11. Fasting (9/14)
The Prophet ﷺ said, "Allah said: The Fast is for Me and I will give the reward for it, as he (the one who observes the fast) leaves his sexual desire, food and drink for My Sake. Fasting is a screen (from Hell) and there are two pleasures for a fasting person, one at the time of breaking his fast, and the other at the time when he will meet his Lord. And the smell of the mouth of a fasting person is better in Allah's Sight than the smell of musk." (See Hadith No. 128, Vol. 3). (Using translation from Bukhārī 7492)
“Every good deed of the son of Adam will be multiplied manifold. A good deed will be multiplied ten times up to as many as seven hundred times, or as much as Allah wills. Allah says: ‘Except for fasting, which is for Me and I shall reward for it. He gives up his desire and his food for My sake.’ The fasting person has two joys, one when he breaks his fast and another when he meets his Lord. The smell that comes from the mouth of a fasting person is better before Allah than the fragrance of musk.” (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 1638)
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Allah, the Exalted, said: 'Fasting is for Me and I reward it accordingly. For the fasting person, there are two joys: one at the time of breaking his fast and the other at the time of meeting his Lord. And the smell coming out from the mouth of a fasting person is more pleasant to Allah than the fragrance of musk.'"
[Machine] "The fasting person is not harmed by eating at night, but rather by eating during the day. For indeed, the moisture of the fasting person's lips is a light between their eyes on the Day of Judgment."
[Machine] O Abu Muhammad, in what the Prophet (PBUH) narrated from his Lord, every action of the son of Adam is for him except fasting for it is for Me and I will reward him for it. Ibn ‘Uyaynah said: This is from the most generous and firmest of narrations. When it is the Day of Judgment, Allah (SWT) will hold His servant accountable and settle all his injustices from his other actions, until nothing remains except fasting. Allah (SWT) will then take on what remains of his injustices and admit him into paradise through his fasting.
[Machine] If you fast, have your suhoor in the morning and do not have it at night, because the lips of the fasting person will not be dry at night except that they will be a light between his eyes on the Day of Resurrection. Abu Bakr ibn Al-Harith Al-Faqih informed us, Ali ibn Umar narrated to us, Abu Ubaid narrated to us, Abu Khurasan narrated to us, Abdul Samad narrated to us, Kaysan Abu Umar narrated to us, from Amr ibn Abdul Rahman, from Khubbab, from the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ with a similar narration. Ali said: Kaysan Abu Umar is not strong and whoever is between him and Ali is not known.
[Machine] "Do not neglect brushing your teeth before Asr prayer, for when you have prayed Asr, then throw it away. Indeed, I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, 'The smell of the mouth of a fasting person is sweeter to Allah than the fragrance of musk.'"
11.92 [Machine] The voluntary fasting and exiting it before completion
'A'isha, have you anything (to eat)? I said: 'Messenger of Allah, there is nothing with us. Thereupon he said: I am observing fast. She said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ went out, and there was a present, for us and (at the same time) some visitors dropped in. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came back, I said to him: Messenger of Allah, a present was given to us, (and in the meanwhile) there came to us visitors (a major Portion of it has been spent on them), but I have saved something for you. He said: What is it? I said: It is hais (a compound of dates and clarified butter). He said: Bring that. So I brought it to him and he ate it and then said: I woke up in the morning observing fast. Talha said: I narrated this hadith to Mujahid and he said: This (observing of voluntary fast) is like a person who sets apart Sadaqa out of his wealth. He may spend it if he likes, or he may retain it if he so likes. (Using translation from Muslim 1154a)
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ entered upon me and I said, "Indeed, we have hidden some barley for you." He said, "I had intended to fast, but bring it closer to me like this."
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ entered upon me and I said, "I have hidden some barley for you." He said, "I intended to fast, but bring it to me and I will make up for the day (by giving it in charity)." Abu Al-Hasan Al-Dariquti (may Allah have mercy on him) transmitted this statement to Muhammad bin Amr bin Abbas Al-Bahili, claiming that no one else had reported it in this wording and it was not narrated consecutively on his authority. However, this is incorrect, as Ibn Uyaynah reported it towards the end of his life when he was recognized by the scholars of hadith as not being reliable (untrustworthy). Abu Ishaq Ibrahim bin Muhammad Al-Armi reported this, narrating from Shafi'i bin Muhammad, who reported from Abu Ja'far bin Salamah, who reported from Al-Muzani, who reported from Al-Shafi'i, who mentioned this hadith in the same wording.
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ entered upon me one day and said, "Do you have anything?" I said, "No." He said, "Then I will fast." She (the narrator) said, "He entered upon me another day and said, 'Do you have anything?' I said, 'Yes.' He said, 'Then break your fast, even if you had intended to fast, and this is an authentic chain of narrators."
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ befriended Salman and Abu Darda. Salman came to visit Abu Darda, and he found Umm Darda dressed in shabby clothes. He asked her, "What is wrong, O Umm Darda?" She replied, "Your brother Abu Darda stays up at night and fasts during the day, and he has no need for anything in this world." Abu Darda then came and welcomed Salman and brought him food. Salman said to him, "Eat," but Abu Darda replied, "I am fasting." Salman said, "I swear to you that I will not eat until you eat." So Abu Darda ate with him and then spent the night with him. When it was night time and Abu Darda wanted to get up, Salman stopped him and said, "O Abu Darda, your body has rights over you, your Lord has rights over you, and your family has rights over you. So fast and break your fast, pray and sleep with your family, and give everyone their rights." When it was dawn, Salman said, "Now you can get up if you wish." They both got up, performed ablution, prayed, and then went to the mosque. Abu Darda wanted to inform the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about what Salman had advised him, so he told him about it. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him, "O Abu Darda, your body has rights over you just as Salman has told you."

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ entered upon me on Friday while I was fasting, and he asked: "Did you fast yesterday?" I said: "No." He asked: "Will you fast tomorrow?" I said: "No." He then said: "Then break your fast."
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ entered upon me, and asked for water to drink. So, I gave him the container and I was fasting. I drank from the same container that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ drank from. I said, "O Messenger of Allah, did I do something wrong? I am unsure if I did the right thing or not. You gave me your container while I was fasting, and I did not want to return it to you." He asked, "Did you do it voluntarily or was it a makeup fast for Ramadan?" I said, "Voluntarily." He said, "The one who fasts voluntarily has the choice to either continue fasting or break it."
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to say: "The voluntary fasting person is the master of his own self. He may fast if he wishes or break the fast if he wishes."
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ brought a drink on the day of the conquest of Mecca and he drank from it. Then, he passed it to me and I drank, although I was fasting. I disliked to refuse the favor of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , so I said, "O Messenger of Allah, I was fasting and I disliked to refuse your favor." He asked me, "Did you have anything to make up for your fast?" I replied, "No." He said, "Then, it will not harm you." This is a narration from Ibrahim. And in the narration of Abu Al-Walid, it is reported from Harun, the son of the son of Umm Hanee, who said that Umm Hanee claimed that she heard from her that the Prophet ﷺ asked her the same question: "Did you have anything to make up for your fast?" And she replied, "No." He said, "Then, it will not harm you." Abu Al-Walid reported to us this narration from his book.
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ entered upon her, so she gave him a drink. He drank and then she gave him another drink. She said, "O Messenger of Allah, I was fasting." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "The voluntary faster is trustworthy or the ruler of himself. If he wishes, he fasts and if he wishes, he breaks the fast." Shu'bah said: So I said to Ja'dah, "Did you hear it from 'Um Hani'?" He said, "Our family and Abu Salih, the slave of 'Um Hani', informed me about 'Um Hani'."
On the days of the conquest of Mecca, when Mecca was captured, Fatimah came and sat on the left side of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and Umm Hani was on his right side. A slave-girl brought a vessel which contained some drink; she gave it to him and he drank of it. He then gave it to Umm Hani who drank of it. She said: Messenger of Allah, I have broken my fast; I was fasting. He said to her: Were you making atonement for something? She replied: No. He said: Then it does not harm you if it was voluntary (fast). (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 2456)
[Machine] If you wake up intending to fast, then you are in one of two conditions: if you wish, you can observe fasting; and if you wish, you can break your fast.
[Machine] That a person should break their voluntary fast and a parable for that is a man who performed the Tawaf seven times but did not complete it, so he will have the reward of what he intended, or he prayed a unit of prayer but did not pray another, so he will have the reward of what he intended.
[Machine] Abu al-Abbas narrated that al-Rabi' told al-Shafi'i who narrated from Muslim and Abd al-Majid, who narrated from Ibn Jurayj, who narrated from Amr bin Dinar, who said: Ibn Abbas used to not find any difficulty in fasting voluntary fasts without having breakfast.

[Machine] Abu al-Abbas reported that al-Rabi' told al-Shafi'i, who told 'Abd al-Majid, who narrated from Ibn Jurayj, who narrated from Abu al-Zubayr, who reported from Jabir ibn Abdullah that he did not consider eating before the optional fasting to be forbidden.

[Machine] The fasting person breaks their fast with the sighting of the midday sun, and this was narrated from other sources as well, although its authenticity is not confirmed.

[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ said, "The one fasting with dates is like the one fasting with half of the day." And Abu Al-Hasan Al-'Alawi narrated to us, who was informed by Abu Al-Fadl, who was narrated by Ibrahim, who was informed by 'Awn ibn 'Umarah, who was narrated by Ja'far ibn Al-Zubair, from Al-Qasim, from Abu Umamah, from the Prophet ﷺ , a similar narration was mentioned by 'Awn ibn 'Umarah Al-'Anbari, who is weak.

[Machine] I heard my Khalil Abu Al-Qasim (Peace be upon him) say that for voluntary fasting, it is recommended to fast until halfway through the day. And Ali ibn Ahmad ibn Abdan informed us that Ahmad ibn Ubayd Al-Saffar told us that Muhammad ibn Al-Faraj Al-Azraq mentioned it with its chain of narrators, similar to Ibrahim ibn Muzahim and Sari' ibn Nabhana, who are both unknown.

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ entered upon me, and I offered him a drink. He drank it or said he asked for a drink and drank, then he handed it to me and I drank. I said, "O Messenger of Allah, I was fasting, but I did not want to refuse your cup." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "If it is a fast from Ramadan, then fast a day in its place. And if it is a voluntary fast, then if you wish, complete it, and if you wish, break it."
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ entered upon me on the day of the conquest of Mecca and handed me his drink. I drank it and said, "O Messenger of Allah, I was fasting and I disliked to return your cup." He said, "If it is a make up fast from Ramadan, then fast one day instead. And if it is voluntary, then if you wish, complete it, and if you wish, do not complete it."

[Machine] He said: "I prepared food for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he and his companions came to me. When the food was placed, a man from the people said, 'Indeed, I am fasting.' So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Your brother has invited you and has made efforts for you, so break your fast and fast another day if you wish.' This was narrated through another chain of transmission from Abu Sa'id Al-Khudri, and we have mentioned it in Al-Khilafiyat."

[Machine] Hafsah and Aisha woke up as voluntary fasters, so they were given food which they broke their fast with. Then the Prophet ﷺ entered upon them. Aisha said, then Hafsah said, "She preceded me in speaking." And Hafsah was the daughter of her father. "O Messenger of Allah, I and Aisha woke up as voluntary fasters and were given food which we broke our fast with." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Make up for it on another day." This is the end of the narration.
[Machine] Hafsah and I were fasting when food was presented to us, and we desired it so we ate it. Then the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , came to us and Hafsah quickly covered me, as she was her father's daughter. She narrated the incident to him, and the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , said, "Make up for this day by fasting another day."
[Machine] She said, "Haafsa and I were fasting in the morning and a gift was given to us, so we ate it. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to us and Haafsa informed him. She was the daughter of her father, so she mentioned that to him. He said, "Make up for that day in place of it, and do the same."
[Machine] I and Hafsah became fasting, and food was gifted to us. The food was precious, so we ate from it. Then the Prophet ﷺ entered upon us, and Hafsah started to rush me. She was the daughter of her father. She said, "O Messenger of Allah, we became fasting, and food was gifted to us, so we ate from it." The Prophet ﷺ smiled and said, "Fast another day in its place." Sufyan said, "They asked Az-Zuhri while I was present, 'Is it from Urwah?' He said, 'No.'" And Abu Al-Husayn Ibn Al-Fadl Al-Qattan informed us that Abdullah Ibn Ja'far narrated to us, Yahya Ibn Suwayd narrated to us, Ya'qub Ibn Sufyan narrated to us, Abu Bakr Al-Humaydi narrated to us, Sufyan said, "I heard Az-Zuhri narrating from A'ishah. So, they asked Az-Zuhri, 'Is it from Urwah?' He said, 'No, it was when he was leaving the gathering, and the prayer was established.' Sufyan said, 'I heard Salih Ibn Abi Al-Akhdar narrating to us from Az-Zuhri, from Urwah. Az-Zuhri said, 'It is not from Urwah, so I thought that Salih had come before Al-Ardh. Abu Bakr Al-Humaydi informed me, 'More than one person narrated to me from Ma'mar that he said about this Hadith, 'If it was from Urwah, I would not have forgotten it.' These are the two sons of Jurayj and Sufyan Ibn 'Uyaynah who witnessed Az-Zuhri, and they were two witnesses of 'Adl (honesty) that he did not hear it from Urwah. So, how can it be valid?" Abu 'Isa At-Tirmidhi said, "I asked Muhammad Ibn Ismail Al-Bukhari about this Hadith, and he said, 'The Hadith of Az-Zuhri from Urwah from A'ishah is not authentic.' And Muhammad Ibn Yahya Az-Zuhli said the same and presented the story of Ibn Jurayj and Sufyan Ibn 'Uyaynah and the transmission of the Hadith from Az-Zuhri among the Imams. And this Hadith was transmitted from Jurayj Ibn Hazim from Yahya Ibn Sa'id from 'Amrah from A'ishah, and Jarir Ibn Hazim denied it and said that Jarir used to narrate from conjecture. Abu 'Abdullah Al-Hafiz informed me that Muhammad Ibn Mudhaffar Al-Hafiz narrated to me that Abu Al-'Abbas Muhammad Ibn Musa Al-Khallal narrated to me that Ahmad Ibn Mansur Al-Ramadi said, 'I said to 'Ali Ibn Al-Madinah, 'O father of Al-Hasan, do you preserve from Yahya Ibn Sa'id from 'Amrah from A'ishah?' He said, 'A'ishah and Hafsah became fasting, and said to me, 'Who narrated this to you?' I said, 'Ibn Wahb from Jarir Ibn Hazim from Yahya Ibn Sa'id.' He laughed and said, 'A person like you says such a thing!' Hammaad Ibn Zaid narrated to us from Yahya Ibn Sa'id from Az-Zuhri that A'ishah and Hafsah became fasting, and it was narrated from another angle from 'Urwah from A'ishah."

[Machine] Yes, they broke their fast and then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ entered and she said to him, "O Messenger of Allah, we have been given a gift, so we desired it and broke our fast." He said, "It's okay, you both fast another day in place of it." This narration was transmitted by a group from Ibn Wahb, and some of them transmitted it from Abu Zumayl, and some of them did not mention Urwah in their chain of transmission. 8371 Abu Sa'd al-Malini informed us, Abu Ahmad Abdallah ibn Adi al-Hafiz said, Zumayl ibn Abbas narrated from Urwah, and Ibn al-Had heard from him, but it is not known that Zumayl heard from Urwah, nor does the argument hold. I heard Ibn Hammad mention it from al-Bukhari, and the Shaykh mentioned it from other aspects, from Aisha, that nothing from that is valid, as I have explained its weakness in the Khilafiyyat.

11.95 [Machine] Prohibition of Intimacy during Fasting
[Machine] It was narrated that the Prophet ﷺ forbade prolonging the sit-in after a meal. Some people said, "You always stay seated to chat after eating." He replied, "I am not like you. I stay seated to be fed and given drink until I have finished reciting the hadith of Yahya bin Yahya."
[Machine] That the Messenger of Allah ﷺ continued to fast in Ramadan and prohibited them from breaking their fasts. It was said to him, "You continue to fast?" He said, "Indeed, I am not like you. I am fed and given to drink."
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , said: Beware of excessive companionship. They said: But you keep company with people, O Messenger of Allah! He said: I am not like you. My Lord feeds me and gives me drink. So, engage yourselves in activities that you are capable of.
Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade Al-Wisal in fasting. So, one of the Muslims said to him, "But you practice Al- Wisal. O Messenger of Allah ﷺ!" The Prophet ﷺ replied, "Who amongst you is similar to me? I am given food and drink during my sleep by my Lord." So, when the people refused to stop Al-Wisal (fasting continuously), the Prophet ﷺ fasted day and night continuously along with them for a day and then another day and then they saw the crescent moon (of the month of Shawwal). The Prophet ﷺ said to them (angrily), "If It (the crescent) had not appeared, I would have made you fast for a longer period." That was as a punishment for them when they refused to stop (practicing Al-Wisal). (Using translation from Bukhārī 1965)
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ continued his fast until the end of the month, and the people also continued their fast. When the Prophet ﷺ heard about this, he said, "If the month was extended for us, I would have continued fasting, leaving those who delve deep in worship amazed. You are not like me, for I am being fed and given drink by my Lord."
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ forbade them from being together as a mercy for them. They said, "Indeed, you do not need it." He said, "I am not like you. Indeed, my Lord feeds me and gives me drink."
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ as saying: Do not observe perpetual fasting. If any of you wants to observe perpetual fast, he should observe it until the dawn. They (the people) asked: You observe perpetual fast ? He replied: My position is not like that of yours. There is One Who gives me to eat, and there is One who gives me to drink. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 2361)

[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ was asked about fasting on the day of Arafah. He said, "It expiates the sins of the previous year and the coming year."
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ said: The fasting of the Day of Arafah is an expiation for the sins of the previous year and the coming year, and the fasting of the Day of Ashura is an expiation for the sins of the previous year.
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was asked about fasting on the day of Ashura, and he said, "It expiates the sins of the previous year." He was also asked about fasting on the day of Arafah, and he said, "It expiates the sins of the previous year and the sins of the coming year." Abu Muhammad Abdullah Ibn Yahya Al-Sukkari from Baghdad told us that Ismail Al-Saffar narrated to us, and he was informed by Ahmad Ibn Mansur, who was informed by Abdul Razzaq, who was informed by Al-Thawri, who informed me, that Mujahid mentioned it.
[Machine] "On the authority of the Prophet ﷺ , he said: Fasting on the Day of Arafah expiates the sins of two years, one before it and one after it, and fasting on the Day of Ashura expiates the sins of one year. Abu Al-Hassan Al-Muqri narrated to us, who informed us of Hasan bin Muhammad bin Ishaq, who narrated to us from Yusuf bin Ya'qub, who narrated to us from Abu Al-Rabi', who narrated to us from Jurayr, who mentioned it as 8383. Al-Thawri narrated it from Mansur, from Abu Al-Khalil, from Harmala Al-Shaibani, from Mawla Abu Qatadah, from Abu Qatadah. Abu Hamid Al-Mihrajani informed us, who narrated it from Abu Al-Abbas Al-Asamm, who narrated it from Al-Hasan bin Ali bin Affan, who narrated it from Abu Dawud Al-Hafari, from Sufyan, and he mentioned it."
11.97 [Machine] The choice for the pilgrim in exempting the fasting of the Day of Arafah
[Machine] They camped near her on the day of Arafah, in the presence of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Some of them said, "He is fasting," and some of them said, "He is not fasting." So Umm Al-Fadl sent a cup of milk to him while he was standing in Arafah on a camel, and he drank it. And Abu Abdullah Al-Hafiz informed us that Muhammad bin Ya'qub Al-Shaybani narrated to us from Muhammad bin Abdul Salam and Hasan bin Abdul Samad, they said: Yahya bin Yahya said: I read it from Malik and he mentioned it.
[Machine] "She said, 'Indeed, people have complained about the fasting of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on the Day of Arafa, so Maymuna sent him a dish while he was standing in his designated place, and he drank from it while the people were watching.'"
[Machine] That the Messenger of Allah ﷺ broke his fast at Arafah, and likewise
[Machine] That the Messenger of Allah ﷺ broke his fast at Arafat, and Umm al-Fadl brought him milk and he drank it.
[Machine] So he informed us that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade fasting on the day of Arafah at Arafah.
