A man from the Companions of the Prophet ﷺ passed by ravine containing a small spring of thirst quenching water, so he was amazed by how pleasant it was. So he said: 'I should leave the people and stay in this ravine. But I will not do it until I seek permission from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.' So he mentioned that to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and he said: 'Do not do so. For indeed one of you standing in the cause of Allah is more virtuous that his Salat in his house for seventy years. Do you not love that Allah forgive your sins and admit you into Paradise ? Then fight in the cause of Allah, for whoever fights in Allah's cause for the time it takes for two milkings of a camel, then Paradise is obligatory for him.'" (Using translation from Tirmidhī 1650)
[Machine] That the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "The position of a man in the row (of warriors) in the cause of Allah is better than the worship of a man for sixty years."
[Machine] Uthman ibn Affan said in the mosque of Khayf: "O people, I heard a narration from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ which I used to conceal from you out of concern for you. But now it has become clear to me that I should advise you with it. I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying: 'The day of striving in the cause of Allah is equal to a thousand days in other than it. So let each one of you look to himself.'"
A man said: Messenger of Allah, allow tourism for me. The Prophet ﷺ said: The tourism of my people is striving in the path of Allah, the Exalted. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 2486)
[Machine] A man came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and asked for permission to commit adultery. Those close to the Prophet ﷺ understood what he meant and said to leave him alone. Then the Prophet ﷺ asked him, "Would you like it to be done to your sister?" He said no. The Prophet ﷺ then asked, "Would you like it to be done to your daughter?" Again, he said no. He kept saying no to every thing the Prophet ﷺ asked. Then the Prophet ﷺ said to him, "Hate what Allah hates, and love for your brother what you love for yourself." The man said, "O Messenger of Allah, pray to Allah to make me dislike women." The Prophet ﷺ said, "O Allah, make him dislike women." The man left and came back after a few nights and said, "O Messenger of Allah, there is nothing I hate more than women. Permit me to go for travel." The Prophet ﷺ said, "Indeed, the travel of my nation is in the way of Allah."
"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'The dust in the cause of Allah and the smoke of Hell will never be combined in the lungs of a slave, and the stinginess and faith can never be combined in a slave's heart." (Using translation from Nasāʾī 3110)
58.152 [Machine] The Virtue of the One Who Throws an Arrow in the Way of Allah
[Machine] I witnessed with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ the palace of Ta'if, and I heard the Prophet of Allah ﷺ say, "Whoever throws an arrow and it reaches its target, he will have a degree in Paradise." A man said, "O Prophet of Allah, if I throw an arrow and it reaches its target, will I have a degree in Paradise?" He said, "Yes." So he threw the arrow and it reached its target. He said, "On that day, I threw sixteen arrows." And I heard the Prophet of Allah ﷺ say, "Whoever turns gray in the way of Allah, they will have light on the Day of Resurrection. And whoever throws an arrow, they will have light on the Day of Resurrection. And any man who emancipates a Muslim slave, then Allah will make every bone from his bones safe from the Fire. And any Muslim woman who emancipates a Muslim woman, then Allah will make every bone from her bones a bone of her emancipated from the Fire." It was also narrated by Asad ibn Wada'ah from Abi Najeeh Amr ibn Abasah.
“I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: ‘Whoever shoots an arrow at the enemy and his arrow reaches the enemy, whether it hits him or not, that is equivalent to him freeing a slave.’” (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 2812)
[Machine] I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, "Whoever goes gray in Islam will have a light on the Day of Judgment, and whoever throws an arrow in the cause of Allah is like freeing a slave."
[Machine] "I heard Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqas saying: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Al-Hasan ibn 'Arfatah, meaning he shook his garment on the day of Uhud and said, "May my mother and father be sacrificed for you."'
[Machine] I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, "I never saw my parents together except for Sa'd, for he said, 'May my father and mother be sacrificed for you.'"
[Machine] Abu Talhah used to accompany the Messenger of Allah ﷺ with one shield. Abu Talhah was skilled at throwing and whenever he threw, the Prophet ﷺ would look at the direction of his nobility.
58.153 [Machine] The virtue of walking in the path of Allah
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "The feet of a servant will not grow weary in the path of Allah, but the Fire will touch them forever; yet their pronunciation is the same."
[Machine] I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying: "Whoever wears out his feet in the cause of Allah, Allah will make them forbidden to the Fire for him. Fix my riding animal for me and make me independent of my people." So the people started to give up riding animals and I have not seen more people on foot than on that day.
58.154 [Machine] The Virtue of Martyrdom in the Path of Allah.
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "I do not find anyone entering Paradise and wishing to come out of it, except for the martyr. He has everything on Earth except martyrdom. He wishes to return and be killed ten times due to the honor and blessings he witnesses in martyrdom. This is from the hadith of Al-'Iqaddi in the narration of At-Tayalisi: There is no servant who has anything better in the sight of Allah, and he wishes to return to the worldly life, except for the martyr. He wishes that he could return and be killed ten times due to what he sees of the excellence of martyrdom."
[Machine] About this, their souls are like green birds, with hanging lanterns in the Throne, roaming wherever they want, then they return to their lanterns. While they are in this state, their Lord looks at them and asks, "What do you desire?" They reply, "We do not desire anything, for we are in Paradise, roaming wherever we please." When they realize that they have to ask for something, they say, "Our souls should be returned to our bodies, so that we may fight in the cause of Allah and be killed again." When He sees that they do not ask for anything else, He leaves them to their statement. This is mentioned in the narration of Abu Abdullah and in the narration of Al-Muqri. We asked Abdullah bin Mas'ud about the meaning of this verse, "And never think of those who have been killed in the cause of Allah as dead. Rather, they are alive with their Lord, receiving provision, rejoicing." (Quran, 3:169) He said, "Indeed, we have asked about that, then its meaning was mentioned to us."
The Prophet ﷺ said: When your brethren were smitten at the battle of Uhud, Allah put their spirits in the crops of green birds which go down to the rivers of Paradise, eat its fruit and nestle in lamps of gold in the shade of the Throne. Then when they experienced the sweetness of their food, drink and rest, they asked: Who will tell our brethren about us that we are alive in Paradise provided with provision, in order that they might not be disinterested in jihad and recoil in war? Allah Most High said: I shall tell them about you; so Allah sent down; "And do not consider those who have been killed in Allah's path." till the end of the verse. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 2520)
[Machine] I said, "O Messenger of Allah, who is in Paradise?" The Prophet replied, "In Paradise are the martyr, the newborn child, and the bereaved one."
[Machine] That the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Indeed, the first thing to be spilled from the blood of a martyr is the forgiveness of his sins.
[Machine] That the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "The martyrs are three: a believer who goes out with his life and wealth and fights until he is killed. He is considered the one who is tested in the tent of Allah under His Throne, and he is not surpassed by the Prophets except by the degree of Prophethood. And a believer who strives against himself with sins and transgressions, and fights until he is killed. That is a purified one beneath his sins and transgressions. Indeed, the sword wipes away sins." And it was said to him, "Enter from whichever gates of Paradise you wish, for it has eight gates, and Hell has seven gates, some of which are better than others, meaning the gates of Paradise." And a hypocrite who goes out with his life and wealth and fights until he is killed, he is in the fire. Indeed, the sword does not wipe out hypocrisy.
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Our Lord wonders at two men: a man who leaves his house and everything he loves and cares about, just to go to prayer, seeking what is with Me, and fearing what is with Me; and a man who fights in the cause of Allah, but is defeated and knows the consequences of defeat and what awaits him if he retreats, yet he returns until his blood is shed. So Allah says to His angels: 'Look at My servant who has returned, seeking what is with Me and fearing what is with Me, until his blood is spilled.' And it is narrated in its meaning from Abu Darda as a hadith."
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "The martyr does not feel the pain of being killed, except as one of you feels the pain of a bite."

58.159 [Machine] The virtue of those who die in the path of Allah
Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to visit Umm Haram bint Milhan, who would offer him meals. Umm Haram was the wife of Ubada bin As-Samit. Messenger of Allah ﷺ, once visited her and she provided him with food and started looking for lice in his head. Then Messenger of Allah ﷺ slept, and afterwards woke up smiling. Umm Haram asked, "What causes you to smile, O Messenger of Allah ﷺ?" He said. "Some of my followers who (in a dream) were presented before me as fighters in Allah's cause (on board a ship) amidst this sea caused me to smile; they were as kings on the thrones (or like kings on the thrones)." (Ishaq, a sub-narrator is not sure as to which expression the Prophet ﷺ used.) Umm Haram said, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! Invoke Allah that he makes me one of them. Messenger of Allah ﷺ invoked Allah for her and slept again and woke up smiling. Once again Umm Haram asked, "What makes you smile, O Messenger of Allah ﷺ?" He replied, "Some of my followers were presented to me as fighters in Allah's Cause," repeating the same dream. Umm Haram said, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! Invoke Allah that He makes me one of them." He said, "You are amongst the first ones." It happened that she sailed on the sea during the Caliphate of Mu'awiya bin Abi Sufyan, and after she disembarked, she fell down from her riding animal and died. (Using translation from Bukhārī 2788)

So I said, 'Pray to Allah to make me one of them.' He said, 'You are among the first.' So Ubada bin As-Samit married her and he took her in a campaign at sea. When they returned, a female camel was brought close to her for her to ride, but she killed it and broke its neck, and it died."

And whoever dies in his bed until his nose bleeds, it is a statement that I have not heard from anyone among the Arabs before the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , meaning that he died in his bed, his reward is upon Allah. And whoever is killed unjustly, he will enter Paradise."

He then put on his coat of mail and rode his horse; he then proceeded towards them. When the Muslims saw him, they said: Keep away, Amir. He said: I have become a believer. He fought until he was wounded. He was then taken to his family wounded. Sa'd ibn Mu'adh came to his sister: Ask him (whether he fought) out of partisanship, out of anger for them, or out of anger for Allah. He said: Out of anger of Allah and His Apostle.
[Machine] On the authority of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , he said, "There are two types of warriors. As for those who strive for the sake of Allah and obey their leader, spend generously, cooperate with their brethren, and refrain from corruption, then indeed, their sleep and awakening will be rewarded in full. As for those who engage in combat seeking honor, fame, and reputation, disobey their leader, and spread corruption in the land, they will not return with even a sufficient amount." This hadith is narrated by Al-Hadrami and in another narration by Muhammad ibn Wahb. Abu Hurairah narrated the ending and said, "If one disobeys the leader and does not spend generously, he will not return with sufficiency."

Messenger of Allah, tell me about jihad and fighting. He replied: Abdullah ibn Amr, if you fight with endurance seeking from Allah your reward, Allah will resurrect you showing endurance and seeking your reward from Him, but, if you fight for vain show seeking to acquire much, Allah will resurrect you making a vain show and seeking to acquire much. In whatever you fight or are killed, Abdullah ibn Amr, in that state Allah will resurrect you. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 2519)

People dispersed from around Abu Huraira, and Natil, who was from the Syrians. said to him: O Shaikh, relate (to us) a tradition you have heard from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He said: Yes. I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: The first of men (whose case) will be decided on the Day of Judgment will be a man who died as a martyr. He shall be brought (before the Judgment Seat). Allah will make him recount His blessings (i. e. the blessings which He had bestowed upon him) and he will recount them (and admit having enjoyed them in his life). (Then) will Allah say: What did you do (to requite these blessings)? He will say: I fought for Thee until I died as a martyr. Allah will say: You have told a lie. You fought that you might be called a" brave warrior". And you were called so. (Then) orders will be passed against him and he will be dragged with his face downward and cast into Hell. Then will be brought forward a man who acquired knowledge and imparted it (to others) and recited the Qur'an. He will be brought And Allah will make him recount His blessings and he will recount them (and admit having enjoyed them in his lifetime). Then will Allah ask: What did you do (to requite these blessings)? He will say: I acquired knowledge and disseminated it and recited the Qur'an seeking Thy pleasure. Allah will say: You have told a lie. You acquired knowledge so that you might be called" a scholar," and you recited the Qur'an so that it might be said:" He is a Qari" and such has been said. Then orders will be passed against him and he shall be dragged with his face downward and cast into the Fire. Then will be brought a man whom Allah had made abundantly rich and had granted every kind of wealth. He will be brought and Allah will make him recount His blessings and he will recount them and (admit having enjoyed them in his lifetime). Allah will (then) ask: What have you done (to requite these blessings)? He will say: I spent money in every cause in which Thou wished that it should be spent. Allah will say: You are lying. You did (so) that it might be said about (You):" He is a generous fellow" and so it was said. Then will Allah pass orders and he will be dragged with his face downward and thrown into Hell. [Machine] "And another saying that you say to those who were killed in your battles: 'So and so was killed as a martyr, and so and so died as a martyr.' And perhaps he had only embraced something insignificant like a piece of gold or a piece of paper, seeking worldly gains or engaging in trade. So do not say that, but say what the Prophet ﷺ said: 'Whoever is killed in the cause of Allah, or dies, then they are in Paradise.'"

[Machine] O Messenger of Allah, there is a man who wants to engage in jihad for the sake of Allah, seeking worldly gains. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "He will not have any reward." The man asked again and again, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "He will not have any reward." This statement is from the hadith of Ibn Shaqiq. The sheikh said, "These reports and similar ones may apply to those who intend to engage in battle only for worldly gains and for the material benefits it brings. As for those who seek reward and hope to obtain spoils of war, they will not have any reward."

[Machine] Abdullah bin Hawala, the companion of the Prophet ﷺ, came to me and it reached us that he obligated himself to pay two hundred (dirhams), but he refused to pay more than one hundred. I said to him, "Is it true that it reached us that you obligated yourself to pay two hundred and you refuse to pay more than one hundred?" By Allah, nothing stopped him from paying it, and he was able to say that he has no responsibility. Doesn't it suffice for Ibn Hawala to pay one hundred every year? Then he started telling us about the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent us on foot around Medina to gain spoils, but we arrived without gaining anything. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saw our effort, he said, 'O Allah, do not entrust them to me, so I will be lenient with them. Do not entrust them to people, so they will treat them lightly and oppress them. Do not entrust them to themselves, so they will be unable to fulfill it. Rather, unite them with their provisions.' Then he said, 'The Sham will be opened for you, and the treasures of Persia and Rome will be divided among you. And each one of you will have a certain amount of wealth, until one of you will be given a hundred dinars and he will become displeased and will put his hand on my head and say, 'O Ibn Hawala, if you see the Khilafah being established on the Holy Land, then earthquakes, blasts, and great matters have come, and the Hour is closer to people than my hand is to your head."

Were it not for some men amongst the believers who dislike to be left behind me and whom I cannot provide with means of conveyance, I would certainly never remain behind any Sariya' (army-unit) setting out in Allah's Cause. By Him in Whose Hands my life is! I would love to be martyred in Allah's Cause and then get resurrected and then get martyred, and then get resurrected again and then get martyred and then get resurrected again and then get martyred.
