A man came to the Prophet ﷺ and said, "I am ruined!" The Prophet ﷺ said, "Why?" He said, "I had sexual intercourse with my wife while fasting (in the month of Ramadan)." The Prophet ﷺ said to him, "Manumit a slave (as expiation)." He replied, "I cannot afford that." The Prophet ﷺ said, "Then fast for two successive months." He said, "I cannot." The Prophet ﷺ said, "Then feed sixty poor persons." He said, "I have nothing to do that." In the meantime a basket full of dates was brought to the Prophet ﷺ . He said, "Where is the questioner." The man said, "I am here." The Prophet ﷺ said (to him), "Give this (basket of dates) in charity (as expiation)." He said, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! Shall I give it to poorer people than us? By Him Who sent you with the Truth, there is no family between Medina's two mountains poorer than us." The Prophet ﷺ smiled till his pre-molar teeth became visible. He then said, "Then take it."  

أَتَى النَّبِيَّ ﷺ رَجُلٌ فَقَالَ هَلَكْتُ قَالَ وَلِمَ قَالَ وَقَعْتُ عَلَى أَهْلِي فِي رَمَضَانَ قَالَ فَأَعْتِقْ رَقَبَةً قَالَ لَيْسَ عِنْدِي قَالَ فَصُمْ شَهْرَيْنِ مُتَتَابِعَيْنِ قَالَ لاَ أَسْتَطِيعُ قَالَ فَأَطْعِمْ سِتِّينَ مِسْكِينًا قَالَ لاَ أَجِدُ فَأُتِيَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ بِعَرَقٍ فِيهِ تَمْرٌ فَقَالَ أَيْنَ السَّائِلُ قَالَ هَا أَنَا ذَا قَالَ تَصَدَّقْ بِهَذَا قَالَ عَلَى أَحْوَجَ مِنَّا يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ فَوَالَّذِي بَعَثَكَ بِالْحَقِّ مَا بَيْنَ لاَبَتَيْهَا أَهْلُ بَيْتٍ أَحْوَجُ مِنَّا فَضَحِكَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ حَتَّى بَدَتْ أَنْيَابُهُ قَالَ فَأَنْتُمْ إِذًا  

A man came to Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! I am ruined!" The Prophet ﷺ said, "Waihaka (May Allah be merciful to you) !" The man said, "I have done sexual intercourse with my wife while fasting in Ramadan." The Prophet ﷺ said, "Manumit a slave." The man said, " I cannot afford that. " The Prophet ﷺ said; "Then fast for two successive months." The man said, " I have no power to do so." The Prophet ﷺ said, "Then feed sixty poor persons." The man said, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! Shall I give it to people other than my family? By Him in Whose Hand my life is, there is nobody poorer than me in the whole city of Medina." The Prophet ﷺ smiled till his premolar teeth became visible, and said, "Take it." Az-Zuhri said (that the Prophet ﷺ said). "Wailaka."  

أَنَّ رَجُلاً أَتَى رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ هَلَكْتُ قَالَ وَيْحَكَ قَالَ وَقَعْتُ عَلَى أَهْلِي فِي رَمَضَانَ قَالَ أَعْتِقْ رَقَبَةً قَالَ مَا أَجِدُهَا قَالَ فَصُمْ شَهْرَيْنِ مُتَتَابِعَيْنِ قَالَ لاَ أَسْتَطِيعُ قَالَ فَأَطْعِمْ سِتِّينَ مِسْكِينًا قَالَ مَا أَجِدُ فَأُتِيَ بِعَرَقٍ فَقَالَ خُذْهُ فَتَصَدَّقْ بِهِ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ أَعَلَى غَيْرِ أَهْلِي فَوَالَّذِي نَفْسِي بِيَدِهِ مَا بَيْنَ طُنُبَىِ الْمَدِينَةِ أَحْوَجُ مِنِّي فَضَحِكَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ حَتَّى بَدَتْ أَنْيَابُهُ قَالَ خُذْهُ  

Messenger of Allah, I am undone. He (the Holy Prophet) said: What has brought about your ruin? He said: I have had intercourse with my wife during the month of Ramadan. Upon this he (the Holy prophet) said: Can you find a slave to set him free? He said: NO He (the Prophet again) said: Can you observe fast for two consecutive months? He said: No. He (the Holy Prophet) said: Can you provide food to sixty poor people?, He said: No. He then sat down and (in the meanwhile) there was brought to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ a basket which contained dates. He (the Holy Prophet) said: Give these (dates) in charity. He (the man) said: Am I to give to one who is poorer than I? There is no family poorer than mine between the two lava plains of Medina. The Apostle of Allah ﷺ laughed so that his molar teeth became visible and said: Go and give it to your family to eat.  

جَاءَ رَجُلٌ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَقَالَ هَلَكْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ قَالَ وَمَا أَهْلَكَكَ قَالَ وَقَعْتُ عَلَى امْرَأَتِي فِي رَمَضَانَ قَالَ هَلْ تَجِدُ مَا تُعْتِقُ رَقَبَةً قَالَ لاَ قَالَ فَهَلْ تَسْتَطِيعُ أَنْ تَصُومَ شَهْرَيْنِ مُتَتَابِعَيْنِ قَالَ لاَ قَالَ فَهَلْ تَجِدُ مَا تُطْعِمُ سِتِّينَ مِسْكِينًا قَالَ لاَ قَالَ ثُمَّ جَلَسَ فَأُتِيَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ بِعَرَقٍ فِيهِ تَمْرٌ فَقَالَ تَصَدَّقْ بِهَذَا قَالَ أَفْقَرَ مِنَّا فَمَا بَيْنَ لاَبَتَيْهَا أَهْلُ بَيْتٍ أَحْوَجُ إِلَيْهِ مِنَّا فَضَحِكَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ حَتَّى بَدَتْ أَنْيَابُهُ ثُمَّ قَالَ اذْهَبْ فَأَطْعِمْهُ أَهْلَكَ  

Yahya related to me from Malik from Ibn Shihab from Hunayd ibn Abd arRahman ibn Awf from Abu Hurayra that a man broke the fast in Ramadan and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ordered him to make kaffara by freeing a slave, or fasting two consecutive months, or feeding sixty poor people, and he said, "I can't do it." Someone brought a large basket of dates to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and he said, "Take this and give it away as sadaqa." He said, "Messenger of Allah, there is no-ne more needy than I am." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ laughed until his eye-teeth appeared, and then he said, "Eat them."

[Machine] A man broke his fast in Ramadan, so the Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded him to either free a slave, fast for two consecutive months, or feed sixty poor people. The man said he couldn't do any of these options, so the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was brought a small amount of dates, and he said, "Take this and give it in charity." The man said, "O Messenger of Allah, I don't find anyone more in need of it than myself." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then smiled until his teeth showed, and he said, "Take it."

He said, "I cannot find a way to do any of these." So the Prophet ﷺ was brought some dates, and he said, "Take this and give it in charity." The man said, "O Messenger of Allah, I cannot find anyone poorer than me." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ laughed until his molar teeth were visible, then he said, "Eat it all."

He said: Messenger of Allah, there is no poorer than I. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ thereupon laughed so that his canine teeth became visible and said: Eat it yourself. Abu Dawud said: Ibn Juraij narrated it from al-Zuhri in the wordings of the narrator Malik that a man broke his fast.
