11. Fasting (4/14)
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ said to him, "Decide for yourself a day in his place." This is also narrated from Abdul Aziz Ad-Darawardi, from Ibrahim ibn Saad, and Ibrahim heard the hadith from Az-Zuhri, but he did not mention this wording from him. He mentioned it from Al-Layth ibn Saad, who heard it from Az-Zuhri. Abu Uwais Al-Madani also narrated it from Az-Zuhri.
[Machine] He narrated that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ordered the person who breaks their fast one day in Ramadan to fast another day in its place. This was also narrated by Abd al-Jabbar ibn Umar al-Ayli from az-Zuhri, but it is not strong.
[Machine] A man came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while he was scratching his head and hitting his chest, saying, "Al-A'bad (the distant ones) have been destroyed." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Destroyed in what way?" The man said, "Today, I have fallen upon my family, and it is in Ramadan." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Do you have a slave whom you can set free?" The man said, "No." The Prophet ﷺ said, "Can you fast for two consecutive months?" The man said, "No." The Prophet ﷺ said, "Can you feed sixty poor people?" The man said, "No." Then the man left, and another man came from the people with a great amount of sweat on him, and his charity. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Where is the one who asked? They said, 'He has left.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Call him back.' So they called him back and he said, 'Take this and give it in charity as an expiation for what you have done.' The man said, 'O Messenger of Allah, there is no one more in need than me and my family.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ laughed until his molars became visible. He said, 'Eat and feed your family and substitute your fast with it.'"
[Machine] While we were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , a man came to him, grabbed his hair and cursed himself. The Prophet ﷺ said to him, "What is wrong with you?" The man said, "My wife committed adultery during Ramadan." The Prophet ﷺ told him to free a slave, but the man said he could not find a slave to free. Then the Prophet ﷺ told him to fast for two consecutive months, but the man said he was unable to. The Prophet ﷺ then told him to feed sixty poor people, but the man said he could not find them. Finally, a basket of dates containing fifteen sa'a (a unit of measurement) was brought to the Prophet ﷺ , and he told the man to feed sixty poor people with it. The man said, "O Prophet of Allah, there are people in my own family who are poorer than us." The Prophet ﷺ replied, "Feed yourself and your family." This narration was reported by Abu Bakr Muhammad ibn Abdullah ibn Ibrahim Ash-Shafi'i, narrated by Ahmad ibn Ubaydullah, narrated by Yazid ibn Harun, narrated by Al-Hajjaj ibn Artat, narrated by Amr ibn Shuayb, narrated by his father, narrated by his grandfather, narrated by Abu Hurairah.
[Machine] A man came to the Prophet ﷺ and confessed that he had committed adultery during the month of Ramadan. The Prophet ﷺ advised him to free a slave but he replied that he couldn't afford it. Then the Prophet ﷺ suggested fasting for two consecutive months, but he insisted that he couldn't do it. The Prophet ﷺ then advised him to feed sixty poor people, but he replied that he couldn't find them. Finally, someone brought a container with fifteen measures of dates to the Prophet ﷺ and he instructed the man to distribute it as charity. The man, however, insisted that he and his family were in greater need of it. The Prophet ﷺ then told him that he and his family were the ones in need and instructed him to observe fasting for one day instead, and seek forgiveness from Allah, repeating this process as necessary.
[Machine] An Arab man came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ with his hair disheveled and his neck bruised, and he said, "The Abda tribe has perished." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked, "What happened?" He replied, "I unintentionally harmed my family during Ramadan while I was fasting." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked him, "Can you offer the expiation of freeing a slave?" He replied, "No." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked, "Can you fast for two consecutive months?" He replied, "No." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then said, "Sit down, and a basket of dates was brought to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He said, "Take this and give it in charity." The man replied, "I do not find anyone who is more needy than me." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Eat it and observe a day of fasting in place of what you lost." Ataa (one of the narrators) said, "So, I asked Sa'eed, 'How much does this basket of dates weigh?' He replied, 'Between fifteen and twenty sa' (a measurement unit).'"
11.35 [Machine] The novel of the one who narrated in this hadith a word that is not accepted by the people of hadith.
[Machine] While I was with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , a man came to him and said, "O Messenger of Allah, I have perished and caused others to perish." The Prophet ﷺ said, "Woe to you, what has happened?" He said, "I had intercourse with my wife during Ramadan." The Prophet ﷺ said, "Free a slave." And the narrator of the hadith mentioned that our scholar Abu Abdullah Al-Hafiz said, may Allah have mercy on him, that this statement "I have perished and caused others to perish" was conveyed to Muhammad bin Al-Musayyab Al-Arghiyani.
[Machine] They both have one expiation except fasting, as indeed fasting is an expiation for both of them. It was said to him: What if he forces her? He said: Fasting alone is still the expiation.
11.36 [Machine] Intensifying Punishment for Deliberately Breaking the Fast during Ramadan without Excuse
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Whoever breaks their fast on a day of Ramadan without a valid excuse, Allah will not accept their fasting for that day, even if they were to fast the entire lifetime. What has reached me from Abu 'Isa al-Tirmidhi is that he said: "I asked al-Bukhari about this hadith, and Abu al-Mutawwus, whose name is Yazid ibn al-Mutawwus, narrated this hadith exclusively. I do not know if his father heard it from Abu Hurairah or not. Al-Bukhari has included the text of this hadith in the chapter's biography."
[Machine] Whoever breaks (fast) one day of Ramadan without justification, their fasting for the rest of their life will not be accepted until they meet Allah. If He wishes, He will forgive them, and if He wishes, He will punish them. Another narration from Ibn Mas'ood mentions (the same).
[Machine] Abdullah ibn Mas'ud said, "Whoever intentionally breaks their fast during Ramadan without a valid excuse, and then spends their whole life trying to make up for it, it will not be accepted from them by any means. This person, I believe, is Ibn Husayn al-Nakha'i, who is not strong in knowledge."
[Machine] "There is no expiation (atonement) for him. As for the hadith..."
[Machine] reported that the Prophet ordered whoever broke their fast during Ramadan to make up for it by fasting a day in compensation. The compensation is to fast for 80 days. Abu Al-Husayn reported that Abu Ja'far narrated from Ismail who narrated from Yahya who narrated from Hushaym who narrated from Laith who narrated from Mujahid who narrated from Abu Hurayrah who narrated from the Prophet with a similar wording. This is a shortened version of the narration that Hushaym reported.
11.37 [Machine] Whoever eats or drinks forgetfully should complete their fast and not make up for it.
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "If one of you forgets and eats or drinks while fasting, he should complete his fast, for it is only Allah who has fed him and given him drink."
[Machine] On the authority of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ , he said: "If one of you observes fasting for a day and forgets and eats or drinks, then let him complete his fast, for indeed it is Allah who provides him with food and drink."
[Machine] A man came to the Prophet ﷺ and said, "Indeed, I ate and drank forgetting that I was fasting." The Prophet ﷺ said, "Complete your fast, for indeed Allah has provided you with food and drink." This narration was reported by Hammad ibn Salamah from Ayyub, Habib, and Hisham from Muhammad ibn Seereen with these words. It was also narrated from Abu Rafi' from Abu Hurairah from the Prophet ﷺ .
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ said: "Whoever breaks their fast in Ramadan without a valid excuse, they have no obligation to make up for it or offer expiation, and likewise."
11.38 [Machine] Whoever derives pleasure from his wife until he ejaculates, his fast is invalidated, and even if he does not ejaculate, it does not invalidate it based on evidence from what is.
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to kiss and have intimate relations while fasting. He had the most control among you over his desires. He mentioned the hadith of Sulaiman and the hadith of Abu Dawood, which were close in meaning. In the narration of Ibn Abi Adiyy, he said that Alqamah and Shurayh ibn Arta'ah mentioned to Aisha the Qibla (direction of prayer) for the fasting person, and then they mentioned the hadith in its essence.
[Machine] The prophet ﷺ used to kiss and engage in sexual intercourse while fasting, and he had the most control among you in restraining oneself.
11.39 [Machine] Translation: "Pregnant and nursing women, if they fear for their children, they are allowed to break their fast and give charity for each missed day with a measure of wheat and then make up
[Machine] "To break their fast if they wish, and to feed a poor person in place of each missed day, then this was abrogated in this verse: 'So whoever sights the month, let him fast it' [Quran 2:185]. It is established for the elderly Shaykh and the elderly woman, if they are unable to fast, and for pregnant and breastfeeding women if they fear for their health, to break their fast and feed a poor person in place of each missed day. This is the wording of a Meccan narration, and in the narration of Rauh, Al-Hublani, and the breastfeeding woman, if they fear, and the rest are equal."

[Machine] In the hadith, it is mentioned that the pregnant and breastfeeding women are allowed to break their fasts and are allowed to eat if they fear for their children. Abu Ali Al-Rudhbary told us that Abu Bakr ibn Dasa narrated to us, who was narrated by Abu Dawood, who was narrated by Abu Al-Muthanna, who was narrated by Ibn Abi Adi, from Sa'id, who mentioned it.
[Machine] She breaks her fast and feeds a poor person in place of each day with a measure of wheat. Abu Sa'id added in his narration: Al-Shafi'i said: Malik and the people of knowledge agree with her to observe the fast, but in addition to that, she should make up for the missed days. Malik said: She must make up for the missed days because Allah says: "Whoever among you is ill or on a journey, the same number [of days] should be made up [upon recovery or return]." The sheikh said: It has been narrated by Anas bin Malik from Ja'far bin Muhammad from Ibn Labibah or Ibn Abi Labibah from Abdullah bin Amr bin Uthman that a woman who was fasting while pregnant became very thirsty in Ramadan. Ibn Umar was asked about her, so he ordered her to break her fast and feed a poor person in place of each day. Then, when she regained her health, he ordered her to make up for the missed days. Abu Ubaid mentioned this in his book on abrogation and the abrogated. And it was narrated by Ibn Abi Maryam from Anas bin Malik that Mujahid said: She breaks her fast, feeds a poor person, and makes up for the missed days. And in a narration by Qatadah from Al-Hasan al-Basri, it was said: They both break their fasts and make up for the missed days. And in a narration by Yunus bin Ubaid from Al-Hasan al-Murdi, if a breastfeeding woman fears for herself, she breaks her fast, feeds a poor person, and makes up for the missed days.

11.40 [Machine] Pregnant and breastfeeding women cannot fast; they break their fast and make up for it without expiation, like the sick person.

[Machine] The cavalry of the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , became jealous of us, so I went to him and found him eating. He said, "Come, eat." I said, "I am fasting." He said, "Sit down, let me tell you about fasting." Allah has exempted the traveler from half of the prayer, and the traveler, the pregnant woman, and the nursing mother from fasting. By Allah, the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , said both of these things or one of them. Oh, how I long for myself if I did not taste food from the food of the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ ." And a man from the Banu Abd Allah bin Ka'b, the brothers of Banu Qushair, said something.

[Machine] Some camels belonging to him were lost, so he came to the city in search of his camels. He entered upon the Prophet ﷺ while he was eating and said to him, "Come for lunch." He replied, "Indeed, I am fasting." The man said, "Fasting has been made optional for travelers, as well as those who are sick or breastfeeding." Then Abu Al-Husayn Ibn Al-Fadl Al-Qattan informed us that Abdullah Ibn Ja'far narrated to us, and Ya'qub Ibn Sufyan narrated to us, and Al-Mu'alla Ibn Asad narrated to us, and Wuhayb narrated to us from Ayyub, from Abu Qilabah, from a man of Banu 'Amir, who said, "I met him and asked him, so he informed me about a man from their group who came to the city in search of his lost camels and had entered upon the Prophet ﷺ, and he narrated the story in the same way. Al-Thawri also narrated it from Ayyub, from Abu Qilabah, from Anas Ibn Malik Al-Khazraji, and Ma'mar narrated it from Ayyub, from Abu Qilabah, from a man of Banu 'Amir, that a man named Anas informed him. Khalid Al-Hadha' narrated it from Abu Qilabah as well, and Yazid Ibn Abdullah Ibn Al-Shikhair narrated it from a man of Banu 'Amir, that a man from among them came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Yahya Ibn Abi Kathir also narrated it from Abu Qilabah, from Abu Ummayah or Abu Al-Muhajir, from Abu Ummayah, who said, "I came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and his name was Ummayah Anas Ibn Malik Al-Khazraji."

11.41 [Machine] The Dislike of Kissing for Those Whose Desires Are Triggered by Kissing
A man asked the Prophet ﷺ whether one who was fasting could embrace (his wife) and he gave him permission; but when another man came to him, and asked him, he forbade him. The one to whom he gave permission was an old man and the one whom he forbade was a youth. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 2387)
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ permitted the sheikh to change his direction of prayer (qibla) while fasting, but prohibited it for the young man. The sheikh said that he can handle it, but the young man will ruin his fast. Yahya ibn Zakariya narrated to us from Israel from Abu al-Anbas from Al-Agharr from Abu Hurayrah from the Prophet ﷺ similarly.
[Machine] Regarding the qibla while fasting, he permitted it and a young man forbid it in the year 8086 AH. With its chain of narration, Anba' Mis'ar reported from Habib, from Mujahid, from Ibn Abbas something similar to that.
[Machine] About the direction of prayer for the fasting person, the elderly should have a wider range of leniency in it, while it is disliked for the young person.

[Machine] He disliked facing and directly engaging with the fasting person.
[Machine] A sheikh who does not embarrass or make things difficult for people, and by Allah, there is no harm in that. Ibn Umar said, as for you, accept it, for there is no better than that for you.
[Machine] I said, "Wasn't the Messenger of Allah ﷺ engaged in physical relations?" She said, "Indeed, he had the most control among you to restrain himself."
[Machine] Umar ibn al-Khattab said, "I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in a dream, but he did not look at me. So, I said, 'O Messenger of Allah, what is my matter?' He turned to me and said, 'Are you not going forward (to the front) while you are fasting?' By the one in whose hand is my soul, I will not go forward (to the front) while I am fasting." A woman [named] Ummar ibn Hamza stood out to him alone. If this is true, then Umar ibn al-Khattab was stronger than what is assumed in terms of his desire to change the direction of qiblah (the direction Muslims face in prayer), and Allah knows best.

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah used to kiss during the month of fasting. Abu Bakr ibn Furak informed us that Abdullah ibn Ja'far narrated to us that Yunus ibn Habib narrated to us that Abu Dawud At-Tayalisi narrated to us that Salam mentioned it.

(daughter of Um Salama) that her mother said, "While I was (lying) with Messenger of Allah ﷺ underneath a woolen sheet, I got the menstruation, and then slipped away and put on the clothes (which I used to wear) in menses. He asked, "What is the matter? Did you get your menses?" I replied in the affirmative and then entered underneath that woolen sheet. I and Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to take a bath from one water pot and he used to kiss me while he was fasting." (Using translation from Bukhārī 1929)

Should one observing fast kiss (his wife)? The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him: Ask her (Umm Salama). She informed him that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did that, where upon he said: Messenger of Allah, Allah pardoned thee all thy sins, the previous and the later ones. Upon this the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ) said: By Allah, I am the most God conscious among you and I fear Him most among you. (Using translation from Muslim 1108)

11.44 [Machine] Whoever faints during any day of Ramadan, his fasting is not excused even if he does not eat on that day. Al-Shafi'i said: Because he did not enter into fasting while he was sane. Our companions said: The Prophet ﷺ said: "Actions are judged by intentions." And Allah ﷻ said about the fasting person: "He leaves his desire, food, and drink for My sake.
I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: ʿDeeds are but by intentions and each man will have but that which he intended. If a man's migration was for the sake of Allah, then his migration was for that for which he migrated, but if his migration was to achieve some worldly aim or to take some woman in marriage, his migration was for that for which he migrated.ʿ (Using translation from Aḥmad 168)
The Prophet ﷺ said, "Allah said: The Fast is for Me and I will give the reward for it, as he (the one who observes the fast) leaves his sexual desire, food and drink for My Sake. Fasting is a screen (from Hell) and there are two pleasures for a fasting person, one at the time of breaking his fast, and the other at the time when he will meet his Lord. And the smell of the mouth of a fasting person is better in Allah's Sight than the smell of musk." (See Hadith No. 128, Vol. 3). (Using translation from Bukhārī 7492)
[Machine] That fainting during fasting does not invalidate it.
