5. Fasting (9/18)
"Ibn Umar was asked about fasting (the Day of) Arafah (at Arafat). He said: 'I performed Hajj with the Prophet, and he did not fast it, and with Abu Bakr, and he did not fast it, and with Umar, and he did not fast it, and with Uthman, and he did not fast it. I do no fast it, nor order it nor forbid it." (Using translation from Tirmidhī 751)
[Machine] "We used to compensate him for a missed fast with fasting for a whole year," Abu Abdur Rahman Abu Hariz said. He is not strong and his name is Abdullah bin Hussein, a judge from Sistan. This narration is considered rejected."
The Prophet ﷺ said: The day of Arafah, the day of sacrifice, the days of tashriq are (the days of) our festival, O people of Islam. These are the days of eating and drinking. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 2419)

[Machine] "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ prohibited fasting on the day of sacrifice."
5.106 [Machine] The beginning of fasting on the day of Ashura, and the mention of the variation of the narrators' words in it.
When the Prophet ﷺ came to Medina, he found the Jews observing fast on the day of 'Ashurah; so they were asked about it (by the Prophet). They said: This is a day on which Allah gave Moses domination over Pharaoh. We fast on it out of reverence to him. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: We have a closer connection with Moses than you have. He then gave orders that it should be observed. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 2444)
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ arrived in Medina and found the Jews fasting on the day of Ashura. He asked them, "What is this?" They replied, "This is the day on which Allah saved Musa (Moses) and drowned Pharaoh. So, Musa fasted out of gratitude to Allah, and we also fast on this day." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "We have more right to Musa and are closer to him than you are." So, he fasted on that day and commanded others to do so. [231] 2849 Isma'il ibn Ya'qub al-Harrani as-Sabihi reported to us, saying: Ibn Musa, the son of A'yan, reported to us, saying: My father reported to us from al-Harith, meaning the son of 'Umayr, from Ayyub, from Abdullah ibn Sa'id ibn Jubayr, from his father, from Ibn Abbas of similar account.
(The tribe of) Quraish used to fast on the day of Ashura' in the Pre-Islamic period, and then Allah's Apostle ordered (Muslims) to fast on it till the fasting in the month of Ramadan was prescribed; whereupon the Prophet ﷺ said, "He who wants to fast (on 'Ashura') may fast, and he who does not want to fast may not fast." (Using translation from Bukhārī 1893)
The Quraish used to fast on the day of 'Ashurah in pre Islamic days. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ would fast on it in pre-Islamic period. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to Medina, he fasted on it and commanded to fast on it. When the fast of Ramadan was prescribed, that became obligatory, and (fasting on) 'Ashurah was abandoned. He who wishes may fast on it and he who wishes may leave it. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 2442)
'A'isha (Allah be pleased with her) reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had ordered to observe fast (on 'Ashura) before the fasting in Ramadan was made obligatory. But when it became obligatory, then he who wished fasted on the day of Ashura, and he who wished did not observe it (on that day). (Using translation from Muslim 1125d)
“That was a day when the people of the Ignorance used to fast. So whoever among you wants to fast may do so, and whoever does not want to may leave it.” (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 1737)
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ ordered us to fast on Ashura before Ramadan arrived, but when Ramadan arrived, he did not order us or forbid us.
"We used to fast on 'Ashura and give Zakatul-Fitr, and when the command to fast in Ramadan was revealed, and the command to give Zakah was revealed, we were neither commanded to give it, nor told not to do so, and we used to do it." (Using translation from Nasāʾī 2506)
[Machine] Abdullah said, "We used to fast on Ashura, but when Ramadan came, we were not commanded to fast nor prohibited from it, and we continued to observe it."
[Machine] Abdullah said, "Today is a voluntary fast for me before Ramadan. If you wish to break your fast, break it."
5.107 [Machine] The mention of the differences regarding the construction of Umar ibn Umayr in the incident of Abdullah ibn Masud in the fasting of the day of Ashura.
[Machine] "A day that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to fast before the arrival of Ramadan, but when Ramadan arrived, he abandoned it."
[Machine] "I visited Ibn Mas'ood from one Ramadan to the next, and I never saw him on any day except that I would meet him. I never saw him fasting on a day except for the day of Ashura."
[Machine] It was the Day of Ashura, a day that the Jews used to fast and consider it a holiday. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ arrived in Medina, he was informed of this. He said, "So fast on this day, you (Muslims) should fast it." Raqabah disagreed with him.
[Machine] It was the day of Ashura for the people of Yathrib, where the women would adorn themselves with their special clothes. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Go against them and fast on this day."
5.108 Recommendation to fast the day of ʿAshūrāʾ
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ said to Aslam, "Fast today." They said, "But we have already eaten." He said, "Then fast the rest of your day, meaning the day of Ashura." Sa'id disagreed with him.
[Machine] About his uncle, that they visited the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on the day of Ashura and they had had breakfast. So he asked them, "Are you fasting today?" They said, "We had breakfast, so he ordered us to complete the rest of our day and said to them, 'Complete the rest of your day.'"
[Machine] We went to the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , on the morning of Ashura and he asked us, "Have you fasted?" We said, "We have had our morning meal, O Messenger of Allah." He said, "Then fast for the rest of your day." Abu Abdur Rahman said, "Muhammad ibn Bakr is not strong in narrating hadiths."
[Machine] I heard the Prophet ﷺ on the day of Ashura saying, "Indeed, I am fasting, so whoever wants to fast may do so." He then sent a message to the people of Al-Awali saying, "Whoever has eaten should not eat, and whoever has not eaten should complete their fast." Abu Abdullah Al-Rahman said, "This last statement is a mistake. We do not know of anyone among the companions of Al-Zuhri who followed it and disagreed with Qutaybah."
[Machine] I heard Muawiyah on the day of Ashura while he was on the pulpit in the city saying, "Where are your scholars, O people of Medina? I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying on this day, 'I am fasting, so whoever among you wants to fast, let them fast.'" Abu Abdur Rahman said, "This statement is more correct than the hadith of Muhammad ibn Mansur and the other speech is incorrect."
[Machine] I heard the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , say on this day, "This is the day of Ashura, and Allah has not obligated fasting on you. But I am fasting, so whoever among you wishes to fast, let him fast, and whoever does not wish to fast, let him break his fast." Abu Abdur-Rahman said, "This is an incorrect hadith, and we do not know of any of the companions of Az-Zuhri who narrated this hadith from Abu Salamah except for this. The correct narration is from Humaid bin Abdul Rahman."
[Machine] He heard Muawiyah giving a sermon on the Prophet's pulpit, ﷺ . He said, "O people of Medina, I heard the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , saying, 'This is the day of Ashura, and its fasting is not obligatory upon you. However, I am fasting. Whoever wishes to fast may do so, and whoever wishes to break their fast may do so.'" Abu Abdullah al-Rahman said, "This is also a mistake, and Nu'man ibn Rashid is weak and often makes mistakes according to Al-Zuhri, and similar to him is Zam'ah ibn Salih."
[Machine] He informed him that he heard Mu'awiyah giving a sermon to the people of Medina saying, "O people of Medina, where are your scholars? I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying, 'Indeed, this is the day of Ashura and Allah did not make it obligatory for you to fast. So whoever wishes to fast, let them fast, and whoever wishes to break their fast, let them break it.'" Abu Abdullah said, "And this is the correct opinion."
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to a man who became Muslim after the morning of the day of Ashura: "Go to your people and command them to fast this day." The new Muslim asked, "O Messenger of Allah, what if I find someone from them eating?" The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Then let him complete his fast."
5.109 What day is the day of ʿĀshūrāʾ
[Machine] Prepare, so when the ninth day comes, become a fasting person. I said, "Did Muhammad ﷺ fast like this?" He said, "Yes, that is how he used to fast it."
5.110 [Machine] Fasting six days of Shawwal
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , said, "Fasting the month of Ramadan is equivalent to ten months of fasting, and fasting six days of Shawwal is equivalent to two months. That is fasting for a year."
[Machine] On the authority of Thawban, the freed slave of the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , who said that he heard the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , say: "Allah has made good deeds ten times their worth, up to seven hundred times, except for fasting, which is for Me and I will reward it as I will. There are two occasions of joy for one who fasts: the joy of breaking his fast and the joy of meeting his Lord. The smell from the mouth of a fasting person is better in the sight of Allah than the scent of musk. The one who fasts has two moments of happiness: one is when he breaks his fast, and the other is when he meets his Lord. Verily, the breath of one who fasts is sweeter in the sight of Allah than the smell of musk."
5.111 [Machine] Mentioning the disagreement of the carriers regarding the news of Abu Ayyub
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Whoever fasts Ramadhan and follows it with six days of Shawwal, it is as if they have fasted the entire year." Abu Abdullah Al-Rahman said, "This is a mistake, and the correct statement is from Umar Ibn Thabit."
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Whoever fasts during the month of Ramadan and follows it with six days of Shawwal, it is as if he has fasted for the entire year."
[Machine] Narrated from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ : "Whoever fasts Ramadan and follows it with six days of Shawwal, it is as if he fasted the entire year." Abu Abdur-Rahman Saad ibn Sa'id said, "It is a weak narration." Likewise, Ahmad ibn Hanbal said, "They are three brothers: Yahya ibn Sa'id ibn Qays, who is trustworthy and reliable, and Abdul Rabih ibn Sa'id, who is also acceptable, and Saad ibn Sa'id, the third, who is weak."
[Machine] He said, "Whoever fasts the month of Ramadan and then follows it with six days of Shawwal, it is as if they have fasted the entire year".
[Machine] We fought alongside Abu Ayyub and observed the fast during Ramadan. When we broke our fast, he stood among the people and said, "I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying, 'Whoever fasts Ramadan and follows it with six days of Shawwal, it will be as if he fasted the entire year.'" Abu Abdurrahman Utbah ibn Abi Hakim remarked, "This saying is not strong." Muhammad ibn Abdul Karim ibn Muhammad ibn Abdul Rahman ibn Huwaytib ibn Abdul Azeez al-Harani informed me, "Uthman, the son of Amr al-Harani, told us that Umar, meaning the son of Thabit, narrated to us from Muhammad ibn al-Munkadir, who narrated from Abu Ayyub al-Ansari, who said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said similar words." Abu Abdurrahman said, "I have seen this sheikh with books regarding other matters, and these hadiths resemble the hadiths of Muhammad ibn Abi Humayd. I am not sure if he heard them from Muhammad or from those elderly scholars. As for the sheikh, he used to narrate from him without mentioning Muhammad ibn Abi Humayd. So, if these hadiths are his narrations from those elderly scholars and he did not hear them from Muhammad, then he is weak. As for Uthman and Muhammad ibn Abi Humayd, they are not significant in the hadith."

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked a man: Did you fast the last day of Sha'ban ? He replied: No. He said: If you did not observe a fast, you must fast for a day. One of the two narrators said: For two days. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 2328)
[Machine] "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him, 'Have you observed anything in secret during this month?' He said, 'No.' He said, 'Then if you break your fast or the people break their fast, fast for two days.' 'Amr said that Yahya narrated twice from Muttarrif that the Prophet ﷺ said to 'Imran: 'Inform us.' 'Amr bin 'Ali said: Muhammad bin 'Abdul-'Ala informed us, from Al-Mu'tamir, from his father, from Abu Al-'Ala', from Muttarrif, similar to this. 'Abu Al-'Ala' said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to a man, so he mentioned something similar to this. So I said to him: 'From whom did you hear this?' He said: 'I asked a man from his household, from whom did you hear this?' So the man said: 'From 'Imran bin Husain, from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ .' "

I never saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ fasting in the ten days of Dhu'I-Hijja. (Using translation from Muslim 1176a)
The Apostle of Allah ﷺ did not observe fast in the ten days of Dhul-Hijja. (Using translation from Muslim 1176b)
I never saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ fasting during the first ten days of Dhu al-Hijjah. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 2439)

[Machine] He saw a man following the people's caravans in Mina during the days of Tashreeq on a camel, saying, "Do not fast these days, for they are days of eating and drinking, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ prohibited fasting during them." Abdullah ibn Abu Bakr and Salim Abu An-Nadr opposed him.
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ ordered him to announce during the days of Tashreeq that they are days of eating and drinking. It was conveyed by Malik.
