61. Sacrificial Animals
Eat, make a provision, and keep it. (Using translation from Muslim 1972a)
[Machine] He heard Jabir ibn Abdullah say, "We used to not eat from the flesh of our bodies until the Messenger of Allah ﷺ permitted us, saying 'Eat and take provisions.' So we ate and took provisions. I said to 'Ata, Jabir said, 'Until we reached Madinah, he did not say anything.'"
[Machine] We used to supply ourselves with sacrificial meat during the time of the Prophet ﷺ to Madinah.
[Machine] Narrated Thawban, the freed slave of the Messenger of Allah, may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him, said: The Messenger of Allah, may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him, slaughtered his sacrificial animal and said, "O Thawban, prepare this sheep for us and make it presentable." I kept feeding from it until we reached Al-Madinah.
[Machine] On the authority of Thawban, the freed slave of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , that the Prophet ﷺ said to me: "Repair this meat," so I fixed it. He (Thawban) said: "He continued to eat from it until he reached Al-Madinah." Abu Mus'hir added, in his version of the hadith: "He said it during the Farewell Hajj."
[Machine] Narrated by the Prophet ﷺ , "I used to prohibit you from eating the meat of sacrificial animals (Adeha) after three days, but I only intended by that to make it easier for those who are well-off to offer it to those who are in need. So eat what appears good to you and save some for the future." (Narrated by Abu Al-Husayn ibn Bishran in Baghdad, Abu Al-Hasan Al-Masri informed us, Ibn Abi Maryam informed us, Al-Firayabi informed us, Sufyan informed us, from Alqamah ibn Marthad, from Sulaiman ibn Buraidah, from his father, from the Prophet ﷺ , with a similar narration)
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: I forbid you from three things, and I command you to do them. I forbid you from visiting graves, so visit them, for in visiting them there is a reminder. I forbid you from drinking in containers made of adham (a type of clay), so drink from every other vessel except that you do not drink intoxicants. I forbid you from eating the meat of sacrifices (animals slaughtered on the occasion of Eid) after three days, so eat it and benefit from it during your travels.
[Machine] He has allowed something to happen after you that contradicts what he forbade, which is eating the meat of sacrifices after three days.
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ prohibited us from eating the meat of our sacrificial animals for more than three days. I went on a journey and then returned to my family. They said, "He has given permission to the people after that." I did not believe them until I sent a message to my brother Qatadah ibn Nu'man, who was from Badr, asking him about it. He replied, "He has sent a message to me saying that if you have eaten your food, then you have truly believed. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ has given permission to the Muslims regarding that."
O people of Medina, do not eat the flesh of sacrificed animals beyond three days. Ibn al-Muthanni said: Three days. They (the Companions of the Holy Prophet) complained to the Messenger of Allah (may peace he upon him) that they had children and servants of theirs (to feed), whereupon he said: Eat, and feed others, and store, and make it a provision of food. (Using translation from Muslim 1973)
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said on the day of Eid al-Adha: "Whoever sacrifices among you, let him not partake of anything from his sacrifice until three days have passed." When the following year came, they said, "O Messenger of Allah, should we do the same this year as we did in the previous year?" He replied, "No, eat, feed others, and save some, as the previous year was a year of hardship or a word resembling it. I intended for you to distribute among the people."
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "We used to prohibit you from eating its meat for more than three days, so that it would be enough for you. Then Allah brought abundance, so eat, save, and do business. Behold, these days are days of eating, drinking, and remembering Allah. And when he said 'and do business,' he meant to maintain kinship by giving gifts, for charity sought for its reward, not for trade."
We used to salt some of the meat of sacrifice and present it to the Prophet ﷺ at Medina. Once he said, "Do not eat (of that meat) for more than three days." That was not a final order, but (that year) he wanted us to feed of it to others, Allah knows better. (Using translation from Bukhārī 5570)
Some people of desert came at the time of sacrifice in the time of Apostle of Allah ﷺ. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Store up for three days and give the rest as sadaqah (alms). After than the people said to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ: Messenger of Allah, the people used to benefit from their sacrifices, take and dissolve fat from them, and make water-bags (from their skins). The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: What is that ? or whatever he said: They said: Messenger of Allah ﷺ, you have prohibited to preserve the meat of sacrifice after three days. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: I prohibited you due to a body of people who came to you. Now eat, give it as sadaqah (alms), and store up. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 2812)
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade and Abu al-Hasan 'Ali ibn Muhammad al-Muqri reported that al-Hasan ibn Muhammad ibn Ishaq narrated to us, Yusuf ibn Ya'qub narrated to us, Muhammad ibn Kathir narrated to us, Sufyan narrated to us, 'Abd al-Rahman ibn 'Abis ibn Rabiah narrated from his father 'Abis ibn Rabiah that he said, "It was said to 'Aishah, 'Did the Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbid the eating of sacrificial meat after three days?' She said, 'He only forbade it once in a year when the people were hungry from it and he intended to feed the rich and poor. We used to keep the humps for fifteen days and then eat it.' I then asked, 'Why did you do that?' She laughed and said, 'The household of Muhammad ﷺ did not get full with the bread made of barley continuously for three days until he met Allah ﷻ.'
