[Machine] It was the Day of Ashura, a day that the Jews used to fast and consider it a holiday. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ arrived in Medina, he was informed of this. He said, "So fast on this day, you (Muslims) should fast it." Raqabah disagreed with him.  

الكبرى للنسائي:٢٨٦١أَخْبَرَنَا الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ حُرَيْثٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو أُسَامَةَ عَنْ أَبِي عُمَيْسٍ عَنْ قَيْسِ بْنِ مُسْلِمٍ عَنْ طَارِقِ بْنِ شِهَابٍ عَنْ أَبِي مُوسَى قَالَ

كَانَ يَوْمُ عَاشُورَاءَ يَوْمًا تَصُومُهُ الْيَهُودُ وَتَتَّخِذُهُ عِيدًا فَلَمَّا قَدِمَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ الْمَدِينَةَ أُخْبِرَ بِذَلِكَ قَالَ «فَصُومُوهُ أَنْتُمْ» خَالَفَهُ رَقَبَةُ

The day of 'Ashura was one which the Jews respected and they treated it as Id. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: You also observe fast on this day.
