61. Sacrificial Animals
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ was asked, "What should be done with sacrificial animals?" He pointed with his hand and said, "Four things." Al-Bara'ah used to point with his hand and say, "My hand is shorter than the hand of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. The clear calf with its rib, the clear camel with its hump, the clear sick one with its sickness, and the thin one that cannot be fattened." Abu Nasr 'Umar ibn 'Abd al-'Aziz reported to us that 'Ali ibn al-Fadl ibn Muhammad ibn 'Aqil al-Khuza'i reported to us that Abu Shu'ayb al-Harani informed us that 'Ali ibn al-Madini said: 'Ubayd ibn Fiyruz is from the people of Egypt, and we have not heard 'Amr ibn al-Harith mention him. So we looked and it was true that 'Amr ibn al-Harith had not heard him. Abu Nasr reported to us that 'Ali (ibn al-Fadl) reported to us that Abu Shu'ayb reported to us that 'Ali said: Ru'uh ibn 'Ubadah informed us that Usamah ibn Zaid narrated to him from 'Amr ibn al-Harith, from Yazid ibn Abi Habib, from 'Ubayd ibn Fiyruz. 'Ali then said: So we looked and found that Yazid ibn Abi Habib had not heard him from 'Ubayd ibn Fiyruz. 'Abd al-A'la reported to us from Muhammad ibn Ishaq that he narrated to them from Yazid ibn Abi Habib, from Sulaiman ibn 'Abd al-Rahman, from 'Ubayd ibn Fiyruz. 'Ali then said: So the hadith revolves around the hadith of Shu'bah.
[Machine] I asked Al-Bara' ibn 'Azib about what the Messenger of Allah ﷺ disliked or forbade in regards to sacrificial animals. He said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ performed the sacrifice in this manner, and he gestured with his hand indicating that his shortest finger was shorter than his other fingers. He said: There are four types of animals that are not sufficient unless their faults are clearly visible: the blind animal with a clearly visible blindness, the sick animal with a clearly visible sickness, the limping animal with a clearly visible limp, and the emaciated animal that cannot be improved. I said: I dislike having a deficiency in the incisor or in the ear. He said: So, whatever fault you dislike, leave it, and do not forbid it for anyone else. 19098 Abu Nasr ibn Qatadah informed us that 'Ali ibn Al-Fadl Al-Khuzai informed us that Abu Shu'aib informed us that 'Ali ibn Al-Madinay informed us that Yahya ibn Sa'id informed us that Shu'bah narrated to me that Sulaiman ibn 'Abd Al-Rahman informed me about 'Ubaid ibn Fayruz, and he mentioned the Hadith in this manner, and he did not mention hearing it from 'Ubaid ibn Fayruz. 'Ali then said: Then we looked, and it turned out that Sulaiman ibn 'Abd Al-Rahman did not hear it from 'Ubaid ibn Fayruz.
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ spoke to me about the four things that are disliked: a woman who reveals her private parts, a woman who reveals her illness, a woman with a crooked rib, and a woman who never becomes clean (from menstruation). Ali replied, "This is the narration of Layth." And Uthman said, "I asked Layth bin Sa'd, 'O Abu Al-Harith, does Shu'bah narrate this hadith from Sulaiman bin Abdul Rahman, who heard it from Ubaid bin Firoz?' He replied, 'No, Sulaiman narrated to us from Al-Qasim, the freed slave of Khalid, who narrated from Ubaid bin Firoz.' Uthman bin Umar added, 'I met Shu'bah and said to him, 'Layth narrated to us this hadith from Sulaiman bin Abdul Rahman, who heard it from Al-Qasim, who heard it from Ubaid bin Firoz.' And Shu'bah mentioned the person who had a similar defect as the woman who never becomes clean, he said, 'This is how I memorized it, just as you narrated it.'"
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was asked: "What should be avoided when sacrificing?" He pointed with his hand and said: "There are four." He then said, "My hand is shorter than the hand of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ . The first is a blind animal whose blindness is clearly apparent, the second is a sick animal whose sickness is clearly apparent, the third is an emaciated animal which is clearly weak, and the fourth is one whose horn, ear, or teeth has been broken. I then said to Al-Bara': 'I dislike (these defects) in horn, ear and tooth.' He replied: 'Dislike for yourself whatever you wish, and do not impose it on anyone else.'"
I came to Utbah ibn AbdusSulami and said: AbulWalid, I went out seeking sacrificial animals. I did not find anything which attracted me except an animal whose teeth have fallen. So I abominated it. What do you say (about it)? He said: Why did you not bring it to me? He said: Glory be to Allah: Is if lawful for you and not lawful for me? He said: Yes, you doubt and I do not doubt. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ has forbidden an animal whose ear has been uprooted so much so that its hole appears (outwardly), and an animal whose horn has broken from the root, and an animal which has totally lost the sight of its eye, and an animal which is so thin and weak that it cannot go with the herd, and an animal with a broken leg. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 2803)
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ ordered us to trim the eyebrows and ear hair, and not to shave the mustache or cut the hair on the temples. The "muqabilah" refers to cutting the edge of the ear, and "mudabarah" refers to cutting the side of the ear. "Shurqaa" refers to an ear that is split, and "kharqaa" refers to an ear that is pierced with a hole. Abu Nasr 'Umar bin Abd al-'Aziz bin 'Umar bin Qatadah informed us, who was informed by Abu al-Hasan Muhammad bin al-Hasan bin Ahmad bin Isma'il al-Surraj, who narrated from Abu Shu'aib al-Harrani, who was informed by Ahmed bin Abd al-Malik bin Waqid al-Harrani, who was informed by Zuheir, who was informed by Abu Ishaq, who said that he was a truthful man and mentioned it in a similar way. He also mentioned that we should not shave the pubic hair. Zuheir asked Abu Ishaq and mentioned "Adbaa" (hair in the armpits). He asked, "What is muqabilah?" Abu Ishaq replied, "Cutting the edge of the ear." He asked, "What is mudabarah?" He replied, "Cutting the back of the ear." He asked, "What is shurqaa?" He replied, "Splitting the ear." He asked, "What is kharqaa?" He replied, "Piercing a hole in the ear."
[Machine] Ali heard the Prophet ﷺ saying that he forbade sacrificing parts of the ear and horn. Qatadah said, "I asked Sa'id ibn al-Musayyib about the 'adhab (part of an animal's ear and horn) and he said, 'Half is enough, and anything beyond that is excess.'"
[Machine] The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ prohibited piercing the earlobe and the horn, as was mentioned in these two narrations. The first narration is more accurate, while the second narration is weaker. It has been reported from Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that he disagreed with this prohibition regarding the horn.
[Machine] The evidence was that we were with Ali, and a man came to him and said, "Is it the cow?" He said, "Yes, it is seven." He said, "Is it the horn?" He said, "It does not harm you." He said, "Is it the lameness?" He said, "When you reach the place of ritual sacrifice, the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , ordered us to hasten the eye and the ear."
[Machine] "If you reach the sacred place, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ordered us to hasten the eye and the ear, indicating that the intended meaning of the first, if purification is correct in the century. Al-Shafi'i (may Allah have mercy on him) said there is no deficiency in the Qur'an, meaning there is no deficiency or loss in its flesh."
