While we were sitting with the Prophet ﷺ a man came and said, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! I have been ruined." Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked what was the matter with him. He replied "I had sexual intercourse with my wife while I was fasting." Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked him, "Can you afford to manumit a slave?" He replied in the negative. Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked him, "Can you fast for two successive months?" He replied in the negative. The Prophet ﷺ asked him, "Can you afford to feed sixty poor persons?" He replied in the negative. The Prophet ﷺ kept silent and while we were in that state, a big basket full of dates was brought to the Prophet ﷺ . He asked, "Where is the questioner?" He replied, "I (am here)." The Prophet ﷺ said (to him), "Take this (basket of dates) and give it in charity." The man said, "Should I give it to a person poorer than I? By Allah; there is no family between its (i.e. Medina's) two mountains who are poorer than I." The Prophet ﷺ smiled till his premolar teeth became visible and then said, 'Feed your family with it."

بَيْنَمَا نَحْنُ جُلُوسٌ عِنْدَ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ إِذْ جَاءَهُ رَجُلٌ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ هَلَكْتُ قَالَ مَا لَكَ قَالَ وَقَعْتُ عَلَى امْرَأَتِي وَأَنَا صَائِمٌ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ هَلْ تَجِدُ رَقَبَةً تُعْتِقُهَا قَالَ لاَ قَالَ فَهَلْ تَسْتَطِيعُ أَنْ تَصُومَ شَهْرَيْنِ مُتَتَابِعَيْنِ قَالَ لاَ فَقَالَ فَهَلْ تَجِدُ إِطْعَامَ سِتِّينَ مِسْكِينًا قَالَ لاَ قَالَ فَمَكَثَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ فَبَيْنَا نَحْنُ عَلَى ذَلِكَ أُتِيَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ بِعَرَقٍ فِيهَا تَمْرٌ وَالْعَرَقُ الْمِكْتَلُ قَالَ أَيْنَ السَّائِلُ فَقَالَ أَنَا قَالَ خُذْهَا فَتَصَدَّقْ بِهِ فَقَالَ الرَّجُلُ أَعَلَى أَفْقَرَ مِنِّي يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ فَوَاللَّهِ مَا بَيْنَ لاَبَتَيْهَا يُرِيدُ الْحَرَّتَيْنِ أَهْلُ بَيْتٍ أَفْقَرُ مِنْ أَهْلِ بَيْتِي فَضَحِكَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ حَتَّى بَدَتْ أَنْيَابُهُ ثُمَّ قَالَ أَطْعِمْهُ أَهْلَكَ

A man came to the Prophet ﷺ and said, "I had sexual intercourse with my wife on Ramadan (while fasting)." The Prophet ﷺ asked him, "Can you afford to manumit a slave?" He replied in the negative. The Prophet ﷺ asked him, "Can you fast for two successive months?" He replied in the negative. He asked him, "Can you afford to feed sixty poor persons?" He replied in the negative. (Abu Huraira added): Then a basket full of dates was brought to the Prophet ﷺ and he said (to that man), "Feed (poor people) with this by way of atonement." He said, "(Should I feed it) to poorer people than we? There is no poorer house than ours between its (Medina's) mountains." The Prophet ﷺ said, "Then feed your family with it."

عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ ؓ جَاءَ رَجُلٌ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَقَالَ إِنَّ الأَخِرَ وَقَعَ عَلَى امْرَأَتِهِ فِي رَمَضَانَ فَقَالَ أَتَجِدُ مَا تُحَرِّرُ رَقَبَةً قَالَ لاَ قَالَ فَتَسْتَطِيعُ أَنْ تَصُومَ شَهْرَيْنِ مُتَتَابِعَيْنِ قَالَ لاَ قَالَ أَفَتَجِدُ مَا تُطْعِمُ بِهِ سِتِّينَ مِسْكِينًا قَالَ لاَ قَالَ فَأُتِيَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ بِعَرَقٍ فِيهِ تَمْرٌ وَهُوَ الزَّبِيلُ قَالَ أَطْعِمْ هَذَا عَنْكَ قَالَ عَلَى أَحْوَجَ مِنَّا مَا بَيْنَ لاَبَتَيْهَا أَهْلُ بَيْتٍ أَحْوَجُ مِنَّا قَالَ فَأَطْعِمْهُ أَهْلَكَ

A man came to Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, "I am ruined." The Prophet ﷺ asked, "What do you mean?" He said, "I had a sexual intercourse with my wife during Ramadan (while fasting)." The Prophet ﷺ asked him, "Can you manumit a slave?" He replied in the negative. He then asked him, "Can you fast for two successive months continuously" He replied in the negative. The Prophet ﷺ then asked him, "Can you feed sixty poor persons?" He replied in the negative. In the meantime an Ansari came with a basket full of dates. The Prophet ﷺ said to the man, "Take it and give it in charity (as an expiation of your sin)." The man said "Should I give it to some people who are poorer than we O Messenger of Allah ﷺ? By Him Who has sent you with the Truth, there is no family between Medina's two mountains poorer than we." Messenger of Allah ﷺ told him to take it and provide his family with it."

جَاءَ رَجُلٌ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ هَلَكْتُ فَقَالَ وَمَا ذَاكَ قَالَ وَقَعْتُ بِأَهْلِي فِي رَمَضَانَ قَالَ تَجِدُ رَقَبَةً قَالَ لاَ قَالَ فَهَلْ تَسْتَطِيعُ أَنْ تَصُومَ شَهْرَيْنِ مُتَتَابِعَيْنِ قَالَ لاَ قَالَ فَتَسْتَطِيعُ أَنْ تُطْعِمَ سِتِّينَ مِسْكِينًا قَالَ لاَ قَالَ فَجَاءَ رَجُلٌ مِنَ الأَنْصَارِ بِعَرَقٍ وَالْعَرَقُ الْمِكْتَلُ فِيهِ تَمْرٌ فَقَالَ اذْهَبْ بِهَذَا فَتَصَدَّقْ بِهِ قَالَ عَلَى أَحْوَجَ مِنَّا يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ وَالَّذِي بَعَثَكَ بِالْحَقِّ مَا بَيْنَ لاَبَتَيْهَا أَهْلُ بَيْتٍ أَحْوَجُ مِنَّا قَالَ اذْهَبْ فَأَطْعِمْهُ أَهْلَكَ

A man came to the Prophet ﷺ and said, "I am ruined!" The Prophet ﷺ said, "Why?" He said, "I had sexual intercourse with my wife while fasting (in the month of Ramadan)." The Prophet ﷺ said to him, "Manumit a slave (as expiation)." He replied, "I cannot afford that." The Prophet ﷺ said, "Then fast for two successive months." He said, "I cannot." The Prophet ﷺ said, "Then feed sixty poor persons." He said, "I have nothing to do that." In the meantime a basket full of dates was brought to the Prophet ﷺ . He said, "Where is the questioner." The man said, "I am here." The Prophet ﷺ said (to him), "Give this (basket of dates) in charity (as expiation)." He said, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! Shall I give it to poorer people than us? By Him Who sent you with the Truth, there is no family between Medina's two mountains poorer than us." The Prophet ﷺ smiled till his pre-molar teeth became visible. He then said, "Then take it."

أَتَى النَّبِيَّ ﷺ رَجُلٌ فَقَالَ هَلَكْتُ قَالَ وَلِمَ قَالَ وَقَعْتُ عَلَى أَهْلِي فِي رَمَضَانَ قَالَ فَأَعْتِقْ رَقَبَةً قَالَ لَيْسَ عِنْدِي قَالَ فَصُمْ شَهْرَيْنِ مُتَتَابِعَيْنِ قَالَ لاَ أَسْتَطِيعُ قَالَ فَأَطْعِمْ سِتِّينَ مِسْكِينًا قَالَ لاَ أَجِدُ فَأُتِيَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ بِعَرَقٍ فِيهِ تَمْرٌ فَقَالَ أَيْنَ السَّائِلُ قَالَ هَا أَنَا ذَا قَالَ تَصَدَّقْ بِهَذَا قَالَ عَلَى أَحْوَجَ مِنَّا يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ فَوَالَّذِي بَعَثَكَ بِالْحَقِّ مَا بَيْنَ لاَبَتَيْهَا أَهْلُ بَيْتٍ أَحْوَجُ مِنَّا فَضَحِكَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ حَتَّى بَدَتْ أَنْيَابُهُ قَالَ فَأَنْتُمْ إِذًا

A man came to the Prophet ﷺ and said, "I have been ruined for I have had sexual relation with my wife in Ramadan (while I was fasting)" The Prophet ﷺ said (to him), "Manumit a slave." The man said, " I cannot afford that." The Prophet ﷺ said, "(Then) fast for two successive months continuously". The man said, "I cannot do that." The Prophet ﷺ said, "(Then) feed sixty poor persons." The man said, "I have nothing (to feed them with)." Then a big basket full of dates was brought to the Prophet. The Prophet ﷺ said, "Where is the questioner? Go and give this in charity." The man said, "(Shall I give this in charity) to a poorer person than l? By Allah, there is no family in between these two mountains (of Medina) who are poorer than we." The Prophet ﷺ then smiled till his premolar teeth became visible, and said, "Then (feed) your (family with it).

أَتَى رَجُلٌ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ فَقَالَ هَلَكْتُ وَقَعْتُ عَلَى أَهْلِي فِي رَمَضَانَ قَالَ أَعْتِقْ رَقَبَةً قَالَ لَيْسَ لِي قَالَ فَصُمْ شَهْرَيْنِ مُتَتَابِعَيْنِ قَالَ لاَ أَسْتَطِيعُ قَالَ فَأَطْعِمْ سِتِّينَ مِسْكِينًا قَالَ لاَ أَجِدُ فَأُتِيَ بِعَرَقٍ فِيهِ تَمْرٌ قَالَ إِبْرَاهِيمُ الْعَرَقُ الْمِكْتَلُ فَقَالَ أَيْنَ السَّائِلُ تَصَدَّقْ بِهَا قَالَ عَلَى أَفْقَرَ مِنِّي وَاللَّهِ مَا بَيْنَ لاَبَتَيْهَا أَهْلُ بَيْتٍ أَفْقَرُ مِنَّا فَضَحِكَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ حَتَّى بَدَتْ نَوَاجِذُهُ قَالَ فَأَنْتُمْ إِذًا

A man came to Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! I am ruined!" The Prophet ﷺ said, "Waihaka (May Allah be merciful to you) !" The man said, "I have done sexual intercourse with my wife while fasting in Ramadan." The Prophet ﷺ said, "Manumit a slave." The man said, " I cannot afford that. " The Prophet ﷺ said; "Then fast for two successive months." The man said, " I have no power to do so." The Prophet ﷺ said, "Then feed sixty poor persons." The man said, "I have nothing (to feed sixty persons). Later a basket full of dates were brought to the Prophet ﷺ and he said (to the man), "Take it and give it in charity." The man said, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! Shall I give it to people other than my family? By Him in Whose Hand my life is, there is nobody poorer than me in the whole city of Medina." The Prophet ﷺ smiled till his premolar teeth became visible, and said, "Take it." Az-Zuhri said (that the Prophet ﷺ said). "Wailaka."

أَنَّ رَجُلاً أَتَى رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ هَلَكْتُ قَالَ وَيْحَكَ قَالَ وَقَعْتُ عَلَى أَهْلِي فِي رَمَضَانَ قَالَ أَعْتِقْ رَقَبَةً قَالَ مَا أَجِدُهَا قَالَ فَصُمْ شَهْرَيْنِ مُتَتَابِعَيْنِ قَالَ لاَ أَسْتَطِيعُ قَالَ فَأَطْعِمْ سِتِّينَ مِسْكِينًا قَالَ مَا أَجِدُ فَأُتِيَ بِعَرَقٍ فَقَالَ خُذْهُ فَتَصَدَّقْ بِهِ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ أَعَلَى غَيْرِ أَهْلِي فَوَالَّذِي نَفْسِي بِيَدِهِ مَا بَيْنَ طُنُبَىِ الْمَدِينَةِ أَحْوَجُ مِنِّي فَضَحِكَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ حَتَّى بَدَتْ أَنْيَابُهُ قَالَ خُذْهُ

A man came to the Prophet ﷺ and said, "I am ruined!" The Prophet ﷺ said, "What is the matter with you?" He said, "I had sexual relation with my wife (while I was fasting) in Ramadan." The Prophet ﷺ said, "Have you got enough to manumit a slave?" He said, "No." The Prophet ﷺ said, "Can you fast for two successive months?" The man said, "No." The Prophet ﷺ said, "Can you feed sixty poor persons?" The man said, "No." Then the Prophet ﷺ said to him, "Sit down," and he sat down. Afterwards an 'Irq, i.e., a big basket containing dates was brought to the Prophet ﷺ and the Prophet ﷺ said to him, "Take this and give it in charity." The man said, "To poorer people than we?" On that, the Prophet ﷺ smiled till his premolar teeth became visible, and then told him, "Feed your family with it." (See Hadith No. 157, Vol 3)

جَاءَ رَجُلٌ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَقَالَ هَلَكْتُ قَالَ مَا شَأْنُكَ قَالَ وَقَعْتُ عَلَى امْرَأَتِي فِي رَمَضَانَ قَالَ تَسْتَطِيعُ تُعْتِقُ رَقَبَةً قَالَ لاَ قَالَ فَهَلْ تَسْتَطِيعُ أَنْ تَصُومَ شَهْرَيْنِ مُتَتَابِعَيْنِ قَالَ لاَ قَالَ فَهَلْ تَسْتَطِيعُ أَنْ تُطْعِمَ سِتِّينَ مِسْكِينًا قَالَ لاَ قَالَ اجْلِسْ فَجَلَسَ فَأُتِيَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ بِعَرَقٍ فِيهِ تَمْرٌ وَالْعَرَقُ الْمِكْتَلُ الضَّخْمُ قَالَ خُذْ هَذَا فَتَصَدَّقْ بِهِ قَالَ أَعَلَى أَفْقَرَ مِنَّا فَضَحِكَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ حَتَّى بَدَتْ نَوَاجِذُهُ قَالَ أَطْعِمْهُ عِيَالَكَ

A man came to Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, "I am ruined!" The Prophet ﷺ said to him, "What is the matter?" He said, "I have done a sexual relation with my wife (while fasting) in Ramadan." The Prophet said to him?" "Can you afford to manumit a slave?" He said, "No." The Prophet ﷺ said, "Can you fast for two successive months?" He said, "No." The Prophet ﷺ said, "Can you feed sixty poor persons?" He said, "No." Then an Ansari man came with an Irq (a big basket full of dates). The Prophet said (to the man), "Take this (basket) and give it in charity." That man said, "To poorer people than we, O Messenger of Allah ﷺ? By Him Who has sent you with the Truth! There is no house in between the two mountains (of the city of Medina) poorer than we." So the Prophet ﷺ said (to him), "Go and feed it to your family."

جَاءَ رَجُلٌ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ هَلَكْتُ فَقَالَ وَمَا ذَاكَ قَالَ وَقَعْتُ بِأَهْلِي فِي رَمَضَانَ قَالَ تَجِدُ رَقَبَةً قَالَ لاَ قَالَ هَلْ تَسْتَطِيعُ أَنْ تَصُومَ شَهْرَيْنِ مُتَتَابِعَيْنِ قَالَ لاَ قَالَ فَتَسْتَطِيعُ أَنْ تُطْعِمَ سِتِّينَ مِسْكِينًا قَالَ لاَ قَالَ فَجَاءَ رَجُلٌ مِنَ الأَنْصَارِ بِعَرَقٍ وَالْعَرَقُ الْمِكْتَلُ فِيهِ تَمْرٌ فَقَالَ اذْهَبْ بِهَذَا فَتَصَدَّقْ بِهِ قَالَ عَلَى أَحْوَجَ مِنَّا يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ وَالَّذِي بَعَثَكَ بِالْحَقِّ مَا بَيْنَ لاَبَتَيْهَا أَهْلُ بَيْتٍ أَحْوَجُ مِنَّا ثُمَّ قَالَ اذْهَبْ فَأَطْعِمْهُ أَهْلَكَ

جَاءَ رَجُلٌ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَقَالَ هَلَكْتُ قَالَ وَمَا شَأْنُكَ قَالَ وَقَعْتُ عَلَى امْرَأَتِي فِي رَمَضَانَ قَالَ هَلْ تَجِدُ مَا تُعْتِقُ رَقَبَةً قَالَ لاَ قَالَ فَهَلْ تَسْتَطِيعُ أَنْ تَصُومَ شَهْرَيْنِ مُتَتَابِعَيْنِ قَالَ لاَ قَالَ فَهَلْ تَسْتَطِيعُ أَنْ تُطْعِمَ سِتِّينَ مِسْكِينًا قَالَ لاَ أَجِدُ فَأُتِيَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ بِعَرَقٍ فِيهِ تَمْرٌ فَقَالَ خُذْ هَذَا فَتَصَدَّقْ بِهِ فَقَالَ أَعَلَى أَفْقَرَ مِنَّا مَا بَيْنَ لاَبَتَيْهَا أَفْقَرُ مِنَّا ثُمَّ قَالَ خُذْهُ فَأَطْعِمْهُ أَهْلَكَ

Messenger of Allah, I am undone. He (the Holy Prophet) said: What has brought about your ruin? He said: I have had intercourse with my wife during the month of Ramadan. Upon this he (the Holy prophet) said: Can you find a slave to set him free? He said: NO He (the Prophet again) said: Can you observe fast for two consecutive months? He said: No. He (the Holy Prophet) said: Can you provide food to sixty poor people?, He said: No. He then sat down and (in the meanwhile) there was brought to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ a basket which contained dates. He (the Holy Prophet) said: Give these (dates) in charity. He (the man) said: Am I to give to one who is poorer than I? There is no family poorer than mine between the two lava plains of Medina. The Apostle of Allah ﷺ laughed so that his molar teeth became visible and said: Go and give it to your family to eat.

جَاءَ رَجُلٌ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَقَالَ هَلَكْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ قَالَ وَمَا أَهْلَكَكَ قَالَ وَقَعْتُ عَلَى امْرَأَتِي فِي رَمَضَانَ قَالَ هَلْ تَجِدُ مَا تُعْتِقُ رَقَبَةً قَالَ لاَ قَالَ فَهَلْ تَسْتَطِيعُ أَنْ تَصُومَ شَهْرَيْنِ مُتَتَابِعَيْنِ قَالَ لاَ قَالَ فَهَلْ تَجِدُ مَا تُطْعِمُ سِتِّينَ مِسْكِينًا قَالَ لاَ قَالَ ثُمَّ جَلَسَ فَأُتِيَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ بِعَرَقٍ فِيهِ تَمْرٌ فَقَالَ تَصَدَّقْ بِهَذَا قَالَ أَفْقَرَ مِنَّا فَمَا بَيْنَ لاَبَتَيْهَا أَهْلُ بَيْتٍ أَحْوَجُ إِلَيْهِ مِنَّا فَضَحِكَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ حَتَّى بَدَتْ أَنْيَابُهُ ثُمَّ قَالَ اذْهَبْ فَأَطْعِمْهُ أَهْلَكَ

A man came to the Prophet ﷺ and said: I am undone. He asked him: What has happened to you ? He said: I had intercourse with my wife in Ramadan (while I was fasting). He asked: Can you set a slave free ? He said: No. He again asked: Can you fast for two consecutive months ? He said: No. He asked: Can you provide food for sixty poor people ? He said: No. He said: Sit down. Then a huge basket containing dates ('araq) was brought to the Prophet ﷺ. He then said to him: Give it as sadaqah (i.e. alms). He said: Messenger of Allah, there is no poorer family than mine between the two lave plains of it (Medina). The Messenger of Allah ﷺ laughed so that his eye-teeth became visible, and said: Give it to your family to eat. Musaddad said in another place: "his canine teeth".

أَتَى رَجُلٌ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ فَقَالَ هَلَكْتُ فَقَالَ مَا شَأْنُكَ قَالَ وَقَعْتُ عَلَى امْرَأَتِي فِي رَمَضَانَ قَالَ فَهَلْ تَجِدُ مَا تُعْتِقُ رَقَبَةً قَالَ لاَ قَالَ فَهَلْ تَسْتَطِيعُ أَنْ تَصُومَ شَهْرَيْنِ مُتَتَابِعَيْنِ قَالَ لاَ قَالَ فَهَلْ تَسْتَطِيعُ أَنْ تُطْعِمَ سِتِّينَ مِسْكِينًا قَالَ لاَ قَالَ اجْلِسْ فَأُتِيَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ بِعَرَقٍ فِيهِ تَمْرٌ فَقَالَ تَصَدَّقْ بِهِ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ مَا بَيْنَ لاَبَتَيْهَا أَهْلُ بَيْتٍ أَفْقَرَ مِنَّا فَضَحِكَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ حَتَّى بَدَتْ ثَنَايَاهُ قَالَ فَأَطْعِمْهُ إِيَّاهُمْ وَقَالَ مُسَدَّدٌ فِي مَوْضِعٍ آخَرَ أَنْيَابُهُ

(A man broke his fast intentionally) during Ramadan. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded him to emancipate a slave, or fast for two months, or feed sixty poor men. He said: I cannot provide. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Sit down. Thereafter a huge basket of dates ('araq) was brought to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He said: Take this and give it as sadaqah (alms). He said: Messenger of Allah, there is no poorer than I. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ thereupon laughed so that his canine teeth became visible and said: Eat it yourself. Abu Dawud said: Ibn Juraij narrated it from al-Zuhri in the wordings of the narrator Malik that a man broke his fast. This version says: You should either free a slave, or fast for two months, or provide food for sixty poor men.

أَنَّ رَجُلاً أَفْطَرَ فِي رَمَضَانَ فَأَمَرَهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ أَنْ يُعْتِقَ رَقَبَةً أَوْ يَصُومَ شَهْرَيْنِ مُتَتَابِعَيْنِ أَوْ يُطْعِمَ سِتِّينَ مِسْكِينًا قَالَ لاَ أَجِدُ فَقَالَ لَهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ اجْلِسْ فَأُتِيَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ بِعَرَقٍ فِيهِ تَمْرٌ فَقَالَ خُذْ هَذَا فَتَصَدَّقْ بِهِ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ مَا أَحَدٌ أَحْوَجَ مِنِّي فَضَحِكَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ حَتَّى بَدَتْ أَنْيَابُهُ وَقَالَ لَهُ كُلْهُ

A man came and said: "O Messenger of Allah; I am ruined!" He said: "What has ruined you?" He said: "I had sexual relations with my wife during Ramadan." He said: "Are you able to free a slave?" He said, "No." He said: "Then are you able to fast for two consecutive months?" He said, "No." He said: "Then are you able to feed sixty needy people?" He said, "No." He said: "Sit." So he sat. A big basket full of dates was brought to the Prophet, and he said: "Give it in charity." So he said: "There is no one needier than us between its two mountains." So the Prophet laughing until his pre-molar teeth appeared, and he said: "Then take it to feed your family."

يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ هَلَكْتُ قَالَ وَمَا أَهْلَكَكَ قَالَ وَقَعْتُ عَلَى امْرَأَتِي فِي رَمَضَانَ قَالَ هَلْ تَسْتَطِيعُ أَنْ تُعْتِقَ رَقَبَةً قَالَ لاَ قَالَ فَهَلْ تَسْتَطِيعُ أَنْ تَصُومَ شَهْرَيْنِ مُتَتَابِعَيْنِ قَالَ لاَ قَالَ فَهَلْ تَسْتَطِيعُ أَنْ تُطْعِمَ سِتِّينَ مِسْكِينًا قَالَ لاَ قَالَ اجْلِسْ فَجَلَسَ فَأُتِيَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ بِعَرَقٍ فِيهِ تَمْرٌ وَالْعَرَقُ الْمِكْتَلُ الضَّخْمُ قَالَ تَصَدَّقْ بِهِ فَقَالَ مَا بَيْنَ لاَبَتَيْهَا أَحَدٌ أَفْقَرَ مِنَّا قَالَ فَضَحِكَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ حَتَّى بَدَتْ أَنْيَابُهُ قَالَ فَخُذْهُ فَأَطْعِمْهُ أَهْلَكَ قَالَ وَفِي الْبَابِ عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ وَعَائِشَةَ وَعَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَمْرٍو

Salman bin Sakhr Al-Ansari - from Banu Bayadah - said that his wife was like the back of his mother to him until Ramadan passed. After half of Ramadan had passed he had intercourse with his wife during the night. So he went to the Messenger of Allah to mention that to him. The Messenger of Allah said to him: "Free a slave." He said: "I don't have one." So he said: "Then fast two consecutive months." He said: "I am unable." He said: "Feed sixty needy people." He said: "I can not." So the Messenger of Allah said to Farwah bin Amr: "Give him that Araq - and it is a large basket that holds fifteen or sixteen Sa - to feed sixty needy people."

أَنَّ سَلْمَانَ بْنَ صَخْرٍ الأَنْصَارِيَّ أَحَدَ بَنِي بَيَاضَةَ جَعَلَ امْرَأَتَهُ عَلَيْهِ كَظَهْرِ أُمِّهِ حَتَّى يَمْضِيَ رَمَضَانُ فَلَمَّا مَضَى نِصْفٌ مِنْ رَمَضَانَ وَقَعَ عَلَيْهَا لَيْلاً فَأَتَى رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَذَكَرَ ذَلِكَ لَهُ فَقَالَ لَهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ أَعْتِقْ رَقَبَةً قَالَ لاَ أَجِدُهَا قَالَ فَصُمْ شَهْرَيْنِ مُتَتَابِعَيْنِ قَالَ لاَ أَسْتَطِيعُ قَالَ أَطْعِمْ سِتِّينَ مِسْكِينًا قَالَ لاَ أَجِدُ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ لِفَرْوَةَ بْنِ عَمْرٍو أَعْطِهِ ذَلِكَ الْعَرَقَ وَهُوَ مِكْتَلٌ يَأْخُذُ خَمْسَةَ عَشَرَ صَاعًا أَوْ سِتَّةَ عَشَرَ صَاعًا فَقَالَ أَطْعِمْ سِتِّينَ مِسْكِينًا

“A man came to the Prophet ﷺ and said: ‘I am doomed.’ He said: ‘Why are you doomed?’ He said: ‘I had intercourse with my wife in Ramadan.’ The Prophet ﷺ said: ‘Free a slave.’ He said: ‘I cannot.’ He said: ‘Fast for two consecutive months.’ He said: ‘I cannot.’ He said: ‘Feed sixty poor persons.’ He said: ‘I cannot.’ He said: ‘Sit down.’ So he sat down, and while doing so a basketful of dates was brought. The Prophet ﷺ said: ‘Go and give this in charity.’ He said: ‘O Messenger of Allah, by the One Who sent you with the truth, there is no household between its two lava fields (i.e., in Al-Madinah) that is more in need of it than us.’ He said: ‘Then go and feed your family.’” Another chain from Abu Hurairah with additional words: "Then he (the Prophet SAW) said: "And fast a day in its place."

أَتَى النَّبِيَّ ﷺ رَجُلٌ فَقَالَ هَلَكْتُ قَالَ وَمَا أَهْلَكَكَ؟ قَالَ وَقَعْتُ عَلَى امْرَأَتِي فِي رَمَضَانَ فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ أَعْتِقْ رَقَبَةً قَالَ لاَ أَجِدُهَا قَالَ صُمْ شَهْرَيْنِ مُتَتَابِعَيْنِ قَالَ لاَ أُطِيقُ قَالَ أَطْعِمْ سِتِّينَ مِسْكِينًا قَالَ لاَ أَجِدُ قَالَ اجْلِسْ فَجَلَسَ فَبَيْنَمَا هُوَ كَذَلِكَ إِذْ أُتِيَ بِمِكْتَلٍ يُدْعَى الْعَرَقَ فَقَالَ اذْهَبْ فَتَصَدَّقْ بِهِ قَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ وَالَّذِي بَعَثَكَ بِالْحَقِّ مَا بَيْنَ لاَبَتَيْهَا أَهْلُ بَيْتٍ أَحْوَجُ إِلَيْهِ مِنَّا قَالَ فَانْطَلِقْ فَأَطْعِمْهُ عِيَالَكَ حَدَّثَنَا حَرْمَلَةُ بْنُ يَحْيَى حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ وَهْبٍ حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْجَبَّارِ بْنُ عُمَرَ حَدَّثَنِي يَحْيَى بْنُ سَعِيدٍ عَنِ ابْنِ الْمُسَيَّبِ عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ عَنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ بِذَلِكَ فَقَالَ وَصُمْ يَوْمًا مَكَانَهُ

[AI] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to a man and said, "Have you perished?" The man said, "What has caused my destruction?" He said, "I had sexual intercourse with my wife in the month of Ramadan." He said, "Then, free a slave." He said, "I cannot afford that." He said, "Then, fast two consecutive months." He said, "I am unable to do so." He said, "Then, feed sixty poor people." He said, "I cannot find them." Then, Allah's Messenger ﷺ was given a basket of dates, so he said, "Where is the questioner? Give this in charity." He said, "Shall I give it to someone poorer than my household, O Messenger of Allah?" By Allah, there is no household around us poorer than ours!" Then, Allah's Messenger ﷺ laughed until his molars were visible.

أَتَى رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ رَجُلٌ فَقَالَ هَلَكْتُ؟ فَقَالَ «وَمَا أَهْلَكَكَ؟» قَالَ وَاقَعْتُ امْرَأَتِي فِي شَهْرِ رَمَضَانَ قَالَ «فَأَعْتِقْ رَقَبَةً» قَالَ لَيْسَ عِنْدِي قَالَ «فَصُمْ شَهْرَيْنِ مُتَتَابِعَيْنِ» قَالَ لَا أَسْتَطِيعُ قَالَ «فَأَطْعِمْ سِتِّينَ مِسْكِينًا» قَالَ لَا أَجِدُ قَالَ فَأُتِيَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ بِعَرَقٍ فِيهِ تَمْرٌ فَقَالَ «أَيْنَ السَّائِلُ؟ تَصَدَّقْ بِهَذَا» فَقَالَ أَعَلَى أَفْقَرَ مِنْ أَهْلِي يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ؟ فَوَاللَّهِ مَا بَيْنَ لَابَتَيْهَا أَهْلُ بَيْتٍ أَفْقَرَ مِنَّا فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «فَأَنْتُمْ إِذًا» وَضَحِكَ حَتَّى بَدَتْ أَنْيَابُهُ

[AI] While we were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, a man came and began pulling his hair and cursing himself. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked him, "What is the matter with you?" He replied, "I had a sexual encounter with my wife during Ramadan." The Prophet ﷺ said, "Free a slave." He replied, "I cannot find one." The Prophet ﷺ said, "Observing two consecutive months of fasting." He replied, "I am unable to do so." The Prophet ﷺ said, "Feed sixty poor people." He replied, "I cannot find them." Then, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was presented with a container containing fifteen sā' of dates. He said, "Take this and feed sixty poor people on your behalf." The man said, "O Messenger of Allah, there are people in my town who are more in need than us." The Prophet ﷺ replied, "You and your family are from them."

بَيْنَمَا نَحْنُ عِنْدَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ إِذْ جَاءَ رَجُلٌ يَنْتِفُ شَعَرَهُ وَيَدْعُو وَيْلَهُ فَقَالَ لَهُ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ مَا لَكَ؟ قَالَ وَقَعَ عَلَى امْرَأَتِهِ فِي رَمَضَانَ قَالَ أَعْتِقْ رَقَبَةً قَالَ لَا أَجِدُهَا قَالَ صُمْ شَهْرَيْنِ مُتَتَابِعَيْنِ قَالَ لَا أَسْتَطِيعُ قَالَ أَطْعِمْ سِتِّينَ مِسْكِينًا قَالَ لَا أَجِدُ قَالَ فَأُتِيَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ بِعَرَقٍ فِيهِ خَمْسَةَ عَشَرَ صَاعًا مِنْ تَمْرٍ قَالَ خُذْ هَذَا فَأَطْعِمْهُ عَنْكَ سِتِّينَ مِسْكِينًا قَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ مَا بَيْنَ لَابَتَيْهَا أَهْلُ بَيْتٍ أَفْقَرُ مِنَّا قَالَ كُلْهُ أَنْتَ وَعِيَالُكَ

A man came to the Prophet ﷺ and said: I am undone. He asked him: What has happened to you ? He said: I had intercourse with my wife in Ramadan (while I was fasting). He asked: Can you set a slave free ? He said: No. He again asked: Can you fast for two consecutive months ? He said: No. He asked: Can you provide food for sixty poor people ? He said: No. He said: Sit down. Then a huge basket containing dates ('araq) was brought to the Prophet ﷺ. He then said to him: Give it as sadaqah (i.e. alms). He said: Messenger of Allah, there is no poorer family than mine between the two lave plains of it (Medina). The Messenger of Allah ﷺ laughed so that his eye-teeth became visible, and said: Give it to your family to eat. Musaddad said in another place: "his canine teeth". (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 2390)

أَنَّ رَجُلًا أَتَى النَّبِيَّ ﷺ فَقَالَ هَلَكْتُ قَالَ وَمَا أَهْلَكَكَ؟ قَالَ وَقَعْتُ عَلَى امْرَأَتِي فِي رَمَضَانَ فَقَالَ أَتَجِدُ رَقَبَةً؟ قَالَ لَا قَالَ تَسْتَطِيعُ أَنْ تَصُومَ شَهْرَيْنِ مُتَتَابِعَيْنِ؟ قَالَ لَا قَالَ تَسْتَطِيعُ تُطْعِمُ سِتِّينَ مِسْكِينًا؟ قَالَ لَا قَالَ اجْلِسْ فَأُتِيَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ بِعَرْقٍ فِيهِ تَمْرٌ وَالْعَرْقُ الْمِكْتَلُ الضَّخْمُ قَالَ تَصَدَّقْ بِهَذَا قَالَ عَلَى أَفْقَرَ مِنَّا؟ مَا بَيْنَ لَابَتَيْهَا أَفْقَرُ مِنَّا قَالَ فَضَحِكَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ وَقَالَ أَطْعِمْهُ أَهْلَكَ وَقَالَ مَرَّةً فَتَبَسَّمَ حَتَّى بَدَتْ أَنْيَابُهُ وَقَالَ أَطْعِمْهُ عِيَالَكَ

[AI] A man came to the Prophet and said, "O Messenger of Allah, I am ruined!" The Prophet asked, "What happened?" The man replied, "I had an incident with my family in Ramadan." The Prophet asked, "Do you have a slave to free?" The man answered, "No." The Prophet asked, "Can you fast for two consecutive months?" The man replied, "No, O Messenger of Allah." The Prophet asked, "Can you feed sixty poor people?" The man replied, "I cannot find that, O Messenger of Allah." Then, the Prophet was given a fresh date branch and he said, "Go and give this in charity." The man asked, "Is there anyone poorer than me, O Messenger of Allah? By the one who sent you with the truth, among those who live in our neighborhood, there are people who are more in need of it than us." The Messenger of Allah laughed and then said, "Go and give it to your family."

أَنَّ رَجُلًا جَاءَ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَقَالَ هَلَكْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ قَالَ وَمَا ذَاكَ؟ قَالَ وَاقَعْتُ أَهْلِي فِي رَمَضَانَ فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ أَتَجِدُ رَقَبَةً؟ قَالَ لَا قَالَ أَتَسْتَطِيعُ أَنْ تَصُومَ شَهْرَيْنِ مُتَتَابِعَيْنِ؟ قَالَ لَا يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ قَالَ أَفَتُطْعِمُ سِتِّينَ مِسْكِينًا؟ قَالَ لَا أَجِدُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ قَالَ فَأُتِيَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ بِعَرْقٍ وَالْعَرْقُ الْمِكْتَلُ فِيهِ تَمْرٌ فقَالَ اذْهَبْ فَتَصَدَّقْ بِهَذا فَقَالَ عَلَى أَفْقَرَ مِنِّي؟ وَالَّذِي بَعَثَكَ بِالْحَقِّ مَا بَيْنَ لَابَتَيْهَا أَهْلُ بَيْتٍأَحْوَجُ إِلَيْهِ مِنَّا فَضَحِكَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ ثُمَّ قَالَ اذْهَبْ بِهِ إِلَى أَهْلِكَ

[AI] A man broke his fast in Ramadan, so the Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded him to either free a slave, fast for two consecutive months, or feed sixty poor people. The man said he couldn't do any of these options, so the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was brought a small amount of dates, and he said, "Take this and give it in charity." The man said, "O Messenger of Allah, I don't find anyone more in need of it than myself." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then smiled until his teeth showed, and he said, "Take it."

أَنَّ رَجُلًا أَفْطَرَ فِي رَمَضَانَ فَأَمَرَهُ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ أَنْ يُكَفِّرَ بِعِتْقِ رَقَبَةٍ أَوْ صِيَامِ شَهْرَيْنِ أَوْ إِطْعَامِ سِتِّينَ مِسْكِينًا قَالَ لَا أَجِدُ فَأُتِيَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ بِعَرَقٍ مِنْ تَمْرٍ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ خُذْ هَذَا فَتَصَدَّقْ بِهِ قَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ مَا أَجِدُ أَحْوَجَ مِنِّي قَالَ فَضَحِكَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ حَتَّى بَدَتْ أَنْيَابُهُقَالَ خُذْهُ

[AI] An Arab man came, slapping his face and tearing out his hair, and said, "I see nothing but destruction for myself." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked him, "What has caused your destruction?" He replied, "I have harmed my family during Ramadan." The Prophet ﷺ asked him, "Are you able to free a slave?" He replied, "No." The Prophet ﷺ asked him, "Are you able to fast for two consecutive months?" He replied, "No." The Prophet ﷺ asked him, "Are you able to feed sixty poor people?" He replied, "No." Then, the need was mentioned and the Prophet ﷺ was brought a sack containing fifteen measures of dates. The Prophet ﷺ said, "Where is the man?" The man replied, "Feed this to my family." The Prophet ﷺ said, "There is no one between the two sides of the garment who is more in need of this than you." The Prophet ﷺ laughed until his molar teeth could be seen and said, "Feed it to your family."

أَنَّ أَعْرَابِيًّا جَاءَ يَلْطِمُ وَجْهَهُ وَيَنْتِفُ شَعَرَهُ وَيَقُولُ مَا أُرَانِي إِلَّا قَدْ هَلَكْتُ فَقَالَ لَهُ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ وَمَا أَهْلَكَكَ؟ قَالَ أَصَبْتُ أَهْلِي فِي رَمَضَانَ قَالَ أَتَسْتَطِيعُ أَنْ تُعْتِقَ رَقَبَةً؟ قَالَ لَا قَالَ أَتَسْتَطِيعُ أَنْ تَصُومَ شَهْرَيْنِ مُتَتَابِعَيْنِ؟ قَالَ لَا قَالَ أَتَسْتَطِيعُ أَنْ تُطْعِمَ سِتِّينَ مِسْكِينًا؟ قَالَ لَا وَذَكَرَ الْحَاجَةَ قَالَ فَأُتِيَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ بِزِنْبِيلٍ وَهُوَ الْمِكْتَلُ فِيهِ خَمْسَةَ عَشَرَ صَاعًا أَحْسَبُهُ تَمْرًا قَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ أَيْنَ الرَّجُلُ؟ قَالَ أَطْعِمْ هَذَا قَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ مَا بَيْنَ لَابَتَيْهَا أَحَدٌ أَحْوَجُ مِنَّا أَهْلُ بَيْتٍ قَالَ فَضَحِكَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ حَتَّى بَدَتْ أَنْيَابُهُ قَالَ أَطْعِمْهُ أَهْلَكَ

Yahya related to me from Malik from Ibn Shihab from Hunayd ibn Abd arRahman ibn Awf from Abu Hurayra that a man broke the fast in Ramadan and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ordered him to make kaffara by freeing a slave, or fasting two consecutive months, or feeding sixty poor people, and he said, "I can't do it." Someone brought a large basket of dates to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and he said, "Take this and give it away as sadaqa." He said, "Messenger of Allah, there is no-ne more needy than I am." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ laughed until his eye-teeth appeared, and then he said, "Eat them."

Yahya related to me from Malik from Ata ibn Abdullah al-Khurasani that Said ibn al-Musayyab said, "A bedouin came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ beating his breast and tearing out his hair and saying, 'I am destroyed.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Why is that?', and he said, 'I had intercourse with my wife while fasting in Ramadan.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked him, 'Are you able to free a slave?', and the man said, 'No.' Then he asked him, 'Are you able to give away a camel?', and the man replied, 'No.' He said, 'Sit own,' and someone brought a large basket of dates to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and he said to the man, 'Take this and give it away as sadaqa.' The man said, 'There is no one more needy than me,' and (the Messenger of Allah ﷺ), said, 'Eat them, and fast one day for the day when you had intercourse.' " Malik said that Ata said that he had asked Said ibn al-Musayyab how many dates there were in that basket, and he said, "Between fifteen and twenty sas.''

أَنَّهُ قَالَ جَاءَ أَعْرَابِيٌّ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَضْرِبُ نَحْرَهُ وَيَنْتِفُ شَعْرَهُ وَيَقُولُ هَلَكَ الأَبْعَدُ فَقَالَ لَهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ وَمَا ذَاكَ فَقَالَ أَصَبْتُ أَهْلِي وَأَنَا صَائِمٌ فِي رَمَضَانَ فَقَالَ لَهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ هَلْ تَسْتَطِيعُ أَنْ تُعْتِقَ رَقَبَةً فَقَالَ لاَ فَقَالَ هَلْ تَسْتَطِيعُ أَنْ تُهْدِيَ بَدَنَةً قَالَ لاَ قَالَ فَاجْلِسْ فَأُتِيَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ بِعَرَقِ تَمْرٍ فَقَالَ خُذْ هَذَا فَتَصَدَّقْ بِهِ فَقَالَ مَا أَحَدٌ أَحْوَجَ مِنِّي فَقَالَ كُلْهُ وَصُمْ يَوْمًا مَكَانَ مَا أَصَبْتَ قَالَ مَالِكٌ قَالَ عَطَاءٌ فَسَأَلْتُ سَعِيدَ بْنَ الْمُسَيَّبِ كَمْ فِي ذَلِكَ الْعَرَقِ مِنَ التَّمْرِ فَقَالَ مَا بَيْنَ خَمْسَةَ عَشَرَ صَاعًا إِلَى عِشْرِينَ

[AI] A man fasted in Ramadan, so the Prophet ﷺ commanded him to atone by freeing a slave, or fasting for two consecutive months, or feeding sixty poor people. He said, "I cannot find a way to do any of these." So the Prophet ﷺ was brought some dates, and he said, "Take this and give it in charity." The man said, "O Messenger of Allah, I cannot find anyone poorer than me." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ laughed until his molar teeth were visible, then he said, "Eat it all."

أَنَّ رَجُلًا أَفْطَرَ فِي رَمَضَانَ فَأَمَرَهُ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ أَنْ يُكَفِّرَ بِعِتْقِ رَقَبَةٍ أَوْ صِيَامِ شَهْرَيْنِ أَوْ إِطْعَامِ سِتِّينَ مِسْكِينًا قَالَ لَا أَجِدُ فَأُتِيَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ بِعَرَقِ تَمْرٍ فَقَالَ «خُذْ هَذَا فَتَصَدَّقْ بِهِ» فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ مَا أَجِدُ أَحَدًا أَحْوَجَ مِنِّي فَضَحِكَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ حَتَّى بَدَتْ أَنْيَابُهُ ثُمَّ قَالَ «كُلْهُ»

A man came to the Prophet ﷺ and said: I am undone. He asked him: What has happened to you ? He said: I had intercourse with my wife in Ramadan (while I was fasting). He asked: Can you set a slave free ? He said: No. He again asked: Can you fast for two consecutive months ? He said: No. He asked: Can you provide food for sixty poor people ? He said: No. He said: Sit down. Then a huge basket containing dates ('araq) was brought to the Prophet ﷺ. He then said to him: Give it as sadaqah (i.e. alms). He said: Messenger of Allah, there is no poorer family than mine between the two lave plains of it (Medina). The Messenger of Allah ﷺ laughed so that his eye-teeth became visible, and said: Give it to your family to eat. Musaddad said in another place: "his canine teeth". [AI] "A man said, 'O Messenger of Allah, I have been ruined!' He asked, 'What happened?' The man said, 'I accidentally slept with my wife during a day in the month of Ramadan.' The Prophet said, 'Free a slave.' The man replied, 'I cannot afford it.' The Prophet said, 'Then fast for two consecutive months.' The man said, 'I am unable to do that.' The Prophet said, 'Then feed sixty poor people.' The man said, 'I cannot find that many.' The Prophet then brought a basket filled with fifteen saa' worth of dates and said, 'Then give this in charity.' The man replied, 'I swear, the poorest person in my family is more in need of it than my family.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ smiled until his teeth were visible and said, 'Take it and seek forgiveness from Allah, and feed your family with it.'"

رَجُلٌ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ هَلَكَتُ قَالَ «وَيْحَكَ وَمَا ذَاكَ؟ » قَالَ وَقَعَتُ عَلَى امْرَأَتِي فِي يَوْمٍ مِنْ شَهْرِ رَمَضَانَ قَالَ «أَعْتِقْ رَقَبَةً» قَالَ مَا أَجِدُ قَالَ «فَصُمْ شَهْرَيْنِ مُتَتَابِعَيْنِ» قَالَ مَا أَسْتَطِيعُ قَالَ «أَطْعِمْ سِتِّينَ مِسْكِينًا» قَالَ مَا أَجِدُ قَالَ فَأُتِيَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ بِعَرَقٍ فِيهِ خَمْسَةَ عَشَرَ صَاعًا مِنْ تَمْرٍ فَقَالَ لَهُ «فَتَصَدَّقْ بِهِ» قَالَ عَلَى أَفْقَرَ مِنْ أَهْلِي مَا بَيْنَ لَابَتَيِ الْمَدِينَةِ أَحْوَجُ مِنْ أَهْلِي فَضَحِكَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ حَتَّى بَدَتْ أَنْيَابُهُ وَقَالَ «خُذْهُ وَاسْتَغْفَرِ اللَّهَ وَأَطْعِمْهُ أَهْلَكَ»

[AI] A man said: "O Messenger of Allah, I have lost everything!" He asked: "And what is that?" The man said: "It fell upon my wife on a day in the month of Ramadan." He said: "Free a slave." The man said: "I do not have one." The Prophet said: "Then fast for two consecutive months." The man said: "I am not capable of doing so." He said: "Then feed sixty poor people." The man said: "I cannot find them." So, the Prophet ﷺ was brought a basket of dates and he said: "Take this and give it in charity." The man said: "O Messenger of Allah, it is on someone other than my family." The Prophet ﷺ laughed until his teeth were visible, and then he said: "Take it and seek forgiveness from your Lord."

رَجُلٌ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ هَلَكَتُ قَالَ «وَمَا ذَاكَ؟ » قَالَ وَقَعَتُ عَلَى امْرَأَتِي فِي يَوْمٍ مِنْ شَهْرِ رَمَضَانَ قَالَ «أَعْتِقْ رَقَبَةً» قَالَ مَا أَجِدُهَا قَالَ «صُمْ شَهْرَيْنِ مُتَتَابِعَيْنِ» قَالَ لَا أَسْتَطِيعُ قَالَ «فَأَطْعِمْ سِتِّينَ مِسْكِينًا» قَالَ لَا أَجِدُ قَالَ فَأُتِيَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ بِعَرَقٍ فَقَالَ «خُذْهُ فَتَصَدَّقْ بِهِ» فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ عَلَى غَيْرِ أَهْلِي فَوَالَّذِي نَفْسِي بِيَدِهِ مَا بَيْنَ طُنُبَيِ الْمَدِينَةِ أَحَدٌ أَفْقَرُ مِنِّي فَضَحِكَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ حَتَّى بَدَتْ أَنْيَابُهُ ثُمَّ قَالَ «خُذْهُ وَاسْتَغْفَرْ رَبِّكَ»

While we were sitting with the Prophet ﷺ a man came and said, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! I have been ruined." Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked what was the matter with him. He replied "I had sexual intercourse with my wife while I was fasting." Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked him, "Can you afford to manumit a slave?" He replied in the negative. Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked him, "Can you fast for two successive months?" He replied in the negative. The Prophet ﷺ asked him, "Can you afford to feed sixty poor persons?" He replied in the negative. The Prophet ﷺ kept silent and while we were in that state, a big basket full of dates was brought to the Prophet ﷺ . He asked, "Where is the questioner?" He replied, "I (am here)." The Prophet ﷺ said (to him), "Take this (basket of dates) and give it in charity." The man said, "Should I give it to a person poorer than I? By Allah; there is no family between its (i.e. Medina's) two mountains who are poorer than I." The Prophet ﷺ smiled till his premolar teeth became visible and then said, 'Feed your family with it." بَيْنَمَا نَحْنُ جُلُوسٌ عِنْدَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ إِذْ جَاءَهُ رَجُلٌ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ هَلَكَتُ قَالَ «وَمَا لَكَ»؟ قَالَ وَقَعْتُ عَلَى امْرَأَتِي وَأَنَا صَائِمٌ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «هَلْ تَجِدُ رَقَبَةً تُعْتِقُهَا؟ » قَالَ لَا قَالَ «فَهَلْ تَسْتَطِيعُ أَنْ تَصُومَ شَهْرَيْنِ مُتَتَابِعَيْنِ؟ » قَالَ لَا وَاللَّهِ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ قَالَ «هَلْ تَجِدُ إِطْعَامَ سِتِّينَ مِسْكِينًا؟ » قَالَ لَا يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ قَالَ فَسَكَتَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ قَالَ أَبُو هُرَيْرَةَ بَيْنَا نَحْنُ عَلَى ذَلِكَ أُتِيَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ بِعَرَقٍ فِيهِ تَمْرٌ وَالْعَرَقُ الْمِكْتَلُ فَقَالَ «أَيْنَ السَّائِلُ آنِفًا؟ خُذْ هَذَا التَّمْرَ فَتَصَدَّقْ بِهِ» فَقَالَ الرَّجُلُ عَلَى أَفْقَرَ مِنْ أَهْلِي يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ وَاللَّهِ مَا بَيْنَ لَا بَتَيْهَا يُرِيدُ الْحَرَّتَيْنِ أَهْلُ بَيْتٍ أَفْقَرُ مِنْ أَهْلِ بَيْتِي قَالَ فَضَحِكَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ حَتَّى بَدَتْ أَنْيَابُهُ ثُمَّ قَالَ «أَطْعِمْهُ أَهْلَكَ»

[AI] "He made his wife swear that she will fast until the end of Ramadan. She gained weight and sat on a raised platform. During the middle of Ramadan, he fell on her. The Prophet came to him as if he admired that and said to him, 'Can you free a slave?' He said, 'No.' He said, 'Can you fast for two consecutive months?' He said, 'No.' He said, 'Can you feed sixty poor people?' He said, 'No.' So the Prophet said, 'O Thawban bin 'Amr, give him that difference.' He had a heap of dates and took fifteen sa' from it. So he should give it to sixty poor people.' He said, 'Is there anyone more destitute than me?' By the One Who has sent you with the truth, there are people who have a house but are more in need of it than us.' So the Messenger of Allah laughed and said, 'Take it to your family.'"

أَنَّهُ جَعَلَ امْرَأَتَهُ عَلَيْهِ كَظَهْرِ أُمِّهِ حَتَّى يَمْضِيَ رَمَضَانُ فَسَمِنَتْ وَتَرَبَّعَتْ فَوَقَعَ عَلَيْهَا فِي النِّصْفِ مِنْ رَمَضَانَ فَأَتَى النَّبِيَّ ﷺ كَأَنَّهُ يُعَظِّمُ ذَلِكَ فَقَالَ لَهُ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ «هَلْ تَسْتَطِيعُ أَنَّ تُعْتِقَ رَقَبَةً؟» قَالَ لَا قَالَ «أَتَسْتَطِيعُ أَنَّ تَصُومَ شَهْرَيْنِ مُتَتَابِعَيْنِ؟» قَالَ لَا قَالَ «أَفَتَسْتَطِيعُ أَنْ تُطْعِمَ سِتِّينَ مِسْكِينًا؟» قَالَ لَا فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ «يَا فَرْوَةُ بْنَ عَمْرٍو أَعْطِهِ ذَلِكَ الْفَرَقَ وَهُوَ مِكْتَلٌ يَأْخُذُ خَمْسَةَ عَشَرَ صَاعًا فَلْيُعْطِهِ سِتِّينَ مِسْكِينًا» قَالَ أَعْلَى أَفْقَرَ مِنِّي؟ فَوَالَّذِي بَعَثَكَ بِالْحَقِّ مَا بَيْنَ لَابَيَتْهَا أَهْلُ بَيْتٍ أَحْوَجُ إِلَيْهِ مِنَّا فَضَحِكَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ ثُمَّ قَالَ «اذْهَبْ بِهِ إِلَى أَهْلِكَ»

[AI] And he (referring to someone) came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and mentioned that to him, so he (the Messenger of Allah) said to him, "Free a slave." He said, "I don't have the means to do so." He (the Messenger of Allah) said, "Can you fast for two consecutive months?" He said, "No." He (the Messenger of Allah) said, "Then feed sixty poor people." He said, "I can't find that." So he (the Messenger of Allah) said to Furwah bin Amr, who used to dry dates under the supervision of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , "Give him that bag." It contained fifteen sa' of dates. He (the Messenger of Allah) said, "Go and feed sixty poor people."

وَأَنَّهُ أَتَى رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ فَذَكَرَ ذَلِكَ لَهُ فَقَالَ «أَعْتِقْ رَقَبَةً» قَالَ لَا أَجِدُ قَالَ «تَسْتَطِيعُ أَنْ تَصُومَ شَهْرَيْنِ مُتَتَابِعَيْنِ؟» قَالَ لَا قَالَ «فَأَطْعِمْ سِتِّينَ مِسْكِينًا» قَالَ لَا أَجِدُ فَقَالَ لِفَرْوَةَ بْنِ عَمْرٍو وَكَانَ يَخْرُصُ النَّخْلَ عَلَى عَهْدِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ «أَعْطِهِ ذَلِكَ الزِّنْبِيلَ» فِيهِ خَمْسَةَ عَشَرَ صَاعًا مِنْ تَمْرٍ قَالَ «اذْهَبْ فَأَطْعِمْ سِتِّينَ مِسْكِينًا»

[AI] Salman bin Sakhr al-Bayadi made a vow to his wife that he would not approach her until Ramadan was over. When half of Ramadan passed, she gained weight and became attractive to him. So, he covered her at night, and then he went to the Prophet ﷺ and asked him about this. The Prophet ﷺ said, "Free a slave." Salman replied that he couldn't afford it. The Prophet ﷺ said, "Fast for two consecutive months." Salman said that he was unable to do so. The Prophet ﷺ said, "Feed sixty poor people." Salman replied that he couldn't find that many. Then, someone brought the Prophet ﷺ a container containing fifteen or sixteen saa' of dates and the Prophet ﷺ said, "Take it and give it in charity to sixty poor people."

أَنَّ سَلْمَانَ بْنَ صَخْرٍ الْبَيَاضِيَّ جَعَلَ امْرَأَتَهُ عَلَيْهِ كَظَهْرِ أُمِّهِ إِنْ غَشِيَهَا حَتَّى يَمْضِيَ رَمَضَانُ فَلَمَّا مَضَى النِّصْفُ مِنْ رَمَضَانَ سَمُنَتْ وَتَرَبَّعَتْ فَأَعْجَبَتْهُُ فَغَشَاهَا لَيْلًا فَأَتَى النَّبِيَّ ﷺ فَسَأَلَهُ عَنْ ذَلِكَ؟ فَقَالَ «أَعْتِقْ رَقَبَةً» قَالَ لَا أَجِدُ قَالَ «صُمْ شَهْرَيْنِ مُتَتَابِعَيْنِ» قَالَ لَا أَسْتَطِيعُ قَالَ «أَطْعِمْ سِتِّينَ مِسْكِينًا» قَالَ لَا أَجِدُ فَأُتِيَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ بِفَرَقٍ فِيهِ خَمْسَةَ عَشَرَ صَاعًا مِنْ تَمْرٍ أَوْ سِتَّةَ عَشَرَ صَاعًا مِنْ تَمْرٍ فَقَالَ «خُذْهَا فَتَصَدَّقْ بِهِ عَلَى سِتِّينَ مِسْكِينًا»

(A man broke his fast intentionally) during Ramadan. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded him to emancipate a slave, or fast for two months, or feed sixty poor men. He said: I cannot provide. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Sit down. Thereafter a huge basket of dates ('araq) was brought to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He said: Take this and give it as sadaqah (alms). He said: Messenger of Allah, there is no poorer than I. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ thereupon laughed so that his canine teeth became visible and said: Eat it yourself. Abu Dawud said: Ibn Juraij narrated it from al-Zuhri in the wordings of the narrator Malik that a man broke his fast. The man said, "No." The Prophet ﷺ said, "Can you feed sixty poor persons?" The man said, "No." Then the Prophet ﷺ said to him, "Sit down," and he sat down. Afterwards an 'Irq, i.e., a big basket containing dates was brought to the Prophet ﷺ and the Prophet ﷺ said to him, "Take this and give it in charity." The man said, "To poorer people than we?" On that, the Prophet ﷺ smiled till his premolar teeth became visible, and then told him, "Feed your family with it." (See Hadith No. 157, Vol 3) (Using translation from Bukhārī 6709)

جَاءَ رَجُلٌ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَقَالَ إِنَّ الْآخَرَ وَقَعَ عَلَى امْرَأَتِهِ فِي رَمَضَانَ فَقَالَ لَهُ «أَتَجِدُ مَا تُحَرِّرُ رَقَبَةً؟» قَالَ لَا قَالَ «أَتَسْتَطِيعُ أَنْ تَصُومَ شَهْرَيْنِ مُتَتَابِعَيْنِ؟» قَالَ لَا قَالَ «فَتَجِدُ مَا تُطْعِمُ سِتِّينَ مِسْكِينًا؟» قَالَ لَا فَأُتِيَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ بِعَرَقٍ فِيهِ تَمْرٌ وَهُوَ الزَّنْبِيلُ فَقَالَ «أَطْعِمْ هَذَا عَنْكَ» قَالَ أَحْوَجُ مِنَّا؟ قَالَ «فَأَطْعِمْهُ أَهْلَكَ»

[AI] A man came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and informed him that he had committed adultery with his wife during Ramadan. The Prophet asked him, "Do you have a slave to free (as expiation)?" The man replied, "No." The Prophet then asked, "Can you fast for two consecutive months?" The man again replied, "No." The Prophet then said, "Feed sixty poor people." The man replied, "I cannot find that many." So, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ gave him a date and instructed him to give it in charity. The man mentioned his need to the Prophet, who then ordered him to take the date for himself.

أَنَّ رَجُلًا أَتَى رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ فَأَخْبَرَهُ أَنَّهُ وَقَعَ بِامْرَأَتِهِ فِي رَمَضَانَ قَالَ «هَلْ تَجِدُ رَقَبَةً؟» قَالَ لَا قَالَ «هَلْ تَسْتَطِيعُ صِيَامَ شَهْرَيْنِ مُتَتَابِعَيْنِ؟» قَالَ لَا قَالَ «فَأَطْعِمْ سِتِّينَ مِسْكِينًا» قَالَ لَا أَجِدُ فَأَعْطَاهُ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ تَمْرًا «فَأَمَرَهُ أَنْ يَتَصَدَّقَ بِهِ فَذَكَرَ لِرَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ حَاجَتَهُ فَأَمَرَهُ أَنْ يَأْخُذَهُ هُوَ»

(A man broke his fast intentionally) during Ramadan. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded him to emancipate a slave, or fast for two months, or feed sixty poor men. He said: I cannot provide. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Sit down. Thereafter a huge basket of dates ('araq) was brought to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He said: Take this and give it as sadaqah (alms). He said: Messenger of Allah, there is no poorer than I. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ thereupon laughed so that his canine teeth became visible and said: Eat it yourself. Abu Dawud said: Ibn Juraij narrated it from al-Zuhri in the wordings of the narrator Malik that a man broke his fast. This version says: You should either free a slave, or fast for two months, or provide food for sixty poor men. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 2392)

أَنْ رَجُلًا أَفْطَرَ فِي رَمَضَانَ فِي زَمَانِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ «فَأَمَرَهُ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهِ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَنْ يُكَفِّرَ بِعِتْقِ رَقَبَةٍ أَوْ صِيَامِ شَهْرَيْنِ أَوْ إِطْعَامِ سِتِّينَ مِسْكِينًا» قَالَ فَقَالَ لَا أَجِدُ فَأُتِي النَّبِيُّ ﷺ بِعَرَقِ تَمْرٍ فَقَالَ «خُذْ هَذَا فَتَصَدَّقَ بِهِ» فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ لَا أَجِدُ أَحْوَجَ إِلَيْهِ مِنِّي فَقَالَ فَضَحِكَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ حَتَّى بَدَتْ أَنْيَابُهُ ثُمَّ قَالَ «كُلْهِ»

A man came to the Prophet ﷺ and said: I am undone. He asked him: What has happened to you ? He said: I had intercourse with my wife in Ramadan (while I was fasting). He asked: Can you set a slave free ? He said: No. He again asked: Can you fast for two consecutive months ? He said: No. He asked: Can you provide food for sixty poor people ? He said: No. He said: Sit down. Then a huge basket containing dates ('araq) was brought to the Prophet ﷺ. He then said to him: Give it as sadaqah (i.e. alms). He said: Messenger of Allah, there is no poorer family than mine between the two lave plains of it (Medina). The Messenger of Allah ﷺ laughed so that his eye-teeth became visible, and said: Give it to your family to eat. Musaddad said in another place: "his canine teeth". جَاءَ رَجُلٌ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَقَالَ هَلَكْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ قَالَ وَمَا أَهْلَكَكَ؟ قَالَ وَقَعْتُ عَلَى امْرَأَتِي فِي رَمَضَانَ قَالَ فَهَلْ تَجِدُ مَا تُعْتِقُ رَقَبَةً؟ قَالَ لَا قَالَ فَهَلْ تَسْتَطِيعُ أَنْ تَصُومَ شَهْرَيْنِ مُتَتَابِعَيْنِ؟ قَالَ لَا قَالَ فَهَلْ تَجِدْ مَا تُطْعِمُ سِتِّينَ مِسْكِينًا؟ قَالَ لَا قَالَ ثُمَّ جَلَسَ فَأُتِيَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ بِعَرَقٍ فِيهِ تَمْرٌ فَقَالَ تَصَدَّقْ بِهَذَا فَقَالَ أَفْقَرُ مِنَّا فَمَا بَيْنَ لَابَتَيْهَا بَيْتٌ أَحْوَجُ إِلَيْهِ مِنَّا فَضَحِكَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ حَتَّى بَدَتْ أَنْيَابُهُ ثُمَّ قَالَ لَهُ اذْهَبْ فَأَطْعِمْهُ أَهْلَكَ

[AI] A man came to the Prophet ﷺ and said, "Indeed, the other man has had intercourse with his wife in Ramadan." The Prophet said to him, "Do you find a slave to free?" He replied, "No." The Prophet asked, "Can you fast for two consecutive months?" He replied, "No." The Prophet asked, "Do you find sixty needy people to feed?" He replied, "No." Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was brought a container of dates, and he said, "Give this in charity on his behalf." The man said, "The people of my household are more in need of it than us." The Prophet said, "Feed your family." Muhammad ibn Muslim said, "This was only permit for him. So whoever experiences a similar situation should do as he was commanded."

جَاءَ رَجُلٌ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَقَالَ إِنَّ الْآخَرَ وَقَعَ عَلَى امْرَأَتِهِ فِي رَمَضَانَ فَقَالَ لَهُ أَتَجِدُ مَا تُحَرِّرُ رَقَبَةً؟ قَالَ لَا قَالَ فَهَلْ تَسْتَطِيعُ أَنْ تَصُومَ شَهْرَيْنِ مُتَتَابِعَيْنِ؟ قَالَ لَا قَالَ فَهَلْ تَجِدُ مَا تُطْعِمُ سِتِّينَ مِسْكِينًا؟ قَالَ لَا قَالَ فَأُتِيَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ بِعَرَقٍ فِيهِ تَمْرٌ وَهُوَ الزِّنْبِيلُ فَقَالَ أَطْعِمْ هَذَا عَنْكَ فَقَالَ مَا بَيْنَ لَابَتَيْهَا أَهْلُ بَيْتٍ أَحْوَجُ مِنَّا قَالَ أَطْعِمْهُ أَهْلَكَ قَالَ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ مُسْلِمٍ إِنَّمَا كَانَتْ رُخْصَةً لِهَذَا فَمَنْ أَصَابَ مِثْلَ مَا أَصَابَ فَلْيَصْنَعْ مَا أُمِرَ بِهِ

[AI] A man came to the Prophet ﷺ and said, "O Messenger of Allah, I have committed adultery with my wife during Ramadan." He said, "Free a slave." The man replied, "I do not have the means to do so." The Prophet ﷺ said, "Then fast for two consecutive months." The man replied, "I am unable to do that." The Prophet ﷺ said, "Then feed sixty poor people." The man replied, "I cannot find sixty poor people." Then a basket containing fifteen kilograms of dates was brought to the Prophet ﷺ , and he said, "Take it and feed them on your behalf." The man said, "O Messenger of Allah, the people in between our houses are more in need of it than us." The Prophet ﷺ said, "Take it and feed your family, and that is how you will fulfill your obligation."

أَنَّ رَجُلًا أَتَى النَّبِيَّ ﷺ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ إِنِّي وَقَعْتُ بِامْرَأَتِي فِي رَمَضَانَ فَقَالَ أَعْتِقْ رَقَبَةً قَالَ لَا أَجِدُهَا قَالَ صُمْ شَهْرَيْنِ مُتَتَابِعَيْنِ قَالَ لَا أَسْتَطِيعُ قَالَ فَأَطْعِمْ سِتِّينَ مِسْكِينًا قَالَ لَا أَجِدُ فَأُتِيَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ بِمِكْتَلٍ فِيهِ خَمْسَةَ عَشَرَ صَاعًا مِنْ تَمْرٍ قَالَ فَخُذْهَا فَأَطْعِمْهُ عَنْكَ قَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ مَا بَيْنَ لَابَتَيْهَا أَهْلُ بَيْتٍ أَحْوَجُ إِلَيْهِ مِنَّا قَالَ خُذْهُ فَأَطْعِمْهُ أَهْلَكَ وَكَذَلِكَ

[AI] A man came to the Prophet ﷺ and said, "O Messenger of Allah, I have ruined myself." The Prophet ﷺ asked, "What happened?" The man replied, "I have harmed my family during Ramadan." The Prophet ﷺ asked, "Do you have a slave?" The man replied, "No, O Messenger of Allah." The Prophet ﷺ asked, "Can you fast for two consecutive months?" The man replied, "No, O Messenger of Allah." The Prophet ﷺ asked, "Can you feed sixty poor people?" The man replied, "I cannot find them." Then, the Prophet ﷺ was brought a basket of dates and he said, "Go, give this in charity." The man said, "There are people poorer than me. By the One who has sent you with the truth, there are people in more need of this than us." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ smiled and said, "Take it and give it to your family." Az-Zuhri said, "This ruling was only for that man. If a person harms his family during Ramadan today, he does not have any option but to make expiation."

أَنَّ رَجُلًا أَتَى النَّبِيَّ ﷺ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ هَلَكْتُ قَالَ وَمَا ذَاكَ؟ قَالَ أَصَبْتُ أَهْلِي فِي رَمَضَانَ قَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ أَتَجِدُ رَقَبَةً؟ قَالَ لَا يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ قَالَ أَفَتَسْتَطِيعُ أَنْ تَصُومَ شَهْرَيْنِ مُتَتَابِعَيْنِ؟ قَالَ لَا يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ قَالَ أَفَتَسْتَطِيعُ أَنْ تُطْعِمَ سِتِّينَ مِسْكِينًا؟ قَالَ لَا أَجِدُهُ قَالَ فَأُتِيَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ بِعَرَقٍ فِيهِ تَمْرٌ قَالَ اذْهَبْ فَتَصَدَّقْ بِهَذَا فَقَالَ عَلَى أَفْقَرَ مِنِّي وَالَّذِي بَعَثَكَ بِالْحَقِّ مَا بَيْنَ لَابَتَيْهَا أَهْلُ بَيْتٍ أَحْوَجُ إِلَيْهِ مِنَّا قَالَ فَضَحِكَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ ثُمَّ قَالَ اذْهَبْ بِهِ إِلَى أَهْلِكَ قَالَ الزُّهْرِيُّ وَإِنَّمَا كَانَ هَذَا رُخْصَةً لِلرَّجُلِ وَحْدَهُ وَلَوْ أَنَّ رَجُلًا أَصَابَ أَهْلَهُ فِي رَمَضَانَ الْيَوْمَ لَمْ يَكُنْ لَهُ إِلَّا أَنْ يُكَفِّرَ

While we were sitting with the Prophet ﷺ a man came and said, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! I have been ruined." Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked what was the matter with him. He replied "I had sexual intercourse with my wife while I was fasting." Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked him, "Can you afford to manumit a slave?" He replied in the negative. Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked him, "Can you fast for two successive months?" He replied in the negative. The Prophet ﷺ asked him, "Can you afford to feed sixty poor persons?" He replied in the negative. The Prophet ﷺ kept silent and while we were in that state, a big basket full of dates was brought to the Prophet ﷺ . He asked, "Where is the questioner?" He replied, "I (am here)." The Prophet ﷺ said (to him), "Take this (basket of dates) and give it in charity." The man said, "Should I give it to a person poorer than I? By Allah; there is no family between its (i.e. Medina's) two mountains who are poorer than I." The Prophet ﷺ smiled till his premolar teeth became visible and then said, 'Feed your family with it." بَيْنَا نَحْنُ جُلُوسٌ عِنْدَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ إِذْ جَاءَهُ رَجُلٌ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ هَلَكْتُ فَقَالَ لَهُ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ مَا لَكَ؟ قَالَ وَقَعْتُ عَلَى امْرَأَتِي وَأَنَا صَائِمٌ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ هَلْ تَجِدُ رَقَبَةً تُعْتِقُهَا؟ فَقَالَ لَا فَقَالَ فَهَلْ تَسْتَطِيعُ أَنْ تَصُومَ شَهْرَيْنِ مُتَتَابِعَيْنِ؟ قَالَ لَا قَالَ فَهَلْ تَجِدُ إِطْعَامَ سِتِّينَ مِسْكِينًا؟ قَالَ لَا فَسَكَتَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَ أَبُو هُرَيْرَةَ فَبَيْنَا نَحْنُ عِنْدَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ إِذْ أُتِيَ بِعَرَقٍ فِيهِ تَمْرٌ وَالْعَرَقُ الْمِكْتَلُ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ أَيْنَ السَّائِلُ آنِفًا خُذْ هَذَا التَّمْرَ فَتَصَدَّقْ فَقَالَ الرَّجُلُ أَعَلَى أَفْقَرَ مِنِّي يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ فَوَاللهِ مَا بَيْنَ لَابَتَيْهَا يُرِيدُ الْحَرَّتَيْنِ أَهْلُ بَيْتٍ أَفْقَرُ مِنْ أَهْلِ بَيْتِي قَالَ فَضَحِكَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ حَتَّى بَدَتْ أَنْيَابُهُ ثُمَّ قَالَ أَطْعِمْهُ أَهْلَكَ

[AI] A man said, "O Messenger of Allah, I have perished." He (the Prophet) said, "Woe to you! What happened?". The man said, "I fell upon my family on a day in the month of Ramadan." He (the Prophet) said, "Free a slave." The man said, "I cannot find one." He (the Prophet) said, "Then fast for two consecutive months." The man said, "I am not able to do that." He (the Prophet) said, "Then feed sixty poor people." The man said, "I cannot find (enough)." He (the Prophet) said, "Then bring a basket of dates, it contains fifteen saa' (a unit of measurement)." He (the Prophet) said, "Take it and give it in charity." The man said, "To someone who is poorer than my family? By Allah, between the two lava plains of Medina there is none poorer than my family." The Messenger of Allah laughed until his canines were visible. He (the Prophet) said, "Take it and seek forgiveness from Allah, and feed your family with it." And so on.

قَالَ رَجُلٌ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ هَلَكْتُ قَالَ وَيْحَكَ وَمَا ذَاكَ ؟ قَالَ وَقَعْتُ عَلَى أَهْلِي فِي يَوْمٍ مِنْ شَهْرِ رَمَضَانَ قَالَ أَعْتِقْ رَقَبَةً قَالَ مَا أَجِدُهَا قَالَ فَصُمْ شَهْرَيْنِ مُتَتَابِعَيْنِ قَالَ مَا أَسْتَطِيعُ قَالَ أَطْعِمْ سِتِّينَ مِسْكِينًا قَالَ مَا أَجِدُ قَالَ فَأُتِيَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ بِعَرَقٍ فِيهِ تَمْرٌ خَمْسَةَ عَشَرَ صَاعًا قَالَ خُذْهُ فَتَصَدَّقْ بِهِ قَالَ عَلَى أَفْقَرَ مِنْ أَهْلِي فَوَاللهِ مَا بَيْنَ لَابَتَيِ الْمَدِينَةِ أَحْوَجُ مِنْ أَهْلِي قَالَ فَضَحِكَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ حَتَّى بَدَتْ أَنْيَابُهُ قَالَ خُذْهُ وَاسْتَغْفَرِ اللهَ وَأَطْعِمْهُ أَهْلَكَ وَكَذَلِكَ

[AI] Hurayrah narrates: "A man came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, 'O Messenger of Allah, I am destroyed!' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Woe to you! What has happened?' He said, 'I engaged in sexual intercourse with my wife while I was fasting in Ramadan.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked, 'Can you find a slave to free?' He said, 'No.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked, 'Can you fast for two consecutive months?' He said, 'No.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked, 'Can you provide food for sixty poor people?' He said, 'No.' Then the Prophet ﷺ remained silent. Abu Hurayrah said, 'While we were in that state, the Prophet ﷺ was brought some dates in a container, and he said, 'Where is the man who was in need?' So, take this and give it in charity.' The man said, 'O Messenger of Allah, by Allah, the people in my house are even poorer than us.' The Prophet ﷺ laughed until his canines became visible and then said, 'Feed your family with it."

هُرَيْرَةَ يَقُولُ أَتَى رَجُلٌ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ هَلَكْتُ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ وَيْحَكَ وَمَا ذَاكَ؟ قَالَ إِنِّي وَقَعْتُ عَلَى امْرَأَتِي وَأَنَا صَائِمٌ فِي رَمَضَانَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ هَلْ تَجِدُ رَقَبَةً تُعْتِقُهَا؟ قَالَ لَا قَالَ فَهَلْ تَسْتَطِيعُ أَنْ تَصُومَ شَهْرَيْنِ مُتَتَابِعَيْنِ؟ قَالَ لَا قَالَ فَهَلْ تَجِدُ طَعَامَ سِتِّينَ مِسْكِينًا؟ قَالَ لَا فَسَكَتَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ قَالَ أَبُو هُرَيْرَةَ فَبَيْنَا نَحْنُ عَلَى ذَلِكَ إِذْ أُتِيَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ بِعَرَقٍ فِيهِ تَمْرٌ فَقَالَ أَيْنَ الرَّجُلُ آنِفًا خُذْ هَذَا فَتَصَدَّقْ بِهِ قَالَ عَلَى أَفْقَرَ مِنْ أَهْلِي يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ وَاللهِ مَا بَيْنَ لَابَتَيْهَا أَهْلُ بَيْتٍ أَفْقَرُ مِنَّا قَالَ فَضَحِكَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ حَتَّى بَدَتْ أَنْيَابُهُ ثُمَّ قَالَ أَطْعِمْهُ أَهْلَكَ وَبِمَعْنَاهُ

[AI] A man broke his fast during the month of Ramadan, so the Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded him to either free a slave, fast for two consecutive months, or feed sixty needy people. The man said that he could not find any means to do so, so he went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ with a basket of dates. The Messenger told him to give it as charity. The man said, "O Messenger of Allah, I do not find anyone more in need of it than myself." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ smiled until his molars were visible, then he said, "Eat it."

أَنَّ رَجُلًا أَفْطَرَ فِي شَهْرِ رَمَضَانَ فَأَمَرَهُ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ بِعِتْقِ رَقَبَةٍ أَوْ صِيَامِ شَهْرَيْنِ أَوْ إِطْعَامِ سِتِّينَ مِسْكِينًا قَالَ إِنِّي لَا أَجِدُ فَأُتِيَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ بِعَرَقِ تَمْرٍ فَقَالَ خُذْ هَذَا فَتَصَدَّقْ بِهِ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ مَا أَجِدُ أَحْوَجَ مِنِّي فَضَحِكَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ حَتَّى بَدَتْ ثَنَايَاهُ ثُمَّ قَالَ كُلْهُ

[AI] A man said, "O Messenger of Allah, I have perished." He asked, "What is the matter?" The man replied, "I accidentally had relations with my wife during the day in Ramadan." The Prophet replied, "Free a slave." The man said, "I cannot find one." The Prophet then said, "Fast for two consecutive months." The man said, "I am not able to do that." The Prophet then said, "Feed sixty poor people." The man said, "I cannot find that either." Then, a container of dates was brought to the Prophet, containing fifteen wasqs (a measure of capacity). The Prophet said, "Take it and give it in charity." The man said, "Should I give it to someone poorer than my family? By Allah, there is no family in Medina poorer than mine." The Prophet laughed until his molars were visible and said, "Take it and seek forgiveness from Allah, and feed your family with it." And so on.

قَالَ رَجُلٌ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ هَلَكْتُ قَالَ وَيْحَكَ وَمَا ذَاكَ؟ قَالَ وَقَعْتُ عَلَى أَهْلِي فِي يَوْمٍ مِنْ شَهْرِ رَمَضَانَ قَالَ أَعْتِقْ رَقَبَةً قَالَ مَا أَجِدُهَا قَالَ فَصُمْ شَهْرَيْنِ مُتَتَابِعَيْنِ قَالَ مَا أَسْتَطِيعُ قَالَ أَطْعِمْ سِتِّينَ مِسْكِينًا قَالَ مَا أَجِدُ قَالَ فَأُتِيَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ بِعَرَقٍ فِيهِ تَمْرٌ خَمْسَةَ عَشَرَ صَاعًا قَالَ خُذْهُ فَتَصَدَّقْ بِهِ قَالَ عَلَى أَفْقَرَ مِنْ أَهْلِي فَوَاللهِ مَا بَيْنَ لَابَتَيِ الْمَدِينَةِ أَحْوَجُ مِنْ أَهْلِي قَالَ فَضَحِكَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ حَتَّى بَدَتْ أَنْيَابُهُ فَقَالَ خُذْهُ وَاسْتَغْفِرِ اللهَ وَأَطْعِمْ أَهْلَكَ وَكَذَلِكَ

[AI] A man came to the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and said, "O Messenger of Allah, I have committed a grave sin." The Prophet responded, "What have you done?! May Allah have mercy on you!" The man said, "I had sexual intercourse with my wife during Ramadan." The Prophet advised him, "Free a slave, but if you cannot find one, then fast for two consecutive months." The man replied, "I am not capable of doing so." The Prophet then instructed him, "Feed sixty poor people." The man said, "I cannot find them." At that moment, someone brought a container filled with dates to the Prophet and he said, "Take it and give it in charity." The man then said, "O Messenger of Allah, is there anyone in greater need than my family? By the One in whose hand is my soul, there is no one between the two mountain slopes of Madinah more in need than me." The Prophet smiled until his teeth became visible and he said, "Take it and seek forgiveness from Allah, your Lord." Amr ibn Shu'ayb reported that they brought a large container holding fifteen measures [of dates] to the Prophet. Al-Isma'ili did not mention anyone among them except Amr ibn Shu'ayb ibn al-Mubarak. Al-Haql said, "Someone brought five measures [of dates] in a container." Duhaym said, "Woe to you! What is the matter?" The man replied, "I had sexual intercourse with my wife during a day in Ramadan." The man then brought to the Prophet a container filled with fifteen measures [of dates]. The sheikh [narrator] stopped here.

أَنَّ رَجُلًا أَتَى النَّبِيَّ ﷺ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ هَلَكْتُ قَالَ وَيْحَكَ مَا صَنَعْتَ؟ قَالَ وَقَعْتُ عَلَى أَهْلِي فِي رَمَضَانَ قَالَ أَعْتِقْ رَقَبَةً قَالَ مَا أَجِدُهَا قَالَ صُمْ شَهْرَيْنِ مُتَتَابِعَيْنِ قَالَ لَا أَسْتَطِيعُ قَالَ فَأَطْعِمْ سِتِّينَ مِسْكِينًا قَالَ مَا أَجِدُ فَأُتِيَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ بِعَرَقٍ قَالَ خُذْهُ فَتَصَدَّقْ بِهِ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ أَعَلَى غَيْرِ أَهْلِي فَوَالَّذِي نَفْسِي بِيَدِهِ مَا بَيْنَ طُنْبَيِ الْمَدِينَةِ وَقَالَ عَمْرُو بْنُ شُعَيْبٍ مَا بَيْنَ لَابَتَيِ الْمَدِينَةِ أَحَدٌ أَحْوَجُ مِنِّي فَضَحِكَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ حَتَّى بَدَتْ أَسْنَانُهُ ثُمَّ قَالَ خُذْهُ وَاسْتَغْفِرِ اللهَ رَبَّكَ وَقَالَ عَمْرُو بْنُ شُعَيْبٍ فَأُتِيَ بِمِكْتَلٍ فِيهِ خَمْسَةَ عَشَرَ صَاعًا قَالَ الْإِسْمَاعِيلِيُّ لَمْ يَذْكُرْ أَحَدٌ مِنْهُمْ عَمْرَو بْنَ شُعَيْبٍ غَيْرُ ابْنِ الْمُبَارَكِ وَقَالَ الْهِقْلُ بِعَرَقٍ فِيهِ خَمْسَةَ عَشَرَ صَاعًا قَالَ دُحَيْمٌ وَيْحَكَ وَمَا ذَاكَ؟ قَالَ وَقَعْتُ عَلَى أَهْلِي فِي يَوْمٍ مِنْ شَهْرِ رَمَضَانَ فَأُتِيَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ بِعَرَقٍ فِيهِ خَمْسَةَ عَشَرَ صَاعًا قَالَ الشَّيْخُ

[AI] It is narrated that Salamah ibn Sakhr al-Bayadi made a condition with his wife that she would be like his mother's back to him, meaning he would not approach her intimately, until Ramadan passed. When half of Ramadan had passed, his wife gained weight and became beautiful to him, so he approached her intimately one night. Afterwards, he went to the Prophet ﷺ and mentioned what had happened to him. The Prophet advised him to set a slave free, but Salamah replied that he did not have one. The Prophet then advised him to fast for two consecutive months, but Salamah said he was unable to. The Prophet then advised him to feed sixty poor people, but Salamah said he could not find that many. Finally, the Prophet brought a container filled with dates, estimated to be fifteen or sixteen saa' (a type of measurement), and told him to give it as charity to sixty poor people.

أَنَّ سَلَمَةَ بْنِ صَخْرٍ الْبَيَاضِيِّ جَعَلَ امْرَأَتَهُ عَلَيْهِ كَظَهْرِ أُمِّهِ إِنْ غَشِيَهَا حَتَّى يَمْضِيَ رَمَضَانُ فَلَمَّا مَضَى النِّصْفُ مِنْ رَمَضَانَ سَمُنَتِ الْمَرْأَةُ وَتَرَبَّعَتْ فَأَعْجَبَتْهُ فَغَشِيَهَا لَيْلًا ثُمَّ أَتَى النَّبِيَّ ﷺ فَذَكَرَ ذَلِكَ لَهُ فَقَالَ أَعْتِقْ رَقَبَةً فَقَالَ لَا أَجِدُ فَقَالَ صُمْ شَهْرَيْنِ مُتَتَابِعَيْنِ فَقَالَ لَا أَسْتَطِيعُ قَالَ أَطْعِمْ سِتِّينَ مِسْكِينًا قَالَ لَا أَجِدُ قَالَ فَأُتِيَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ بِعَرَقٍ فِيهِ خَمْسَةَ عَشَرَ صَاعًا أَوْ سِتَّةَ عَشَرَ صَاعًا فَقَالَ تَصَدَّقْ بِهَذَا عَلَى سِتِّينَ مِسْكِينًا وَكَذَلِكَ

[AI] A man said, "O Messenger of Allah, I have been destroyed." He said, "What happened to you?" He replied, "I fell upon my family on a day in the month of Ramadan." He said, "Free a slave." He said, "I cannot find one." He said, "Then fast for two consecutive months." He said, "I am unable to do so." He said, "Then feed sixty poor people." He said, "I cannot find them." He said, "Then bring a basket filled with dates." The Prophet ﷺ said, "Take it and give it in charity." He said, "To someone poorer than my family? By Allah, there is no one in Medina poorer than us." The Prophet ﷺ laughed until his molar teeth showed and said, "Take it and seek forgiveness from Allah and feed your family with it."

[AI] Sa'id ibn al-Musayyib narrated that a man came to the Prophet ﷺ and said, "I have committed adultery with my wife during Ramadan." The Prophet ﷺ said, "Free a slave." The man replied, "I do not have the means to do so." The Prophet ﷺ said, "Then fast for two consecutive months." The man said, "I cannot do that either." The Prophet ﷺ said, "Then feed sixty poor people." The man replied, "I cannot find them." Then, someone brought a container filled with dates, amounting to fifteen sa' (a measurement unit) of dates, which was equivalent to sixty-four quarters of dates. The Prophet ﷺ gave it to the man and said, "Feed sixty poor people with this." The man said, "O Messenger of Allah, there are people between us who are more in need of it." The Prophet ﷺ said, "Go and feed your family with it. This is a confirmation of the connected narration, and this narration is more reliable than the narration of 'Ata' al-Khurasani from Ibn al-Musayyib with doubt in fifteen or twenty. Likewise, it has been narrated from Ibrahim ibn 'Amir from Ibn al-Musayyib with certainty in fifteen. And if Allah wills, it will be narrated in the book of oaths and traditions from the companions about the permissibility of giving a handful of food as charity to each poor person. And Allah is the Guide."

عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ الْمُسَيِّبِ أَتَى النَّبِيَّ ﷺ رَجُلٌ فَقَالَ إِنِّي وَقَعْتُ عَلَى أَهْلِي فِي رَمَضَانَ قَالَ حَرِّرْ رَقَبَةً قَالَ لَا أَجِدُ قَالَ صُمْ شَهْرَيْنِ مُتَتَابِعَيْنِ قَالَ لَا أَسْتَطِيعُ قَالَ فَتَصَدَّقْ عَلَى سِتِّينَ مِسْكِينًا قَالَ لَا أَجِدُ قَالَ فَأُتِيَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ بِمِكْتَلٍ يَكُونُ خَمْسَةَ عَشَرَ صَاعًا مِنْ تَمْرٍ يَكُونُ سِتِّينَ رَبْعًا فَأَعْطَاهُ إِيَّاهُ فَقَالَ لَهُ أَطْعِمْ هَذَا سِتِّينَ مِسْكِينًا قَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ مَا بَيْنَ لَابَتَيْهَا أَهْلُ بَيْتٍ أَحْوَجُ مِنَّا فَقَالَ لَهُ اذْهَبْ فَأَطْعِمْهُ أَهْلَكَ فِي هَذَا الْمُرْسَلِ تَأْكِيدٌ لِلرِّوَايَةِ الْمَوْصُولَةِ وَهَذَا أَوْلَى مِنْ رِوَايَةِ عَطَاءٍ الْخُرَاسَانِيِّ عَنِ ابْنِ الْمُسَيِّبِ بِالشَّكِّ فِي خَمْسَةَ عَشَرَ أَوْ عِشْرِينَ وَكَذَلِكَ رُوِيَ عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ بْنِ عَامِرٍ عَنِ ابْنِ الْمُسَيِّبِ خَمْسَةَ عَشَرَ بِلَا شَكٍّ وَسَيُرْوَى إِنْ شَاءَ اللهُ تَعَالَى فِي كِتَابِ الْأَيْمَانِ الْآثَارُ عَنِ الصَّحَابَةِ فِي جَوَازِ التَّصْدِقِ بِمُدٍّ عَلَى كُلِّ مِسْكِينٍ وَاللهُ الْمُوَفِّقُ

[AI] A man came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, "O Messenger of Allah, I have caused destruction." He ﷺ said, "Woe to you, what is that?" He said, "I had intercourse with my wife during the day in Ramadan." He ﷺ said, "Free a slave." He said, "I cannot find (a slave)." He ﷺ said, "Then fast for two consecutive months." He said, "I am unable (to do that)." He ﷺ said, "Then feed sixty poor people." He said, "I cannot find (that)." Then he came to the Prophet ﷺ with a trunk containing dates, which was equivalent to fifteen saa' (a measure of weight). The Prophet ﷺ said, "Take it and give it as charity." He said, "Shall I give it to someone needier than my family? By Allah, there is no one in Madinah more in need than my family." So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ laughed until his molars became visible, then he said, "Take it and seek forgiveness from Allah and feed your family with it." Abu Al-Hasan Al-Daraqutni, who is a reliable narrator, said, "This is an authentic chain of narration." The Shaykh said, "And likewise."
