from Ibn al-Musayyib, from the Prophet ﷺ . It is a mursal hadith as mentioned by Abu Dawud in what he narrated from Ahmad bin Hanbal, that Ahmad was asked about it and he said, 'Do not narrate with such a hadith to be reliable like this.'"

[Machine] That the Messenger of Allah ﷺ migrated and he started praying towards the Qiblah. When death approached him, he bequeathed one third of his wealth to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to do with it as he pleased. He also said, "O Allah, make me face the Qiblah in my grave." The Prophet ﷺ came after a year and prayed upon him, and one third of his inheritance was returned to his son. This is how I found it in my book. The correct version is after a month. And Allah knows best. This is a message and we have been narrated it in this book from Abdul Aziz Al-Darawardi from Yahya bin Abdullah bin Abi Qatadah, reported consecutively without interruption.

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ announced to them the death of Najashi, the king of Abyssinia, on the day he died. He said, "Pray for your brother." [Machine] About his father's story about the arrival of Ja'far ibn Abi Talib to the land of Habasha and his meeting with the Negus, and informing him about the situation of the Prophet Muhammad and what he said about Jesus, son of Mary, and his admiration for him. Then the Negus said, "Welcome to you, and to the one who sent you. I bear witness that he is the Messenger of Allah and that he is the one about whom Jesus, son of Mary, gave glad tidings. If I were not in the position of authority, I would have come to him and carried his sandals." Abdul Khaliq ibn Ali Al Mu'athen informed us, narrating from Abu Bakr ibn Khanb, who narrated from Al Hassan ibn Salam Al Sawwaaq, who narrated from Ubaidullah ibn Musa, who narrated from Isra'il, who narrated from Abu Ishaq, who narrated from Abu Burdah, who narrated from his father. And he mentioned the story, which includes the statement of the Negus, which I have narrated.

[Machine] We were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in Tabuk, and the sun rose with a brightness, light, and radiance that I had never seen before in previous sunrises. Then Gabriel came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, "O Gabriel, why do I see the sun rising with a brightness, light, and radiance that I had never seen before in previous sunrises?" Gabriel replied, "That is because Mu'awiyah ibn Mu'awiyah al-Laythi died in Al-Madinah today, so Allah ﷻ sent seventy thousand angels to pray upon him." He said, "And in that, he used to recite Surah Al-Ikhlas (Chapter 112) abundantly, both day and night, in his travels, during his standing and sitting. So, O Messenger of Allah, would you like me to gather the earth for you so you can pray upon him?" He said, "Yes," so he prayed upon him. Then Al-'Ala' said, "This is the son of Zaid, and it is also said the son of Zaidah." Anas ibn Malik did not relate this with such details, Abu Sa'ad al-Malini informed us, who informed us Abu Ahmad ibn 'Adi, who reported from Al-Ala' ibn Zaid, who reported from Anas. Yazid ibn Harun, a weak narrator of Hadith, also narrated from him. The Shaykh said, "And this Hadith has been narrated from another chain of narrators as well, from Anas ibn Malik.

Behind him were rows of angels, each row numbering seventy thousand angels. The Prophet ﷺ asked Jibril (Gabriel), 'O Jibril, how did he attain this status?' Jibril replied, 'By his love for him' (reciting Surah Al-Ikhlas). Abi Sa'd al-Malini narrated to us, who narrated to us Abu Ahmad ibn 'Adi al-Hafiz, who said that Mahbub bin Hilal al-Muzani narrated from 'Ata bin Abi Maymunah, who narrated from Anas, that Jibril (Gabriel) descended and it was not followed by any other descent. [Machine] And some of the wives of the Prophet ﷺ, may Allah be pleased with them, ordered the funeral of Saad ibn Malik to pass by them, so he passed by them in the mosque and was placed on the stone and they prayed over him. She said, "How quickly people rush to criticize something they have no knowledge of. They criticized us for allowing the funeral of Saad to enter the mosque, but the Messenger of Allah ﷺ only prayed over Suhail ibn Bayda'a inside the confines of the mosque and also mentioned it in his narration of Wahib from Musa ibn Uqbah from Abdul Wahid ibn Hamza."

[Machine] We witnessed the daughter of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was sitting on the grave. I saw his eyes tearing up, so he said, "Is there anyone among you who didn't commit a sin tonight?" Abu Talhah replied, "I did not." He said, "Then get into her grave." So he went into her grave and Yunus said, "Is there anyone among you who is a man?"
We were (in the funeral procession) of one of the daughters of the Prophet ﷺ and he was sitting by the side of the grave. I saw his eyes shedding tears. He said, "Is there anyone among you who did not have sexual relations with his wife last night?" Abu Talha replied in the affirmative. And so the Prophet told him to get down in the grave. And so he got down in her grave. (Using translation from Bukhārī 1285)
[Machine] 'Omar bin Al-Khattab proposed to marry Zainab bint Jahsh four times, and then he sent a message to the Prophet's ﷺ wives asking, "Who will enter her grave?" They replied, "Whoever used to have intimate relations with her during her lifetime." This narration was reported from Ya'la bin 'Ubaid through Isma'il, and it was amplified. 'Omar was pleased with the idea that he would be buried with her. When they told him what they said, he said, "They have spoken the truth."'
