[Machine] A man broke his fast during the month of Ramadan, so the Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded him to either free a slave, fast for two consecutive months, or feed sixty needy people. The man said that he could not find any means to do so, so he went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ with a basket of dates. The Messenger told him to give it as charity. The man said, "O Messenger of Allah, I do not find anyone more in need of it than myself." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ smiled until his molars were visible, then he said, "Eat it."

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Sit down. Thereafter a huge basket of dates ('araq) was brought to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He said: Take this and give it as sadaqah (alms). He said: Messenger of Allah, there is no poorer than I. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ thereupon laughed so that his canine teeth became visible and said: Eat it yourself. Abu Dawud said: Ibn Juraij narrated it from al-Zuhri in the wordings of the narrator Malik that a man broke his fast. This version says: You should either free a slave, or fast for two months, or provide food for sixty poor men.

Yahya related to me from Malik from Ibn Shihab from Hunayd ibn Abd arRahman ibn Awf from Abu Hurayra that a man broke the fast in Ramadan and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ordered him to make kaffara by freeing a slave, or fasting two consecutive months, or feeding sixty poor people, and he said, "I can't do it." Someone brought a large basket of dates to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and he said, "Take this and give it away as sadaqa." He said, "Messenger of Allah, there is no-ne more needy than I am." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ laughed until his eye-teeth appeared, and then he said, "Eat them."

He said, "I cannot find a way to do any of these." So the Prophet ﷺ was brought some dates, and he said, "Take this and give it in charity." The man said, "O Messenger of Allah, I cannot find anyone poorer than me." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ laughed until his molar teeth were visible, then he said, "Eat it all."
