11. Fasting
[Machine] "O Messenger of Allah, should I fast while traveling even though I used to fast a lot?" The Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied, "If you wish, then fast. But if you wish, then break your fast."
Hamzat al-Aslami asked the Prophet ﷺ: Messenger of Allah, I am a man who keeps perpetual fast, may I fast while on a journey? He replied: Fast if you like, or break your fast if you like. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 2402)
[Machine] He said to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ : "I find myself capable of fasting while traveling. Is there any sin upon me?" The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "It is a concession from Allah, the Blessed and Exalted. Whoever takes it, it is good for him. And whoever prefers to fast, there is no sin upon him." Abu Bakr ibn al-Hasan al-Qadi and Abu Zakariya ibn Abu Ishaq al-Muzakki informed us, they said: Abu al-Abbas informed us, he said: Bahr ibn Nasr said: It was recited to Ibn Wahb that Amr ibn al-Harith informed him about it in the same manner.
[Machine] Abu Amr Al-Adibi informed us that Abu Bakr Al-Isma'ili informed us that Abu Ya'la reported to us that Abu Khaythamah reported to us from Jarir, from Mansur, from Mujahid, from Tawus, from Ibn Abbas, who said: "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ traveled during Ramadan and fasted until he reached Usfan. Then he called for a container of water and drank it during the day for the people to see, and he broke his fast until he reached Makkah." Ibn Abbas used to say: "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to fast while traveling, but he also used to break his fast. So whoever wished, would fast, and whoever wished, would break their fast."
[Machine] We traveled with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ during Ramadan, and the fasting person did not blame the one who broke their fast, nor did the one who broke their fast blame the fasting person. This is the wording of the hadith of Abu Abdullah, and in the narration of Abu Al-Husayn, some of us were fasting and some of us broke their fast, and the fasting person did not blame the one who broke their fast, nor did the one who broke their fast blame the fasting person.
We travelled with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ during the month of Ramadan, but neither the observer of the fast found fault with the breaker of the fast, nor the breaker of the fast found fault with the observer of the fast. (Using translation from Muslim 1118a)
[Machine] He informed me that the companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to travel and the fasting person would not criticize the one who breaks the fast, and the one who breaks the fast would not criticize the fasting person. So, I met Ibn Abi Mulaikah and he informed me about Aisha with a similar narration.
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ mentioned that they were on a journey where the person who was fasting would continue to fast, and the person who was breaking their fast would continue to do so, without any criticism or judgement towards each other.
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ fasted during Ramadan while he was traveling, and he also encountered Ramadan while traveling and broke his fast.
[Machine] Whoever fasts Ramadan while traveling, should make up for it. I asked Abu Qirsaafa, a companion of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, he said, "If I were to fast and continue fasting until ten days had passed, I would not make up for it." And it was narrated from Abdurrahman ibn Awf that he said, "The fasting person while traveling is like someone who breaks his fast while in a settled place." This narration is supported, but the chain of transmission is weak.
