[Machine] "The Prophet ﷺ said, 'Do not wish to encounter the enemy, but if you meet them, bear patience.'"
(the freed slave of 'Umar bin 'Ubaidullah) I was Umar's clerk. Once Abdullah bin Abi Aufa wrote a letter to 'Umar when he proceeded to Al-Haruriya. I read in it that Messenger of Allah ﷺ in one of his military expeditions against the enemy, waited till the sun declined and then he got up amongst the people saying, "O people! Do not wish to meet the enemy, and ask Allah for safety, but when you face the enemy, be patient, and remember that Paradise is under the shades of swords." Then he said, "O Allah, the Revealer of the Holy Book, and the Mover of the clouds and the Defeater of the clans, defeat them, and grant us victory over them." (Using translation from Bukhārī 3024)
When the Prophet ﷺ feared a (group of) people, he would say: "O Allah, we make Thee our shield against them, and take refuge in Thee from their evils." (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 1537)
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to move his lips with something that could not be understood, so we said, "O Messenger of Allah, you move your lips with something that cannot be understood." He said, "One of the prophets was amazed by the abundance of his people, so he said, 'Who will provide for these people or stand up for them?' It was said to him, 'Choose between your companions that we inflict upon them an enemy who would kill them, or famine, or death.' So he gave them the choice and they chose death. Some of them died within three days, seventy thousand in total. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'And I say, O Allah, with You I fight, with You I strive, and with You I undertake, and there is no power or strength except with You, and all the supplications that have been mentioned before in this are mentioned in the Book of Hajj and the Book of Invocations.'"
