23. Book of Quranic Exegesis (Tafsīr) (9/23)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
We have begun in this book with the descent of the Quran, in what has been narrated in the Musnad concerning the recitations, and the mention of the companions who compiled and memorized the Quran, before the interpretation of the Surahs.
Ibn ‘Abbas ؓ said to us. I said to ‘Uthman bin ʿAffan: What made you take al-Anfal, which is one of al-Mathani (the seven long soorahs), and Baraʿah, which is one of al-Miʿeen (soorahs with one hundred verses or thereabouts), and put them next to one another and not write - Ibn Jaʿfar said: A line between them saying Bismillahir-Rahmanir-Raheem - and you put them with the seven long ones? What made you do that? ʿUthman ؓ said: Sometimes many soorahs would be revealed (incomplete) to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , and when something was revealed he would call one of the scribes to write it down for him and say: “Put this in the Soorah in which such and such is mentionedʿ; and verses would be revealed to him and he would say, ʿPut these verses in the soorah in which such and such is mentioned”; and a verse would be revealed to him and he would say: ʿPut this verse in the soorah in which such and such is mentioned.” Al-Anfal was one of the first soorahs to be revealed in Madinah and Baraʿah was one of the last soorahs of the Qurʿan, and the stories and content of the two soorahs were similar. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed away without having stated clearly to us that it was part of it, but we thought that it was, hence I put them together and I did not put between them the line Bismillahir-Rahmanir-Raheem. Ibn Jaʿfar said: I put it with the seven long ones. (Using translation from Aḥmad 399)
[Machine] Because "In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful" is a verse of security and innocence which was revealed during warfare, and there is no security in it.
[Machine] "What you recite of it means innocence, and indeed you call it Surah of Repentance while it is Surah of Punishment."
[Machine] I was among those whom the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent with Ali to Makkah, so his son or another man asked him, "Why were you calling?" He said, "We used to say, 'None will enter Paradise except a believer, and no one will perform Hajj after the year except a polytheist, and no one will circumambulate the Kaaba while naked. And whoever had a covenant with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, his lifespan is four months, so I kept calling until my voice became hoarse."
“What day is this?” They said: “The day of sacrifice.” He said: “What land is this?” They said: “This is the sacred land of Allah.” He said: “What month is this?” They said: “The sacred month of Allah.” He said: “This is the day of the greatest Hajj, and your blood, your wealth and your honor are sacred to you, as sacred as this land, in this month, on this day.” Then he said: “Have I conveyed (the message)?” They said: “Yes.” Then the Prophet ﷺ started to say: “O Allah, bear witness.” Then he bade farewell to the people, and they said: “This is the Farewell Pilgrimage.” (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 3058)
[Machine] From the Messenger of Allah ﷺ: "Whoever leaves this world with sincerity to Allah alone, with no partner for Him, and establishes the prayer and gives the zakat, then Allah will be pleased with them. This is the religion of Allah that the messengers brought and conveyed from their Lord before the overwhelming abundance of traditions and the differences of desires. The confirmation of this is found in the Book of Allah, where He says, 'So if they repent, establish prayer, and give zakat, then they are your brothers in religion' (9:11)."
[Machine] From Hudhaifah regarding the saying of Allah Almighty, "So fight against the leaders of disbelief, for indeed, there are no oaths [sacred] to them." (Quran 9:12) Hudhaifah said, "They were not fought after [this verse was revealed]."
[Machine] "Abu Jahl ibn Hisham, Umayyah ibn Khalaf, Utbah ibn Rabia, Abu Sufyan ibn Harb, and Suhayl ibn Amr were the ones who broke the covenant with Allah and plotted to expel the Messenger from Mecca."
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "When you see a man regularly attending the mosque, do not hesitate to testify that he is a believer, for Allah says: 'Only those who believe in Allah frequent His mosques'." [Quran 9:18]
When this verse was revealed: "And those who hoard gold and silver," the Muslims were grieved about it. Umar said: I shall dispel your care. He, therefore, went and said: Prophet of Allah, your Companions were grieved by this verse. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Allah has made zakat obligatory simply to purify your remaining property, and He made inheritances obligatory that they might come to those who survive you. Umar then said: Allah is most great. He then said to him: Let me inform you about the best a man hoards; it is a virtuous woman who pleases him when he looks at her, obeys him when he gives her a command, and guards his interests when he is away from her. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 1664)
[Machine] "The prophecy has come upon us, meaning Surah Al-Tawbah. Allah, Exalted and Mighty, said, 'March forth, whether you are light or heavy.' [Surah Al-Tawbah: 41]. And I find myself to be nothing but light."
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was asked about the mosque that was established on piety, and he said, "It is my mosque, this one."
[Machine] He said, "The mosque that was founded upon righteousness is the mosque of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ." It is authentic.
[Machine] Two men were discussing in the mosque that was founded on piety. One of them said it is the mosque of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , and the other said it is the mosque of Quba. They both went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and asked him about it. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "The mosque that was founded on piety is my mosque, this is it."
"Abu Ayyub Al-Ansari, Jabir bin 'Abdullah, and Anas bin Malik told me that when this Verse: "In it (the mosque) are men who love to clean and to purify themselves. And Allah loves those who make themselves clean and pure." was revealed, the Messenger of Allah said: 'O Ansar! Allah has praised you for your cleanliness. What is the nature of your cleanliness?' They said: 'We perform ablution for prayer and we take bath to cleanse ourselves of impurity due to sexual activity, and we clean ourselves with water (after urinating). He said: 'This is what it is. So adhere to it.'" (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 355)
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was asked about the travelers, and he said, "They are the ones who are fasting."
I heard a man asking for forgiveness for his parents and they were mushrikeen. I said: Are you asking for forgiveness for your parents when they are mushrikeen? He said: Didnʿt Ibraheem (عليه السلام) ask for forgiveness for his father when he was a mushrik? I mentioned that to the Prophet ﷺ and these verses were revealed: “It is not (proper) for the Prophet ﷺ and those who believe to ask Allahʿs forgiveness for the Mushrikeen” [At-Tawbah 9:113-114]. ‘Abdur-Rahman said: And Allah revealed [the words]. “And Ibraheemʿs (Abraham) invoking (of Allah) for his fatherʿs forgiveness was only because of a promise he [Ibraheem (Abraham)] had made to him (his father)ʿ. (Using translation from Aḥmad 1085)
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "May Allah have mercy on you and forgive you, O uncle. I will continue to seek forgiveness for you until Allah forbids me from doing so." So the Muslims began seeking forgiveness for their deceased pagans. Then Allah Almighty revealed, "It is not for the Prophet and those who have believed to ask forgiveness for the polytheists, even if they were relatives, after it has become clear to them that they are companions of Hellfire." [Quran 9:113]
[Machine] When the death of Abu Talib approached, the Prophet ﷺ came to him while Abdullah ibn Abi Umeyah and Abu Jahl ibn Hisham were with him. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him, "O uncle, indeed you are the greatest of them in rights upon me and the best of them in my eyes. And you have the greatest right upon me after my parents. So say a word that will benefit you with intercession for yourself on the Day of Resurrection. Say, "There is no deity worthy of worship except Allah." They said to him, "Are you trying to abandon the religion of Abd al-Muttalib?" He remained silent, so the Messenger of Allah ﷺ repeated it to him. Abu Talib then said, "I adhere to the religion of Abd al-Muttalib." And he passed away. The Prophet ﷺ said, "I will seek forgiveness for you as long as I have not been forbidden from it." Then Allah, the Almighty, revealed the verses {It is not for the Prophet and those who have believed to ask forgiveness for the polytheists} [9:113] until the end of the verse {And the request for forgiveness of Abraham for his father} [9:114].
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ went out to visit the graves, and we went out with him. He commanded us to sit, and we sat. Then he passed by the graves until he reached a particular grave and he stood there for a long time, engaged in private conversation. Then the crying of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ intensified, and we cried along with him. He then turned to us, and 'Umar ibn al-Khattab met him and said, "O Messenger of Allah, what is it that makes you cry, when you have made us cry and startled us?" The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came and sat with us and said, "Does my crying alarm you?" We said, "Yes, O Messenger of Allah." He said, "The grave that you saw me speaking to is the grave of my mother, Aminah bint Wahb. I sought permission from my Lord to visit her grave, and He granted me permission. So I sought His permission to seek forgiveness for her, but He did not grant me permission. And the verse was revealed upon me: 'It is not (proper) for the Prophet and those who believe to ask Allah's forgiveness for the Mushrikun (polytheists).' (Quran 9:113) Until the end of the verse: 'And the request of forgiveness of Ibrahim (Abraham) for his father except for a promise he had made to him.' (Quran 9:114) Then, at that moment, I was seized with something that a child would be seized with from his father's compassion. And that is what made me cry." This hadith was narrated by Muslim through the narration of Yazid ibn Kaysan from Abu Hazim who heard it from Abu Hurairah, summarized by Ayyub bin Hani' from Ibn Ma'in.

[Machine] That the Messenger of Allah ﷺ wanted to send a group of warriors, so he called Ja'far and commanded him to stay in Medina. Ja'far said, "I will never stay behind you, O Messenger of Allah." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then called me (Ali) and resolved to me, even before I spoke. I began to cry. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked me, "What makes you cry, O Ali?" I said, "O Messenger of Allah, certain qualities make me cry. Quraish says, 'Tomorrow he will be quick to abandon his cousin and betray him.' Another quality that makes me cry is wanting to engage in jihad for the sake of Allah, because Allah says, 'They do not step forth to anger the disbelievers nor inflict any injury upon an enemy, but a righteous deed is recorded for them.' I wanted to experience the favor of Allah." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Regarding your statement about Quraish saying that you will be quick to abandon your cousin and betray him, you have a role model in me. They called me a sorcerer, soothsayer, and liar. Are you not pleased to be in the position of Harun (Aaron) to Musa (Moses), except that there is no prophet after me? And concerning your statement about wanting to experience the favor of Allah, there is a box of gifts from Yemen that has come to us. Sell it and enjoy it with Fatima, until Allah bestows His favor upon you. Indeed, Medina is only suitable with me or with you."

that Jabir bin 'Abdullah Al-Ansari said: "One day the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came out to us and said: "While I was sleeping I had a vision as if Jibra'il was at my feet. One of them said to his companion: 'Make a parable for him' so he said: 'Listen so that your ears may hear. Hearken so that your heart may understand! The parable of you and your Ummah is but the parable of a king who conquers a land, then he constructs a house in it. Then he places a table-spread in it, then he sends a messenger to call the people to eat from it. Among them are those who answer the call of the messenger, and among them are those who forsake it. So Allah is the king and the land is Islam, and the house is Paradise, and you O Muhammad! You are the Messenger, so whoever responds to you he enters Islam, and whoever enters Islam he enters Paradise, and whoever enters Paradise, he shall eat of what is in it.'" [Machine] Uthman bin Affan heard that a delegation from the people of Egypt had arrived, so he went to meet them. When they heard about his arrival, they came towards him. He said that he disliked them entering the city before him. They came to him and said, "Please recite from the Quran and start with Surah Yunus, which is the seventh chapter." Uthman began to recite from the Surah until he reached the verse: "Say, have you seen what Allah has sent down to you of provision, and you have made some of it lawful and some unlawful? Say, has Allah permitted you, or do you invent a lie about Allah?" [Quran 10:59]. They then said to him, "Stop! Do you think you have the authority to make something lawful or unlawful that Allah has already protected?" Uthman replied, "Keep listening. The verse was revealed in a specific context. As for the matter of making something lawful or unlawful, Umar had already determined what is lawful and unlawful in relation to the charity's camels. When I became the caliph and the number of charity's camels increased, I added to what Umar had determined, in accordance with the increase in the number of camels, it is confirmed according to the conditions of Muslim, and it has not been excluded by him." This is according to the conditions set by Muslim.

23.11 [Machine] Explanation of Surah Hud
[Machine] When the messenger of Allah ﷺ camped at Tabuk, he stood up and addressed the people saying, "O people, do not ask your Prophet about signs, for the people of a righteous community asked their Prophet to show them a sign, so Allah sent them a she-camel, and it used to come to them from a certain mountain and they would drink its water on the day of its turn, and they would drink from its milk as much as they wanted. But they transgressed the limits set by their Lord and killed it. So Allah promised them with a punishment for three days which was not seen before. Then the cry came upon them and Allah destroyed all those who were under the sky, from the east and the west, except for a man who was in the sanctuary of Allah and Allah protected him from His punishment." The people asked, "O Messenger of Allah, who was that man?" He replied, "Abu Righal."

He ﷺ said, "Allah existed and nothing else existed, and the Throne was above the water. He wrote in the Remembrance (the Preserved Tablet) everything, and then He created seven heavens." He ﷺ said, "Then a person came to him and said, 'Indeed, your camel has gone away.' So he said, 'I wish I had left it.'"

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Anyone who hears about me from this nation, whether they be a Jew or a Christian, and does not believe in me, will enter the Fire." [Hud 17] The factions refer to all religions.
that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "If Allah were to show Mercy to anyone from among the nation of Nūḥ, he would show Mercy to Umm al-Ṣabī (mother of the young boy)." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Nūḥ remained with his nation for a thousand years save fifty inviting them ˹to the Message˺ until the end of his time. He planted trees and they became plentiful/large and they ˹grew˺ in all different ways. Then he cut them and began to make his ship. ˹The people˺ used to pass by and ask him ˹wondering˺ and he would say, 'I am making a ship.', and they would say, 'You're making a ship on land, how would it sail?' He said, 'You will soon find out.' When he was finished and 'fār al-tannūr' (commonly interpreted as the bursting of springs from the ground) and the flooding started in the pathways. Umm al-Ṣabī feared for ˹her child˺ and she loved him intensely. She left toward the mountain until she reached a narrow tract. When the water reach it she left from there until she settled on the mountain. When the water reached up to her neck, she lifted him in her arms until the water washed her away. He then said, "It is as if I am seeing Musa ibn Imran coming down from it, wearing a worn-out garment, heading towards Allah while reciting the Takbir." Then he came to Thaniyyah and asked, "What is this Thaniyyah?" They said, "It is Thaniyyah such and such." He then said, "It is as if I am seeing Yunus ibn Matta riding on a red, curly-haired camel with a braided rein, and he is supplicating while wearing a woolen cloak."

[Hud 80] Then Gabriel turned towards him, saying: "We are messengers of your Lord; they shall not reach you." [Hud 81] He said: Then he suddenly blinded them. They turned back, calling and riding one another until they returned to their people at the door. They said: "We have come to you from those sorcerers and our sight has been bewitched." So, they continued to ride one another until they entered the city. [Hud 82-83] Then the lie was exposed before them, and the guilty ones were killed. Some of them came to Mount Sinai and some of them were struck by a falling stone. [Hud 84] He left with his daughters, who were three, until they reached a place in Sham (Syria), where his eldest daughter died. There was a well known spring near her known as Al-Wariyah. 23.12 [Machine] The interpretation of Surah Yusuf.
[Machine] The Quran was revealed to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , and he recited it to them (the people) over a period of time. They said, "O Messenger of Allah, if only you would narrate stories to us." So Allah, the Exalted and Majestic, revealed the verse {Alif, Lam, Ra. These are the verses of the clear Book} [Surah Yusuf: 1]. He recited it to them until he reached the verse {We relate to you, [O Muhammad], the best of stories} [Surah Yusuf: 3]. Then they said, "O Messenger of Allah, if only you would tell us." So Allah, the Exalted and Majestic, revealed the verse {Allah has sent down the best statement: a consistent Book wherein is reiteration} [Surah Az-Zumar: 23]. All of this is commanded by the Quran.
