9. Funerals (13/14)
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ mourned Ja'far, Zayd bin Harithah, and Abdullah bin Rawahah before their news arrived. He mourned them as tears rolled down his eyes.
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ visited the grave of his mother and cried, causing those around him to also cry. Then he said, "I sought permission from my Lord to visit her grave, and He granted me permission. I also sought permission from Him to seek forgiveness for her, but He did not grant me permission. So, visit the graves, as they remind you of death."
[Machine] Salama said, "Do not say that, O Abu Abdullah, for I bear witness on the authority of Abu Huraira that I heard him say: 'I accompanied the Prophet ﷺ once at a funeral procession along with Umar ibn Khattab and there were women crying. Umar restrained them and scolded them. The Prophet ﷺ said to Umar, 'Leave them, O Umar, for the eye weeps, the heart feels sorrow, and the tongue speaks out of habit.' They asked Umar, 'Did you hear him say this?' He replied, 'Yes.' Ibn Umar then said, 'By Allah, the Messenger of Allah knows better, for he said it twice.'"
[Machine] "Allah, ﷺ , said: 'Beware of the whisperings of Satan, for they may come from the eye or the heart, which is from mercy. But if they come from the tongue or the hand, then they are from Satan.' He said: 'And Fatimah began crying at the edge of Ruqayyah's grave, so the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , wiped the tears from her face with his hand or he said with his garment.' And this, although not very strong, is his statement, ﷺ , in the verified hadith from him: 'Verily, Allah does not punish with tears from the eye or sadness in the heart, but He punishes with this.' And he pointed to his tongue or his hand, indicating its meaning. And success is with Allah."
[Machine] To shed tears on Abu Suleiman as long as it is not a dire situation or distress.
[Machine] "From Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him), he said: my father called upon Allah and he answered him, and from that matter was,"
9.169 [Machine] Context of news indicating that the deceased is being punished by mourning over him, and what was narrated about Aisha in that.
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ said: "Verily, the deceased is punished with the cries of mourning over him in his grave." This narration is authentically reported in the hadith of Shu'bah.
[Machine] About the Prophet ﷺ , he said: "The deceased is punished because of the crying and wailing done over him in his grave."
The dead is punished because of the lamentation of the living. (Using translation from Muslim 930)
[Machine] "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Verily, the deceased is punished by the weeping of his family over him.'"
[Machine] Umar was stabbed, and Suhaib said, "Oh my brother!" Umar then said to him, "Oh Suhaib, did you not know that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Verily, the dead person is punished by the weeping of the living'?"
O Hafsa, did you not hear the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying:" One who is lamented would be punished"? Suhaib also lamented over him. 'Umar told him also: O Suhaib, didn't you know that one who is lamented is punished? (Using translation from Muslim 927g)
[Machine] "What is this mourning in Islam?" They said, "A man from the Ansar called Qaradhatu bin Kaab has died, so we are lamenting for him." Al-Mughira said, "I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying, "Whoever lies about me deliberately, let him occupy his seat in Hellfire. And I also heard the Prophet of Allah ﷺ saying, "Whoever is mourned over, he will be punished for what is mourned over him."
[Machine] I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying, "Whoever intentionally lies about me, then he should prepare his place in the Fire. And I heard him saying, "Whoever mourns excessively for him, then he will be punished for his excessive mourning."
[Machine] "That the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Verily, the deceased is punished by the weeping of the living."
[Machine] He did not understand anything, but he passed by the funeral of a Jewish man, and his family was mourning him. So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "They are crying over him, and indeed he is being punished."
Note: The translation is a literal meaning of the passage and may not convey the full context or nuanced interpretation.
[Machine] "Do not cry for them, for the crying of the living is a punishment for the dead." And he said about Umrah, "So I asked Aisha about that, and she said, 'May Allah have mercy on him, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ only said that to a Jewish woman and her people as they were crying over her, and indeed, she was being punished in her grave."
[Machine] Indeed, he did not lie but rather he made a mistake or forgot. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed by a Jewish woman while her family was crying over her. He said, "Indeed, they cry over her, but she is being punished in her grave." 7175 Abu Abdullah Al-Hafiz informed us, Abu Abdullah Al-Shaybani narrated to me, and my father and Muhammad ibn Shadhan said: Qutaybah ibn Sa'id narrated from Malik ibn Anas, and he mentioned it with his chain of narrators except that he said: Ummarah bint Abdul Rahman informed him, and she said, "Aisha said, 'May Allah forgive Abu Abdur Rahman.' And she said, 'He cried over her.'"
One of the daughters of ʿUthman died at Mecca. We went to attend her funeral procession. Ibn ʿUmar and Ibn ʿAbbas were also present. I sat in between them (or said, I sat beside one of them. Then a man came and sat beside me.) ʿAbdullah bin ʿUmar said to ʿAmr bin ʿUthman, "Will you not prohibit crying as Messenger of Allah ﷺ has said, 'The dead person is tortured by the crying of his relatives.?" Ibn ʿAbbas said, "ʿUmar used to say so." Then he added narrating, "I accompanied ʿUmar on a journey from Mecca till we reached Al-Baida. There he saw some travelers in the shade of a Samura (A kind of forest tree). He said (to me), "Go and see who those travelers are." So I went and saw that one of them was Suhaib. I told this to ʿUmar who then asked me to call him. So I went back to Suhaib and said to him, "Depart and follow the chief of the faithful believers." Later, when ʿUmar was stabbed, Suhaib came in weeping and saying, "O my brother, O my friend!" (on this ʿUmar said to him, "O Suhaib! Are you weeping for me while the Prophet ﷺ said, "The dead person is punished by some of the weeping of his relatives?" Ibn ʿAbbas added, "When ʿUmar died I told all this to Aisha and she said, 'May Allah be merciful to ʿUmar. By Allah, Messenger of Allah ﷺ did not say that a believer is punished by the weeping of his relatives. But he said, Allah increases the punishment of a non-believer because of the weeping of his relatives." Aisha further added, "The Qur'an is sufficient for you (to clear up this point) as Allah has stated: 'No burdened soul will bear another's burden.' " (35.18). Ibn ʿAbbas then said, "Only Allah makes one laugh or cry." Ibn ʿUmar did not say anything after that. (Using translation from Bukhārī 1286)

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , is more likely to be preserved through the indication of the Book, then the Sunnah. If it is said, "Where is the indication of the Book?" It is said, "In the saying of Allah, 'No bearer of burdens will bear the burden of another' [Surah Al-An'am: 164], and His saying, 'And that man can have nothing but what he strives for' [Surah An-Najm: 39], and His saying, 'So whoever does an atom's weight of good will see it, and whoever does an atom's weight of evil will see it' [Surah Az-Zalzalah: 8], and His saying, 'So that every soul may be recompensed for what it earned' [Surah Taha: 15]." If it is said, "Where is the indication of the Sunnah?" It is said, "The Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , said to a man about his son, 'Is he your son?' The man replied, 'Yes.' The Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , said, 'Know that verily, he does not bring loss to you, nor does he bring profit to you. Rather, the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , knows just as Allah knows, that the sin of every person is upon him alone, as he did it for himself, not for anyone else and not for him.' Ash-Shafi'i and 'Umarah were the most diligent in preserving from 'Aisha, more than from Ibn Abi Mulaykah, and her hadith is most likely to be preserved. If the hadith is according to what Ibn Abi Mulaykah narrated and not according to what he narrated from the Prophet, ﷺ , then it is correct, for the disbeliever is punished more severely than him. If he is punished without it, then it increases in his punishment, but not more than what the disbeliever deserves, and what is added to it is due to his response, not due to the sin of someone else when they weep for him. If it is said that weeping increases punishment for him, then it is said that it increases due to what he has earned through his deeds, and their weeping is a cause for obedience, so just as he is rewarded for what is a cause for obedience, it is possible for him to be punished for what is a cause for sinning. And success is from Allah.

9.170 [Machine] Who dislikes eulogy, adhan and the fate that cannot be disliked?

[Machine] Huzaifah, when there was a funeral in his family, nobody would announce it, and he would say, "I am afraid that it may become a eulogy. I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbidding eulogies." This is narrated from Ibn Mas'ud, Ibn Umar, Abu Sa'eed, Alqamah, Ibn al-Musayyab, Rabi'ah ibn Khaytham, and Ibrahim al-Nakhai. It has also been reported to me from Malik ibn Anas that he said, "I do not like shouting about a man's death at the doors of the mosques. Even if he stands on the steps of the mosques and people know about his death, there is no harm in that." And it has been reported from Anas ibn Malik that the Prophet ﷺ eulogized Ja'far, Zaid, Ibn Rawaha, and from Abu Hurairah that the Prophet ﷺ eulogized the Najashi. And from him regarding the death of a man who used to stand in the mosque and was buried at night, "Why didn't you inform me?" And in another narration, "What prevented you from informing me?"

[Machine] We used to inform the Prophet (PBUH) whenever one of us passed away, and he would come and seek forgiveness for the deceased until the burial was done. Sometimes he would sit along with us until the burial, and other times he would leave before that. It was burdensome for him, so some people suggested that we should not inform the Prophet (PBUH) until after the burial, so that he wouldn't have to go through the hardship. We followed their suggestion and informed him after the burial, and he would come and pray for the deceased. Sometimes he would leave immediately, and other times he would stay until the burial was done. We continued to do this until today.

So they spoke well of him. Another procession passed by and he said, "Speak ill of him." So they spoke ill of him. There is evidence in this hadith that they only praised one funeral and criticized the other when the Prophet ﷺ commanded them to praise them. And there is evidence that it is permissible to mention what is known about a person when there is a need for it, such as asking a judge or something similar to that. It is as if those who spoke ill of him were proclaiming his evil and the Prophet ﷺ wanted to deter people like him from their evil deeds and from indulging in idle talk. So he said, "What did he say? Allah knows best."

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ visited his mother's grave and wept and cause those around him to weep. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then said: I asked my Lord's permission to pray for forgiveness for her, but I was not allowed. I then asked His permission to visit her grave, and I was allowed. So visit graves, for they make one mindful of death. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 3234)

[Machine] We went out with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on a journey, and we stopped at a place while we were close to a thousand riders. He stood up and prayed two units of prayer, then he came to us with tears in his eyes. 'Umar came to him and said, may my parents be sacrificed for you, O Messenger of Allah. He said, "I sought permission from my Lord to seek forgiveness for my mother, but He did not grant me permission, so I cried and begged for her mercy from the Fire. And I used to prohibit you from visiting graves, but now visit them. I used to prohibit you from keeping the meat of the sacrificed animals for more than three days, but now eat it and keep what appears to be good to you. But now, visit the graves, for they remind you of the Hereafter and detach you from the worldly life. Eat the meat of sacrificial animals and keep what you wish, for I had only forbidden you from it because good was scarce, but Allah has made it plentiful for the people. Indeed, there is no vessel that renders anything forbidden, and indeed, every intoxicant is prohibited."

So, visit them, and do not utter harsh words."

They said, "No." He asked, "Do you guide the procession?" They said, "No." He asked, "Do you wash the deceased?" They said, "No." He then said, "Go back, for you are instruments of falsehood and not rewarded. In the narration of Ar-Rudhbari, it is mentioned that they are fabricators of lies." Thereupon, Abu Abdullah Al-Hafith informed us, saying: Abu Al-Abbas narrated to us, who heard from Yahya bin Abi Talib, who heard from Ishaq bin Mansur, who heard from Israel that he mentioned it with his chain of narrators that the Prophet ﷺ passed by some women and asked them, "Why are you waiting?" They replied, "We are waiting for the funeral." However, the mentioning of washing was not mentioned.

[Machine] "Allah's peace and blessings be upon him, he saw his daughter Fatimah and said to her, 'Where are you coming from, Fatimah?' She replied, 'I am coming from behind the funeral of this man.' He asked, 'Did you reach them while they were burying him?' She said, 'No, how could I reach them when I heard from you what I heard?' The Prophet, ﷺ , said, 'By the One in whose hand is my soul, if you had reached them while they were burying him, you would not have seen Paradise until your grandfather had seen it.'"

9.177 [Machine] What is mentioned in the prohibition against visiting graves?
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "May Allah curse the visitors of graves."
“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ cursed women who visit graves.” (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 1574)
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ cursed those who visit graves and build mosques and lights on them. The wording of the hadith is from Shu'ba, and in their narration it is "the visitors of graves and those who build mosques and lights on them".
9.178 [Machine] What is mentioned in their entry into his general saying so forge it
[Machine] One day, a certain woman came from the graves, so I said to her, "O Mother of the Believers, where did you come from?" She said, "I came from the grave of my brother, Abdur-Rahman ibn Abu Bakr." So I said to her, "Wasn't it the Messenger of Allah ﷺ who forbade visiting graves?" She said, "Yes, he forbade it, then he later commanded for it to be visited. He specifically singled out Bistam ibn Muslim al-Basri for it." And Allah knows best.
[Machine] The daughter of the Prophet ﷺ used to visit the grave of her uncle Hamzah every Friday. She would pray and cry at his grave. This was narrated by Sulayman ibn Dawud from his father, from Ja'far ibn Muhammad, from his father, without mentioning Ali ibn al-Hussein, from his father, concerning this matter. Although we have been told in a reliable hadith narrated by Anas ibn Malik that the Prophet ﷺ passed by a woman crying at a grave and said to her, "Fear Allah and be patient." There is no news that he prohibited women from going out to the graveyard. This strengthens what has been narrated from Aisha, except that the most authentic narration on this matter is the explicit hadith of Umm 'Atiyyah, supported by other reports. If they were to refrain from following the funeral processions and going out to the graves and visiting the graves, it would be better for their religion. And with Allah is all success.

9.179 [Machine] What do you say when you enter a graveyard
“Peace be upon you, abode of believing people. We will join you soon, if Allah wills.” Then he said: “Would that we could see our brothers.” They said: “O Messenger of Allah, are we not your brothers?” He said: “You are my Companions. My brothers are those who will come after me. I will reach the Cistern ahead of you.” They said: “O Messenger of Allah, how will you recognize those of your nation who have not yet come?” He said: “If a man has a horse with a blaze on its forehead and white feet, don’t you think that he will recognize it among horses that are deep black in color?” They said: “Of course.” He said: “On the Day of Resurrection they will come with radiant faces, hands, and feet, because of the traces of ablution.” He said: “I will reach the Cistern ahead of you.” Then he said: “Men will be driven away from my Cistern just as stray camels are driven away. And I will call to them: ‘Come here!’ But it will be said: ‘They changed after you were gone, and they kept turning on their heels.’ So I will say: “Be off with you!” (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 4306)

Peace be upon you, abode of a people who are believers. What you were promised would come to you tomorrow, you receiving it after some delay; and God willing we shall join you. O Allah, grant forgiveness to the inhabitants of Baqi' al-Gharqad. Qutaiba did not mention his words:" would come to you". (Using translation from Muslim 974a)
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: I said yes, so he mentioned the hadith regarding his going out to Al-Baqi' and his return. She asked, "How should I say, O Messenger of Allah?" He said, "Say: Peace be upon the inhabitants of the dwellings from the believers and the Muslims. May Allah have mercy on those who have gone ahead of us and those who come later, and indeed, we will join you, Allah willing."
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to teach them when they entered the graves, and he would say to them, "Peace be upon you, O people of the dwellings, from the believers and the Muslims. Indeed, if Allah wills, we will join you. We ask Allah for well-being for us and for you."
