5. Fasting
When the Prophet ﷺ came to Medina, he found the Jews observing fast on the day of 'Ashurah; so they were asked about it (by the Prophet). They said: This is a day on which Allah gave Moses domination over Pharaoh. We fast on it out of reverence to him. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: We have a closer connection with Moses than you have. He then gave orders that it should be observed. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 2444)
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ arrived in Medina and found the Jews fasting on the day of Ashura. He asked them, "What is this?" They replied, "This is the day on which Allah saved Musa (Moses) and drowned Pharaoh. So, Musa fasted out of gratitude to Allah, and we also fast on this day." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "We have more right to Musa and are closer to him than you are." So, he fasted on that day and commanded others to do so. [231] 2849 Isma'il ibn Ya'qub al-Harrani as-Sabihi reported to us, saying: Ibn Musa, the son of A'yan, reported to us, saying: My father reported to us from al-Harith, meaning the son of 'Umayr, from Ayyub, from Abdullah ibn Sa'id ibn Jubayr, from his father, from Ibn Abbas of similar account.
(The tribe of) Quraish used to fast on the day of Ashura' in the Pre-Islamic period, and then Allah's Apostle ordered (Muslims) to fast on it till the fasting in the month of Ramadan was prescribed; whereupon the Prophet ﷺ said, "He who wants to fast (on 'Ashura') may fast, and he who does not want to fast may not fast." (Using translation from Bukhārī 1893)
The Quraish used to fast on the day of 'Ashurah in pre Islamic days. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ would fast on it in pre-Islamic period. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to Medina, he fasted on it and commanded to fast on it. When the fast of Ramadan was prescribed, that became obligatory, and (fasting on) 'Ashurah was abandoned. He who wishes may fast on it and he who wishes may leave it. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 2442)
'A'isha (Allah be pleased with her) reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had ordered to observe fast (on 'Ashura) before the fasting in Ramadan was made obligatory. But when it became obligatory, then he who wished fasted on the day of Ashura, and he who wished did not observe it (on that day). (Using translation from Muslim 1125d)
“That was a day when the people of the Ignorance used to fast. So whoever among you wants to fast may do so, and whoever does not want to may leave it.” (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 1737)
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ ordered us to fast on Ashura before Ramadan arrived, but when Ramadan arrived, he did not order us or forbid us.
"We used to fast on 'Ashura and give Zakatul-Fitr, and when the command to fast in Ramadan was revealed, and the command to give Zakah was revealed, we were neither commanded to give it, nor told not to do so, and we used to do it." (Using translation from Nasāʾī 2506)
[Machine] Abdullah said, "We used to fast on Ashura, but when Ramadan came, we were not commanded to fast nor prohibited from it, and we continued to observe it."
[Machine] Abdullah said, "Today is a voluntary fast for me before Ramadan. If you wish to break your fast, break it."
