9. Funerals (14/14)
“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to teach them, when they went out to the graveyard, to say: As-salamu ‘alaykum ahlad-diyar minal-mu’minina wal- muslimin, wa inna insha’ Allah bikum lahiqun, nas’alul-laha lana wa lakumul-‘afiyah (Peace be upon you, O inhabitants of the abodes, believers and Muslims, and we will join you soon if Allah wills. We ask Allah for well-being for us and for you).’” (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 1547)
9.180 [Machine] Prohibition of sitting on graves: The narration of Jabir ibn Abdullah from the Prophet ﷺ regarding the prohibition of that.
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "It is better for one of you to sit on a hot coal or on fire until it burns his clothes, than to sit upon a grave." In another narration by Ali, it is stated, "It is better for one of you to sit on a hot coal until it reaches his skin, than to sit upon a grave."
[Machine] I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying, "Do not sit on graves and do not pray towards them, for their words are equal, except that Ibn Mazid narrated from Wathilah ibn Al-Asqa’, who said: Abu Marthad Al-Ghanawi narrated to me..."
9.181 [Machine] Walking among the graves in sandals
[Machine] Narrated about the Messenger of Allah ﷺ whose name in the pre-Islamic era was Zuhmah bin Ma'bad. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked him, "What is your name?" He replied, "Zuhmah bin Ma'bad." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "You are Basheer (bearer of good news)." So, his name was changed to Basheer. I (i.e., the narrator) used to walk with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , and he said to me, "O son of the washerwoman, why do you spend time with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while you seek revenge against Allah?" I replied, "I do not seek revenge against Allah for anything. Allah always does good to me." He then came to the graves of the polytheists and said, "Indeed, these people have been surpassed by a lot of good, three times." Then he came to the graves of the Muslims and said, "Indeed, these people have achieved a lot of good, three times." While he was walking, he cast his gaze upon a man walking among the graves, carrying two sandals. He said, "O owner of two sandals, woe be upon you! Throw away your sandals." The man looked up, and when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ recognized him, he took off his sandals and threw them away. This is a Hadith that has been narrated.
[Machine] Narrated by Muhammad ibn Abdullah al-Hafiz, Abu al-Fadl al-Hasan ibn Ya'qub al-Adl, Yahya ibn Abi Talib, Abd al-Wahhab ibn Ata, Sa'eed ibn Qatadah, and Anas ibn Malik that the Prophet of Allah ﷺ said, "When the servant is placed in his grave and his companions turn away from him, he hears the noise of their sandals. Then two angels come to him and ask, 'What did you say about this man, Muhammad ﷺ?' The believer says, 'I bear witness that he is the servant of Allah and His Messenger.' They say to him, 'Look at your place in the Fire, for Allah has replaced it with a place in Paradise.' He then sees both places."

9.182 [Machine] Prohibition of building a mosque on a grave
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "May Allah curse the Jews; they made the graves of their Prophets places of worship."
When the last moment of the life of Messenger of Allah ﷺ came he started putting his 'Khamisa' on his face and when he felt hot and short of breath he took it off his face and said, "May Allah curse the Jews and Christians for they built the places of worship at the graves of their Prophets." The Prophet ﷺ was warning (Muslims) of what those had done. (Using translation from Bukhārī 435)
When the Prophet ﷺ became ill, some of his wives talked about a church which they had seen in Ethiopia and it was called Mariya. Um Salma and Um Habiba had been to Ethiopia, and both of them narrated its (the Church's) beauty and the pictures it contained. The Prophet ﷺ raised his head and said, "Those are the people who, whenever a pious man dies amongst them, make a place of worship at his grave and then they make those pictures in it. Those are the worst creatures in the Sight of Allah." (Using translation from Bukhārī 1341)
