23. Book of Quranic Exegesis (Tafsīr) (22/23)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
We have begun in this book with the descent of the Quran, in what has been narrated in the Musnad concerning the recitations, and the mention of the companions who compiled and memorized the Quran, before the interpretation of the Surahs.
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to perform two units of prayer, followed by Witr prayer wherein he would recite after them "Exalt the name of your Lord, the Most High" and "Say: O disbelievers!" And in Witr prayer, he would recite "Say: He is Allah, the One" and "Say: I seek refuge in the Lord of the daybreak" and "Say: I seek refuge in the Lord of mankind."
[Machine] He used to say, when he recited, "Exalt the name of your Lord, the Most High" [Al-A'la 1], he said, "Glory be to my Lord, the Most High, who created and proportioned." He said, and this is the recitation of Ubayy ibn Ka'b.
[Machine] Saad, indeed the Quran did not come down upon Musayyib nor upon the family of Musayyib. Allah Almighty said, "We will make you recite, so you shall not forget" [Al-Quran, 87:6]. And He said, "And remember your Lord when you forget" [Surah Al-Kahf, 18:24].
23.88 [Machine] Interpretation of Surah Al-Ghashiyah
[Machine] "So he approached him, and Umar looked at him and began to cry. He was asked, 'O commander of the believers, what makes you cry for this?' He replied, 'I remembered the saying of Allah Almighty in His book, "A deed that will keep on benefiting others long after the doer has passed away, it will water a blazing fire, fed from a boiling spring." (Surah Al-Ghashiyah, 4). That is what made me cry.' 'This is a story in its own time, for Abu Imran Al-Jawni did not live long enough to witness the time of Umar.'"
“I have been commanded to fight the people until they say: La ilaha illallah. If they say: La ilaha illallah, then their blood and wealth are protected from me, except for a right that is due from it, and their reckoning will be with Allah.” (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 3928)
23.89 [Machine] The Interpretation of Surah Al-Fajr
[Machine] "The dawn of the daylight" {And ten nights} [Al-Fajr 2] He said, "The ten of sacrifice."
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ was asked about "Ash-Shafi' and Al-Witr" [Al-Fajr 3], he said, "They are both parts of the prayer."
[Machine] "And Pharaoh commanded his wife to be tied to four stakes, then he placed a massive millstone on her back until she died."
[Machine] "Indeed, your Lord is in observation" [Al-Fajr 14]. The passing of the path has three bridges: a bridge on which is trustworthiness, a bridge on which is mercy, and a bridge on which is the mighty and majestic Lord."
23.90 [Machine] Translation: Interpretation of Surah Al-Balad
[Machine] "It means by the parent Adam and what he gave birth to his offspring."
[Machine] "In the intensity of his creation, in his birth, the growth of his teeth, his complexion, his sustenance, and his circumcision."
[Machine] From Abdullah (and We guided him to the two paths) [Al-Balad 10], he said, "Good and evil."
[Machine] The translation of the given Arabic text is: "According to the saying of Allah, Exalted and Majestic, 'Or the feeding on a day of severe hunger' [Al-Balad 14]. Muhammad ibn al-Munkadir narrated from Jabir ibn Abdullah who said that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Feeding a hungry Muslim is one of the causes of forgiveness.'"
23.91 [Machine] Interpretation of Surah Ash-Shams and its Brightness
[Machine] "The light of it" (And the moon when it follows it) [The Sun 2] "It follows it" (And the daylight when it illuminates it) [The Sun 3] He said, "He lit it" (And the sky and He built it) [The Sun 5] He said, "Allah built the sky" (And the earth and what He spread) [The Sun 6] He said, "He spread it" He said, (And the soul and what He proportioned for it. Then He inspired it to its wickedness and righteousness) [The Sun 8] He said, "He knew its misery and happiness" (Indeed, successful is he who purifies it, and indeed, failed is he who corrupts it) [The Sun 9] He said, "He misled it"
23.92 [Machine] Interpretation of Surah Al-Layl - When the Night Covers
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "There are six whom Allah has cursed, and all the prophets have cursed them. They are: the one who adds something to the Book of Allah, the one who denies the divine decree, the one who oppresses with authority to humiliate those whom Allah has honored and to honor those whom Allah has humiliated, the one who abandons my Sunnah, the one who permits what Allah has forbidden, and the one who forbids what Allah has permitted." Sufyan said, "Recite Surah Al-Layl when it falls: 'As for him who gives and fears on Allah, and believes in the best [reward], We will ease him toward ease. But as for him who withholds and considers himself free of need and denies the best [reward], We will ease him toward difficulty'" [Quran 92:5-10]. Abu Ali reported it with a sound chain of narrators that I fear I have mentioned it before. Adh-Dhahabi remained silent about summarizing it in this context.
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah, may peace be upon him, said: "There are six people whom Allah has cursed, and every prophet is heard (in their supplication). They are: the one who adds to the Book of Allah, the one who denies the decree of Allah, the one who oppresses with tyranny to humiliate those whom Allah has honored and to honor those whom Allah has humiliated, the one who permits what Allah has forbidden, the one who permits what is forbidden of my family, and the one who abandons my Sunnah." Imam Bukhari has cited the arguments of Ishaq bin Muhammad al-Farwi and Abdul Rahman bin Abi al-Rijal in his book Sahih, and this is more correct than the first chain of narration.
[Machine] Abu Quhafa, to Abu Bakr, I see that you are freeing weak slaves. If only you had freed strong men who would defend and support you! Abu Bakr replied, "Oh father, I only desire what I desire because these verses were revealed about it: '[He] who gives [from] his wealth to purify himself. And not [giving] for anyone who has [done him] a favor to be rewarded. But only seeking the countenance of his Lord, Most High. And he is going to be satisfied.'" [Al-Layl 6] until His saying, the Exalted: "And there is not for any person any blessing from his Lord but that it is accounted for him. But [even so], you will not be satisfied." [Al-Layl 19].
23.93 [Machine] The Interpretation of Surah Wadduha
[Machine] "I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ being shown what would be given to his ummah after him, so he was pleased with that. Allah, the Exalted, then revealed: 'By the morning brightness and by the night when it covers with darkness...' until His saying: 'And your Lord will give you, and you will be satisfied' (Quran 93:1-5). The Prophet ﷺ said, 'So Allah gave him a thousand palaces in Jannah (Paradise), made of pearl with dust of musk, and in each palace, there is what is suitable for him.'"
that the Prophet ﷺ said, "I asked Allah a question that I would have liked that I had not asked Him. I mentioned the Prophets of my Lord and I said: O my Lord, You subdued the wind for Sulaymān (Solmon), and You spoke to Mūsá (Moses). Then Allah ﷻ said, 'Did I not find you an orphan and I gave you refuge? And lost and I guided you? And poor and made you self-sufficient?'" He said: "I said: Yes. I would have liked that I had not asked."
[Machine] "When the revelation came down: 'Perish the hands of Abu Lahab (an enemy of Islam), and perish he! His wealth will avail him not, nor his gains. He will be in a flaming fire, and his wife, the wood-carrier, will have upon her neck a rope of twisted palm fiber.' (Surah Al-Masad, 111:1-5)
A rope of twisted palm fiber, he said. It was said to the wife of Abu Lahab, 'Indeed, Muhammad has insulted you.' So she went to the Messenger of Allah while he was sitting with a group of people, and she asked, 'O Muhammad, for what reason do you insult me?' He replied, 'I swear by Allah, I have not insulted you except that Allah has insulted you.' She then asked, 'Have you seen me carrying firewood, or have you seen a rope of twisted palm fiber around my neck?' Then she left. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ did not receive any revelation for several days, until she came to him and said, 'O Muhammad, I do not see your companion (referring to the angel Gabriel) anymore. He must have abandoned you.' Then Allah revealed: 'By the forenoon, and by the night when it covers with darkness' (Surah Ad-Duha, 93:1). Your Lord has neither forsaken you nor hates you."

[Machine] "When the chapter (Surah) of Tabat Yada Abi Lahab was revealed, the narration was mentioned in the same exact way, letter by letter. And the saying of Allah Almighty: 'And as for the favor of your Lord, then talk about it' (Ad-Duha 11), I did not find in it a letter attributed to it and no saying from the companions. So, I mentioned in it two letters from the followers. Al-Hakim said: Its chain of narration is authentic, except that I found a flaw in it."

[Machine] "O young people, take advantage of every night that passes by! For I recite a thousand verses in it. I recite Surah Al-Baqarah in one prayer unit (rak'ah). I fast the sacred months and three days of each month, as well as on Mondays and Thursdays. Then I recite, 'And as for the favor of your Lord, speak about it' [Surah Ad-Duha, verse 11]. Al-Dhahabi did not include it in the summary."

23.94 [Machine] Interpretation of Surah Alam Nashrah
[Machine] That the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was visited by Gabriel while he was playing with some children. Gabriel held him and pressed him until he was short of breath and then removed a clot from his heart, saying, "This is the share of Satan from you." He then washed it in a golden basin with Zamzam water and put it back in its place. Anas said, "Then the boys came running to their mother meaning his heart, and they said, 'Verily Muhammad has been murdered.' His heart approached them while he was turning pale." Anas said, "We could see the marks of stitches on his chest." The narration has been reported as authentic with a correct chain of narration, and it has also been narrated by Umar ibn Al-Khattab and Ali ibn Abi Talib, 'Nothing can overcome two easiness.'"

[Machine] "The Quran was revealed in one complete sentence on the night of Al-Qadr to the sky of this world, which was in the position of the stars. Allah would reveal it to His Messenger ﷺ bit by bit. Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, said: 'And those who disbelieved say, "Why was the Qur'an not revealed to him all at once?" Thus [it is] that We may strengthen thereby your heart. And We have spaced it distinctly.' [Surah Al-Furqan: 32]."
[Machine] The Quran descended in its entirety from the highest heavens to the lower heavens in one night. Then it was revealed gradually over the years. He (Prophet Muhammad) said, and recited this verse: "So I swear by the positions of the stars - and indeed, that is a great oath, if you only knew." [Surah Al-Waqi'ah 76]
[Machine] I heard the Messenger of Allah (pbuh) mentioning the night of Al-Qadr. So, I asked, "O Messenger of Allah, tell me about the night of Al-Qadr. Is it in Ramadan or outside of Ramadan?" He replied, "Indeed, it is in Ramadan." I then asked, "O Messenger of Allah, is it among the nights of the prophets, during which they were elevated? Or is it until the Day of Resurrection?" He said, "No, it is until the Day of Resurrection." I asked, "O Messenger of Allah, tell me in which ten nights of Ramadan it is." He became extremely angry with me, more than he had ever been before or after. He said, "If Allah willed, He would have made it known to you. Seek it in the last ten nights of Ramadan. Do not ask me about anything after that." I then said, "I swear to you by my right upon you, O Messenger of Allah, in which ten nights is it?" He became very angry with me, angrier than he had ever been before or after. He said, "If Allah willed, He would have informed you. Seek it in the last seven nights of Ramadan. Do not ask me about anything after that."

A man came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said: Teach me to read the Qur'an, Messenger of Allah. He said: Read three surahs which begin with A.L.R. He said: My age is advanced, my mind has become dull (i.e. memory has grown weak), and my tongue has grown heavy). So he said: Then read three surahs which begin with H.M. He repeated the same words. So he said: Read three surahs which begin with the "Glorification of Allah". But he repeated the same excuse. The man then said: Teach me a comprehensive surah, Messenger of Allah. The Prophet ﷺ taught him Surah (99). "When the Earth is shaken with her earthquake". When he finished it, the man said: By Him Who sent you with truth, I shall never add anything to it. Then man then went away. The Prophet ﷺ said twice: The man received salvation. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 1399)
