9. Funerals (12/14)
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "The son of Adam says, 'My wealth, my wealth!' But do you have anything of your wealth except what you eat and consume, what you wear and wear out, or what you give in charity and spend?"
[Machine] I was the youngest companion of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and I heard more from him than anyone else. He said, "Nothing remains for the child from the righteousness of the parent except for four things: praying for them, supplicating for them, fulfilling their pledges after their death, and maintaining good relations with their relatives and honoring their friends."
9.159 [Machine] What is recommended for the guardian of the deceased to give in charity on behalf of him, even if not specifically mentioned?
[Machine] "To the Prophet ﷺ , indeed my mother passed away while in debt, and I think if she were to speak she would be believed. Does she have reward if I give charity on her behalf?" He ﷺ said, "Yes."
9.160 [Machine] The Gathering of Mourning Doors for the Deceased
9.161 [Machine] Prohibition of wailing over the deceased.
We took the oath of allegiance to Messenger of Allah ﷺ and he recited to us: 'They will not associate anything in worship with Allah,' and forbade us to bewail the dead. Thereupon a lady withdrew her hand (refrained from taking the oath of allegiance), and said, "But such-and-such lady lamented over one of my relatives, so I must reward (do the same over the dead relatives of) hers." The Prophet ﷺ did not object to that, so she went (there) and returned to the Prophet ﷺ so he accepted her pledge of allegiance. (Using translation from Bukhārī 4892)
[Machine] We pledged allegiance to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , and he said to us, "Do not associate anything with Allah, and he forbade us from wailing. Then a woman's hand was stretched out to her, and she said, 'O Messenger of Allah, so-and-so made me happy, and I want to repay her.' He did not say anything, so she left and then came back, meaning that he had accepted her allegiance. She said, 'None of us fulfilled her pledge except Umm Sulaym, Umm Al-'Ala', the daughter of Abu Sabrah, the wife of Mu'adh, or the daughter of Abu Sabrah, the wife of Mu'adh.'
[Machine] "Do not associate anything with Allah" [Al-Mumtahana 12] until His statement, "and do not disobey you in what is right" [Al-Mumtahana 12]. Al-Niyahah said, "I said, O Messenger of Allah, except for the sons of so-and-so; for they used to make me happy in the pre-Islamic period, so it is necessary for me to make them happy." He said, "Except for the sons of so-and-so."
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ made a condition for us during the oath of allegiance, that we should not lament. So, none of us fulfilled except for Umm Salamah, Umm Al-Ala, the daughter of Abu Sabrah, the wife of Mu'adh, or the daughter of Abu Sabrah and the wife of Mu'adh.
when the Messenger of Allah accepted the women's oath of allegiance, he accepted their pledge that they would not wail (over the death). They said: "O Messenger of Allah, there are women who helped us to mourn during the Jahiliyyah should we help them to mourn?" The Messenger of Allah said: "There is no helping to mourn in Islam." (Using translation from Nasāʾī 1852)
[Machine] When Abu Salamah died, Umm Salamah said, "I will be a stranger in a foreign land, so I will weep for him with a weeping that can be heard." She said, "When I prepared myself to weep for him, a woman came to see me and the Messenger of Allah greeted her and asked her, 'Do you want to let the devil enter a house that is already filled with grief?'"
9.162 [Machine] What is mentioned in the intensification in wailing and listening to it
Among my people there are four characteristics belonging to pre-Islamic period which they do not abandon: boasting of high rank, reviling other peoples' genealogies, seeking rain by stars, and walling. And he (further) said: If the wailing woman does not repent before she dies, she will be made to stand on the Day of Resurrection wearing a garment of pitch and a chemise of mange. (Using translation from Muslim 934)
[Machine] The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said, "There are two things in people that are considered disbelief: wailing and slandering lineage."
[Machine] Sufyan says, "Indeed, it is the seeking of rain through supplication during the seasons."
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ cursed the wailing woman and the woman who listens to her. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 3128)
[Machine] "He (Ibn Umar) used to say that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ cursed the professional mourners, those who listen to them, those who shave their heads, those who tear their clothes, those who tattoo and those who get tattooed. He also said that women do not receive any reward for attending funerals."
9.163 [Machine] What is forbidden from seeking help in prayer through Al-Jahiliyya, striking the cheek, tearing the garment, spreading poetry, shaving the head, piercing, and scratching.
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "He who strikes the cheeks or tears the garment and calls with the calls of the pre-Islamic era is not one of us." Abu Abdullah al-Hafiz, Abu Saeed ibn Abi Amr, and Abu Tharr ibn Abi al-Husayn ibn Abi al-Qasim al-Muzakkar narrated to us. They said: Abu Abbas Muhammad ibn Ya'qub narrated to us, who narrated from Harun ibn Suleiman, who narrated from Abdul Rahman ibn Mahdi, from Sufyan, from Shu'bah, from Al-A'mash, from Abdullah ibn Murrah, from Masruq, from Abdullah, from the Prophet ﷺ with similar words.
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "He is not one of us who strikes his cheeks, tears his garment, and calls upon the ways of ignorance, for both of these are equal in their sinfulness."
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Indeed, I am free from the one who shaves, plucks, and pierces."
Abu Musa got seriously ill, fainted and could not reply to his wife while he was lying with his head in her lap. When he came to his senses, he said, "I am innocent of those, of whom Messenger of Allah ﷺ was innocent. Messenger of Allah ﷺ is innocent of a woman who cries aloud (or slaps her face) who shaves her head and who tear off her clothes (on the falling of a calamity) (Using translation from Bukhārī 1296)
[Machine] That Abu Musa had a fainting spell, so his wife, the daughter of Abu Murrah, cried over him. Then he woke up and said, "I seek refuge with you from what the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sought refuge from, from those who shave, scalp, and pierce."
One of the oaths which the Messenger of Allah ﷺ received from us about the virtue was that we would not disobey him in it (virtue): that we would not scratch the face, nor wail, nor tear the front of the garments nor dishevel the hair. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 3131)
[Machine] "What did you say to me except that I was told you are like that?"
“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade following a funeral that was accompanied by a wailing woman.” (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 1583)
9.164 [Machine] The desire to seek comfort in Allah's command for patience and repentance.
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ: When you attend dying man, you should say good words, for the angels say Amin to what you say. When Abu Salamah died, I said: What should I say, Messenger of Allah? He said: O Allah forgive him, and give us something good in exchange. She said: So Allah gave me Muhammad ﷺ in exchange for him. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 3115)
If any Muslim who suffers some calamity says, what Allah has commanded him," We belong to Allah and to Him shall we return; O Allah, reward me for my affliction and give me something better than it in exchange for it," Allah will give him something better than it in exchange. When Abu Salama died she said: What Muslim is better than Abu Salama whose family was the first to emigrate to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. I then said the words, and Allah gave me God's Messenger ﷺ in exchange. She said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent Hatib b. Abu Balta'a to deliver me the message of marriage with him. I said to him: I have a daughter (as my dependant) and I am of jealous temperament. He (the Holy Prophet) said: So far as her daughter is concerned, we would supplicate Allah, that He may free her (of her responsibility) and I would also supplicate Allah to do away with (her) jealous (temperament). (Using translation from Muslim 918a)
[Machine] "Indeed, they are the ones upon whom are prayers from their Lord and mercy. And it is those who are [rightly] guided."
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed by a woman at a grave while she was crying. He said to her, "Fear Allah and be patient". She said to him, "Leave me alone, as you have not experienced my affliction". It was said to her, "This is the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ". So, she held him like a dead person and came to the gate of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , but she did not find any gatekeeper. She said, "O Messenger of Allah, I did not recognize you". The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Indeed, patience is at the first shock."
[Machine] The Prophet of Allah ﷺ said, "Patience is when the first shock strikes."
The daughter of the Prophet ﷺ sent (a messenger) to the Prophet ﷺ requesting him to come as her child was dying (or was gasping), but the Prophet ﷺ returned the messenger and told him to convey his greeting to her and say: "Whatever Allah takes is for Him and whatever He gives, is for Him, and everything with Him has a limited fixed term (in this world) and so she should be patient and hope for Allah's reward." She again sent for him, swearing that he should come. The Prophet ﷺ got up, and so did Saʿd bin 'Ubada, Muʿadh bin Jabal, Ubai bin Kaʿb, Zaid bin Thabit and some other men. The child was brought to Messenger of Allah ﷺ while his breath was disturbed in his chest (the sub-narrator thinks that Usama added: ) as if it was a leather water-skin. On that the eyes of the Prophet ﷺ started shedding tears. Saʿd said, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! What is this?" He replied, "It is mercy which Allah has lodged in the hearts of His slaves, and Allah is merciful only to those of His slaves who are merciful (to others). (Using translation from Bukhārī 1284)
[Machine] Anas's wife, Umm Sulaim, who was Anas's mother, said, "I saw this man, meaning the Prophet ﷺ, forbidding alcohol, so I left until I reached Sham and ruined myself there. Then Abu Talha proposed to Umm Sulaim and spoke to her about it, and she said, 'O Abu Talha, there is no one like you, but you are a disbeliever and I am a Muslim woman. It is not suitable for me to marry you.' He asked, 'Why is that?' She replied, 'Because I don't want yellow or white, I want Islam from you.' He asked, 'Who can provide that for me?' She said, 'The Messenger of Allah ﷺ can.' So Abu Talha left, intending to meet the Prophet ﷺ while the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was sitting among his companions. When he saw him, Abu Talha said, 'Abu Talha, a new convert to Islam, has come to you.' So he came and informed the Prophet ﷺ about what Umm Sulaim had said. The Prophet ﷺ married her based on that. Thabit said, 'We have not heard that a dowry greater than the Islam itself was requested. so he married her. She was a woman of beautiful eyes and had some minor issues. She stayed with him until she gave birth to a son, whom Abu Talha loved ardently. When the baby became ill, Abu Talha humbled himself or it hurt him, so Abu Talha went to the Prophet ﷺ. The baby died, and Umm Sulaim said, 'No one should inform Abu Talha of his son's death except me.' She prepared the child and placed him to one side. Then Abu Talha went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ until he entered upon him and said, 'How is my son?' She said, 'O Abu Talha, from the time my son complained of pain, no one can be better than him. He immediately came [to you].' Then she handed him his son. Birth had occurred during the night, close to Madinah. She said, 'O Allah, I used to bring my child whenever your Prophet entered or left. This situation has occurred, so she brought her child and handed him to the Prophet ﷺ while he was riding a dromedary or a sheep. When he saw the child, he said to Anas, 'Did the daughter of Milhan give birth?' Anas said, 'Yes.' Then the Prophet ﷺ held what was in his hand and blessed it with prayers and supplications. Then the Prophet ﷺ fed the child some dates and named him Abdullah. Thabit said, 'Abdullah was known to be one of the best Muslims.'

[Machine] In Mecca, there were two seats, and they had a son who would carry them in the morning and bring them to the mosque, then he would leave to earn for them. When evening came, he would carry them and then flip them over. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ lost them and asked about them. They said he had died. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "If one person is left for another, then the son of the two seats would have been left." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to say that very often, as mentioned in the hadith of Dawud.

She replied, "May Allah have mercy on him, we belong to Allah and to Him we shall return." It was said to her, "Your husband has been killed." She said, "We are saddened by it." The Prophet ﷺ said, "Indeed, a woman has a branch of faith in her that is not for anything."

9.165 [Machine] What is expected in a calamity with children when one counts them?
[Machine] From the Prophet ﷺ , he said: "No Muslim person will have three children who die, without the fire touching them, except for the necklace of determination."
[Machine] We gathered and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to us and taught us from what Allah had taught him. Then he said, "Any woman who has three children before her will have a veiling from the Fire (of Hell)." A woman said, "O Messenger of Allah, what about two (children)?" He said, "Even two."
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Whoever is afflicted with children, whether they number two or three, who have not yet reached the age of puberty, then he should consider them as a protection for himself against the Hellfire."
In case anyone amongst you sees the sad demise of three children of (hers) and she resigns herself to the will of God hoping to get reward, she would be admitted to Paradise. A woman from amongst them said: Messenger of Allah, even if they (the children who die) are two. Thereupon, he (the Holy Prophet, ) said: Even if they are two. (Using translation from Muslim 2632c)
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Any Muslim who is not reached by three things will enter Paradise by the mercy of Allah: reaching the age of maturity, hearing the call to prayer, and performing Hajj."
[Machine] A woman came to the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and said, "O Messenger of Allah, I have buried three of my children." He replied, "You have surely saved them from intense heat of the fire."
[Machine] I asked Abu Hurairah, "Both of my sons have died. Are you aware of any hadith from the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ that can bring comfort to us from our deaths?" He replied, "Yes, indeed. Their young ones are the little ones of paradise. One of them meets his parents or his father, and he takes hold of his hand just as I am holding a part of your robe. He does not let go until Allah and he enter paradise together." And Abu Abdullah Al-Hafiz informed us that Abu Bakr Muhammad ibn Ahmad ibn Hatim Al-Darbardy narrated to us from Marw regarding Abu Al-Muthanna Al-Anbari, who narrated from Musaddad, who narrated from Yahya, who mentioned this hadith except that he said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Their young ones are the little ones of paradise.'"

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "There is no Muslim person who has three children that have not reached the age of puberty, except that Allah will admit them and their parents to Paradise by His mercy. They will be at one of the gates of Paradise, and it will be said to them, 'Enter Paradise.' They will say, 'Not until our parents come.' Then it will be said to them, 'Enter Paradise, you and your parents, by the mercy of Allah.' There are many narrations about this gate, and what we have mentioned is sufficient."
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "What do you consider to be arrogance among you?" They said, "It is the one who does not have children." He said, "That is not arrogance, but rather it is the man who does not give anything to his children." He said, "Then what do you consider stubbornness among you?" They said, "It is the one who cannot be conquered by men." He said, "No, that is not it, but rather it is the one who controls himself when he is angry." This is the narration of Jarir. And in the narration of Abu Mu'awiyah, there is mention of precedence and delay. He said, firstly, "What do you consider stubbornness among you?" They said, "It is the one who cannot be conquered by men." He said, "No, but stubbornness is the one who controls himself when he is angry." And the Messenger of Allah ﷺ also said, "What do you consider arrogance among you?" They said, "Arrogance is the one who does not have children." He said, "No, but arrogance is the one who does not give anything to his children."

[Machine] I buried my son Sinan and Abu Talhah Al-Khawlani was sitting on the edge of the grave. He said, "Al-Dhahak ibn Abd al-Rahman told me that Abu Musa said, 'The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, When Allah takes the soul of His servant, He asks His angels, What did my servant say?' They say, 'He praised You and sought forgiveness from You.' Allah says, 'Build for him a house in Jannah and name it the House of Praise.'"

[Machine] Allah ﷺ says: 'Whoever has two qualities from my Ummah, Allah will admit him to Jannah.' Aisha said, 'Even if it is only one, O Messenger of Allah?' He said, 'Even if it is only one, O successful one.' Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'As for those who do not possess one of the qualities, I and whoever does not possess one of the qualities and is not afflicted with the same as I am, will not be safe.' And Imam Abu At-Tayyib Sahl ibn Muhammad ibn Sulayman, may Allah have mercy on him, told us that Abu Al-Hasan Muhammad ibn Abdullah ibn Ali Ad-Daqqaq informed us that Muhammad ibn Ibrahim Al-Abdi narrated to us from Isa ibn Ibrahim Al-Barqi, who narrated it from Abdul-Rabbih Bariqi Al-Hanafi, who mentioned it with its meaning.

9.166 [Machine] The License in Crying without Blame or Lamentation
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ came with the daughter of his daughter, and she was screaming as if she were in a trance. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "To Allah belongs what He takes, and to Allah belongs what He gives, and everything has a designated time. And he wept. Sa'd ibn 'Ubadah said to him, "O Messenger of Allah, you are weeping even though you have prohibited crying?" The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Verily, it is a mercy that Allah has placed in the hearts of His servants. Indeed, Allah shows mercy to the merciful among His servants."
A child was born into me this night and I named him after the name of my father Ibrihim. He then sent him to Umm Saif, the wife of a blacksmith who was called Abu Saif. He (the Holy Prophet) went to him and I followed him until we reached Abu Saif and he was blowing fire with the help of blacksmith's bellows and the house was filled with smoke. I hastened my step and went ahead of Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said: Abu Saif, stop it, as there comes Messenger of Allah (may peace he upon him). He stopped and Allah's Apostle ﷺ called for the child. He embraced him and said what Allah had desired. Anas said: I saw that the boy breathed his last in the presence of Messenger of Allah ﷺ. The eyes of Messenger of Allah ﷺ shed tears and he said: Ibrahim, our eyes shed tears and our hearts are filled with grief, but we do not say anything except that by which Allah is pleased. O Ibrahim, we are grieved for you. (Using translation from Muslim 2315)

[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ went out with Abdullah ibn Awf to the date palm trees, and suddenly his son Ibrahim began to gasp for breath. So the Prophet put him down in his lap, and his eyes filled with tears. Abdullah ibn Awf said, "Are you crying while you forbid people from crying?" The Prophet said, "I do not forbid crying, but I forbid two foolish and sinful voices: a voice at the sound of play and amusement, and the flutes of Satan, and a voice at the time of a calamity that involves tearing of faces and cutting of pockets, and wailing. This is a mercy, and whoever does not show mercy will not be shown mercy. O Ibrahim! Had it not been the fact that this is a promise of Allah and a matter that is true, and that our last will join our first, we would have been more grief-stricken because of you than this. We are saddened by you, O Ibrahim!" His eyes were shedding tears, his heart was saddened, and we do not say anything that angers the Lord.

Saʿd bin 'Ubada became sick and the Prophet ﷺ along with ʿAbdur Rahman bin ʿAuf, Saʿd bin Abi Waqqas and ʿAbdullah bin Masʿud visited him to inquire about his health. When he came to him, he found him surrounded by his household and he asked, "Has he died?" They said, "No, O Allah's Apostle." The Prophet ﷺ wept and when the people saw the weeping of Messenger of Allah ﷺ they all wept. He said, "Will you listen? Allah does not punish for shedding tears, nor for the grief of the heart but he punishes or bestows His Mercy because of this." He pointed to his tongue and added, "The deceased is punished for the wailing of his relatives over him." ʿUmar used to beat with a stick and throw stones and put dust over the faces (of those who used to wail over the dead). (Using translation from Bukhārī 1304)
9.167 [Machine] Who has the permission to cry until the one being mourned dies?
[Machine] He informed him that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to visit Abdullah bin Thabit and found him defeated, so he shouted at him but he did not respond. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ retraced his steps and said, "We have conquered you, O Abu Ar-Rabi'a, and the women shouted and cried." Ibn 'Atiyyah silenced them, so the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Leave them, and when the victory comes, do not cry." "What is victory, O Messenger of Allah?" he asked. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "When he dies."
[Machine] When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ returned from the Battle of Uhud, he heard the women of the Ansar crying. He said, "But Hamza has no one to cry for him." This news reached the women of the Ansar, so they cried for Hamza. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then went to sleep, and when he woke up, the women were still crying. He said, "Woe to them! Why are they still crying since that day? Let them be silent and not cry for the dead after today." It has been narrated by Usama from Nafi' from Ibn 'Umar.
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ returned on the day of Uhud and heard the women of Banu Abd al-Ashhal crying for their dead. He said, "But Hamzah has no women to cry for him." So the women of the Ansar came and cried for Hamzah in his presence. He then went to sleep and woke up to find them still crying. He said, "Woe to them! They have cried enough for him. They should return and not cry for the deceased after today." And his statement, "They should not cry for the deceased after today" means that if he wanted it to be a general prohibition, it would be like his statement in the hadith of Ibn Atiyyah: "If the mourning period is complete, then do not cry for the deceased." And it is possible that what is meant by "the deceased" here are the martyrs of Uhud, as if he was saying, "It is enough that I have not cried for them." And it has been established that there is permission to cry after death with tears and sorrow in the heart. So the hadith of Jabir ibn Atiyyah is applicable to choose from. And Allah knows best.
