11. Fasting (5/14)
Once Messenger of Allah ﷺ went out to the Musalla (to offer the prayer) of ʿId-al-Adha or Al-Fitr prayer. Then he passed by the women and said, "O women! Give alms, as I have seen that the majority of the dwellers of Hell-fire were you (women)." They asked, "Why is it so, O Messenger of Allah ﷺ ?" He replied, "You curse frequently and are ungrateful to your husbands. I have not seen anyone more deficient in intelligence and religion than you. A cautious sensible man could be led astray by some of you." The women asked, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! What is deficient in our intelligence and religion?" He said, "Is not the evidence of two women equal to the witness of one man?" They replied in the affirmative. He said, "This is the deficiency in her intelligence. Isn't it true that a woman can neither pray nor fast during her menses?" The women replied in the affirmative. He said, "This is the deficiency in her religion." (Using translation from Bukhārī 304)
11.46 [Machine] The menstruating woman breaks her fast if she becomes purified, but does not break her prayer
[Machine] Aisha asked, "Why does a menstruating woman have to make up for fasting but not for prayer?" Her companions asked her, "Are you a Haruriyyah (Kharijite)?" She replied, "I am not a Haruriyyah, but I am asking." She said, "This used to happen to us during the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ . We were commanded to make up for fasting but were not commanded to make up for prayer." Ma'mar narrated to us from Ayyub, from Abu Qilabah, from Muadhah, from Aisha, something similar to this.
11.47 [Machine] The desirability of suhoor.
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Partake in the pre-dawn meal (suhur), for there is blessing in it. This is a tradition of Adam and, according to the narration of Yahya, Anas bin Malik reported it."
[Machine] That the Prophet ﷺ said, "Have a pre-dawn meal (Suhur), for indeed there is blessing in it."
[Machine] "That the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'The distinguishing factor between our fasting and the fasting of the people of the Book is the pre-dawn meal.'"
"I heard the Messenger of Allah inviting people to have Sahur in Ramadan. He said: 'Come to the blessed breakfast." (Hasan) Chatper 26. Calling Sahur "Ghada" (Breakfast) (Using translation from Nasāʾī 2163)
11.48 [Machine] What is recommended in the pre-dawn meal?
The Prophet ﷺ as saying: How good is the believers meal of dates shortly before dawn. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 2345)
11.49 [Machine] What is recommended in hastening iftar and delaying suhoor
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "People will continue to be in goodness as long as they hasten to break their fast."
The Prophet ﷺ said: Religion will continue to prevail as long as people hasten to break the fast, because the Jews and the Christians delay doing so. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 2353)
the Messenger of Allah said: "Allah, Mighty and Sublime is He, said: 'Those of My worshippers who are most beloved to me are the quickest to break their fast.'" (Using translation from Tirmidhī 700)
[Machine] I and Masrooq entered upon Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), and we said to her, "O Mother of the believers, there are two men among the companions of Muhammad ﷺ . One of them hastens for the prayer and hastens for iftar (breaking the fast), while the other delays the prayer and delays iftar." She said, "Which of them hastens for the prayer and hastens for iftar?" We replied, "Abdullah." She said, "This is how the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to do, and the other one is Abu Musa."
[Machine] We entered upon Aisha and said, "O mother of the believers, there are two men among the companions of the Prophet ﷺ . One of them hastens the breaking of the fast and delays the pre-dawn meal, and the other delays the breaking of the fast and hastens the pre-dawn meal." She said, "Who is this person who hastens the breaking of the fast and delays the pre-dawn meal?" We said, "Ibn Mas'ud." She said, "This is how the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to do it, so do it accordingly."
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "When the night falls, the day retreats, and the sun sets, the fasting person has broken their fast."
[Machine] "We had Suhoor with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , then he stood up for prayer. I asked, 'How much time was there between the Adhan (call to prayer) and Suhoor?' He replied, 'About the recitation of fifty verses.'"
[Machine] "In the name of Allah, ﷺ , we, the prophets, were commanded to hasten our iftar (breaking of the fast) and delay our suhoor (pre-dawn meal), and to place our right hands over our left hands during prayer. This is a narration known from Talhah ibn 'Amr al-Makki, and it is considered weak and there is disagreement about it. Some said it was narrated from him in this way, while others said it was narrated from Ata' from Abu Hurairah and it was narrated from another weak source from Abu Hurairah and from a weak source from Ibn Umar. It was also narrated from Aisha, saying that there were three aspects of prophethood mentioned, and this is the most authentic narration of what was mentioned in it. It has already been mentioned in the book of prayer."
[Machine] Uthman and Ali used to pray the Maghrib prayer while looking at the dark night, then they would break their fast after the prayer. This was in Ramadan. Ash-Shafi'i said in Al-Mabsut that it seems they intentionally delayed breaking their fast because they preferred to leave it after it was permissible for them, and they became those who break their fast without eating or drinking. This is because fasting is not valid at night.
[Machine] The companions of Muhammad ﷺ were the quickest in breaking their fast and the slowest in having their pre-dawn meal.
11.50 [Machine] What is permissible to break one's fast with?
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "If one of you is fasting, then break your fast with dates. And if you do not have dates, then break your fast with water, for verily water is purifying."
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ said, "When one of you fasts, let him break his fast with dates. If he does not find dates, then with water, for indeed water is purifying." This is how I found it in Al-Musnad, with a chain of narrators established by Abu Dawud.
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Whoever finds dates, let them break their fast with it, and whoever does not, let them break their fast with water, for it is purity." Al-Bukhari reported from Abu Isa a narration from Sa'id ibn 'Amir, and in it Sa'id hesitated and al-Sahih (correct) narration is from 'Asim from Hafsah bint Sirin. The scholar said that it has also been narrated from Anas ibn Malik from another aspect.
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to break his fast before praying with dates. If dates were not available, he would break his fast with some sips of water. Abu Dawood narrated this from Ahmad ibn Hanbal.
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ did not pray Maghrib until he broke his fast, even if it was with a sip of water. This was reported by Al-Qasim bin Ghosn from Ibn Abi 'Arooba.
11.51 [Machine] What does he say when he breaks fast?
I saw Ibn Umar holding his beard with his hand and cutting what exceeded the handful of it. He (Ibn Umar) said that the Prophet ﷺ said when he broke his fast: Thirst has gone, the arteries are moist, and the reward is sure, if Allah wills. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 2357)
The Prophet of Allah ﷺ used to say when he broke his fast: O Allah, for Thee I have fasted, and with Thy provision I have broken my fast. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 2358)
11.52 [Machine] What a fasting person should invite someone who broke their fast with
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , used to say to people when he broke his fast with them: "The fasting people have broken their fast with you, and the righteous have eaten your food, and the angels have descended upon you." This is the narration of Yazid and it is a mursal hadith that Yahya did not hear from Anas. He only heard it from a man from Basrah named 'Amr ibn Zunayb or ibn Zabib, who heard it from Anas.
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sought permission to enter upon Saad ibn Ubadah, then he mentioned the hadith and said: "Then they entered the house, and he brought raisins to him, so the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ate. When he finished, he said: 'The food was eaten by the righteous, the angels sent their prayers upon you, and the fasting people broke their fast with you.'"
11.53 [Machine] Who provided iftar to a fasting person?
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Whoever breaks the fast of a fasting person will have the reward of the fasting person, without the reward of the fasting person being reduced in any way. And whoever equips a fighter or takes care of his family will have the same reward as him, without his reward being reduced in any way."
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Whoever breaks a fasting person's fast will receive a reward equal to the person's reward, without the reward being decreased in any way. And whoever prepares a fighter in the cause of Allah will have a reward equal to the fighter's reward, without the reward being decreased in any way."
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Whoever equips a warrior (for battle) or takes care of his family while he is away or prepares a meal for a fasting person, he will have the same reward as him, without any reduction from the reward of the doer." This is a preserved Hadith from Thawri, and it was narrated by Mu'ammar ibn Isma'il from Thawri, but he differed from the majority in its chain of narration.
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ said, "Whoever breaks the fast of a fasting person or prepares for a warrior, he will have a similar reward."
11.54 [Machine] The following heading translates to: "The permission of breaking the fast while traveling for the one who intends to stay, not for the one who is on a short journey.
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , went out to Mecca in the year of the conquest during Ramadan. He fasted until he reached Kadeed and then he broke his fast. The people broke their fast with him and they followed the most recent command of the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ .
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ left Medina in Ramadan with ten thousand Muslims. This happened after he had been in Medina for eight and a half years. He traveled to Mecca with those Muslims, and they fasted until they reached Al-Kadeed, which is between Usfan and Qudayd. Then, the Prophet and the Muslims with him broke their fast. They did not fast for the rest of Ramadan. Al-Zuhri said, "Breaking the fast was the last thing to be commanded. It was only done based on the orders of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ . Therefore, the last thing is taken as the final ruling." Al-Zuhri also said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ reached Mecca at the beginning of the thirteenth night of Ramadan."

I said: Messenger of Allah. I am a master of mounts and I use them ! I myself travel on them and I rent them. This month, that is, Ramadan, happend to come to me (while I am on a journey), and I find myself strong enough (to fast) as I am young, and I find that it is easier for me to fast than to postpone it, and i becomes debt due from me. Does it bring me more reward, Messenger of Allah, if I fast, or if I break ? He replied: Whichever you like, Hamzah. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 2403)

[Machine] And by Allah, I have seen something that I did not think I would ever see, that a people deviated from the guidance of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and his companions. They said this to those who were fasting. Then at that moment, he said, "O Allah, bring me to You." Al-Layth said, "The matter that people agreed upon is that they should not shorten the prayer or break their fast except within a distance of four buruds (a measurement) every twelve miles." The Sheikh said, "We have narrated in the book of prayer what indicates this from Abdullah Ibn Abbas and Abdullah Ibn Umar. And what we have narrated from Dihyah al-Kalbi, if it is authentic, it is as if he intended by his statement 'deviated from the guidance of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and his companions' in accepting the permission (rukhsah), not in determining the distance of the journey in which the person breaks his fast. And Allah knows best."

It was said to him, 'O Messenger of Allah, the people have struggled with fasting.' So he called for a cup of water after Asr prayer, and he drank while the people were watching. Some of the people broke their fast and some continued fasting. It was then conveyed to him that some people had fasted, so he said, 'Those are the disobedient ones.' Abu Abdillah al-Hafith informed us, and Abu al-Fadl ibn Ibrahim al-Muzakki informed me, and Ahmad ibn Salamah informed us, and Qutaybah ibn Sa'id informed us, and Abdul Aziz mentioned it and added to the hadith, 'And they only watched what you did.'"

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ ordered us to set out for a military expedition on the night of the conquest, which took place during the last two nights of the month of Ramadan. So, we continued to fast until we reached Al-Kadid. Then, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ordered us to break our fast. The people became divided into two groups, the fasting group and the non-fasting group. When we reached a place where we were to encounter the enemy, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ordered us to break our fast. So, we all broke our fast. In another narration by Ibn Yusuf, when we reached Dhuhuran, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ called us to meet the enemy and ordered us to break our fast. So, we all broke our fast.

I came to Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (Allah be pleased with him) and he was surrounded (by people), and when they dispersed I said to him: I am not going to ask you about what these people were asking. I ask you about fasting on a journey. Upon this he said: We travelled with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ towards Mecca and we had been observing fast. We halted at a place. There the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: You are nearing your enemy and breaking of fast would give you greater strength, and that was a concession (given to us). But some of us continued to observe the fast and some of us broke it. We then got down at another place and he (the Holy Prophet) said: You are going to encounter the enemy in the morning and breaking of the fast would give you strength, so break the fast. As it was a point of stress, so we broke the fast. But subsequently we saw ourselves observing the fast with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on a journey. (Using translation from Muslim 1120)

The Prophet ﷺ then fasted. Abu Bakr, meaning Ibn Abdur-Rahman, said: "The one who informed me said: 'I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ pour water over his head from a jug when he was thirsty or because of the heat, so it was said: 'O Messenger of Allah, some people are fasting when you are not fasting.' When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ heard this, he called for a vessel, drank from it, and the people broke their fast."

Muhammad bin Yahya and Abdur-Razzaq both narrated that Ma'mar informed us, "From Az-Zuhri, from Safwan bin Abdullah, from Umm Ad-Darda, from Ka'ab bin 'Asim Al-Ash'ari, who was one of the sailors of the Prophet ﷺ ." Abdur-Razzaq said that a group from the Yemeni delegation came to the Prophet ﷺ and he ﷺ said, "I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying, 'Fasting is not considered righteousness while travelling.'

[Machine] We were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on a journey. Most of us were shaded by a garment on that day, the one who takes shelter under a garment. As for those who broke their fast, they drank water, and engaged in activities and treated themselves. But as for those who fasted, they did not treat themselves with anything. So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Those who broke their fast have taken their reward. This is a Hadith of Ismail." And Abu Muawiya said in his Hadith, "We were with the Prophet ﷺ on a journey, among us were those who were fasting and those who had broken their fast. We came to a place to rest on a hot day, and most of us were shaded by the companion with a garment. Some of us shielded ourselves from the sun with their hands. So the fasting people broke their fast and the ones who had broken their fast struck makeshift shelters and drank water." And the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Those who broke their fast today have taken their reward."
