A man came to Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! I am ruined!" The Prophet ﷺ said, "Waihaka (May Allah be merciful to you) !" The man said, "I have done sexual intercourse with my wife while fasting in Ramadan." The Prophet ﷺ said, "Manumit a slave." The man said, " I cannot afford that. " The Prophet ﷺ said; "Then fast for two successive months." The man said, " I have no power to do so." The Prophet ﷺ said, "Then feed sixty poor persons." The man said, "I have nothing (to feed sixty persons). Later a basket full of dates were brought to the Prophet ﷺ and he said (to the man), "Take it and give it in charity." The man said, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! Shall I give it to people other than my family? By Him in Whose Hand my life is, there is nobody poorer than me in the whole city of Medina." The Prophet ﷺ smiled till his premolar teeth became visible, and said, "Take it." Az-Zuhri said (that the Prophet ﷺ said). "Wailaka."

أَنَّ رَجُلاً أَتَى رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ هَلَكْتُ قَالَ وَيْحَكَ قَالَ وَقَعْتُ عَلَى أَهْلِي فِي رَمَضَانَ قَالَ أَعْتِقْ رَقَبَةً قَالَ مَا أَجِدُهَا قَالَ فَصُمْ شَهْرَيْنِ مُتَتَابِعَيْنِ قَالَ لاَ أَسْتَطِيعُ قَالَ فَأَطْعِمْ سِتِّينَ مِسْكِينًا قَالَ مَا أَجِدُ فَأُتِيَ بِعَرَقٍ فَقَالَ خُذْهُ فَتَصَدَّقْ بِهِ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ أَعَلَى غَيْرِ أَهْلِي فَوَالَّذِي نَفْسِي بِيَدِهِ مَا بَيْنَ طُنُبَىِ الْمَدِينَةِ أَحْوَجُ مِنِّي فَضَحِكَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ حَتَّى بَدَتْ أَنْيَابُهُ قَالَ خُذْهُ

A person had sexual relation with his wife in the month of Ramadan (while he was fasting), and he came to Messenger of Allah ﷺ seeking his verdict concerning that action. The Prophet ﷺ said (to him), "Can you afford to manumit a slave?" The man said, "No." The Prophet ﷺ said, "Can you fast for two successive months?" He said, "No." The Prophet ﷺ said, "Then feed sixty poor persons."

أَنَّ رَجُلاً وَقَعَ بِامْرَأَتِهِ فِي رَمَضَانَ فَاسْتَفْتَى رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ هَلْ تَجِدُ رَقَبَةً قَالَ لاَ قَالَ هَلْ تَسْتَطِيعُ صِيَامَ شَهْرَيْنِ قَالَ لاَ قَالَ فَأَطْعِمْ سِتِّينَ مِسْكِينًا

Can you find a slave (to grant him freedom)? He said: No. He (the Prophet again) said: Can you afford to observe fasts for two (consecutive) months? He said: No. He (the Holy Prophet) said: Then feed sixty poor men.

He said: Messenger of Allah, there is no poorer than I. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ thereupon laughed so that his canine teeth became visible and said: Eat it yourself. Abu Dawud said: Ibn Juraij narrated it from al-Zuhri in the wordings of the narrator Malik that a man broke his fast. This version says: You should either free a slave, or fast for two months, or provide food for sixty poor men.

Yahya related to me from Malik from Ibn Shihab from Hunayd ibn Abd arRahman ibn Awf from Abu Hurayra that a man broke the fast in Ramadan and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ordered him to make kaffara by freeing a slave, or fasting two consecutive months, or feeding sixty poor people, and he said, "I can't do it." Someone brought a large basket of dates to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and he said, "Take this and give it away as sadaqa." He said, "Messenger of Allah, there is no-ne more needy than I am." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ laughed until his eye-teeth appeared, and then he said, "Eat them."

The man said, "O Messenger of Allah, I cannot find anyone poorer than me." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ laughed until his molar teeth were visible, then he said, "Eat it all."

[AI] A man came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and informed him that he had committed adultery with his wife during Ramadan. The Messenger of Allah asked him, "Can you find a slave to free?" The man replied, "No." The Messenger of Allah asked, "Can you fast for two consecutive months?" The man replied, "No." The Messenger of Allah asked, "Can you feed sixty poor people?" The man replied, "I cannot find." So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ gave him dates and instructed him to give them in charity. The man then mentioned his need to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, so he instructed him to take the dates for himself.

أَنَّ رَجُلًا أَتَى رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَأَخْبَرَهُ أَنَّهُ وَقَعَ بِامْرَأَتِهِ فِي رَمَضَانَ فَقَالَ «هَلْ تَجِدُ رَقَبَةً؟ » قَالَ لَا قَالَ «هَلْ تَسْتَطِيعُ صِيَامَ شَهْرَيْنِ؟ » قَالَ لَا قَالَ «تُطْعِمُ سِتِّينَ مِسْكِينًا؟ » قَالَ لَا أَجِدُ فَأَعْطَاهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ تَمْرًا وَأَمَرَهُ أَنْ يَتَصَدَّقَ بِهِ قَالَ فَذَكَرَ لِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ حَاجَتَهُ فَأَمَرَهُ أَنْ يَأْخُذَهُ هُوَ

[AI] A man said: "O Messenger of Allah, I have lost everything!" He asked: "And what is that?" The man said: "It fell upon my wife on a day in the month of Ramadan." He said: "Free a slave." The man said: "I do not have one." The Prophet said: "Then fast for two consecutive months." The man said: "I am not capable of doing so." He said: "Then feed sixty poor people." The man said: "I cannot find them." So, the Prophet ﷺ was brought a basket of dates and he said: "Take this and give it in charity." The man said: "O Messenger of Allah, it is on someone other than my family." The Prophet ﷺ laughed until his teeth were visible, and then he said: "Take it and seek forgiveness from your Lord."

رَجُلٌ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ هَلَكَتُ قَالَ «وَمَا ذَاكَ؟ » قَالَ وَقَعَتُ عَلَى امْرَأَتِي فِي يَوْمٍ مِنْ شَهْرِ رَمَضَانَ قَالَ «أَعْتِقْ رَقَبَةً» قَالَ مَا أَجِدُهَا قَالَ «صُمْ شَهْرَيْنِ مُتَتَابِعَيْنِ» قَالَ لَا أَسْتَطِيعُ قَالَ «فَأَطْعِمْ سِتِّينَ مِسْكِينًا» قَالَ لَا أَجِدُ قَالَ فَأُتِيَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ بِعَرَقٍ فَقَالَ «خُذْهُ فَتَصَدَّقْ بِهِ» فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ عَلَى غَيْرِ أَهْلِي فَوَالَّذِي نَفْسِي بِيَدِهِ مَا بَيْنَ طُنُبَيِ الْمَدِينَةِ أَحَدٌ أَفْقَرُ مِنِّي فَضَحِكَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ حَتَّى بَدَتْ أَنْيَابُهُ ثُمَّ قَالَ «خُذْهُ وَاسْتَغْفَرْ رَبِّكَ»

عَن النَّبِيّ ﷺ واللفظُ لفظ مَعْمَر أَنَّ رَجُلا أَتَى النَّبِيّ ﷺ فقال يا رَسولَ اللهِ إنه أصاب أهله في رمضان نهارًا فقال أعتق رقبة قال ليس عندي قال صم شهرين متتابعين قال لا أستطيع قال فأطعم ستين مسكينًا قال لا أجد قال فَأَتَى رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ بعرق فيه تمر فقال أين الرجل الذي قال ما قال آنفًا خذ هذا فتصدق به قال والذي بعثك بالحق ما بين لابيتها أهل بيت أحوج إليه منا قَالَ فَضَحِكَ رَسُول اللَّهِ ﷺ حتى رأينا نواجذه ثُمَّ قال خذها فكلها وأنفقها على عيالك

Abu 'Abdul-Rahman (narrator) said, "This is the correct opinion, and the hadith of Ashhab from Layth is a mistake. It should be 'Ashhab narrated the hadith from Malik.'

[AI] On the authority of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , it is narrated that a man had relations with his wife during Ramadan. He then sought advice from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ regarding this matter. The Prophet ﷺ asked him, "Do you have a slave whom you can free?" He replied, "No." The Prophet ﷺ then asked him, "Are you able to fast for two consecutive months?" He replied, "No." The Prophet ﷺ then said, "Feed sixty poor persons." Ibn Bukair added in his narration that they should be consecutive days.

[AI] The Prophet ﷺ said about a man who had intimate relations with his wife during Ramadan: "Free a slave." The man replied, "I don't have the means to do so." The Prophet said, "Then fast for two consecutive months." The man said, "I am not physically capable of fasting." The Prophet said, "Then feed sixty poor people."
