11. Fasting (3/14)
[Machine] "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: They are two dawns. As for the one that appears like the tail of a fox, then it does not make anything permissible or impermissible. And as for the elongated one that extends along the horizon, then it makes the prayer permissible and prohibits eating. This hadith is transmitted and has been mentioned with reference to Jabir ibn Abdullah."
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "There are two types of dawn. As for the first, it does not prohibit eating nor does it permit prayer. As for the second, it prohibits eating and permits prayer." This is the wording of a hadith reported by Ibn Muhriz, and in the narration of Amr al-Naqid it is reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "There are two types of dawn. One type allows eating and prohibits prayer, and the other type allows prayer and prohibits eating." Abu Ahmad al-Zubayri narrated it, and it was also reported by others from al-Thawri, attributed to Ibn Abbas.
11.21 [Machine] The time when the fasting person breaks their fast
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "When the night approaches from here and the day withdraws from here and the sun sets, then the fasting person has broken their fast."
We were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on a journey during the month of Ramadan. When the sun had sunk he said: So and so, get down (from your ride) and prepare the meal of parched barley for us. He said: Messenger of Allah, still (there is light of) day. He (the Holy Prophet) said: Get down and prepare meal of parched barley for us. So he got down and prepared the meal of parched barley and offered him, and the apostle of Allah ﷺ drank that (liquid meal). He then told with the gesture of his hand that when the sun sank from that side and the night appeared from that side, then the observer of the fast should break it. (Using translation from Muslim 1101a)
11.22 [Machine] Intensification towards those who break their fast before sunset
[Machine] I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying that while I was asleep, two men came to me and took hold of my upper arm and brought me to a rugged mountain. They told me to climb, but I said that I was not able to. They assured me that they would make it easy for me, so I started climbing until I reached a point on the mountain where I could hear extremely loud noises. I asked, "What are these noises?" They replied, "These are the screams of the people of Hell." Then they took me further until I saw people hung by their hamstrings with their jaws torn apart and their blood flowing. I asked, "Who are these people?" They replied, "These are the ones who break their fast before it is time to do so."
11.23 [Machine] Who ate while believing that morning had not yet come, but then realized that it had risen.
[Machine] "Whoever eats from the beginning of the day, then let them eat from the end of it. 8008. He said: Sa'id narrated to us, Hushaym narrated to us, Mansur reported from Ibn Sirin that he said something similar to that."
[Machine] And Al-Hasan said: "He completes his fasting and there is nothing upon him."
[Machine] If someone fasts during the month of Ramadan and makes up for a missed day, and if someone fasts outside of Ramadan, then they should eat from the end of the month, as they have already eaten from the beginning. It has been narrated from Sa'id ibn Jubayr, similar to the statement of Ibn Sirin, and from Mujahid, similar to the statement of Hasan. And the statement of one who says that they should make up for the missed day is supported by the evidence of the obligation of fasting from the time of dawn, as well as what has been narrated in this matter. And with Allah is the success.
11.24 [Machine] Who ate while thinking that the sun had set but then it became apparent that it hadn't set yet
[Machine] We broke our fast during the time of the Prophet's ﷺ covenant on a cloudy day, then the sun appeared to us. I said to Hisham, "So should we make up for it?" He said, "No need for that."
[Machine] About Umar, who is an interpreter in the judiciary.
[Machine] We were with Umar, and a plate of dates was brought to him in the month of Ramadan. The Mu'adhin announced that the sun had risen, to which Umar responded, "May Allah keep us safe from your evil, we did not appoint you to announce the rising of the sun. Rather, we appointed you to call people to prayer." O people, whoever among you has already broken their fast, they should make up for it by fasting another day. And whoever has not, let them complete their fast. This is according to the narration of Abu Nuaim, while in another narration it is attributed to Ya'ala. So we were brought some food and Umar broke his fast, and he said, "This is the easiest way to make up for a missed day of fasting. And whoever can't do this, let them complete their fast."
[Machine] I was with Umar during Ramadan, and he broke his fast as did the people. The call to prayer was made, so the Muadhin ascended to make the call and said, "O people, the sun has not set yet." Umar said, "May Allah protect us from your evil. We did not appoint you as a caller. Then Umar said, "Whoever broke their fast should fast for one day in its place, and likewise..."
[Machine] I was with him one evening during Ramadan, and it was a cloudy day, so he thought that the sun had set. Therefore, Umar drank and offered me a drink. Then they looked at it on the side of the mountain, and Umar said, "I do not care, by Allah, we will spend a day in its place, and likewise."
[Machine] "While we were sitting in the mosque in Madinah during Ramadan, the sky became cloudy and we saw that the sun had set and evening had arrived. A bowl of milk from the house of Hafsah was brought to us, which Umar and we drank from. We hadn't been long when the clouds dispersed and the sun appeared. Some of us said to others, 'Let's consider this day done.' Umar heard this and said, 'By Allah, we will not consider it done, and we did not drink with the intention of committing a sin.'"
[Machine] Yusuf son of Muhammad son of Yazid son of Sayfi son of Suhaib, companion of the Prophet ﷺ , narrated to us, Shuayb son of Umru son of Sulaim the Ansari, who was around 115 years old at the time. He said, "My father and I broke our fast with Suhaib in the month of Ramadan on a cloudy day with rain. While we were having our pre-dawn meal, the sun rose. Suhaib said, 'This is a provision from Allah, complete your fasting until night and make up for this day later.'"
11.25 [Machine] Who is the one who observed the dawn and found something in it and completed his fast as evidence of what?
I was in good spirits one day and kissed (my wife) when I was fasting. I came to the Prophet ﷺ and said: I have done something serious. I kissed (my wife) when I was fasting. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “What do you think if you rinse your mouth with water when you are fasting?ʿ I said: There is nothing wrong with it. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Then why (are you worried)?ʿ (Using translation from Aḥmad 138)
[Machine] Narrated by Prophet Muhammad ﷺ : "When any one of you hears the call to prayer and has a vessel in his hand, he should not put it down until he fulfills his need from it." Hammad ibn Salama reported to us from Ammar ibn Abi Ammar, who reported from Abu Huraira that the Prophet ﷺ said the same. Al-Riyahi mentioned in his narration that the muezzins used to call for prayer at the break of dawn and likewise.
[Machine] The translation of the passage into English is as follows:
"The Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , said, 'Let no one prevent Bilal's call to prayer from reaching you during the pre-dawn meal, for he calls to awaken your sleepers and to return your standers.' Jarir mentioned in his narration, 'He does not mean that he should say this, but he should say, 'This is the Fajr call to prayer that is calling.'"
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Indeed, Bilal gives the call to prayer at night, so eat and drink until you hear the call to prayer from the son of Umm Maktum."
[Machine] "To me, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Invite him, let us go to lunch.' I said, 'I intend to fast.' He said, 'I also intend to fast, but our caller to prayer in Basrah has an eye problem or something, as he gives the call to prayer before dawn breaks.'"
11.26 [Machine] Whoever begins the dawn while still in a state of impurity, he must complete his fast
[Machine] To fast, when one intends to fast, they should stand up, perform ablution, and then complete their fasting.
11.27 [Machine] Whoever experiences vomiting does not break their fast, and whoever intentionally gathers saliva to swallow it has broken their fast.
[Machine] Whoever vomits while fasting must make up for it, and whoever involuntarily vomits does not need to make it up. This is what Malik informed us, on the authority of Nafi', on the authority of Ibn Umar.
“Whoever unintentionally vomits, he does not have to make up for the fast, but whoever makes himself vomit, has to make up for the fast.” (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 1676)
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Whoever vomits involuntarily while fasting, there is no need for them to make up for it, but if they vomit voluntarily, then they should make up for it. And Abu Abdullah Al-Hafiz informed us, narrating from Abu Al-Abbas Muhammad Ibn Ya'qub, who narrated from Ibrahim Ibn Abi Dawud Al-Burlusi, who narrated from Abu Saeed Yahya Ibn Sulaiman Al-Ju'fi, who narrated from Hafs Ibn Ghiyath, who narrated from Hisham Ibn Hassan. Hisham Ibn Hassan Al-Firdousi mentioned it with its meaning, and he was unique in that.
[Machine] If a person eats forgetfully while fasting, then it is only sustenance that Allah has provided for him. And if he vomits while fasting, then he has to make up for it. And if he is overcome by vomiting, then he is not obligated to make up for it.
[Machine] He informed him that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ vomited and broke his fast. So, I met Thawban, the slave of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , in the mosque of Damascus, and I said to him, "Abu Darda informed me that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ vomited and broke his fast." He said, "He spoke the truth, and I poured water for him to perform ablution. This hadith is narrated with different chains of narrators, and if it is authentic, it implies that if one intentionally vomits, it is similar to if he were to have vomited and invalidated his fast. It is as if he ﷺ was voluntarily fasting. And it has been narrated from another perspective by Thawban."
[Machine] Narrated (said): from the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , he said: I saw the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , vomit, and then he broke his fast.
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ woke up fasting and hungry, so he broke his fast. When asked about it, he replied, "I vomited, and that is why."
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Neither vomiting, nor emission, nor cupping breaks the fast of the one who is fasting. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 2376)
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Three things do not break the fast of the fasting person: vomiting, sleeping while in a state of impurity, and cupping. And it was reported that Abdur Rahman is weak in narrating hadith, and Abu al-Hasan Ali bin Ahmed bin Abdan informed us, reporting from Ahmed bin Ubaid al-Saffar, who narrated from Ubaid bin Shareek, who narrated from Abu al-Jumahir, who narrated from Abdur Rahman bin Zaid bin Aslam. This narration is the most reliable."

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent a man from among the Muslims to his people on the day of Ashura and said: "Command them to observe fasting on this day." The man replied: "O Messenger of Allah, I fear that they will not adhere to it until they eat." He ﷺ said: "Whoever among them eats, let him fast the rest of the day."

A man came to the Prophet ﷺ and said: I am undone. He asked him: What has happened to you ? He said: I had intercourse with my wife in Ramadan (while I was fasting). He asked: Can you set a slave free ? He said: No. He again asked: Can you fast for two consecutive months ? He said: No. He asked: Can you provide food for sixty poor people ? He said: No. He said: Sit down. Then a huge basket containing dates ('araq) was brought to the Prophet ﷺ. He then said to him: Give it as sadaqah (i.e. alms). He said: Messenger of Allah, there is no poorer family than mine between the two lave plains of it (Medina). The Messenger of Allah ﷺ laughed so that his eye-teeth became visible, and said: Give it to your family to eat. Musaddad said in another place: "his canine teeth".
[Machine] A man came to the Prophet ﷺ and said, "Indeed, the other man has had intercourse with his wife in Ramadan." The Prophet said to him, "Do you find a slave to free?" He replied, "No." The Prophet asked, "Can you fast for two consecutive months?" He replied, "No." The Prophet asked, "Do you find sixty needy people to feed?" He replied, "No." Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was brought a container of dates, and he said, "Give this in charity on his behalf." The man said, "The people of my household are more in need of it than us." The Prophet said, "Feed your family." Muhammad ibn Muslim said, "This was only permit for him. So whoever experiences a similar situation should do as he was commanded."

[Machine] A man came to the Prophet ﷺ and said, "O Messenger of Allah, I have committed adultery with my wife during Ramadan." He said, "Free a slave." The man replied, "I do not have the means to do so." The Prophet ﷺ said, "Then fast for two consecutive months." The man replied, "I am unable to do that." The Prophet ﷺ said, "Then feed sixty poor people." The man replied, "I cannot find sixty poor people." Then a basket containing fifteen kilograms of dates was brought to the Prophet ﷺ , and he said, "Take it and feed them on your behalf." The man said, "O Messenger of Allah, the people in between our houses are more in need of it than us." The Prophet ﷺ said, "Take it and feed your family, and that is how you will fulfill your obligation."
[Machine] On the authority of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , it is narrated that a man had relations with his wife during Ramadan. He then sought advice from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ regarding this matter. The Prophet ﷺ asked him, "Do you have a slave whom you can free?" He replied, "No." The Prophet ﷺ then asked him, "Are you able to fast for two consecutive months?" He replied, "No." The Prophet ﷺ then said, "Feed sixty poor persons." Ibn Bukair added in his narration that they should be consecutive days.
[Machine] A man came to the Prophet ﷺ and said, "O Messenger of Allah, I have ruined myself." The Prophet ﷺ asked, "What happened?" The man replied, "I have harmed my family during Ramadan." The Prophet ﷺ asked, "Do you have a slave?" The man replied, "No, O Messenger of Allah." The Prophet ﷺ asked, "Can you fast for two consecutive months?" The man replied, "No, O Messenger of Allah." The Prophet ﷺ asked, "Can you feed sixty poor people?" The man replied, "I cannot find them." Then, the Prophet ﷺ was brought a basket of dates and he said, "Go, give this in charity." The man said, "There are people poorer than me. By the One who has sent you with the truth, there are people in more need of this than us." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ smiled and said, "Take it and give it to your family." Az-Zuhri said, "This ruling was only for that man. If a person harms his family during Ramadan today, he does not have any option but to make expiation."
[Machine] A man came to the Prophet ﷺ and said that he was in need. The Prophet asked him what happened to him, and he said that he had a financial crisis because he supported his family during Ramadan. The Prophet then called for a basket called "Al-Arq" which contained dates, and he asked where the man was. The man stood up and the Prophet told him to take it as charity.
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ was sitting in the shade of a date palm tree when a man from the Banu Bayadah approached him. The man said, "I accidentally touched my wife in Ramadan and now I'm burnt (with guilt)." The Prophet ﷺ told the man to free a slave, but the man said he couldn't find one. The Prophet ﷺ then told him to feed sixty poor people, but the man said he didn't have enough food. The Prophet ﷺ was then brought a container of dates, containing twenty wasq (a unit of measurement) and told the man to give it as charity. The man said he didn't have any food for his family. The sheikh, Al-Ziyadat, mentioned that this narration indicates the accuracy of the memory of Abu Hurairah and others regarding this story. The mention of twenty wasq in the narration is a clear expression narrated by Muhammad ibn Ja'far ibn Zubair, and this hadith was also narrated by Muhammad ibn Ishaq ibn Yasir from Muhammad ibn Ja'far with some variations. In the end, Muhammad ibn Ja'far said, "I later found out that the charity given was actually twenty wasq of dates, as was narrated in the hadith of Abu Hurairah, and that is the most authentic version, and Allah knows best."

While we were sitting with the Prophet ﷺ a man came and said, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! I have been ruined." Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked what was the matter with him. He replied "I had sexual intercourse with my wife while I was fasting." Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked him, "Can you afford to manumit a slave?" He replied in the negative. Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked him, "Can you fast for two successive months?" He replied in the negative. The Prophet ﷺ asked him, "Can you afford to feed sixty poor persons?" He replied in the negative. The Prophet ﷺ kept silent and while we were in that state, a big basket full of dates was brought to the Prophet ﷺ . He asked, "Where is the questioner?" He replied, "I (am here)." The Prophet ﷺ said (to him), "Take this (basket of dates) and give it in charity." The man said, "Should I give it to a person poorer than I? By Allah; there is no family between its (i.e. Medina's) two mountains who are poorer than I." The Prophet ﷺ smiled till his premolar teeth became visible and then said, 'Feed your family with it." He said, 'No.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked, 'Can you fast for two consecutive months?' He said, 'No.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked, 'Can you provide food for sixty poor people?' Abu Hurayrah said, 'While we were in that state, the Prophet ﷺ was brought some dates in a container, and he said, 'Where is the man who was in need?' So, take this and give it in charity.' The man said, 'O Messenger of Allah, by Allah, the people in my house are even poorer than us.' The Prophet ﷺ laughed until his canines became visible and then said, 'Feed your family with it."
