5. Fasting (10/18)
[Machine] Some of the companions of the Prophet ﷺ informed me that they saw Abdullah ibn Hudhafah riding his camel during the days of Tashreeq, calling out to the people of Mina, "Do not fast during these days, for they are days of eating, drinking, and remembrance." He mentioned that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent him as a mu'adhdhin (caller to prayer) for that purpose. Abu Abdur Rahman al-Zuhri said he did not hear this from Mas'ud ibn al-Hakam.
[Machine] About some of their scholars from the companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , Abdullah ibn Hudhafah was sent to go around the people of Mina on a red camel, saying, "No one should fast during these days, as they are days for eating, drinking, and remembering Allah."
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent Abdullah bin Hudhafah to go around Mina and inform people not to fast on these days, as they are days for eating, drinking, and remembering Allah. Abu Abdur Rahman Saleh, who is Ibn Abi Al-Akhdar, said that this narration is inaccurate and we do not know anyone who mentioned it except Sa'id bin Al-Musayyib, who is not trustworthy and frequently makes mistakes in hadith narrations. The same applies to his counterpart, Muhammad bin Abi Hafsah, both of whom are weak narrators. Also, Ru'uh bin Ubada is not considered reliable according to us.
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent Abdullah bin Hudhafa, saying, "Indeed, these are days of eating, drinking, and remembering Allah" - meaning the days of Mina. Abu 'Abdur-Rahman said, "This Hadith has also been narrated by Yahya bin Sa'id from Yusuf bin Mas'ud bin Al-Hakam."
[Machine] She said, "While we were in Mina, a rider approached and I heard him calling out, 'These are the days of eating and drinking, as per the promise of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ .' I asked, 'Who is this?' He replied, 'Ali ibn Abi Talib.'"
5.116 [Machine] Mentioning the disagreement on ibn Ishaq in this narration.
It is as if I can see ʿAli bin Abi Talib ؓ , riding the white mule of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, when he stood at the mountain pass of the Ansar during the Farewell Pilgrimage and said: O people, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ says: ʿThese are not the days of fasting, rather they are days of eating, drinking and remembering Allah.” (Using translation from Aḥmad 708)

[Machine] It is as if I am looking at Ali ibn Abi Talib on the white riding animal of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , saying, "O people! Indeed, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'The days of Tashriq are days of eating and drinking, not days of fasting.'" Ibn al-Hadīth contradicted him.

Whilst we were in Mina, I saw ʿAli bin Abi Talib ؓ say: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “These days are for eating and drinking, so no one should fast these days.” And he went around to the people on his camel, shouting that, (Using translation from Aḥmad 567)

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ delivered a sermon on the days of Tashriq (11th, 12th, and 13th of Dhul-Hijjah) and said: “No one will enter Paradise but a Muslim soul, and these days are the days of eating and drinking.” (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 1720)
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ delivered a sermon during the days of Hajj and said, "Indeed, only a Muslim soul will enter Paradise, and these are days of eating and drinking."
[Machine] I heard the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , saying on the pulpit, "No one will enter Paradise except a Muslim, and these are the days of eating and drinking, the days of Tashreeq."
The Prophet [SAW] commanded him to call out on the days of At-Tashriq that no one would enter Paradise except a believer, and that these were the days of eating and drinking. (Using translation from Nasāʾī 4994)
[Machine] A man from the companions of the Prophet ﷺ narrated that the Prophet ﷺ sent Bashir bin Suhaim and ordered him to announce, "No one enters Paradise except a believing soul, and these are the days of eating and drinking, meaning the days of Tashriq."
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ ordered that during the days of Tashriq, it should be announced that no one will enter Paradise except a believer, and these are the days of eating and drinking. Qutaibah ibn Sa'id informed us of this story once again, saying that Hammad narrated to us from 'Amr from Nafi'yya that the Prophet ﷺ ordered a caller to be sent. Qutaibah ibn Sa'id informed us that Dawud narrated to us from 'Amr, saying that the Prophet ﷺ sent a man named Bashr to announce the days of Mina and spread the news.
[Machine] He invited a Bedouin to his food, and that was after the Day of Sacrifice by a day. So the Bedouin said, "I am fasting." He said, "I have heard Abdullah bin Amr say, 'I have heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbidding fasting on these days.'"
[Machine] "The Prophet ﷺ said, 'Indeed, these are days of eating and drinking,' referring to the days of Tashreeq."
[Machine] "To have heard it from the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , he said, 'Indeed, I heard it from the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ .'"
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ said, "The days of Tashriq are days of eating, drinking, and prayer, so no one should fast on them." Ibrahim ibn Muhajir differed from him (the Prophet) and narrated it from Abu Sha'tha from Ibn Umar.
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "These are days of feasting and remembrance," referring to the days of Tashreeq.

5.118 [Machine] The fasting of Muharram
the Messenger of Allah said: "The most virtuous fasting after the month of Ramadan is Allah's month Al-Muharram." (Using translation from Tirmidhī 740)
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was asked: "Which prayer is best after the obligatory prayers?" He replied, "The prayer in the middle of the night." He was asked: "Which fasting is best after Ramadan?" He replied, "The month of Allah, which you call Muharram."
the Messenger of Allah said: "The most virtuous fasting after the month of Ramadan is Allah's month Al-Muharram." (Using translation from Tirmidhī 740)
5.119 [Machine] The fast of Sha'ban
"I asked Aishah: 'Tell me about the fasting of the Messenger of Allah.' She said: 'he used to fast until we said: he is going to fast until we said: He is not going to fast. He never fasted any month more than Shaban. He used to fast (all) of Shaban except a little, he used to fast all of Shaban."' ' (Using translation from Nasāʾī 2179)
[Machine] Regarding the fasting of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , she said, "His most frequent fasting after the month of Ramadan was during the month of Sha'ban, either most of it or all of it."
"The month which the Messenger of Allah most liked to fast was Shaban; indeed he used to join it to Ramadan." (Using translation from Nasāʾī 2350)
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "When the middle of Shaban comes, stop fasting." Abu Abdullah Rahman told us that no one other than Alaa bin Abdullah bin Al-Rahman narrated this Hadith.

A woman came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said: My mother has died, and fasts of a month are due from her. Thereupon he said: Don't you see that if debt was due from her, would you not pay it? She said: Yes (I would pay on her behalf). Thereupon he said: The debt of Allah deserves its payment more than (the payment of anyone else). (Using translation from Muslim 1148a)
A man came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said: Messenger of Allah, my mother has died (in a state) that she had to observe fasts of a month (of Ramadan). Should I complete (them) on her behalf? thereupon he (the Holy Prophet) said: Would you not pay the debt if your mother had died (without paying it)? He said: Yes. He (the Holy Prophet) said: The debt of Allah deserves more that it should he paid. (Using translation from Muslim 1148b)

A woman came to the Prophet ﷺ and said (to him) that one month's fast was due from her mother who had died. May I fulfill them on her behalf? He (the prophet) said, "Do you think if she had a debt, would you fulfill it for her? So, the debt of Allah deserves to be fulfilled." Sulaiman narrated to me this hadith from Salamah bin Kuhayl, and Al-Hakam also narrated the same from Ibn Abbas.

He said, "Were you a debtor for your mother, would you have fulfilled her debt?" She said, "Yes." He said, "Then fast on behalf of your mother." Abu 'Abdur Rahman narrated it and Ayyub bin Musa narrated from 'Ata, from Ibn 'Abbas: "No one can fast on behalf of someone else."

The Prophet ﷺ as saying: If anyone dies when some fast is due from him (i.e. which he could not keep) his heir must fast on his behalf. Abu Dawud said: This applies to the fast which a man vows ; and this is the opinion of Ahmad b. Hanbal. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 2400)

He said, "Do not do so; Offer prayer at night and also sleep; Fast for a few days and give up fasting for a few days because your body has a right on you, and your eye has a right on you, and your guest has a right on you, and your wife has a right on you. I hope that you will have a long life, and it is sufficient for you to fast for three days a month as the reward of a good deed, is multiplied ten times, that means, as if you fasted the whole year." But as I insisted (on fasting more) so I was burdened. I said, "I can fast more than that." The Prophet ﷺ said, "Fast as Allah's prophet David used to fast." “I heard Abu hurairah say: ‘No, by the Lord of the Ka’bah! I did not say: “Whoever wakes up in a state of sexual impurity (and wants to fast) then he must not fast.” Muhammad ﷺ said it.’” (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 1702)
[Machine] "Break your fast, for indeed the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to order the breaking of the fast when a man becomes impure. Abdullah bin Abdullah said, 'I went to Abdullah ibn Umar and I mentioned to him what Abu Huraira advised me to do.' He said, 'I swear by Allah, if you break your fast, I will injure your neck. However, if it appears to you that you can fast another day, then do so.' However, Uqail ibn Khalid contradicted this and narrated it from Az-Zuhri, from Ubaydullah."
[Machine] That he washed and did not wake up until morning, so I met Abu Hurairah when I woke up, so I asked him. He said, "Break your fast, for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to command breaking the fast when a person woke up in a state of impurity." Ubaidullah said, "So I went to Abdullah and mentioned to him what Abu Hurairah had advised me. Abdullah said, "I swear by Allah, if you break your fast, I will hit you until I am satisfied. But if you think it is necessary to fast another day, then do so."
[Machine] He who wakes up in a state of impurity should not fast on that day. Aisha sent a message to him that she should not mention the Messenger of Allah ﷺ with such a thing. "So I bear witness for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ that he would wake up in a state of impurity from his family, then he would fast." Ibn Abbas said, he narrated it to me.
[Machine] I heard Abu Hurairah say, "Whoever has a wet dream or had sexual intercourse with his spouse at night and then dawn broke upon him and he did not perform the ritual bath (ghusl), then he should not fast." He further added, "Then I heard him mention that."
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to wake up in a state of sexual impurity without having had a wet dream, so he would perform ghusl (ritual bath) and then observe fasting for that day. Al-Qa'qa' ibn Hakim reported: I said to Abu Huraira, "Who informed you about this?" He said, "I was determined to meet him (the Prophet), so I met him and narrated the hadith. He said, 'I have not heard this from the Prophet ﷺ , but Fadl ibn Abbas informed me about it.' I said, 'Who informed you about it?' He replied, 'Ismail narrated it to us from Ayyub, from Ikrimah ibn Khalid, from Abu Bakr ibn Abdur Rahman ibn Al-Harith.' He said, 'I am most knowledgeable about this hadith among the people. It reached Marwan Ibn Al-Hakam that Abu Huraira narrated from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ that he said, 'Whoever wakes up in the morning in a state of sexual impurity should not fast that day.' So Marwan sent (someone) to 'A'ishah to ask her about that. I accompanied him and he asked her, and she said, 'The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to wake up in a state of sexual impurity without having had a wet dream, and he would then observe fasting for that day.' So he returned to Marwan and informed him. Al-Qa'qa' ibn Hakim said: "I asked Abu Huraira, 'Tell him (Marwan) about it.' He replied, 'It is my neighbor, and I dislike to meet him with something that he dislikes. I said, 'I urge you to meet him and inform him.' So he met him and narrated the hadith. The latter said, 'Fadl told me.' Abu Abdullah (i.e., Imam Ahmad) said: "Ahmad ibn Mani' said: 'Ismail narrated to us from Ayyub, from Ikrimah ibn Khalid, from Abu Bakr ibn Abdur Rahman ibn Al-Harith.'" 'Umar ibn Abu Bakr ibn Abdur Rahman disagreed with Fadl and Ikrimah.

[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ used to wake up in the morning with his head wet from semen without having had a wet dream, then he would fast. Abdullah bin Al-Rahman mentioned this to Marwan bin Al-Hakam, who said, "I swear to you, unless you go to Abu Hurairah and ask him about it." So Abdullah went to Abu Hurairah and informed him of this. Abu Hurairah said, "May Allah forgive you. He is my friend, and I do not like to contradict what he says." Abu Hurairah used to say, "Whoever has a wet dream or ejaculates during the night and then wakes up before sunrise should perform ghusl (ritual bath) and should not fast." Marwan said, "I am determined to go and ask him about it." So Abdullah bin Al-Rahman went and told Abu Hurairah about it. Abu Hurairah said, "Among us, Usamah bin Zaid told me this. Abu Abdullah Al-Rahman said, Abu Hazim and Ibn Juraij differed with Abdullah bin Amr bin Al-As about it in regard to Abdul Malik bin Abu Bakr."

I said to him, "Go and ask the wives of the Prophet ﷺ about it." So he went and I went along with him and he asked Um Salama and she replied, "The man who has a dream but does not take a bath, should not fast." Then he went to Aisha and she replied similarly. He then returned to Marwan and informed him about it. Marwan said to him, "Don't you know that everything told by Aisha is true?" The Prophet ﷺ said, "If I ever had a wet dream, I would take a bath before going to the mosque for the prayer."

[Machine] Abu Hurairah said: "Whoever wakes up in a state of janabah (ritual impurity after intercourse) should break his fast that day." Marwan said: "I swear by Allah, O Abdul-Rahman, you must go to Ummul Mu'mineen Aishah and Umm Salamah and ask them about this." So Abdul-Rahman went and I went with him until we entered upon Aishah. Abdul-Rahman greeted her and said: "O Mother of the Believers, we were with Marwan and he mentioned to him what Abu Hurairah said: 'Whoever wakes up in a state of janabah should break his fast that day.' Aishah said: 'I bear witness to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ that he used to wake up in a state of janabah due to intercourse, not due to a wet dream, and he would fast that day.' Then we left and went to Umm Salamah and asked her. She said the same as Aishah. Then we went to Marwan and Abdul-Rahman told him what they had said. Marwan said: 'I swear by Allah, O Abu Muhammad, you must ride my she-camel, for it is at the gate. Go to Abu Hurairah, for he is in his land in Al-'Aqiq, and inform him of that.' Abu Bakr said: Abdul-Rahman rode (the she-camel) and I rode with him until we reached Abu Hurairah. Abdul-Rahman spoke with him for a while, then he mentioned it to him. Abu Hurairah said: 'I have no knowledge about it, I was only told this by a narrator.' Abu Abdullah (Imam Ahmad) said: Abu Qilabah narrated from Abdul-Rahman bin Al-Harith that he informed Abu Hurairah about the statement of Aishah and Umm Salamah. Abu Hurairah said: 'That is what I thought, but it was not allowed for anyone to do it except him.'"
