23.2 [Machine] Explanation of Surah Al-Baqarah
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
We have begun in this book with the descent of the Quran, in what has been narrated in the Musnad concerning the recitations, and the mention of the companions who compiled and memorized the Quran, before the interpretation of the Surahs.
[Machine] "He saw them walking back and forth between Safa and Marwa and said, 'This is from what I have inherited from you, O offspring of Isma'il.'"
[Machine] In the pre-Islamic era, the devils used to play music all night long between Safa and Marwa. They had idols, which they worshipped. When Islam came, the Muslims said to the Prophet Muhammad, "O Messenger of Allah, we will no longer perform the rite of Sa'y (walking) between Safa and Marwa, as it is something we used to do in the pre-Islamic era." Then Allah revealed the verse, "Indeed, as for those who perform Hajj to the Ka'bah or 'umrah, there is no blame upon them for walking between them" (Quran 2:158). This means that there is no sin upon them, but they will be rewarded.
[Machine] He said, "If it were not for a verse from the Book of Allah, I would not have informed anyone about anything." It was said, "What is it, O Abu Hurayrah?" He said, "The verse: 'Indeed, those who conceal what We sent down of clear proofs and guidance after We made it clear for the people in the Scripture - those are cursed by Allah and cursed by those who curse, except for those who repent and correct themselves and make evident [what they concealed].'" [Al-Baqarah 160]
[Machine] "Do not curse the wind, as it is from the breath of the Merciful. Allah says, 'And the altering of the winds and the clouds which are subjected between the heaven and the earth' [Surah Al-Baqarah 2:164]. Instead, say, 'O Allah, we ask You for the goodness of this wind, and the goodness within it, and the goodness it is sent with. And we seek refuge in You from its evil, and the evil within it, and the evil it is sent with.'"
[Machine] "Al-Mawaddah" translates to "love" or "affection" in English.
[Machine] "He asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about faith and he recited this verse: 'Righteousness is not that you turn your faces toward the east or the west, but [true] righteousness is [in] one who believes in Allah, the Last Day...' [Quran 2:177]. When he finished reciting the verse, he asked him again and he recited it. Then he asked him again and he recited it. Then he asked him again and he said, 'When you do a good deed, love it with your heart, and when you commit a sin, hate it with your heart.'"
[Machine] "A healthy and stingy man hopes for a good living and fears poverty."
[Machine] Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "Poverty and hardship are afflictions, illness is a trial, and in times of adversity, one should say, 'at the time of murder.'"
[Machine] He is the main pillar in the satisfaction of his family.
[Machine] "That the Messenger of Allah ﷺ enacted the law of retribution (qisas) according to the conditions of the two sheikhs (referring to Abu Bakr and Umar), and did not implement it according to the conditions of Bukhari and Muslim."
[Machine] He stood up and delivered a speech to the people here in Basra. He recited Surah Al-Baqarah to them and explained its meaning. He then came upon this verse, "If you leave behind a good will for your parents..." [Al-Baqarah 180], and said, "This verse was abrogated, and what comes after it was mentioned."
[Machine] Ali visited a man from the Banu Hashim tribe who was sick and wanted to give him some advice. However, the man refused and Ali told him that Allah says, "If you leave a good deed, it is better for you" (Surah Al-Baqarah, 180). So, he advised him to leave his wealth for his inheritors.
[Machine] As for the conditions of fasting, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to Madinah and started fasting three days in every month, as well as observing the fast on the day of Ashura. Later, Allah made fasting obligatory and revealed the verse: "O you who have believed, decreed upon you is fasting as it was decreed upon those before you" [Qur'an 2:183] until the verse "And upon those who are able [to fast], a ransom [as substitute] of feeding a poor person [each day]" [Qur'an 2:184]. Thus, whoever wished, fasted, and whoever wished, fed a poor person, and this was permissible. Then, Allah revealed another verse: "The month of Ramadhan [is that] in which was revealed the Qur'an" [Qur'an 2:185] until the verse "So whoever sights [the new moon of] the month, let him fast it" [Qur'an 2:185]. Allah made fasting obligatory for the resident who is capable and eased it for the sick and the traveler. He also made feeding required for the elderly who are unable to fast. These were the two options available, and they used to eat and drink during the night and have sexual relations until they slept. However, if they slept, they abstained from all that until dawn. Then, there was a man from the Ansar known as Sirmah who used to work while fasting until the evening, then he went to his family, performed the Isha prayer, and slept without eating or drinking until morning, thus remaining in the state of fasting. I (the narrator) also joined him once, so we slept and woke up while fasting. As for Umar, he had a sexual relationship with a slave girl or a free woman after sleeping, and he mentioned it to the Prophet ﷺ . Allah then revealed the verse: "It has been made lawful for you to approach your wives during the nights of the fast. They are clothing for you and you are clothing for them" [Qur'an 2:187] until the verse "Then complete the fast until the night" [Qur'an 2:187].
[Machine] "They are a dwelling for you and you are a dwelling for them."
"We were in a Roman city, when a large column of Romans came out to us. So about the same number or more of the Muslims went towards them. The commander of the people of Egypt was 'Uqbah bin 'Amir, and the commenter of the (our) group was Fadalah bin 'Ubaid. One man among the Muslims reached the Roman line until he entered amidst them, so the people started screaming: 'Subhan Allah! He has thrown himself into destruction!' Abu Ayyub Al-Ansari said: 'O you people! You give this interpretation for this Ayah, while this Ayah was only revealed about us, the people among the Ansar, when Allah made Islam might, and increased its supporters. Some of us secretly said to each other, outside of the presence of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ: "Our wealth has been ruined, and Allah has strengthened Islam, and increased its supporters, so if we tend to our wealth then what we lost of it shall be revitalized for us." So Allah, Blessed and Most High, revealed to His Prophet ﷺ, rebuking what we said: 'And spend in the cause of Allah, and do not throw yourselves into destruction. (2:195)' So the destruction was tending to the wealth and maintaining it.' Abu Ayyub did not cease traveling in Allah's cause, until he was buried in the land of the Romans." (Using translation from Tirmidhī 2972)

[Machine] There is a man, O Abu 'Umara, "and do not throw yourselves into destruction with your own hands" [Al-Baqarah 195]. Is he the man who encounters the enemy and fights until he is killed? He said, "No, but he is the man who commits a sin and says, 'Allah will not forgive me.'"
[Machine] From the saying of Allah Almighty "And complete the Hajj and Umrah for Allah" [Al-Baqarah 196], He said, "That you may be prohibited from returning to your family's abode."
[Machine] He used to recite it as "So whoever does not find [the means for] fasting, then the fasting of three consecutive days [is required]."

[Machine] Adultery and immorality are sins committed against Allah, such as forbidden sexual acts and other transgressions. Quarreling, insulting, and disputes are also frowned upon.
[Machine] They were in the early pilgrimage trading in Mina, such as Suq Al-Majaz and the seasons of the Hajj. When the Quran was revealed, they feared trading. So Allah, the Almighty, revealed: "There is no sin on you if you seek the bounty of your Lord." [Al-Baqarah 198] in the seasons of the Hajj.

[Machine] "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ delivered a sermon to us at Arafat. He praised and glorified Allah, then he said: 'As for what follows, indeed, the people of polytheism and idolatry used to push away from this place at sunset when the sun is over the mountain tops like men's head coverings on their heads. Our guidance is different from their guidance. They also used to push away from Al-Mash'ar Al-Haram at sunrise when the sun is over the mountain tops like men's head coverings on their heads. Our guidance is different from their guidance.'"
I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say between the two corners: O Allah, bring us a blessing in this world and a blessing in the next and guard us from punishment of Hell. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 1892)
[Machine] "I have hired myself out from my people in return for them carrying me, and I have set aside from my wages for them in return for allowing me to perform Hajj with them.
