9. Funerals (11/14)
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ honored the grave of Saad by placing his cloak on it. This information is known to me only through a narration from Yahya bin Uqbah bin Abi Al-Ayazar, who is considered weak.
[Machine] Abu Ishaq and Abdullah ibn Yazid had seen the Prophet ﷺ , and this is a valid hadeeth even though it is stopped.
[Machine] "And we bury a dead person, and the shroud is spread over his grave. Then the shroud is pulled from the grave, and it is said that this is done by women. Ibn Abdan informed us, and Ahmad bin Ubaid narrated to us, Ali bin al-Hasan bin Bayan al-Muqri narrated to us, Arim narrated to us, and Saq bin Hazn narrated from Ali bin al-Hakam, and he mentioned it while in the state of confusion due to the ignorance of the man from the people of Kufa."
9.140 [Machine] Who said: "May the deceased be greeted by the grave's keeper"?
[Machine] This is from the Sunnah, so it became like the known fact, and we have narrated this statement from Ibn Umar and Anas ibn Malik.
[Machine] "And Abu Abdullah Al-Hafiz told us that Abu Al-Abbas narrated to us that Al-Rabi' narrated to us that Al-Shafi'i narrated to us that Al-Thiqat narrated from Umar ibn Ata' from Ikrimah from Ibn Abbas, who said: 'Ask the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about placing the hand on the head.'"
[Machine] Al-'Abbas informed Ar-Rabi', who informed Ash-Shafi'i, who informed some of our companions, from Abu az-Zinad, Rabi'ah, and Abu an-Nadr, that there is no disagreement among them regarding the fact that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed by holding his head, and Abu Bakr and Umar did the same. The Shaykh said, "This is the famous opinion among the people of Al-Hijaz."
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ entered from the direction of the qibla (the direction of prayer), and a boundary was set for him, and he was pelted with stones, and mud was thrown on him. This is Abu Burdah, he is Amr ibn Yazid al-Tamimi al-Kufi, and he is weak in narrating hadith. Yahya ibn Ma'in and others weakened him.
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ entered a grave at night and a lantern was brought to him. He took it from the direction of the Qibla and made four takbirs (saying Allahu Akbar) over it. He then said, "May Allah have mercy on you, if you are indeed a follower of the Quran." This narration is weak in its chain of narrators and it has also been narrated from another weak chain of narrators from Ibn Mas'ud. As mentioned by Imam Shafi'i, who is most famous in the land of Hijaz, he takes it from the later generations and this makes it more likely to be followed. And Allah knows best.
9.141 [Machine] What is said when the deceased is put into his grave
When the Prophet ﷺ placed the dead in the grave, he said: In the name of Allah, and following the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. This is Muslim's version. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 3213)
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , said: "When you bury your dead, say 'Bismillah' and according to the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah." Abu Abdullah Al-Hafiz informed us, Ali ibn Hamsazh narrated to us, Musa ibn Harun told us, Zuhaire ibn Harb narrated to me, Waki' narrated to me, Hamam mentioned it, and the Hadith is mentioned exclusively by the narration of Hamam ibn Yahya with this chain of narration, and he is trustworthy, except that Shu'bah and Hisham Al-Dastawaiyy transmitted it from Qatada as a statement attributed directly to Ibn Umar.
[Machine] In the name of Allah, and following the way of the Messenger of Allah (Peace be upon him), it was narrated from another source that Ibn Umar said, with an addition of words, except that it is weak.
[Machine] In the name of Allah, and for the sake of Allah, and on the path of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ . So when he took the milk to level it over the grave, he said, "O Allah, protect it from the devil, from the punishment of the grave, and from the punishment of the Hellfire." Then when he poured the sand on it, he stood beside the grave and said, "O Allah, make the earth dry from its body, raise its soul, and grant it happiness from You." So I said to Ibn 'Umar, "Did you hear anything from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , or is it something you said from your own opinion?" He said, "If that's the case, then I am capable of saying it, but I heard it from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ." Abu Ahmad said, "Thus spoke Idris ibn Subayh al-Awdi, and indeed he is Idris ibn Yazid al-Awdi. I do not know anyone who narrates it other than Hammad ibn Abdu Rahman, and he is scarce in narrating. And Abu Hazim, the memorizer, informed us, narrated to us Ibrahim ibn Rajaa, who informed us about Hasan ibn Sufyan ibn 'Amir, who narrated it to us from Hisham ibn 'Ammaar, who mentioned it similarly, and he said, Idris ibn Yazid al-Awdi narrated it to us, and it was also narrated to us from al-Bayadi from the Prophet ﷺ with the same meaning. Except that he said, "By Allah, and on the path of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ."
[Machine] "And that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, so forgive him his sins and widen his entrance."
9.142 [Machine] What is said after the burial?
[Machine] Uthman used to cry when he stood by a grave until his beard became wet. It was said to him, "You remember Paradise and Hell, so why do you cry from this?" He said, "I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, 'The grave is the first stage of the Hereafter, so whoever is saved from it, then what comes after it is easier for him, and whoever is not saved from it, then what comes after it is harder for him.'" Uthman also said, "I have not seen a sight except that the grave is scarier than it." Uthman reported that when the Prophet ﷺ finished burying the dead, he would say, "Seek forgiveness for your deceased and ask Allah to make him steadfast, for now he is being questioned." This narration was added by someone other than Hisham, and when Uthman stood by the grave of Hisham, he said, "Seek forgiveness and I rely on the statement of the Prophet ﷺ , 'I have not seen a sight like him.'"
[Machine] When Umar would prepare a deceased person for burial, he would say, "O Allah, surrender to You are their family, children, wealth, tribe, and their immense sins, so forgive them."
[Machine] I heard Ibn Abi Mulaykah saying, "I saw Abdullah bin Abbas when he finished burying Abdullah bin As-Sa'ib. The people stood up for him, so Ibn Abbas stood up and prayed for him."
[Machine] He said to his son Abdullah, "When I die, do not accompany me mourning and do not light a fire. When you bury me, pour dirt on me and when you finish digging my grave, stay around my grave as much as it takes to slaughter a number of camels and divide their meat. For I will be kept company by you until I know what I will be returned to my Lord with." Abu Salih ibn Abi Tahir reported to us that my grandfather Yahya ibn Mansur informed him that Ahmad ibn Salamah informed us that Ishaq ibn Mansur informed us that Abu Asim reported to me that Haywah ibn Shuraigh informed me that Yazid ibn Abi Habib informed me from Ibn Shimasa al-Mahri that he said: "We attended Amr ibn Al-Aas while he was in the process of dying, and he mentioned it."
9.143 [Machine] What is mentioned in the reading of the Quran at the grave?
[Machine] He said to his sons, "When you bury me in my grave, shroud me in the linen cloth and say, 'In the name of Allah and according to the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.' And pour the soil over me gently, and recite at my head the beginning and end of Surah Al-Baqarah, for I have seen Ibn 'Umar preferring that."
9.144 [Machine] Abhorrence of Sacrificing at the Grave
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "There is no 'aqar (sacrifice offered at a grave) in Islam." Abdullah ibn Abdul-Razzaq said, "They used to sacrifice a cow or something at the grave. However, Al-Zozani did not mention the statement of Abdullah ibn Abdul-Razzaq."
9.145 [Machine] Who hated moving the deceased from one place to another?
[Machine] When it was the day of Uhud, the deceased were carried to be buried in al-Baqi'. Then a caller called out informing that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded them to bury the deceased in their own graves after my mother carried my father and uncle on her two shoulders to bury them in al-Baqi'. But they refused.
[Machine] A brother of Aisha in Wadi Al-Habasha was carried from his place, so we came to her to offer condolences. She said, "I do not find anything in myself or that saddens me in myself except that I wished he had been buried in his place."
9.146 [Machine] Whoever has not seen harm in it, even though the choosing was in what has passed
[Machine] "So I saw it being carried on the shoulders of men until it was brought and entered into the mosque from the direction of the gate of Marwan's house. It was placed near the Prophet's houses in the courtyard of Hujar, and the imam prayed over it and we prayed upon it with the prayer of the imam."
[Machine] Saad ibn Abi Waqqas was carried from Al-Aqiq to the city, and Usama ibn Zaid was carried from the cliff.
[Machine] Abdul Rahman ibn Abi Bakr was in Safah or near it, so we carried him on the shoulders of men until we buried him in Mecca.
9.147 [Machine] Who moved the deceased from his grave to another place out of necessity?
[Machine] A man was buried with my father on the day of Uhud, so my soul did not feel at ease until I dug him out and reburied him in his own grave.

A man was buried with my father. I had a desire at heart for that (place for my burial). So I took him out after six months. I did not find any change (in his body) except a few hair that touched the earth. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 3232)

For today, I am not the leader of the believers. And say, 'Umar bin Khattab seeks permission to be buried with his two companions.'" He greeted and sought permission, then he entered upon her and found her sitting and crying. He said, "Umar bin Khattab sends greetings to you, and seeks permission to be buried with his two companions." She said, "I wanted it for myself, and I will give him preference today over myself." He came, and when he arrived, it was said, "This is Abdullah bin Umar who has come." He said, "Raise me up." So a man supported him, and he said, "What do you have?" He said, "What you love, O Amir al-Mu'minin, has been granted permission." He said, "Praise be to Allah! Nothing was more important than this bed. When I die, carry me and then greet and say, 'Umar bin Khattab seeks permission.' If she gives you permission, then enter me, and if she denies me, return me to the Muslims' cemetery." He mentioned the hadith, saying, "When he passed away, we carried him and started walking. Abdullah bin Umar greeted and said, 'Umar bin Khattab seeks permission.' She said, 'Let him enter.' So he was brought in and placed next to his two companions."

When the Prophet ﷺ got the news of the death of Ibn Haritha, Jaʿfar and Ibn Rawaha he sat down and looked sad and I was looking at him through the chink of the door. A man came and told him about the crying of the women of Jaʿfar. The Prophet ﷺ ordered him to forbid them. The man went and came back saying that he had told them but they did not listen to him. The Prophet ﷺ said, "Forbid them." So again he went and came back for the third time and said, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! By Allah, they did not listen to us at all." (ʿAisha added): Messenger of Allah ﷺ ordered him to go and put dust in their mouths. I said, (to that man) "May Allah stick your nose in the dust (i.e. humiliate you)! You could neither (persuade the women to) fulfill the order of Messenger of Allah ﷺ nor did you relieve Messenger of Allah ﷺ from fatigue. " (Using translation from Bukhārī 1299)

The Prophet ﷺ then consoled him, saying, 'O so-and-so, which one would you prefer: to have him with you throughout your entire life or that whenever you enter a gate of paradise, you find him waiting for you and opening it for you?' The man replied, 'The Prophet of Allah, I would prefer him to precede me to the gates of paradise.' The Prophet ﷺ said, 'Then that shall be for you.' At that moment, a man from the Ansar stood up and asked the Prophet ﷺ , 'O Prophet of Allah, may I be sacrificed for you! Is this specific to him or is it for anyone who loses a child among the Muslims?' The Prophet ﷺ replied, 'No, rather it is for anyone who loses a child among the Muslims. It will be as if that child is for him.'"
