23. Book of Quranic Exegesis (Tafsīr) (21/23)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
We have begun in this book with the descent of the Quran, in what has been narrated in the Musnad concerning the recitations, and the mention of the companions who compiled and memorized the Quran, before the interpretation of the Surahs.
[Machine] "Al-Walid ibn al-Mughira came to the Prophet ﷺ and he recited the Qur'an to him. It affected him deeply and Abu Jahl heard about it and came to him. He said, 'O uncle, your people think about gathering wealth for you.' He asked, 'Why?' Abu Jahl replied, 'So that they can give it to you, as you have come to Muhammad to seek his favor.' He said, 'The Quraysh already know that I am one of the wealthiest among them.' Abu Jahl said, 'Then say something that will alarm your people, that you reject it or that you dislike it.' He replied, 'By Allah, there is not a man among you who knows more poetry than I, nor do I know any man who knows more rhymes or verses than I do. By Allah, there is no similarity to what he says in anything else. By Allah, his words are sweeter, more eloquent, and more fruitful than any other. It humbles what is beneath it and rises above it, and nothing rises above it. It breaks what is beneath it.' Abu Jahl said, 'Your people will not be pleased with you until you say something about it.' He replied, 'Leave me until I think about it.' When he thought about it, he said, 'This is magic that is preferred and surpasses everything else.' So the verse was revealed, 'Leave Me with the one whom I created alone' (Qur'an 74:11)."
[Machine] Narrated by the Prophet ﷺ, "Woe to the [bottom of] a valley in Hell, where the disbeliever falls for forty autumns before reaching its depth. And the ascent is a mountain in the Fire, where one climbs for seventy autumns, and then falls, and it is the same."
[Machine] From Ali in his saying, exalted is He (Allah), "Every soul, for what it has earned, will be held in pledge, except the companions of the right." [Al-Muddaththir 39]. He said, "They are the children of the Muslims."
[Machine] From Abu Musa, regarding His saying - exalted be He - "So they ran away from al-Qaswara" [Al-Muddaththir 51], he said, "Al-Qaswara refers to the men of hunting, the archers."
[Machine] I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ recite, "And you do not will except that Allah wills. Indeed, Allah is ever Knowing and Wise. He admits whom He wills into His mercy."[Quran 2:105] He said, "Your Lord says, 'I am worthy of being feared, that I should have another deity with Me, while I am worthy of being worshipped by those who fear Me, that I should have another deity with them, that I should forgive him.'"
23.75 [Machine] Interpretation of Surah al-Qiyamah
[Machine] "From whom?" I said, "From the Bani Asad tribe," he said. "From their noble lineage or from those whom Allah has blessed?" I said, "From those whom Allah has blessed." He said, "Ask." I said, "I swear by the Day of Resurrection." He said, "Your Lord swears by whatever He wills of His creations." I said, "And I swear by the reproachful soul." He said, "It is the soul that blames itself." I said, "Does man think that We will never assemble his bones? Yes, We are able to put together in perfect order the tips of his fingers." He said, "If He wills, He could make him (man) flat, then backward." I said, "Then it will be [the same for him] a resting place and a depository." He said, "The resting place is in the womb, and the depository is in the backbone."
[Machine] "About Ibn Abbas, it is said: 'Rather, man desires to commit evil openly.' [Surah Al-Qiyamah, verse 5] He says: 'I will repent.' [Surah Al-Qiyamah, verse 6] 'He will ask, "When is the Day of Resurrection?"' [Surah Al-Qiyamah, verse 6] 'Then the vision will become clear to him when it dazzles the sight.' [Surah Al-Qiyamah, verse 7]"
[Machine] On the authority of Abdullah, in his statement, Almighty Allah says: "On the day when some signs of your Lord come, faith will not benefit a soul that did not believe before." (Quran 6:158) He said, "The sunrise from its west." Then he recited this verse: "And the sun and moon are joined, the human being will say on that day: Where is the escape?" (Quran 75:10)
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "The lowest rank of the people of Paradise is for a man who looks at his kingdom for a thousand years, seeing its furthest reaches as he sees its closest parts. He looks at his wives, servants, and palaces. The highest rank of the people of Paradise is for the one who looks at the face of Allah Almighty twice every day." Israel ibn Yunus transmitted from Thawr from Ibn Umar, who said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'The lowest rank of the people of Paradise is for the one who looks at his kingdom for a thousand years, and the highest rank is for the one who looks at the face of Allah Almighty twice every day.' Then he recited: 'Faces that Day will be radiant, looking at their Lord' (Quran 75:22), and 'To their Lord, on that Day, the gazes will be cast' (Quran 75:23). He said, 'They will look at the face of Allah, the Exalted and Glorious, every day.'"
[Machine] I said to Ibn Abbas, "Is it something that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said or something that Allah revealed?" He replied, "It is something that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, and then Allah revealed it."
[Machine] Indeed, when the Prophet ﷺ read the verse "Is not He capable of reviving the dead?" (Qiyamah 40), he said "yes." And when he read the verse "Is not Allah the wisest of judges?" (At-Tin 8), he also said "yes."
23.76 [Machine] Interpretation of Surah Hal Ata 'ala Al-Insan
“I see what you do not see, and I hear what you do not hear. The heaven is creaking and it should creak, for there is no space in it the width of four fingers but there is an angel there, prostrating to Allah. By Allah, if you knew what I know, you would laugh little and weep much, and you would never enjoy women in your beds, and you would go out in the streets, beseeching Allah.’” (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 4190)
[Machine] "They were humbled and they took from it however they wanted."
[Machine] "He mentioned the boats of the people of paradise, and then recited, 'And when you look, then you will see bliss and a great kingdom.' [Surah Al-Insan 20]"
23.77 [Machine] The interpretation of Surah Al-Mursalat
[Machine] From Abu Huraira in regards to His saying, Exalted and Mighty is He, "By the ones sent forth with a known mission" [Al-Mursalat 1], He said, "They are the angels who are sent forth with a known purpose."
[Machine] About this verse, "Indeed, it [the sky] casts [at the devils] sparks [as if they were tawny camels]." [Al-Mursalat 32], he said, "During the period of ignorance, we would make short wooden pieces about the length of two or three arms, and we would raise them in the winter and call them "qasr" (palaces)." He said, "I heard from Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) and was asked about the verse, "Yellow spears." [Al-Mursalat 33], he said, "The ropes of ships are tied together until they become like the middles of the sails."
23.78 [Machine] Explanation of Surah Al-'Amma (Why do they ask?)
[Machine] To create creation, Allah sent the wind which swept away the water until it disappeared from the surface of the land, including the area beneath the Kaaba. Then Allah extended the earth until it reached the desired length and width. Ibn Abbas showed me with his hand that it extended like this and like that. He said, "Allah made the mountains as stabilizers and pillars." Abu Qubays was one of the first mountains placed on the earth.
[Machine] I heard Al-Abbas say, "Give us the water and quench our thirst."
[Machine] Sufyan asked, "How is the hadith (narration) that you told me about Umm Salih?" He replied, "Umm Salih narrated to me from Safiyyah bint Shaybah, who narrated from Umm Habibah, who said, 'The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "The speech of the son of Adam is only good (ordered by) with righteousness, or forbidding evil, or mentioning Allah."'" Muhammad ibn Yazid said, "I have never heard a more strict (severe) hadith than this." Sufyan replied, "And what is the severity of this hadith? It was only transmitted by one woman from another woman. This is in the Book of Allah, the Almighty, which your Prophet ﷺ was sent with." Then he recited, "On the Day when the Spirit and the angels stand in rows, they will not speak except for one whom the Most Merciful permits, and he will speak the truth" [An-Naba' 38], and said, "And He said, 'By time, indeed, mankind is in loss, except for those who have believed and done righteous deeds and advised each other to truth and advised each other to patience'" [Al-'Asr 1-3], and he also said, "There is no good in much of their private conversation except for those who enjoin charity or that which is right or conciliation between people" [An-Nisa' 114]. Adh-Dhahabi did not mention this hadith in his summary.

23.79 [Machine] The interpretation of Surah An-Naziat
[Machine] "Al-Mawt" is valid according to the condition of the two sheikhs (Al-Bukhari and Muslim), but it does not meet the condition of Al-Bukhari and Muslim.
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ, when a quarter of the night had passed, used to say, "O people, remember Allah's favor on you. O people, remember that the shaking (of the Hour) will come after which comes calmness. Then the second shaking comes after which comes calmness. Then a third shaking will come and it will be followed by a calamity whose magnitude is beyond description. Then the Hour will be established with its signs." Ubayy bin Ka'b said, "O Messenger of Allah, I invoke salutations upon you frequently. How much of my supplication should I devote to you?" He said, "As you like."
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ used to be asked about the Hour (i.e., the Day of Judgment) until the following verse was revealed to him: "They ask you, [O Muhammad], about the Hour: when is its arrival? In what [position] are you that you should mention it? To your Lord is its finality" [An-Nazi'at 43]. He ﷺ responded, "It has no knowledge, except with God."

“He frowned and turned away” was revealed about Ibn Umm Maktum the blind man. He came to the Messenger of Allah saying: ‘O Messenger of Allah! Guide me.’ At that time, there was a revered man from the idolaters with the Messenger of Allah. So the Messenger of Allah turned away from him and faced the other man, saying: ‘Do you think that there is something wrong with what I am saying?’ He said: ‘No.’ So it was about that that it was revealed.” (Using translation from Tirmidhī 3331)

[Machine] From Sawdah, the wife of the Prophet ﷺ, she said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "People will be resurrected barefoot, naked, and uncircumcised, afflicted by sweat and their perspiration reaching the level of their ears." Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ recited the verse, "On the Day a man will flee from his brother, and his mother and his father, and his wife and his children. He said, "The witness is the Day of Arafah and the Day of Jumu'ah, and the witnessed is the promised Day of Resurrection." This is a hadith narrated by Shu'bah from Yunus ibn 'Ubaid, considered authentic according to the conditions of the two sheikhs (Al-Bukhari and Muslim) but they did not include it in their collections.

[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ used to recite in Witr prayer, in the first Rak'ah, "Glorify the name of your Lord, the Most High." In the second Rak'ah, he would recite "Say: O disbelievers." In the third Rak'ah, he would recite "Say: He is Allah, the One" and "Say: I seek refuge in the Lord of the daybreak." Lastly, he would recite "Say: I seek refuge in the Lord of mankind."

Sa'id ibn Kathir ibn 'Ufair, who is a narrating authority among the people of Egypt, mentioned this Hadith and narration. I requested it at the time when I was writing a book about Witr prayer, but I did not find it. Later, I found it after Adh-Dhahabi stopped commenting on it in his summary.
