61. Sacrificial Animals
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ addressed us on the Day of Sacrifice saying, "Indeed, the first thing we will start with on this day is to pray, then we will return and sacrifice. Whoever does that has followed our tradition. And whoever slaughters before praying, then it is only meat that he has hurried for his family, it is not part of the rituals." Then my maternal uncle, Abu Burdah bin Niyyar, stood up and said, "O Messenger of Allah, I slaughtered before praying and I have a better part than a mature sheep." He said, "Place it in its place, or he said, slaughter it and it will not suffice or replace anyone after you." And Ali narrated to us that Ahmad informed them, Abu Muslim narrated to us, Hajjaj bin Minhal narrated to us, Shu'bah mentioned it in his chain of narration as well and he said, "Place it in its place and it will not suffice or replace anyone after you."
One day Messenger of Allah ﷺ offered the ʿId prayer and said, "Whoever offers our prayer and faces our Qibla should not slaughter the sacrifice till he finishes the ʿId prayer." Abu Burda bin Niyar got up and said, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! I have already done it. The Prophet ﷺ said, "That is something you have done before its due time." Abu Burda said, "I have a Jadha'a which is better than two old sheep; shall I slaughter it?" The Prophet ﷺ said, "Yes, but it will not be sufficient for anyone after you." (Using translation from Bukhārī 5563)
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ delivered a sermon to us on the day of sacrifice after the prayer. He said: If anyone prays like our prayer, and sacrifices like our sacrifice, his sacrifice is all right. If anyone sacrifices before the prayer (for 'Id), that is goat meant for flesh. Abu Burdah b. Niyar stood up and said: Messenger of Allah, I swear by Allah, I sacrificed before I went for prayer. I thought it was the day of eating and drinking; so I made haste, and ate myself, and supplied flesh to my family and neighbors. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: That is a goat meant for eating flesh. He said: I have a kid (of less than a year) which is better than two goats meant for flesh. Will it be valid from me ? He said: Yes, but it will not be valid for anyone after you. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 2800)
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "No one should slaughter before they pray." My uncle came to him and said, "O Messenger of Allah, today there is plenty of meat and I have slaughtered my sheep so that my family and neighbors can eat. I also have a neck of milk which is better than a sheep for meat. Should I slaughter it?" He said, "Yes, and you will not lose the reward of your sheep."
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ said, "Whoever sacrifices before the prayer, then he has only slaughtered for himself. And whoever sacrifices after the prayer, then his sacrifice is complete and he has followed the tradition of the Muslims." Abu Abdullah al-Hafiz informed us, Abu Abdullah Muhammad ibn Ya'qub narrated to me, who narrated from Muhammad ibn Abdus-Salam, who narrated from Yahya ibn Yahya, who narrated from Khalid ibn Abdullah, from Mutarraf, who mentioned it.
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ exchanged it, so he said, "O Messenger of Allah, I only have a trunk that is better than an old one." He said, "Put it in its place, and it will not repay or benefit anyone after you."
[Machine] That the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , prayed and then gave a sermon. He commanded whoever had slaughtered before the prayer to repeat the slaughter. So, a man from the Ansar stood up and said, "My neighbors are in need, or he said, they are special to me, and I slaughtered before the prayer, and I have some necks of sheep that are dearer to me than the thigh meat." He gave him the permission. If it was permission for him, then it was so. Otherwise, I have no knowledge of it. Then he turned towards two salty rams, meaning he slaughtered them, and the people dispersed to their spoils, so they became distraught.
[Machine] I heard Jundub ibn Sufyan say, "I witnessed the Eid al-Adha (sacrifice) with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and then a man stood up and said, 'Indeed, some people have slaughtered before the prayer.' So, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Whoever slaughtered before the prayer, let him make it as a charity, and whoever did not, let him slaughter in the name of Allah.' This is the wording of the hadith of Ibn Al-A'raabi and in the narration of As-Saffar. He learned that some people had already slaughtered and he said, 'Let him make up for his sacrifice.' And whoever didn't, let him slaughter in the name of Allah."
[Machine] Abdullah bin Busr, the companion of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , went out with the people on the day of Eid al-Fitr or Eid al-Adha and he disapproved of the delay of the Imam. He said, "We had finished our preparations during this hour, which is the time for praising Allah. It has been narrated from Al-Hasan al-Basri that the Prophet ﷺ used to go out for Eid al-Adha and Eid al-Fitr when the sun rose a little. The Prophet ﷺ used to pray the Eid prayer in the early time. Whoever slaughtered before the Prophet's prayer and ate and fed his family and neighbors as we have been narrated in the hadith of Abu Burdah bin Niyar, his slaughter was considered invalid before its proper time, and that is not permissible. Therefore, he was commanded to repeat it. Whoever sacrifices at the proper time when the prayer is due and finishes the prayer and the sermon of the Prophet ﷺ , his sacrifice is valid, if Allah wills."
