61. Sacrificial Animals (6/14)
[Machine] In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
Allah, may He be praised, said: "So pray to your Lord and sacrifice." [Surah Al-Kawthar, verse 2].
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ said: "Narrated by Muhammad ibn Sulaiman Al-Anbari, from Abdul-Malik ibn Amr, from Dawud, from Amr ibn Shuaib, from his father, from his grandfather, who said: The Prophet ﷺ was asked about 'Aqiqah (sacrificial offering for a newborn). He replied: "Allah does not like disobedience, as if He hates the name. And whoever is blessed with a child and wishes to offer a sacrifice for him, let him present two sheep as a reward for a boy and one sheep for a girl."
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ was asked about 'Aqeeqah (sacrificial offering for a newborn). He responded, "I do not like disobedience. It seems as though he dislikes the name. And whoever has a child and wishes to perform 'Aqeeqah for them, then they should do so." The Sheikh, may Allah have mercy on him, said, "This is when it is combined with the first [i.e., hating the name], and he [the Prophet ﷺ] associated those two things with his love."
61.46 [Machine] What is the difference between a boy and a girl?
[Machine] "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said regarding the Aqiqah (sacrifice made for a newborn): for a baby boy, two sheep as a reward, and for a baby girl, one sheep that does not harm you, whether male or female. This was narrated by Sufyan bin 'Uyaynah from his father, and his father's mention in this hadith is doubtful."
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "A boy has two sheep, and a girl has one sheep." Abu Dawud said, "This is the hadith narrated by Sufyan, and it is doubtful." The learned jurist, may Allah have mercy on him, said, "Al-Muzani narrated it in the summarized version from Ash-Shafi'i, from Sufyan, from 'Ubaidullah ibn Abi Yazid, from Siba' ibn Wahb, from Umm Kurz, and Al-Muzani and Sufyan have doubts about it in two places. One of them is that all other narrators have narrated it from Ibn 'Uyaynah, from 'Ubaidullah ibn Abi Yazid, from his father, from Siba'. The other is that they said about it, 'Siba' ibn Thabit said, and he has narrated it."
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ said about a boy, two rewards, and about a girl, one reward. Abu Muhammad Al-Sakkari informed us from Ismail bin Muhammad Al-Saffar, who narrated from Ahmad bin Mansur, who narrated from Abdul Razzaq, who narrated from Ibn Juraij, who told me that Ata said about this Hadith, "It means for Ata, what are the two rewards?" He said, "They are the two mithlans (a type of sheep), and he prefers sheep over goats, and their males are dearer to him than females." Then he asked, "If a person slaughtered her in place, what do you think?" Ata said, "Start with the one that is named, then slaughter the rest as you wish." I said to him, "What about the Sunnah?" He said, "And the Sunnah."
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "There are two rewards."
I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: Two resembling sheep are to be sacrificed for a boy and one for a girl. AbuDawud said: I heard Ahmad (ibn Hanbal) say: The Arabic word mukafi'atani means equal (in age) or resembling each other. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 2834)
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ said, "Verily, the Jews consider the male child to be unlucky, but they do not consider the female child unlucky. So cast superstitions over male children twice as much as over female children."
61.47 [Machine] Who limited himself in the 'aqiqah' of the boy to only one sheep?
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sacrificed a ram for Hasan and a ram for Husain.
[Machine] No one asked him for a sheep for the aqiqah of his children except that he would give it to them, and he would sacrifice a sheep for each of his sons and daughters.
[Machine] "About his male and female children, [he offered] a sheep, a sheep."
61.48 [Machine] Who said: "Do not break the bones of the sacrificial animal and let its family eat from it, and be charitable and give gifts.
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ said about the Aqiqah that Fatimah held for Al-Hasan and Al-Husain (peace be upon them): "They should be sent to a midwife accompanied by a man, they should eat and feed others, and no bone should be broken from it." Abu Bakr Muhammad ibn Muhammad told us, Abu Al-Husain Al-Dawudi reported to us, narrating from Abu Ali Al-Lu'lu'i, narrating from Abu Dawud, and he mentioned it.
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , said about the boy, "He deserves two sheep as a reward," and about the girl, "She deserves one sheep." He also said, "The sheep should not have any broken bones and it should be cooked." Ata' said, "When you slaughter the animal, say, 'Bismillah' and 'Allahu Akbar.' This is the 'Aqeeqah of so-and-so." In another narration by Ibn Jurayj, it is narrated from Ata' that he said, "In the 'Aqeeqah, the animal should be slaughtered tribe by tribe and it should be cooked with water and salt. Then, it should be distributed among the neighbors." It is also narrated in this regard from Jabir ibn Abdullah, from his saying.
61.49 [Machine] The boy's blood should not be touched by anything.
[Machine] I heard my father Buraydah say, "In the time of ignorance, when one of us had a son, we would slaughter a sheep and smear its blood on his head. But when Allah brought Islam, we would slaughter a sheep, shave his head, and smear it with saffron." The scholar, may Allah have mercy on him, said, "And in the narration of Ayub ibn Musa from Yazid ibn Abdullah al-Muzani from his father, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'In the case of camels, there is a branch, and in the case of sheep, there is a branch. But it is not done for boys to touch their heads with blood.'"
[Machine] And the people of Jahiliyyah used to put cotton on the baby's head during the aqiqah ceremony. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ ordered that something else be used in place of the cotton. The scholar, may Allah have mercy on him, said about the hadith of Salman bin 'Amir, "Remove harm from him." It is possible that what is meant by harm is shaving the head, and the prohibition of touching the head with its blood.
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Every newborn child is held as a collateral with his aqiqah (sacrifice) being slaughtered on his seventh day, his head is shaved and he is given a name." Al-Hawdiyy reported in his narration: "Qatadah used to say, when asked about the blood: 'If you slaughter the aqiqah, take a handful of its wool and apply it on the fontanel of the baby until the blood flows like a thread. Then wash his head and shave it afterwards.'"
It was reported to us by Abu Ali Al-Rudhbari, who reported from Abu Bakr ibn Dastah, who said: Abu Dawud said: "This is a false claim from Hammad, a fabrication." It was reported to us by Abu Ali, who reported from Abu Bakr ibn Dastah, who reported from Abu Dawud, who reported from Ibn Al-Muthanna, who reported from Ibn Abi 'Adiy, who reported from Sa'id, the son of Abu 'Aroobah, who reported from Qatadah. He mentioned it and said: "On his seventh day, he is shaved and given a name." Abu Dawud said: "And he is given a name, which is the most correct opinion." Salam ibn Abi Muti' stated, meaning it was narrated from Qatadah, Iyas ibn Daghal and Ash'ath, from Al-Hasan.
61.50 [Machine] What happened during the time of the Aqiqah, head shaving, and naming
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ said: "Aqiqah is to be slaughtered for seven, fourteen, or twenty-one days."
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ said, "For a baby boy, two sheep should be sacrificed, and for a baby girl, one sheep should be sacrificed." He also said, "And sacrifice two sheep for Al-Hasan and Al-Hussein on the seventh day, and order that any harm be removed from their heads." He also said, "Slaughter in the name of Allah, and say, 'In the name of Allah, and Allah is the greatest. O Allah, this is for You, and from You. This is the Aqeeqah of so-and-so.'" This is the wording of the hadith of Abdul-Majeed, and in the narration of Abu Qurra, it is reported that two sheep were sacrificed for Al-Hasan, and two sheep for Al-Hussein, and they were slaughtered on the seventh day, and he named them.
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ named al-Hasan on his seventh day and he mentioned that al-Hasan was born after al-Husain was born, and he remarked that the only difference between them was the pregnancy.
61.51 [Machine] What is mentioned in the act of giving silver by the weight of his hair and what the midwife is given
[Machine] Fatimah, the daughter of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , weighed the hair of Hasan, Husain, Zainab, and Um Kulthum. She then gave that weight in silver as charity. This narration is reported by Rabee'ah, from Muhammad bin Ali bin Husain, regarding Hasan and Husain (peace be upon them).
[Machine] Fatimah, the daughter of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, is reported to have sacrificed a sheep for Hassan and Hussein when she gave birth to them, then shaved their hair. She then donated (charitably) the equivalent weight of their hair in silver.
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) saying, "Adorn the hair of Al-Husain and give charity equivalent to its weight in silver, and give the midwife a gift of a piece of aqiq." This is mentioned in this narration, and Al-Humaidi narrated from Al-Husain ibn Zaid from Ja'far ibn Muhammad from his father that Ali ibn Abi Talib gave a gift to the midwife of aqiq. Hafs ibn Ghayath also narrated from Ja'far ibn Muhammad from his father from the Prophet ﷺ that he sent a message to send a gift to the midwife from it. Another narration from Muhammad ibn Ishaq from Abdullah ibn Abi Bakr from Muhammad ibn Ali ibn Hussein from Ali that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded Al-Hasan to sacrifice a sheep and said, "O Fatimah, shave his head and give charity equivalent to the weight of his hair in silver." We weighed it and its weight was a dirham and some dirhams. This is also mentioned in another disconnected narration, and it is said in his narration from Muhammad ibn Ali ibn Hussein from his father from his grandfather from Ali, and I do not know if it is preserved or not.
[Machine] "O Messenger of Allah, should I not sacrifice my son according to tradition?" He replied, "No, but rather shave his hair and give in charity an amount equivalent to its weight in gold to the needy or the poor." Ali said, "Shariq means the people of Sufah." So she did that. When she gave birth to Husayn, she did the same."
[Machine] That she (a woman) vows to offer a sacrifice of a great ram, so she came to the Prophet ﷺ and he said to her, "Do not offer any sacrifice, but shave his head and then give charity of its weight in silver for the sake of Allah or give it to a poor person." And she gave birth to Al-Hussein the following year. So Ibn Aqeel did the same thing which no one else did. And if this is authentic, it is as if he wanted to take on the responsibility of the 'Aqeeqah (sacrifice offered upon the birth of a child) for both of them himself, as we narrated it. So he commanded her to do something else, which is to give charity of the weight of their hair in silver, and success is from Allah.

Have you some dates? I said : Yes. I then gave him some dates which he put in his mouth, chewed them, opened his mouth and them in it. The baby began to lick them. The prophet (May peace be upon him) said: ANSAR’s favourite (fruit) is dates. And he gave him the name of ‘Abd al-Rahman. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 4951)

[Machine] A boy was born to me, so I brought him to the Prophet ﷺ and he named him Ibrahim and smeared his palate with a date.
61.55 [Machine] What is it preferable to be called?
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Indeed, the most beloved names to Allah are Abdullah and Abdur Rahman." This is a wording from the hadith of Abu Abdullah, and it is not found in the sayings of the others, which are called "Sabalan" or "At-Tareekh."
The Prophet ﷺ said: Call yourselves by the names of the Prophets. The names dearest to Allah are Abdullah and AbdurRahman, the truest are Harith and Hammam, and the worst are Harb and Murrah. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 4950)
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Indeed, you will be called by your names and the names of your fathers on the Day of Resurrection, so improve your names. This is a message from the son of Abu Zakariya who has not heard from Abu Darda."

[Machine] To name our horse four names: Afalah, Rabah, Yasar, and Nafi'a.
The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said "The dearest phrases to Allah are four: Subhan Allah (Hallowed be Allah), Al-Hamdulillah (Praise be to Allah), La ilaha illa-Allah (There is no deity but Allah), Allahu Akbar (Allah is Greater). There is no harm for you in which of them begin with (while remembering Allah). And do not give these names to your servants: Yasar and Rabah and Najih and Aflah. (Using translation from Muslim 2137a)
Messenger of Allah ﷺ decided to forbid (his followers) to name persons as Ya'la (Elevated), Baraka (Blessing), Aflah (Successful), Yasar and Nafi', but I saw that he kept silent after that and he did not say anything until Messenger of Allah ﷺ died. And he did not forbid (his followers to do this), then 'Umar decided to prohibit (people) from giving these names, but later on gave up the idea. (Using translation from Muslim 2138)
[Machine] The Prophet (PBUH) said, "The most honorable name to Allah on the Day of Resurrection is a man named Maliku al-Amalak." The wording of the hadith is narrated by Ahmad, and Abu Bakr ibn Abi Shaybah added in his narration, "There is no owner except Allah."

While Abu Usaid was sitting there, the Prophet ﷺ was busy with something in his hands so Abu Usaid told someone to take his son from the thigh of the Prophet ﷺ . When the Prophet ﷺ finished his job (with which he was busy), he said, "Where is the boy?" Abu Usaid replied, "We have sent him home." The Prophet ﷺ said, "What is his name?" Abu Usaid said, "(His name is) so-and-so. " The Prophet ﷺ said, "No, his name is Al-Mundhir." So he called him Al-Mundhir from that day. (Using translation from Bukhārī 6191)

[Machine] That Zainab's name was Barrah, but it was said that she praised herself, so the Messenger of Allah ﷺ named her Zainab, which is the word of the narration of Muhammad ibn Ja'far.
