A man came to the Prophet ﷺ and said, "I am ruined!" The Prophet ﷺ said, "Why?" He said, "I had sexual intercourse with my wife while fasting (in the month of Ramadan)." The Prophet ﷺ said to him, "Manumit a slave (as expiation)." He replied, "I cannot afford that." The Prophet ﷺ said, "Then fast for two successive months." He said, "I cannot." The Prophet ﷺ said, "Then feed sixty poor persons." He said, "I have nothing to do that." In the meantime a basket full of dates was brought to the Prophet ﷺ . He said, "Where is the questioner." The man said, "I am here." The Prophet ﷺ said (to him), "Give this (basket of dates) in charity (as expiation)." He said, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! Shall I give it to poorer people than us? By Him Who sent you with the Truth, there is no family between Medina's two mountains poorer than us." The Prophet ﷺ smiled till his pre-molar teeth became visible. He then said, "Then take it."

أَتَى النَّبِيَّ ﷺ رَجُلٌ فَقَالَ هَلَكْتُ قَالَ وَلِمَ قَالَ وَقَعْتُ عَلَى أَهْلِي فِي رَمَضَانَ قَالَ فَأَعْتِقْ رَقَبَةً قَالَ لَيْسَ عِنْدِي قَالَ فَصُمْ شَهْرَيْنِ مُتَتَابِعَيْنِ قَالَ لاَ أَسْتَطِيعُ قَالَ فَأَطْعِمْ سِتِّينَ مِسْكِينًا قَالَ لاَ أَجِدُ فَأُتِيَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ بِعَرَقٍ فِيهِ تَمْرٌ فَقَالَ أَيْنَ السَّائِلُ قَالَ هَا أَنَا ذَا قَالَ تَصَدَّقْ بِهَذَا قَالَ عَلَى أَحْوَجَ مِنَّا يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ فَوَالَّذِي بَعَثَكَ بِالْحَقِّ مَا بَيْنَ لاَبَتَيْهَا أَهْلُ بَيْتٍ أَحْوَجُ مِنَّا فَضَحِكَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ حَتَّى بَدَتْ أَنْيَابُهُ قَالَ فَأَنْتُمْ إِذًا

(A man broke his fast intentionally) during Ramadan. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded him to emancipate a slave, or fast for two months, or feed sixty poor men. He said: I cannot provide. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Sit down. Thereafter a huge basket of dates ('araq) was brought to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He said: Take this and give it as sadaqah (alms). He said: Messenger of Allah, there is no poorer than I. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ thereupon laughed so that his canine teeth became visible and said: Eat it yourself. Abu Dawud said: Ibn Juraij narrated it from al-Zuhri in the wordings of the narrator Malik that a man broke his fast. This version says: You should either free a slave, or fast for two months, or provide food for sixty poor men.

أَنَّ رَجُلاً أَفْطَرَ فِي رَمَضَانَ فَأَمَرَهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ أَنْ يُعْتِقَ رَقَبَةً أَوْ يَصُومَ شَهْرَيْنِ مُتَتَابِعَيْنِ أَوْ يُطْعِمَ سِتِّينَ مِسْكِينًا قَالَ لاَ أَجِدُ فَقَالَ لَهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ اجْلِسْ فَأُتِيَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ بِعَرَقٍ فِيهِ تَمْرٌ فَقَالَ خُذْ هَذَا فَتَصَدَّقْ بِهِ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ مَا أَحَدٌ أَحْوَجَ مِنِّي فَضَحِكَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ حَتَّى بَدَتْ أَنْيَابُهُ وَقَالَ لَهُ كُلْهُ

[Machine] A man came to the Prophet and said, "O Messenger of Allah, I am ruined!" The Prophet asked, "What happened?" The man replied, "I had an incident with my family in Ramadan." The Prophet asked, "Do you have a slave to free?" The man answered, "No." The Prophet asked, "Can you fast for two consecutive months?" The man replied, "No, O Messenger of Allah." The Prophet asked, "Can you feed sixty poor people?" The man replied, "I cannot find that, O Messenger of Allah." Then, the Prophet was given a fresh date branch and he said, "Go and give this in charity." The man asked, "Is there anyone poorer than me, O Messenger of Allah? By the one who sent you with the truth, among those who live in our neighborhood, there are people who are more in need of it than us." The Messenger of Allah laughed and then said, "Go and give it to your family."

أَنَّ رَجُلًا جَاءَ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَقَالَ هَلَكْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ قَالَ وَمَا ذَاكَ؟ قَالَ وَاقَعْتُ أَهْلِي فِي رَمَضَانَ فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ أَتَجِدُ رَقَبَةً؟ قَالَ لَا قَالَ أَتَسْتَطِيعُ أَنْ تَصُومَ شَهْرَيْنِ مُتَتَابِعَيْنِ؟ قَالَ لَا يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ قَالَ أَفَتُطْعِمُ سِتِّينَ مِسْكِينًا؟ قَالَ لَا أَجِدُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ قَالَ فَأُتِيَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ بِعَرْقٍ وَالْعَرْقُ الْمِكْتَلُ فِيهِ تَمْرٌ فقَالَ اذْهَبْ فَتَصَدَّقْ بِهَذا فَقَالَ عَلَى أَفْقَرَ مِنِّي؟ وَالَّذِي بَعَثَكَ بِالْحَقِّ مَا بَيْنَ لَابَتَيْهَا أَهْلُ بَيْتٍأَحْوَجُ إِلَيْهِ مِنَّا فَضَحِكَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ ثُمَّ قَالَ اذْهَبْ بِهِ إِلَى أَهْلِكَ

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to a man and said, "Have you perished?" The man said, "What has caused my destruction?" He said, "I had sexual intercourse with my wife in the month of Ramadan." He said, "Then, free a slave." He said, "I cannot afford that." He said, "Then, fast two consecutive months." He said, "I am unable to do so." He said, "Then, feed sixty poor people." He said, "I cannot find them." Then, Allah's Messenger ﷺ was given a basket of dates, so he said, "Where is the questioner? Give this in charity." He said, "Shall I give it to someone poorer than my household, O Messenger of Allah?" By Allah, there is no household around us poorer than ours!" Then, Allah's Messenger ﷺ laughed until his molars were visible.

أَتَى رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ رَجُلٌ فَقَالَ هَلَكْتُ؟ فَقَالَ «وَمَا أَهْلَكَكَ؟» قَالَ وَاقَعْتُ امْرَأَتِي فِي شَهْرِ رَمَضَانَ قَالَ «فَأَعْتِقْ رَقَبَةً» قَالَ لَيْسَ عِنْدِي قَالَ «فَصُمْ شَهْرَيْنِ مُتَتَابِعَيْنِ» قَالَ لَا أَسْتَطِيعُ قَالَ «فَأَطْعِمْ سِتِّينَ مِسْكِينًا» قَالَ لَا أَجِدُ قَالَ فَأُتِيَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ بِعَرَقٍ فِيهِ تَمْرٌ فَقَالَ «أَيْنَ السَّائِلُ؟ تَصَدَّقْ بِهَذَا» فَقَالَ أَعَلَى أَفْقَرَ مِنْ أَهْلِي يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ؟ فَوَاللَّهِ مَا بَيْنَ لَابَتَيْهَا أَهْلُ بَيْتٍ أَفْقَرَ مِنَّا فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «فَأَنْتُمْ إِذًا» وَضَحِكَ حَتَّى بَدَتْ أَنْيَابُهُ

While we were sitting with the Prophet ﷺ a man came and said, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! I have been ruined." Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked what was the matter with him. He replied "I had sexual intercourse with my wife while I was fasting." Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked him, "Can you afford to manumit a slave?" He replied in the negative. Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked him, "Can you fast for two successive months?" He replied in the negative. The Prophet ﷺ asked him, "Can you afford to feed sixty poor persons?" He replied in the negative. The Prophet ﷺ kept silent and while we were in that state, a big basket full of dates was brought to the Prophet ﷺ . He asked, "Where is the questioner?" He replied, "I (am here)." The Prophet ﷺ said (to him), "Take this (basket of dates) and give it in charity." The man said, "Should I give it to a person poorer than I? By Allah; there is no family between its (i.e. Medina's) two mountains who are poorer than I." The Prophet ﷺ smiled till his premolar teeth became visible and then said, 'Feed your family with it." بَيْنَمَا نَحْنُ جُلُوسٌ عِنْدَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ إِذْ جَاءَهُ رَجُلٌ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ هَلَكَتُ قَالَ «وَمَا لَكَ»؟ قَالَ وَقَعْتُ عَلَى امْرَأَتِي وَأَنَا صَائِمٌ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «هَلْ تَجِدُ رَقَبَةً تُعْتِقُهَا؟ » قَالَ لَا قَالَ «فَهَلْ تَسْتَطِيعُ أَنْ تَصُومَ شَهْرَيْنِ مُتَتَابِعَيْنِ؟ » قَالَ لَا وَاللَّهِ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ قَالَ «هَلْ تَجِدُ إِطْعَامَ سِتِّينَ مِسْكِينًا؟ » قَالَ لَا يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ قَالَ فَسَكَتَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ قَالَ أَبُو هُرَيْرَةَ بَيْنَا نَحْنُ عَلَى ذَلِكَ أُتِيَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ بِعَرَقٍ فِيهِ تَمْرٌ وَالْعَرَقُ الْمِكْتَلُ فَقَالَ «أَيْنَ السَّائِلُ آنِفًا؟ خُذْ هَذَا التَّمْرَ فَتَصَدَّقْ بِهِ» فَقَالَ الرَّجُلُ عَلَى أَفْقَرَ مِنْ أَهْلِي يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ وَاللَّهِ مَا بَيْنَ لَا بَتَيْهَا يُرِيدُ الْحَرَّتَيْنِ أَهْلُ بَيْتٍ أَفْقَرُ مِنْ أَهْلِ بَيْتِي قَالَ فَضَحِكَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ حَتَّى بَدَتْ أَنْيَابُهُ ثُمَّ قَالَ «أَطْعِمْهُ أَهْلَكَ»

The Prophet ﷺ asked, "Can you feed sixty poor people?" The man replied, "I cannot find them." Then, the Prophet ﷺ was brought a basket of dates and he said, "Go, give this in charity." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ smiled and said, "Take it and give it to your family." Az-Zuhri said, "This ruling was only for that man. If a person harms his family during Ramadan today, he does not have any option but to make expiation."

[Machine] Hurayrah narrates: "A man came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, 'O Messenger of Allah, I am destroyed!' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Woe to you! What has happened?' He said, 'I engaged in sexual intercourse with my wife while I was fasting in Ramadan.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked, 'Can you find a slave to free?' He said, 'No.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked, 'Can you fast for two consecutive months?' He said, 'No.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked, 'Can you provide food for sixty poor people?' He said, 'No.' Then the Prophet ﷺ remained silent. Abu Hurayrah said, 'While we were in that state, the Prophet ﷺ was brought some dates in a container, and he said, 'Where is the man who was in need?' So, take this and give it in charity.' The man said, 'O Messenger of Allah, by Allah, the people in my house are even poorer than us.' The Prophet ﷺ laughed until his canines became visible and then said, 'Feed your family with it."

هُرَيْرَةَ يَقُولُ أَتَى رَجُلٌ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ هَلَكْتُ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ وَيْحَكَ وَمَا ذَاكَ؟ قَالَ إِنِّي وَقَعْتُ عَلَى امْرَأَتِي وَأَنَا صَائِمٌ فِي رَمَضَانَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ هَلْ تَجِدُ رَقَبَةً تُعْتِقُهَا؟ قَالَ لَا قَالَ فَهَلْ تَسْتَطِيعُ أَنْ تَصُومَ شَهْرَيْنِ مُتَتَابِعَيْنِ؟ قَالَ لَا قَالَ فَهَلْ تَجِدُ طَعَامَ سِتِّينَ مِسْكِينًا؟ قَالَ لَا فَسَكَتَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ قَالَ أَبُو هُرَيْرَةَ فَبَيْنَا نَحْنُ عَلَى ذَلِكَ إِذْ أُتِيَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ بِعَرَقٍ فِيهِ تَمْرٌ فَقَالَ أَيْنَ الرَّجُلُ آنِفًا خُذْ هَذَا فَتَصَدَّقْ بِهِ قَالَ عَلَى أَفْقَرَ مِنْ أَهْلِي يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ وَاللهِ مَا بَيْنَ لَابَتَيْهَا أَهْلُ بَيْتٍ أَفْقَرُ مِنَّا قَالَ فَضَحِكَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ حَتَّى بَدَتْ أَنْيَابُهُ ثُمَّ قَالَ أَطْعِمْهُ أَهْلَكَ وَبِمَعْنَاهُ

صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيه وَسَلَّم فقال يا رَسولَ اللهِ إنه أصاب أهله في رمضان نهارًا فقال أعتق رقبة قال ليس عندي قال صم شهرين متتابعين قال لا أستطيع قال فأطعم ستين مسكينًا قال لا أجد قال فَأَتَى رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيه وَسَلَّم بعرق فيه تمر فقال أين الرجل الذي قال ما قال آنفًا خذ هذا فتصدق به قال والذي بعثك بالحق ما بين لابيتها أهل بيت أحوج إليه منا قَالَ فَضَحِكَ رَسُول اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيه وَسَلَّم حتى رأينا نواجذه ثُمَّ قال خذها فكلها وأنفقها على عيالك
