11. Fasting
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , went out to Mecca in the year of the conquest during Ramadan. He fasted until he reached Kadeed and then he broke his fast. The people broke their fast with him and they followed the most recent command of the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ .
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ left Medina in Ramadan with ten thousand Muslims. This happened after he had been in Medina for eight and a half years. He traveled to Mecca with those Muslims, and they fasted until they reached Al-Kadeed, which is between Usfan and Qudayd. Then, the Prophet and the Muslims with him broke their fast. They did not fast for the rest of Ramadan. Al-Zuhri said, "Breaking the fast was the last thing to be commanded. It was only done based on the orders of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ . Therefore, the last thing is taken as the final ruling." Al-Zuhri also said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ reached Mecca at the beginning of the thirteenth night of Ramadan."
I said: Messenger of Allah. I am a master of mounts and I use them ! I myself travel on them and I rent them. This month, that is, Ramadan, happend to come to me (while I am on a journey), and I find myself strong enough (to fast) as I am young, and I find that it is easier for me to fast than to postpone it, and i becomes debt due from me. Does it bring me more reward, Messenger of Allah, if I fast, or if I break ? He replied: Whichever you like, Hamzah. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 2403)
[Machine] And by Allah, I have seen something that I did not think I would ever see, that a people deviated from the guidance of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and his companions. They said this to those who were fasting. Then at that moment, he said, "O Allah, bring me to You." Al-Layth said, "The matter that people agreed upon is that they should not shorten the prayer or break their fast except within a distance of four buruds (a measurement) every twelve miles." The Sheikh said, "We have narrated in the book of prayer what indicates this from Abdullah Ibn Abbas and Abdullah Ibn Umar. And what we have narrated from Dihyah al-Kalbi, if it is authentic, it is as if he intended by his statement 'deviated from the guidance of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and his companions' in accepting the permission (rukhsah), not in determining the distance of the journey in which the person breaks his fast. And Allah knows best."
Ibn 'Umar used to go out to al-Ghabah (jungle), but he neither broke his fast, nor shortened his prayer. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 2414)
