23. Book of Quranic Exegesis (Tafsīr) (19/23)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
We have begun in this book with the descent of the Quran, in what has been narrated in the Musnad concerning the recitations, and the mention of the companions who compiled and memorized the Quran, before the interpretation of the Surahs.
[Machine] "From his father, he said, 'Two gardens [in Paradise] for those who fear their Lord.' [Quran 55:46] He said, 'Two gardens of gold for the pioneers and two gardens of silver for the followers.'" According to the condition of a Muslim.
[Machine] "You have been informed about the hidden matters, so how about the evident ones?" It is correct according to the conditions of the two sheikhs, but it has not been narrated based on the conditions of Bukhari and Muslim.
[Machine] From the Prophet ﷺ regarding His saying, exalted and majestic, "As if they were rubies and coral" [Surah Rahman 58], he said, "He looks at her face, and her cheek is more beautiful than a mirror, and even the slightest pearl on it illuminates what is between the East and the West. And she wears seventy garments, her sight penetrates them until she sees her leg joint behind them." (Narrated by a reliable chain, but not included by Daraj Sahib in his collection of miracles.)
[Machine] "The throne of Allah was above the water, then He created a protective barrier for Himself, and then He created another one until He enclosed it with a single pearl. Allah, Exalted be He, says: 'And beneath them both [in meaning] are two gardens.' He also says: 'And it is the one that no creature knows what is hidden in it.' It is also the one that Allah, Exalted be He, says: 'No soul knows what has been hidden for them of comfort for the eyes as reward for what they used to do.' They will be given ornaments from it every day."
[Machine] "The date palm of Paradise, its trunks are emerald green, and its branches are red gold, and its leaves are clothing for the people of Paradise among which their garments, necklaces, and their fruits are like pots or water pitchers, whiter than milk, sweeter than honey, and softer than butter, and it does not have thorns."
23.56 [Machine] Explanation of Surah Al-Waqi'ah
[Machine] Abu Bakr as-Siddiq asked the Prophet (pbuh), "What has made you gray?" The Prophet (pbuh) replied, "Surah Hud, Al-Waqi'ah, Al-Mursalat, and Amma Yatasa'aloon, and when the sun is wrapped up in darkness."
[Machine] The companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to say, "Verily, Allah benefits us through the Arabs and their issues." An Arab Bedouin came forward one day and said, "O Messenger of Allah, indeed Allah mentions in the Quran a harmful tree, and I did not think that in Paradise there would be a tree that harms its owner." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked, "And what is it?" The Bedouin replied, "Al-Sidr (the lote tree), for it has thorns." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "{In a position which is neither ascendant nor descending} [Al-Waqi'ah 28]. Allah takes away its thorns and turns every thorn into a fruit. And indeed, it grows fruit that ripens with seventy-two different colors, and there is no color like the other." This hadith has a correct chain of narrators, but it has not been documented in a book.
[Machine] "Min dukhanin aswad" translates to "From black smoke" in English.
[Machine] "But you, O Lord, are threefold." Then he recited, "Have you seen what you sow? Is it you who sows it, or are We the ones who sow?" (Al-Waqi'a 63) He said, "Nay, but you, O Lord, nay, but you, O Lord, nay, but you, O Lord." Then he recited, "Have you seen the water you drink? Is it you who send it down from the clouds, or are We the ones who send it down?" (Al-Waqi'a 68) He said, "Nay, but you, O Lord, nay, but you, O Lord, nay, but you, O Lord." Then he recited, "Have you seen the fire that you kindle? Is it you who cause its tree to grow, or are We the ones who cause it to grow?" He said, "Nay, but you, O Lord, nay, but you, O Lord, nay, but you, O Lord."
[Machine] The Quran was revealed in its entirety from the upper heaven to the lower heaven in one night, and then it was revealed gradually over the years. He (Prophet Muhammad) recited this verse: "So I swear by the positions of the stars" [Al-Waqi'ah 75]. He (Prophet Muhammad) said, "It was revealed in separate parts."
[Machine] We were with Salman, then he left for a need and disappeared from us. Then he came back to us, and there was no water between us and him. We said to him, "O Abu Abdullah, if you perform ablution, we will ask you about some things from the Quran." He replied, "Ask me, for I am not in a state of impurity." He then recited, "Indeed, it is a noble Quran in a hidden Book. None touch it except the purified ones." [Surah Al-Waqi'ah, verse 78].
When "Glorify the name of your mighty Lord" was revealed, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Use it when bowing, and when "Glorify the name of your most high Lord" was revealed, he said: Use it when prostrating yourself. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 869)
23.57 [Machine] Explanation of Surah Al-Hadid
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "I will be the first to be given permission to prostrate on the Day of Resurrection and the first to be given permission to raise my head. So, I will raise my head and look in front of me to recognize my Ummah (community) among the nations. And I will look to my right to recognize my Ummah among the nations. And I will look to my left to recognize my Ummah among the nations." A man asked, "O Messenger of Allah, how will you recognize your Ummah among the nations from the time of Noah until your Ummah?" He said, "They will have bright faces from the traces of ablution. No one from the nations will have that except them. And I will recognize them by the marks of prostration on their faces, and I will recognize them by the light that is in front of them, to their right, to their left, and from their right sides."
[Machine] "Regarding the saying of Abdullah in the verse {Their light proceeds swiftly before them} [Al-Hadid 12], he said, 'They will be given their light according to their deeds. Among them are those whose light is like a mountain, and the lowest of them has a light that reaches up to his thumb, sometimes it flickers and other times it is lit.'"
[Machine] Here we see the Messenger of Allah ﷺ showing us Hell.
“Lest they become as those who received the Scripture before, and the term was prolonged for them and so their hearts were hardened? And many of them were rebellious.” [57:16] (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 4192)
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to say, "The people of Jahiliyyah (pre-Islamic period of ignorance) used to say that omens are only in women, animals, and houses." Then I recited, "{No disaster strikes upon the earth or among yourselves except that it is in a register before We bring it into being - indeed that, for Allah, is easy}" [Surah Al-Hadid 22].
[Machine] "Is there not anyone who does not experience sadness and happiness? But it is those who make calamity a source of patience and make joy a reason for gratitude." It is a soundly-narrated Hadith, and it has not been excluded from being valid.
˹regarding the āyah:˺ 'And We placed in the hearts of those who followed him compassion and mercy and monasticism, which they innovated; We did not prescribe it for them except [that they did so] seeking the approval of Allah. But they did not observe it with due observance. So We gave the ones who believed among them their reward, but many of them are defiantly disobedient.' (Ḥadīd 57:27), Ibn Masʿūd said that the Prophet ﷺ said to me, "O ʿAbdullāh b. Masʿūd!" So I said: At your service, O Messenger of Allah three time. He said, "Do you know which one of the holds of Īmān (Faith) is the strongest?" I said: Allah and His Messenger know best. He said, "The strongest ˹holds˺ of Īmān is wilāyah in ˹the name of˺ Allah whether in love in ˹His name˺ or and enmity in ˹His name.˺ O ʿAbdullāh b. Masʿūd!" So I said: At your service, O Messenger of Allah three time. He said, "Do you know which of the Believers are best?" I said: Allah and His Messenger know best. He said, "The best of people are the ones that have the best deeds if they have an understanding of the Religion. O ʿAbdullāh b. Masʿūd!" So I said: At your service, O Messenger of Allah three time. He said, "Do you know which of the people is the most knowledgable?" I said: Allah and His Messenger know best. He said, "The most knowledgeable of the people is the one most insightful for the truth when people differ even if he has been deficient in deed and even if he was crawling."
"The ones before us differed into seventy-two sects. The saved among them were three and the rest will be ruined: the sect that faced the ˹tyrant˺ kings and fought them for the sake of Religion of Allah and the Religion of Jesus, the son of Mary, until they were killed, and (2) and the sect that had no strength to face the ˹tyrant˺ kings nor in steadfastness in another one within their nation by they called to Allah and theto the Religion of Jesus, the son of Mary, and they poured into the mountains and observed monasticism there. They are the ones about whom Allah said, 'and monasticism, which they innovated; We did not prescribe it for them except ˹that they did so˺ seeking the approval of Allah. But they did not observe it with due observance. So We gave the ones who believed among them their reward, but many of them are defiantly disobedient.' (Ḥadīd 57:27) i.e. the Believers are the one who believe in Me and have certainty in Me and the disbelievers are the ones who reject Me and deny me."

23.58 [Machine] Tafsir (interpretation) of Surah Al-Mujadila
"Blessed is the One Whose hearing encompasses all things. I heard some of the words of Khawlah bint Tha'labah, but some of her words were not clear to me, when she complained to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about her husband, and said: 'O Messenger of Allah, ﷺ he has consumed my youth and I split my belly for him (i.e., bore him many children), but when I grew old and could no longer bear children he declared Zihar upon me; O Allah, I complain to You.' She continued to complain until Jibra'il brought down these Verses: 'Indeed Allah has heard the statement of she who pleads with you (O Muhammad) concerning her husband, and complains to Allah" (58:1) (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 2063)

Khawlah was the wife of Aws ibn as-Samit; he was a man immensely given to sexual intercourse. When his desire for intercourse was intensified, he made his wife like his mother's back. So Allah, the Exalted, sent down Qur'anic verses relating to expiation for zihar. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 2219)

'O you who have believed, when you converse privately with the Messenger, present before your consultation a charity.' [Al-Mujadila 58:12] The verse was truthful. I had a dinar, so I sold it for ten dirhams and I consulted with the Prophet, peace be upon him. So every time I consulted with the Prophet, peace be upon him, I would present a dirham before my confidential talk. Then the verse was abrogated and no one acted upon it. And then the verse was revealed 'Are you afraid to present before your consultation charities?' [Al-Mujadilah 58:13]

When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saw him, he called him and said, "You and your companions curse me, so leave me to give them to you." So, he left and called them and they swore by what they said and did until they betrayed him. Then Allah, the Almighty, revealed, "On the Day when Allah will resurrect them all and they swear to Him as they swear to you and think that they are [standing] on something. No! Indeed, they are liars." (Surah Al-Mujadila, 58:18)

He heard Ibn 'Umar and Ibn 'Abbas testify that the Messenger of Allah [SAW] forbade Ad-Dubba' (gourds), Al-Hantam, Al-Muzaffat, and An-Naqir. Then the Messenger of Allah [SAW] recited this Verse: "And whatsoever the Messenger (Muhammad) gives you, take it; and whatsoever he forbids you, abstain (from it)." (Using translation from Nasāʾī 5643)
[Machine] "A head of a sheep was gifted to a man from the companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ . He said, 'Indeed, my brother Fulan and his family are more in need of this than us.' So he sent it to him. He continued to send it to him from one person to another until it reached seven households and then returned to the first person. Then the verse was revealed: 'And they give [from their wealth] preference over themselves, even though they are in privation.' (Surah Al-Hashr, 59:9) until the end of the verse."

[Machine] The people are divided into three groups, and two of them have already passed while only one remains. The best thing for you to do is to be in the position that has remained, as described in the verse: "For the poor emigrants who were expelled from their homes and their properties" [Surah Al-Hashr 59:8]. Then he recited: "And those who had established their homes and faith before them" [Surah Al-Hashr 59:9]. Then he said: "These are the Ansar and this is their position, which has already passed." Then he recited: "And those who came after them say: 'Our Lord, forgive us and our brothers who preceded us in faith'" [Surah Al-Hashr 59:10]. He said: "So these two positions have already passed, and this remaining position is the best thing for you to be in."

Satan came to him and said, 'Kill her, for if they find out about you, you will be disgraced.' So he killed her and buried her. Then they came to him and took him and as they were walking, Satan came to him and said, 'It is I who beautified her for you, so prostrate to me in a prostration of gratitude and I will save you.' So he prostrated to him, and Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, revealed the verse: 'Like the example of the Devil when he says to man, "Disbelieve." For it is by this that he agrees to the marriage." So Hind said, "I will not pledge to you regarding theft, for I steal from my husband's wealth." So the Prophet ﷺ removed his hand and she removed hers until he sent for Abu Sufyan to annul their marriage. Abu Sufyan said, "As for fresh dates, they are good, but as for the dry ones, no, they are not a blessing." She said, "So we pledged to him." Then Fatimah said, "There was no other dome that I detested more than your dome, nor did I want Allah to make it permissible and bless it. [Machine] We gathered and discussed. Then we said, "Who among you will go to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and ask him which deeds are most beloved to Allah?" Then we dispersed and agreed that one of us would go to him. So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent a messenger to us and gathered us. He then paired us up and recited to us the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying, "Glorify Allah, whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. He is the Almighty, the Wise." Then he asked, "O you who have believed, why do you say what you do not do?" Until the end of the Surah. Abu Salamah narrated that Abdullah ibn Salam recited it to us from the beginning to the end. Yahya then recited it to us from the beginning to the end. Al-Awza'i recited it to us from the beginning to the end. Yahya ibn Abi Kathir then recited it to us from the beginning to the end. [Machine] Abu Jahl passed by the Prophet ﷺ while he was praying and said, "Didn't I forbid you from praying, O Muhammad? You know that no one else has called people to prayer more than me." The Prophet ﷺ scolded him. Then Jibril, peace be upon him, said, "Let him make his call, we will call the Zabaniyah." By Allah, if he had made his call, the angels of punishment would have seized him.

23.63 [Machine] The interpretation of Surah Al-Munafiqun
“We were participating in a battle along with the Messenger of Allah, and there were some people from the Bedouins with us. So we all rushed toward some water and the Bedouins raced us to it. One of the Bedouins beat his companions to it and he (tried to obstruct) the pond, he placed rocks around it and he put a leather sheet over it until his companions came.” He said: “A man among the Ansar reached the Bedouin and he dropped the reigns of his camel to drink, but the Bedouin would not allow him. So he started removing the barriers around the water, but the Bedouin raised a stick beating the Ansari man on the head, and smashed it. He went to Abdullah bin Ubayy, the head of the hypocrite, to inform him – he was in fact one of his companions. So Abdullah bin Ubayy became enraged, the he said: ‘Do not spend anything on whoever is with Muhammad until they depart.’ Meaning the Bedouins. They were preparing food for the Messenger of Allah. So Abdullah said: ‘When they depart from Muhammad, then bring Muhammad some food, and let him and whoever is with him eat it.’ Then he said to his companions: ‘If we return to Al-Madinah, indeed the more honorable will expel therefrom the meaner.’” Zaid said: “And I was riding behind the Messenger of Allah, and I had heard Abdullah bin Ubayy, so I informed my uncle who went to tell the Messenger of Allah. He sent a message to him (Abdullah) but he took an oath and denied it.” He said: “So the Messenger of Allah accepted what he said and did not believe me. So my uncle came to me and said: ‘You only wanted the Messenger of Allah to hate you, and the Muslims to say that you lied.’” He said: “I suffered such worry as has not been suffered by anyone else.” He said: “(Later) while I was on the move with the Messenger of Allah on a journey, my mind was relieved of worry, since the Messenger of Allah came to me and rubbed my ear and smiled in my face. I would never be happier than with that as long as the world remained. Then Abu Bakr caught up to me, and said: ‘What did the Messenger of Allah say to you?’ I said: ‘He did not say anything to me, he only rubbed my ear and smiled in my face.’ He said: ‘Receive the good news!’ Then Umar caught up with me and I said the same to him as I had said to Abu Bakr. In the morning the Messenger of Allah recited Surat Al-Munafiqin.” (Using translation from Tirmidhī 3313)

23.64 [Machine] Interpretation of Surah At-Taghabun
[Machine] According to the saying of Allah Almighty, "He is the one who created you, so among you, some are disbelievers and some are believers." [Surah Al-Taghabun, verse 2]. So Al-A'mash narrated to us from Abu Sufyan from Jabir, who said that the Prophet ﷺ said, "Every servant will be resurrected according to what he died upon." Muslim has recorded this Hadith from Al-A'mash, but he did not include it in this context, according to the condition requested by Muslim, and he mentioned it from Jabir.
[Machine] This verse {Indeed, among your wives and your children are enemies to you, so beware of them} [Al-Taghabun 14] was revealed in a group of people from the people of Mecca who embraced Islam and wanted to come to the Prophet ﷺ . However, their wives and children refused to let them go, so they came to Medina. When they arrived in the presence of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , they saw that they had attained knowledge, so they understood that they deserve punishment. Then Allah, the Almighty, revealed the verse {But if you pardon and overlook} [Al-Taghabun 14].
[Machine] Regarding this verse, "And whoever is protected from the stinginess of his soul - it is those who will be the successful." [Al-Hashr 9], and I, as a person, there is nothing that I have the power over, and nothing escapes my control. I fear that this verse has afflicted me. Abdullah said, "You have mentioned stinginess, and stinginess is a terrible thing. As for what Allah mentioned in the Quran, it is not like what you said, that you intentionally seek the wealth of others or the wealth of your brother and consume it."
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Allah, the Almighty, says: 'I have borrowed from My servant and he refuses to lend to Me, and has cursed Me without knowing. He says: 'O time! O time! And I am the Time.' Then Abu Hurairah recited the following verse from Allah, the Almighty:
'If you lend to Allah a goodly loan, He will multiply it for you.' (Surah At-Taghabun, 64:17)"
23.65 [Machine] Explanation of Surah At-Talaq
[Machine] From Muhammad bin Ubaid bin Abi Rafe', the servant of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , from Ikrimah, from Ibn Abbas, who said: "Abd Yazeed divorced the mother of Rukana, then he married a woman from Muzaynah. She came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, 'O Messenger of Allah, nothing can compensate for me except for this strand of hair, which she took from her head.' At that, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ took hold of his outer garment, then he called Rukana and his brothers, and then he said to those seated with him, 'Do you see this from this?' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to Abdu Yazeed, 'Divorce her.' And he did so. Then he said to Abi Rukana, 'Take her back.' He said, 'O Messenger of Allah, I have divorced her.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Indeed, I knew that, so take her back.' Then the verse was revealed: 'O Prophet, when you divorce women, divorce them for their prescribed waiting period.' (Quran 65:1)"

[Machine] Abu Dharr used to make the Messenger of Allah ﷺ recite this verse: "And whoever fears Allah - He will make for him a way out and will provide for him from where he does not expect." [Machine] This verse is revealed in a man who was brave but poor, with limited means and many dependents. He came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and asked him for something, and the Prophet ﷺ said to him, "Fear Allah and be patient." He returned to his companions and they asked him what the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had given him, and he replied, "He did not give me anything, but he said to me, 'Fear Allah and be patient.'" He had not waited long until his son came to him with sheep that were captured from the enemy. He went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and informed him about them, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him, "Take all of them." And then the verse was revealed: "And whoever fears Allah - He will make for him a way out and will provide for him from where he does not expect." [At-Talaq: 2-3]

[Machine] When the verse in Surah Al-Baqarah was revealed, in a certain number among the number of women, they said, "A certain number of women remain unmentioned, including young and old women, as well as those who have ceased menstruation and pregnant women." So Allah, exalted and majestic, revealed the verse in Surah An-Nisa: "And those who no longer expect menstruation among your women - if you doubt, then their period is three months, and [also for] those who have not menstruated. And for those who are pregnant, their term is until they give birth." [Quran 65:4] "With an authentic chain of narration, and they did not mention an exception." Authentic.
