15. Chapter of Ṣād (Male) (2/19)
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent me to announce: "Do not throw stones in the jar."
[Machine] I came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while he was resting in the mosque on a mat made of palm leaves. So I said to him, "O Messenger of Allah, I have come to seek knowledge." He said, "Welcome, seeker of knowledge. The seeker of knowledge is surrounded by angels and they shade him with their wings. Then some angels ride on top of others until they reach the lowest heaven due to their love for what he seeks. So what have you come to seek?" I said, "Safwan said, O Messenger of Allah, we continue to travel between Mecca and Medina, so guide us regarding wiping over the two socks." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him, "Three days for the traveler and one day and one night for the resident."
[Machine] While the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was on a journey, a man came to him and said, "O Muhammad!" They said, "Lower your voice." He said, "O Messenger of Allah, the man loves the people but has not seen them." He said, "A person will be with those whom he loves." Then the man asked him about wiping over the two socks. He said, "Three days and nights for the traveler, and one day and night for the resident, without removing it except for sexual impurity." Then he asked him about repentance, and he said, "Repentance has a gate in the west, the distance of seventy or forty years, and it will remain like that until some of the signs of your Lord appear, such as the rising of the sun from its setting place."
[Machine] Indeed, whatever He does, no one else can do except for Him. Whenever you make wudu, the angels spread their wings in approval of what you are doing. I said, "O Messenger of Allah, I have come to ask you about wiping over the socks." He said, "Indeed, I asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ if I could wipe over the socks, and he said, 'Yes, there are three things for the traveler that should not be removed: urine, feces, and sleep. And for the resident, one day.'"

There lived a king before you and he had a (court) magician. As he (the magician) grew old, he said to the king: I have grown old, send some young boy to me so that I should teach him magic. He (the king) sent to him a young man so that he should train him (in magic). And on his way (to the magician) he (the young man) found a monk sitting there. He (the young man) listened to his (the monk's) talk and was impressed by it. It became his habit that on his way to the magician he met the monk and set there and he came to the magician (late). He (the magician) beat him because of delay. He made a complaint of that to the monk and he said to him: When you feel afraid of the magician, say: Members of my family had detained me. And when you feel afraid of your family you should say: The magician had detained me. It so happened that there came a huge beast (of prey) and it blocked the way of the people, and he (the young boy) said: I will come to know today whether the magician is superior or the monk is superior. He picked up a stone and said: O Allah, if the affair of the monk is dearer to Thee than the affair of the magician, cause death to this animal so that the people should be able to move about freely. He threw that stone towards it and killed it and the people began to move about (on the path freely). He (the young man) then came to that monk and Informed him and the monk said: Sonny, today you are superior to me. Your affair has come to a stage where I find that you would be soon put to a trial, and in case you are put to a trial don't give my clue. That young man began to treat the blind and those suffering from leprosy and he in fact began to cure people from (all kinds) of illness. When a companion of the king who had gone blind heard about him, he came to him with numerous gifts and said: If you cure me all these things collected together here would be yours. Be said: I myself do not cure anyone. It is Allah Who cures and if you affirm faith in Allah, I shall also supplicate Allah to cure you. He affirmed his faith in Allah and Allah cured him and he came to the king and sat by his side as he used to sit before. The king said to him: Who restored your eyesight? He said: My Lord. Thereupon he said: It means that your Lord is One besides me. He said: My Lord and your Lord is Allah, so he (the king) took hold of him and tormented him till he gave a clue of that boy. The young man was thus summoned and the king said to him: O boy, it has been conveyed to me that you have become so much proficient in your magic that you cure the blind and those suffering from leprosy and you do such and such things. Thereupon he said: I do not cure anyone; it is Allah Who cures, and he (the king) took hold of him and began to torment him. So he gave a clue of the monk. The monk was thus summoned and it was said to him: You should turn back from your religion. He, however, refused to do so. He (ordered) for a saw to be brought (and when it was done) he (the king) placed it in the middle of his head and tore it into parts till a part fell down. Then the courtier of the king was brought and it was said to him: Turn back from your religion. Arid he refused to do so, and the saw was placed in the midst of his head and it was torn till a part fell down. Then that young boy was brought and it was said to him: Turn back from your religion. He refused to do so and he was handed over to a group of his courtiers. And he 'said to them: Take him to such and such mountain; make him climb up that mountain and when you reach its top (ask him to renounce his faith) but if he refuses to do so, then throw him (down the mountain). So they took him and made him climb up the mountain and he said: O Allah, save me from them (in any way) Thou likest and the mountain began to quake and they all fell down and that person came walking to the king. The king said to him: What has happened to your companions? He said: Allah has saved me from them. He again handed him to some of his courtiers and said: Take him and carry him in a small boat and when you reach the middle of the ocean (ask him to renounce) his religion, but if he does not renounce his religion throw him (into the water). So they took him and he said: O Allah, save me from them and what they want to do. It was quite soon that the boat turned over and they were drowned and he came walking to the king, and the king said to him: What has happened to your companions? He said: Allah has saved me from them, and he said to the king: You cannot kill me until you do what I ask you to do. And he said: What is that? He said: You should gather people in a plain and hang me by the trunk (of a tree). Then take hold of an arrow from the quiver and say: In the name of Allah, the Lord of the young boy; then shoot an arrow and if you do that then you would be able to kill me. So he (the king) called the people in an open plain and tied him (the boy) to the trunk of a tree, then he took hold of an arrow from his quiver and then placed the arrow in the bow and then said: In the name of Allah, the Lord of the young boy; he then shot an arrow and it bit his temple. He (the boy) placed his hands upon the temple where the arrow had bit him and he died and the people said: We affirm our faith in the Lord of this young man, we affirm our faith in the Lord of this young man, we affirm our faith in the Lord of this young man. The courtiers came to the king and it was said to him: Do you see that Allah has actually done what you aimed at averting. They (the people) have affirmed their faith in the Lord. He (the king) commanded ditches to be dug at important points in the path. When these ditches were dug, and the fire was lit in them it was said (to the people): He who would not turn back from his (boy's) religion would be thrown in the fire or it would be said to them to jump in that. (The people courted death but did not renounce religion) till a woman came with her child and she felt hesitant in jumping into the fire and the child said to her: 0 mother, endure (this ordeal) for it is the Truth. (Using translation from Muslim 3005)

[Machine] I cooked food for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, then I went to him while he was sitting with a group. I stood in front of him and he motioned to me, so I motioned back to him. He asked, "And these people?" I replied, "No." So he remained silent. I returned to my place, and when he looked at me, I motioned to him again. He asked, "And these people?" Again, I replied, "No." He did this two or three times, and then I said, "Yes, these people." And it was only a small amount that I made for him. He came and they came with him, and they ate, and I consider it a favor from him.

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "The virtue of a man's prayer in his house over his prayer where people can see it is like the virtue of the obligatory prayer over the optional prayer."

He then asked, "Who among you is the companion of the jinn?" We said, "This is he." He said, "Indeed, he was one of the last nine believers who came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to listen to the Qur'an."

[Machine] "He (referring to the person mentioned earlier) approached Safwan bin Assal Al-Muradi, one of the companions of the Prophet ﷺ , and he asked them, 'What is your need?' They replied, 'We have left our homes in search of knowledge.' He said, 'Indeed, whoever leaves their home in search of knowledge, the angels spread their wings for the seeker and the scholar.' I asked him about wiping over socks, and he replied, 'Yes, the Prophet ﷺ was asked about it, and he allowed a traveler to wipe over their socks for three days and nights, and for a resident, one day and night, except for when they are in a state of sexual impurity, but it includes urination, defecation, and sleep.'"

'When we were traveling, Messenger of Allah would order us not to remove our Khuff for three days and nights, except for Janabah, but not for defecating, urinating, and sleep." (Using translation from Tirmidhī 96)
[Machine] "What brings you?" I said, "I have come seeking knowledge." He said, "Indeed, I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying, 'Whenever a person goes out of his house in search of knowledge, the angels lower their wings in approval of what he is doing.'" I said, "I have come to ask you about wiping over the socks." He said, "Yes, I was in the army that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent, and he commanded us to wipe over our socks when they are pure, three times when we are traveling, and one night when we are staying. We do not remove them except from sexual impurity." He said, "And I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying, 'Indeed, for Maghrib (sunset) there is an open door for repentance, the distance of seventy years, which is not closed until the sun rises from its setting.'"
“I came to Safwan bin ʿAssal Al Muradi to ask him about wiping over the Khuff, so he said: ‘What has brought you, O Zirr?’ So I said: ‘The desire for knowledge.’ So he said: ‘Indeed, the angels lower their wings for the seeker of knowledge, out of pleasure with what he is seeking.’ So I said: ‘Indeed there is some doubt in my chest concerning wiping over the Khuff after defecation and urination, and you were a man from the Companions of the Prophet ﷺ, so I came to you to ask you: Have you heard him ﷺ mention anything concerning that?’ He said: ‘Yes, he ﷺ used to order us, that when we were travelers’ - or - ‘in travel, to not remove our Khuff for three days and nights except, from sexual impurity, but not from defecation, urination, and sleep.’” He said: “Have you heard him ﷺ mention anything concerning love?” He said: “Yes. We were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on a journey when a Bedouin with a loud voice called upon him (saying): ‘O Muhammad!’ So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ responded to him with a voice similar to him (saying): ‘Come.’ So we said to him: ‘Lower your voice for you are with the Prophet ﷺ, and you have been prohibited from this.’ He said: ‘By Allah, I will not lower (my voice).’ The Bedouin said: ‘A man loves a people but he is not with them (in terms of deeds)?’ He ﷺ said: ‘A man is with whomever he loves on the Day of Judgement.’” So he did not cease talking with us, until he mentioned a gate in the direction of the west with the width of seventy years journey - or a rider would travel its width - for forty or seventy years.” Sufyan (one of the narrators) said: “In the direction of Ash-Sham, Allah created it the Day He created the heavens and the earth, open - that is, for repentance. It shall not be locked until the sun rises through it.” (Using translation from Tirmidhī 3535)

[Machine] "The Prophet ﷺ commanded that wiping over the two socks should be for three days and nights for the traveler, and for the resident it should be for one day and one night."

[Machine] "Yes, the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , commanded us that when we are on a journey or traveling, we should not remove or take off our socks for three days and nights, even for relieving oneself, urinating, or sleeping, except for sexual impurity. And indeed, a man from the people of the desert came to the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , and started calling him loudly with a strong voice, saying, 'O Muhammad! O Muhammad!' So we said to him, 'Woe to you, lower your voice or lower it in volume, for you have been prohibited from doing this.' He said, 'No, by Allah, until he hears me.' So the Prophet, ﷺ , said, 'Leave him.' Then he said, 'What do you think about a man who loves a people but does not join them?' He said, 'A person is with the one whom he loves.'"
[Machine] What brought you here?" I said, "To seek knowledge." He said, "Shall I not give you glad tidings?" I said, "Of course." So he raised the hadith and said, "Verily, the angels lower their wings for the seeker of knowledge, pleased with what he seeks." Then he asked him about wiping over the footwear, so he said, "I heard the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, say: 'The traveler wipes over his footwear for three days and nights from urine, feces, or sleep, but not from sexual impurity.' Then he began to inform us, and he said, 'While we were with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, on a journey when a Bedouin called out to him with a loud voice, saying, 'O Muhammad, O Muhammad, O Muhammad!' So I said to him, 'Lower your voice, for you have been commanded not to raise your voice.' So the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, responded to him according to what he had heard from him, saying, 'Here I am.' Then he asked him about love for a people when he is encompassed by them, so the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, 'A person is with those whom he loves.' Then he began to inform us, and he said, 'The gate of repentance is open from the west, its width is the travel of seventy years, and it will not be closed until the sun rises from its direction.' Then he recited this verse, 'Do they await except that the angels should come to them?'"

[Machine] I participated in the caliphate of Uthman. The reason for my visit was to meet the companions of Muhammad ﷺ . I met Safwan ibn Asaal al-Muradi and asked him if he had met the Messenger of Allah ﷺ . He said yes and that he accompanied him in twelve battles. I asked him about wiping over the socks, and he replied that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to command us, when we were traveling, to wipe over our socks for three days and nights, whether we had urinated, defecated, or slept. But as for impurity due to sexual defilement, he did not mention it. One night, while the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was sitting, he mentioned a gate from the west to the east, the width of which is seventy years, open for repentance and will not be closed until the sun rises from its opposite direction. Then a man came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and called out to him in a loud voice, saying, "O Muhammad, do you see the man who loves the people but cannot catch up with them?" The Prophet ﷺ replied in a similar tone, saying, "A person is with the one he loves."

The Prophet ﷺ said: The time limit for wiping over the socks for a traveller is three days (and three nights) and for a resident it is one day and one night. Abu Dawud said: Another version adds: Had we requested him to extend (the period of wiping), he would have extended. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 157)
[Machine] I heard the Prophet ﷺ say, "For the traveler, if he enters his two feet while they are pure, he should wipe on them for three days and nights, and he should not remove them from any defecation or urination except from sexual impurity."
[Machine] "What brought you here?" I said, "Seeking knowledge." He said, "No Muslim seeks knowledge except that the angels open their wings, pleased with what he is doing." I said to him, "You are a companion of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and I have something regarding the masah on the two khuffain after answering the call of nature or relieving oneself." So tell me something if you have heard it from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to command us, when we were on a journey or traveling, to wipe over our socks for three nights and days, without taking them off except for janabah, but not for defecation, urination or sleep." I said to him, "Did you hear him saying anything regarding desires?" He said, "Yes, we were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in a battle or Umrah, and when an Arab came towards his riding animal, he started calling out loudly, 'O Muhammad! O Muhammad!' So it was said to him, 'Lower your voice, for you have been commanded to do so.' He said, 'By Allah, I will not lower it until I hear it.' And he was a tall, stout man. When the Prophet ﷺ heard his voice, he said, 'Here I am.' He said, 'Do you see a man who loves a people, but has not yet joined them?' So he did not leave until he finished speaking to us. He told me, 'The gate of repentance is opened until the sun rises from the west. It is a distance of seventy years, and it is still open until the sun rises from that direction.' And that is when 'It will not benefit a soul to believe in its faith, if it had not believed before, or had earned through its faith some good.'"

[Machine] A man did not leave his house seeking knowledge except that the angels would spread their wings in approval of what he was doing. I said to him, "Were you one of the companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ?" He replied, "No, but a passing thought occurred to me while I was wearing my socks." He said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to command us, when we were traveling, not to take off our socks for three days and nights except when in a state of janabah (sexual impurity), but we could remove them for sleep, relieving ourselves, or urinating."

[Machine] Whenever a person leaves his home in search of knowledge, the angels spread their wings in approval of his actions. I said to him, "Were you one of the companions of the Prophet ﷺ?" He responded, "Indeed, it happened to me during the night as I wiped my feet." He said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to instruct us, when we were on a journey, not to remove our socks for three days and nights except for sexual impurity, but we could remove them for sleep, defecation, or urination."

[Machine] "What brought you here?" I said, "I came in search of knowledge." He said, "We were talking that the angels spread their wings for the seeker of knowledge, pleased with what he seeks." Then I asked him about wiping over the socks. He said, "We were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on a journey, and we used to wipe over our socks for three days and nights, and for the resident it is one day and night."

[Machine] "What brought you here?" So I said, "You are a man who has accompanied the Prophet of Allah ﷺ and he has brushed on my chest over the two socks after using the restroom and urinating. Have you heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ mention anything about it?" He said, "Yes, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to command us when we were traveling not to take off our socks for three days, except for using the restroom, urinating, or sleeping."
