23. Book of Quranic Exegesis (Tafsīr) (7/23)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
We have begun in this book with the descent of the Quran, in what has been narrated in the Musnad concerning the recitations, and the mention of the companions who compiled and memorized the Quran, before the interpretation of the Surahs.
[Machine] "It was hemorrhoid with him, so the Prophet ﷺ ordered him to pray on his side."
[Machine] "That they will come out of the Fire, but they are not to come out of it. [Quran 5:37] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ informed me that they are the disbelievers," Jaber said. I said to him, as stated in [Quran 3:192], "Indeed, whoever you admit to the Fire - you have disgraced him." Allah has indeed disgraced him when he burned him with fire, or with other disgraceful punishments in the deep ocean.
from a man among the children of Umm Salamah, from Umm Salamah that she said: "O Messenger of Allah! I have not heard Allah mentioning anything about women and emigration." So Allah, Blessed and Most High, revealed: "Never will I allow to be lost the work of any of you, be he male or female. You are members one of another (3:195)." (Using translation from Tirmidhī 3023)
[Machine] An enemy from their land came to the Najashi, so the emigrants went to him and said, "We would like to accompany you and fight alongside you so that you can witness our courage and reward us for what you have done with us." Najashi replied, "There is no medicine like the help of Allah rather than the help of people." He then recited the verse, "And indeed, among the People of the Scripture are those who believe in Allah and what has been revealed to you and what was revealed to them, [being] humbly submissive to Allah." [Surah Al Imran 199]
[Machine] Abu Ubaidah was besieged in Syria and the people rebelled against him. Omar wrote to him: "Peace be upon you. Afterward, what comes down to a faithful servant from a state of severity, Allah will make relief for him thereafter. No difficulty overwhelms him who perseveres. O you who have believed, be patient and endure and remain stationed and fear Allah that you may be successful." [Al-Imran 200]. Abu Ubaidah replied to Omar: "Peace be upon you. Afterward, Allah says in his book: 'Know that the worldly life is but amusement and diversion and adornment and boasting to one another and competition in increase of wealth and children.' [Al-Hadid 20] until its end." Omar then left with his letter and sat on the pulpit and read to the people of Medina. Then he said: "O people of Medina, Abu Ubaidah only wants you to be eager for jihad."
[Machine] I heard Abu Huraira say, "During the time of the Prophet ﷺ , there was no campaign in which the soldiers would stay in a particular place, but there was waiting for the prayer after the prayer."
23.4 [Machine] Translation: The interpretation of Surah An-Nisa
[Machine] Regarding Surah An-Nisa, I have indeed read the Quran while I was young.
[Machine] "Verily, ties of kinship are severed, and verily, blessings are denied, and verily, when Allah brings hearts closer, nothing can ever separate them." Then he recited: "If you were to spend all that is on Earth, you could not have brought their hearts together." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Family ties are a branch of mercy from the Most Merciful, and it will come on the Day of Resurrection speaking with a fluent tongue. Whoever maintains it, Allah will maintain him, and whoever severs it, Allah will sever him."
[Machine] There was a conversation between Abu Talha and Umm Sulaim. Abu Talha intended to divorce Umm Sulaim. This matter reached the Prophet ﷺ , who said, "The divorce of Umm Sulaim is an act of disobedience."
[Machine] On the authority of the Prophet ﷺ who said: "There are three people whose supplications are not answered by Allah: a man who has a wife with bad manners and does not divorce her, a man who possesses money owed to someone else and does not testify for him, and a person who gives his wealth to a fool, even though Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, said: 'And do not give the foolish your property.' [Quran 4:5]"
[Machine] To suffice until he does not need the wealth of the orphan.
[Machine] They are appeased by them, so if there is any shortfall in money, apologize to them.
When Allah, Most High, revealed the verses: "Come not nigh to the orphan's property except to improve it". And "Those who unjustly eat up the property of orphans", everyone who had an orphan with him went and separated his food from his (orphan's) food, and his drink from his drink, and began to detain the remaining food which he (the orphan) himself ate or spoiled. This fell heavy on them, and they mentioned this to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. So Allah, Most High, revealed the verse: "They ask thee concerning orphans. Say: The best thing to do is what is for their good; if ye mix their affairs with yours, they are your brethren." Then they mixed their food with his food and their drink with his drink. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 2871)
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to visit me when I was sick in Bani Salamah, so I said, "O Messenger of Allah, how should I distribute my wealth among my children?" He did not respond to me, and then the verse was revealed: "Allah instructs you concerning your children" [Quran 4:11]. The two great scholars, Ash-Shafi'i and Malik, agreed on the authenticity of the narration of Shu'bah from Muhammad ibn Al-Munkadir on this matter, with different wording. And this is a reliable chain of narration, and they did not exclude it from its origin.
[Machine] "Because I asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about three things that are dearer to me than red camels: who will be the caliph after him, and people who say that we do not have to pay zakat on our wealth and we will not give it to you, is it permissible to fight them? And about keffiyeh."
[Machine] I was the last person to make a deal with Omar, so I heard him saying: "The saying is what I said, and what did you say?" He replied, "I said, 'A barren woman is one who has no children.'" This is a sound Hadith according to the conditions of the two Sheikhs (referring to Imam Bukhari and Imam Muslim), but they did not include it in their collections.
“There are three things, if the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had clarified them, that would have been dearer to me than the world and everything in it: a person who leaves behind no heir, usury, and the caliphate.” (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 2727)
[Machine] "Seven types of close relatives are prohibited in marriage: your mothers, daughters, sisters, aunts, nieces, daughters of brothers, and daughters of sisters. This is regarding lineage. And your nursing mothers, sisters through nursing, mothers of your wives, and stepdaughters who are fostered with you – but if you have not fostered them – there is no harm in marrying them. And also prohibited are the wives of your sons who are from your own loins, and to marry two sisters at the same time, except what has already occurred. And it is also forbidden to marry the wives of your fathers from among women." (Quran, Surah An-Nisa 4:23)
حَرُمَ مِنَ النَّسَبِ سَبْعٌ وَمِنَ الصِّهْرِ سَبْعٌ ثُمَّ قَرَأَ هَذِهِ الْآيَةَ {حُرِّمَتْ عَلَيْكُمْ أُمَّهَاتُكُمْ وَبَنَاتُكُمْ وَأَخَوَاتُكُمْ وَعَمَّاتُكُمْ وَخَالَاتُكُمْ وَبَنَاتُ الْأَخِ وَبَنَاتُ الْأُخْتِ} [النساء 23] هَذَا مِنَ النَّسَبِ {وَأُمَّهَاتُكُمُ اللَّاتِي أَرْضَعْنَكُمْ وَأَخَوَاتُكُمْ مِنَ الرَّضَاعَةِ وَأُمَّهَاتُ نِسَائِكُمْ وَرَبَائِبُكُمُ اللَّاتِي فِي حُجُورِكُمْ مِنْ نِسَائِكُمُ اللَّاتِي دَخَلْتُمْ بِهِنَّ فَإِنْ لَمْ تَكُونُوا دَخَلْتُمْ بِهِنَّ فَلَا جُنَاحَ عَلَيْكُمْ وَحَلَائِلُ أَبْنَائِكُمُ الَّذِينَ مِنْ أَصْلَابِكُمْ وَأَنْ تَجْمَعُوا بَيْنَ الْأُخْتَيْنِ إِلَّا مَا قَدْ سَلَفَ وَلَا تَنْكِحُوا مَا نَكَحَ آبَاؤُكُمْ مِنَ النِّسَاءِ}
[Machine] "Seven lineages are prohibited from marrying, and seven are prohibited from marrying into." Al-Dhahabi remained silent about it in his summary.
[Machine] He said, "This verse {And [also prohibited to you are all] married women except those your right hands possess} [Quran 4:24], he said: 'Every married woman who commits adultery, except those taken as captives.'"
[Machine] Abu Nadrah said, so I said, "We do not recite it like that." Then Ibn Abbas said, "By Allah, Allah revealed it like that."
[Machine] And she read this verse, "And those who guard their private parts, except from their spouses or those their right hands possess, for indeed, they are not to be blamed - But whoever seeks beyond that" [Surah Al-Mu'minun 5]. Allah has not made them lawful for him.
[Machine] In Surah An-Nisa, there are five verses that please me, as they grant me the world and everything in it. "Indeed, Allah does not wrong [anyone] even the weight of an atom, and if there is a good deed, He multiplies it and gives from Himself a great reward." (4:40) "If you avoid the major sins which you have been forbidden, We will remove from you your lesser sins and admit you to a noble entrance [into Paradise]." (4:31) "Indeed, Allah does not forgive association with Him, but He forgives what is less than that for whom He wills." (4:48) "And if, when they wronged themselves, they had come to you, [O Muhammad], and asked forgiveness of Allah and the Messenger had asked forgiveness for them, they would have found Allah Accepting of repentance and Merciful." "And whoever does a wrong or wrongs himself but then seeks forgiveness of Allah will find Allah Forgiving and Merciful." (4:110) Abdullah said, "It pleases me that I receive the world and everything in it through these verses." It is an authentic chain, but if Abdullah heard it from his father, then there is some disagreement on that. (Sahih)
[Machine] She said, "O Messenger of Allah, do men go to war while we do not go, fight nor martyr ourselves, although we receive only half of the inheritance? Allah revealed, "And do not wish for that by which Allah has made some of you exceed others. For men is a share of what they have earned, and for women is a share of what they have earned" (Surah An-Nisa 4:32).
"To those also, to whom your right hand was pledged, give your portion." When the Emigrants came to Medina. they inherited from the Helpers without any blood-relationship with them for the brotherhood which the Messenger of Allah ﷺ established between them. When the following verse was revealed: "To (benefit) everyone we have appointed shares and heirs to property left by parent and relatives." it abrogated the verse: "To those also, to whom your right hand was pledged, give their due portion." This alliance was made for help, well wishing and cooperation. Now a legacy can be made for him. (The right to)inheritance was abolished. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 2922)

[Machine] Allah brought forth one of His servants whom He bestowed with wealth, and He asked him, "What have you done in the world?" The servant replied, "I did nothing, O Lord, except that You have provided me with wealth, so I used to engage in business transactions with people. It is part of my nature to be easy on those in debt and to show patience towards those in hardship." Allah, the Almighty, said, "I deserve that more than you. Forgive my servant." Ubay bin 'Amir al-Juhani and Abu Mas'ud al-Ansari reported that they heard this from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and his family.

If the Muslims made a mistake in a secret mission or in a battle, the man would set a slave free as an atonement.
[Machine] The messenger of Allah (pbuh) ordered us to depart to the land of the Negus, so the Quraysh found out about it and they sent Amr ibn al-Aas and Ammarah ibn al-Waleed and they gathered gifts for the Negus. We arrived before them to the Negus and they came to him with gifts, and he accepted them and prostrated to Allah. Then Amr ibn al-Aas told him that there are people among us who have deviated from our religion while they are in your land. The Negus asked, "In my land?" Amr replied, "Yes." The Negus then sent for us, and Ja'far, may Allah be pleased with him, said, "No one among us will speak today, I will be your spokesperson." So we went to the Negus, while he was sitting in his council with Amr ibn al-Aas on his right and Ammarah on his left, and the priests were sitting, wearing white garments. Amr said to him, "They don't prostrate to you." So when we reached the Negus, we exposed those who were with him from the priests and monks, and they prostrated to the king. Ja'far said, "We only prostrate to Allah." The Negus asked, "And what is this?" Ja'far replied, "Indeed, Allah has sent among us His Messenger, who is the one Jesus foretold. He comes after him, and his name is Ahmad. He has commanded us to worship Allah alone, not associating anything with Him, to establish prayer, pay Zakat, and commanded us to do good and forbid evil." The people were amazed by his words. When Amr saw that, he said to the Negus, "May Allah rectify the king, for they differ with you regarding Jesus, the son of Mary." The Negus asked Ja'far, "What does your companion say about Jesus, the son of Mary?" He replied, "He says about him what is stated in the word of Allah, that he is the Spirit from Allah and His word that He sent down to the Virgin Mary, untouched by any man." The Negus picked up a stick from the ground and said, "O priests and monks, does what he says increase upon what you say about Jesus?" They replied, "This does not weigh as much as a goodbye from you. Welcome to you and to those who have come to you from him. I bear witness that he is the messenger of Allah and the one Jesus foretold. If it weren't for the fact that I am in his place of authority, I would go to him, even if that meant I had to crawl to him. Stay in my land as long as you wish, and I will provide you with food and clothing." Then he said, "Give them back their gifts."

The woman and the servant said: "He gives you what He has not given to anyone among the worlds" [Surah Al-Ma'idah, verse 20]. Those, on that day, who are between their hands, said.
[Machine] Regarding Ali, in his saying, Allah says, "Our Lord, show us those who misled us from among the jinn and mankind and we will put them under our feet." Shaytan (Satan) said, and so did the son of Adam who killed his brother.
[Machine] He heard a reader reciting, "O you who have believed, fear Allah and seek the means [of nearness] to Him." (Quran 5:35) He said, "The near ones know that the son of Umm Abd is closest to Allah as a means, according to the criteria of Bukhari and Muslim, among the companions of Muhammad peace be upon him."
[Machine] Two abrogated verses from Surah Al-Ma'idah are: "So judge between them or turn away from them" [5:42], and Allah, Exalted and Majestic, revealed: "And judge between them by what Allah has revealed and do not follow their inclinations." [5:49] "The chain of transmission is authentic (sahih) and they have not withdrawn it."
Warning to those who do not take heed from the stories of the Children of Israel
We were with Ḥudhayfah, and they mentioned the verse, "And whoever does not judge by what Allah has revealed – then it is those who are the disbelievers." [Māʾidah 5:44] Then a man from the people said, "Indeed, this is concerning the Children of Israel." Ḥudhayfah responded ˹sarcastically˺, "What an excellent example are ʿyour˺ brothers in the Children of Israel: that all sweetness is for you and all bitterness is for them? Not at all! By the One in whose hand is my soul, until you follow the Sunnah (their legacy) with the Sunnah (as your legacy), step by step, just as you follow the Qudhah with the Qudhah."
[Machine] "Regarding the nation, those who do not rule by what Allah has revealed, they are the disbelievers." [Al-Ma'idah 44] This is kufr (disbelief) in addition to kufr (disbelief).
[Machine] I heard 'Ayyad al-Ash'ari say, when the verse {So Allah will bring a people whom He loves and who love Him} [Surah Al-Ma'idah, verse 54] was revealed, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "They are your people, O Abu Musa," and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ pointed with his hand towards Abu Musa Al-Ash'ari.
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ was on guard until this verse was revealed, "And Allah protects you from the people." [Hadeeth from Al-Ma'idah 67] So, the Prophet ﷺ removed his head from the dome and said to them, "O people, go away, for Allah has protected me."
