61. Sacrificial Animals
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was asked about the lizard, and he said, "I do not eat it nor do I forbid it."
[Machine] Narrated by Ibn Umar, I sat close to him for about two years and I never heard him narrating a Hadith from the Prophet except that one day, some companions of the Messenger of Allah were eating a lizard when a woman from the Prophet's wives called them out, saying that it was a lizard. The people stopped eating it, then the Messenger of Allah said, "Eat, for it is not forbidden nor is there any harm in it. However, it is not a food that my people are used to." Another narration of Abu Zakaria states, "nor is there any harm in it."
[Machine] Bin al-Walid narrated that they both entered the house of Maymuna with the Prophet Muhammad. A roasted lizard was brought, and the Messenger of Allah inclined towards it with his hand. Some of the women in the house of Maymuna said, "Inform the Messenger of Allah about what he wants to eat." They said, "It is a lizard, O Messenger of Allah." So, the Messenger of Allah raised his hand, and I said, "Is it haram?" He said, "No, but it was not found in my people's land, so I find it repulsive." Khalid said, "So I repeated it and ate it, and the Messenger of Allah observed."
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to the house of Maymuna, and Khalid ibn Al-Walid had with him a piece of roasted meat. Maymuna said, "Inform the Messenger of Allah ﷺ what this is." When he was informed, he left it and Khalid said, "Oh Messenger of Allah, is it forbidden?" He said, "No, but I am abstaining from it." Then Khalid began to chew on the bones.
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , said, "I do not eat it, nor do I forbid it, nor do I command it, nor do I prohibit it." Ibn Abbas said, "What you are saying is bad. The Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , was never sent except as a legalizer and a prohibition legislator." The meat of a monitor lizard was brought close to the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , and he stretched out his hand to eat it. Maymunah said, "O Messenger of Allah, this is the meat of a monitor lizard." So he withdrew his hand and said, "I have never eaten it before, so do not eat it." Fadl ibn Abbas, Khalid ibn Walid, and a woman who was with them ate it. Maymunah said, "I do not eat from a food that the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , did not eat."
Ibn ʿAbbas said: Um Hufaid, Ibn ʿAbbas's aunt sent some dried yogurt (butter free), ghee (butter) and a mastigar to the Prophet ﷺ as a gift. The Prophet ﷺ ate the dried yogurt and butter but left the mastigar because he disliked it. Ibn ʿAbbas said, "The mastigar was eaten at the table of Messenger of Allah ﷺ and if it had been illegal to eat, it could not have been eaten at the table of Messenger of Allah ﷺ." (Using translation from Bukhārī 2575)
[Machine] That the Prophet ﷺ was brought a plate with mist on it, so he said, "Eat, for I am fasting."
[Machine] I heard Jabir bin Abdullah say, "The Prophet ﷺ was brought a lizard, but he refused to eat it. He said, 'I do not know, maybe it is from the early generations who were transformed.'"
(Most likely referring to the belief that some animals were transformed and became impure as a result of certain actions of the early generations.)
[Machine] And Umar ibn Al-Khattab said: "Verily, the Prophet ﷺ did not forbid it, as Allah Almighty can benefit with it more than one person. Indeed, it is the food of the general public, even if I were to taste it."
[Machine] A man came to the Prophet ﷺ and said, "We are in a land that is infertile, so what would you command us?" The Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied, "I have been informed that a nation from the Children of Israel was transformed into animals, but I do not know which animals they were. Therefore, I cannot command or prohibit anything regarding it."
[Machine] And Abu Abdullah Al-Hafiz informed us that Abu Abdullah Ash-Shaybani narrated to me that my father informed me that Muhammad ibn Al-Muthanna informed us that Ibn Abi Adi narrated from Dawud from Abu Nadrah from Abu Sa'id in the meaning of this hadith. Abu Sa'id said, "When Omar ibn Al-Khattab was alive, he said, 'Indeed, Allah benefits with him more than one person. And indeed, it is the general sustenance of this community. If I had it, I would distribute it. Indeed, the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , healed him.'"
[Machine] "An Arab man asked the Prophet ﷺ saying, 'O Messenger of Allah, I am in a valley with scattered vegetation, and it is the only source of food for my family.' The Prophet remained silent about it. We said to him, 'Ask him again.' So the man asked again, and the Prophet remained silent. We said to him, 'Ask him again.' So the man asked for the third time, and the Prophet said, 'O Arab man, Allah became angry with two tribes from the children of Israel, so He transformed them into animal forms that roam the earth. I do not know, it may be that some of that land is from them. I am neither forbidding you from it nor commanding you to eat it.'
[Machine] We were on a journey when we were struck by hunger, so we stopped at a foggy place. While the pots were boiling, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Indeed, there was a nation from the Children of Israel who were turned into animals, and I am afraid that this may be them." So we tipped over the pots.
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ was brought a lizard, and he said, "A nation from those who were transformed." Allah knows best. In another narration by Ubaidullah, the Prophet ﷺ was brought a lizard and he said, "Indeed, a nation was transformed." Allah knows best. This is what Al-Hakam narrated from Husayn from Zaid Ibn Wahb from Thabit Ibn Wadi'ah, and it is also said that it was Thabit Ibn Yazid Al-Ansari, and his father was Yazid and his mother was Wadi'ah. This hadith is in the context of the narrations of those who came before him, and there is no prohibition in it. Allah knows best. Al-Bukhari said, "The hadith of Thabit Ibn Wadi'ah is the most authentic." And in the same hadith, there is a discrepancy.
[Machine] A shoulder was presented to the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , but he did not eat it. So I said, "O Messenger of Allah, don't you feed the poor?" He said, "Do not feed them from what you do not eat." Hamad ibn Abi Sulayman narrated this hadith separately and it was said that he heard it from Ibrahim, who heard it from Aisha, who transmitted it.
[Machine] A gazelle was gifted to us, so I presented it to the Prophet ﷺ , but he did not eat from it. So I said, "O Messenger of Allah, why don't you give it to the needy?" He replied, "We do not feed them from what we do not eat, and it is established from his practice to abstain from eating certain things. Then it is known that it is recommended not to feed the poor from what we do not eat. And Allah knows best, and success is through Allah."
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ forbade eating lizards, and this is a unique view held by Isma'il ibn 'Ayyash, and it is not a valid evidence. And what has been mentioned about it being permissible is not more authentic than this, and Allah knows best.
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ said, "I wish we had a white bread made from barley, attached with ghee and yogurt." Then a man from the people took it and brought it to him and asked him what this was for. He said, "It was in a hole of a lizard." So he told him to lift it up.
[Machine] Did not the Messenger of Allah ﷺ hate it? He said, "Does not a person hate something that is not sinful?" Abdullah (bin Mas'ud) said, "Indeed, permissible things become forbidden just like forbidden things become permissible."
