61. Sacrificial Animals (2/14)
[Machine] In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
Allah, may He be praised, said: "So pray to your Lord and sacrifice." [Surah Al-Kawthar, verse 2].
The Prophet ﷺ said, "The first thing that we should do on this day of ours is to pray and then return to slaughter the sacrifice. So anyone who does so, he acted according to our Sunna (tradition), and whoever slaughtered the sacrifice before the prayer, it was just meat which he presented to his family and would not be considered as Nusuk." A person from the Ansar named Abu Burda bin Niyyar said, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! I slaughtered the Nusuk (before the prayer) but I have a young shegoat which is better than an older sheep." The Prophet ﷺ I said, "Sacrifice it in lieu of the first, but it will be not sufficient (as a sacrifice) for anybody else after you." (Using translation from Bukhārī 965)
[Machine] "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'This is a sheep of meat.' He then said, 'O Messenger of Allah, I have a portion of goat meat.' He replied, 'Sacrifice it and it won't be suitable for anyone else.'"
[Machine] He said, "O Messenger of Allah, I have a castrated male goat, should I slaughter it?" He replied, "Slaughter it and it is not permissible for anyone other than you."
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ distributed sacrificial animals among his companions, and a stump was left for Uqbah. So I said, "O Messenger of Allah, a stump has been left for me." He said, "Sacrifice it, for it is the wording of a Makkian hadith."
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ gave me some sheep that he distributed as sacrifices among his companions. There remained a female camel, so I mentioned it to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , and he said, "Sacrifice it yourself."
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah gave me some sheep and I distributed them as sacrifices among my companions. Only a female camel called "Atud" remained. He said to me, "Sacrifice it yourself and do not permit anyone else to sacrifice it after you. This additional rule, if preserved, will be a permission for him (i.e., the companion) as it was a permission for Abu Burdah ibn Niyyar."
[Machine] The messenger of Allah ﷺ distributed sheep to his companions, and he gave me a young goat. He said, "Sacrifice it." I said, "Can I sacrifice it? It is a young goat." He said, "Yes, sacrifice it." So, I sacrificed it, according to the narration of Al-Wahbi, but it is not mentioned in the narration of Abu Dawood whether it was a goat or not.
“It is permissible to offer a Jadha’a* among sheep as a sacrifice.” (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 3139)
[Machine] "We sacrificed with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ a part of a sheep's trunk. It was narrated by Waki' and Ibn Wahb from Usamah bin Zaid Al-Laythi, who narrated from Mu'adh bin Abdullah bin Khubayb Al-Juhani. He said, 'I asked Sa'id bin Al-Musayyib about the trunk of the sheep, and he said, 'Sacrifice it.''
[Machine] We were on a raid and Mujaashi'u ibn Mas'ood, a companion of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , was with us or against us. The sheep were lost, so he said, "I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying, 'The branch will repay from what the second branch repays.'"
[Machine] He was one of the companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ that they were with Mujashi' al-Sulami. The sacrifices were over, and a man from the companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood up and said, "I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, 'The jadha' (cut-off part of the tail) of the sheep should be cut, as the thyniyah (cut-off part of the ear) is cut.' I see that Sufyan doubts about this narration regarding goats."
[Machine] I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying, "The shank of the lamb is as sufficient as its thigh."
On the authority of his father: We were with a man from the Companions of the Prophet ﷺ called Mujashi' who belonged to Banu Sulaim. There was a scarcity if goats (in those days). He commanded a man to announce (among the people); so he announced that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to say: A lamb may be given as full payent for that for which has full-grown animal is payment. Abu Dawud said: His name is Mujashi' b. Mas'ud. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 2799)
[Machine] From a companion of the Prophet, ﷺ , from Juheina or Muzaina, that they were with the Prophet, ﷺ , one or two days before Eid al-Adha, and they used to give the sheep as thanniyah (a specific type of charity). So the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , said, "The jadha'ah (a different type of charity) rewards as the thanniyah rewards from it."
[Machine] About Umm Bilal, a woman who converted to Islam, her father was with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on the Day of Hudaybiyah. She said, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Sacrifice the trunk of the sheep, as it is permissible."
[Machine] "The Prophet ﷺ said that it is permissible to offer a young sheep as a sacrifice. Abu Bakr ibn al-Harith informed us, who was informed by Abu Muhammad ibn Hayyan, who narrated from Ubaidullah ibn Muhammad ibn Sawwad, who narrated from Ibrahim ibn al-Mundhir al-Hizami, who narrated from Abu Damrah, and he mentioned it."
[Machine] I brought two young sheep to the city, but they ran away from me. I met Abu Huraira and informed him about what happened. He said, "I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying, 'The best or most excellent form of sacrifice is a young sheep.'" He also said that people were in a rush to obtain them. I learned from Abu 'Isa Al-Tirmidhi that he said, "Al-Bukhari said..."
[Machine] Jibril, ﷺ , came to the Prophet ﷺ on the day of Eid al-Adha and asked, "How do you see our sacrifices?" The Prophet replied, "The people of the heavens take delight in it." Jibril then informed him, "O Muhammad, know that the sacrifice of a young sheep is better than the sacrifice of a camel or a cow. If Allah had known of a better sacrifice, He would have commanded Ibrahim, ﷺ , to offer it. Abu Ja'far al-Sammani also narrated a similar hadith from Ishaq, in which he added that the sacrifice of a young sheep is better than the sacrifice of a goat, and Ishaq mentioned this in his narration even though it has a weak chain of narration."
[Machine] Some of the wives of the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , used to say, "I prefer to sacrifice a leg of sheep rather than sacrificing a mature goat." This was narrated by Muhammad ibn Ishaq ibn Yasar from Yazid ibn Abdullah ibn Qusayt from Ibn Musayyib from Umm Salamah, the wife of the Prophet, ﷺ .
[Machine] The jurist Abu Al-Fath informed us that Abd al-Rahman al-Shurayhi informed Abu al-Qasim al-Baghawi, who narrated from Abdul A'la ibn Hammad, who narrated from Hammad ibn Salama, who narrated from Qatadah, who narrated from Mutarraf, who narrated from Imran ibn Husayn, who said, "If a thousand camels were to come to us, I would not sacrifice except with a leg from a sheep."
[Machine] A pair of mature, salted rams was presented as a gift to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , and he sacrificed them.
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ used to sacrifice in Madinah sometimes with a cow, and with a sheep if he did not find a cow.
[Machine] 'Aasim An-Nabil narrated from Sufyan, from Ibn Abi Layla, from Al-Hakam, from Miqsam, from Ibn Abbas, that the Prophet ﷺ was given one hundred camels, among which was a silver nose ring for Abu Jahl ibn Hisham. This was stated in the later part of the book of Hajj, and if it is proven that it is permissible to give male animals as gifts or sacrifices, then Allah knows best.'
61.5 [Machine] What is mentioned regarding the best sacrifices? Imam Shafi'i said: "If the sacrifice is only blood used to draw closer to Allah, then the best blood is the most beloved to me." Some interpreters claimed that Allah's saying: "That (is so). And whoever honors the symbols of Allah - indeed, it is from the piety of hearts." (Quran 22:32), refers to seeking the best sacrificial animals and approving of them. Imam Shafi'i said: The Prophet ﷺ was asked, "Which slaves are the best?" He replied, "Those that are the most expensive and precious to their owners.
I asked the Prophet, "What is the best deed?" He replied, "To believe in Allah and to fight for His Cause." I then asked, "What is the best kind of manumission (of slaves)?" He replied, "The manumission of the most expensive slave and the most beloved by his master." I said, "If I cannot afford to do that?" He said, "Help the weak or do good for a person who cannot work for himself." I said, "If I cannot do that?" He said, "Refrain from harming others for this will be regarded as a charitable deed for your own good." (Using translation from Bukhārī 2518)
[Machine] I was one of seven with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he mentioned the topic of sacrifices. Then the Prophet ﷺ said, "Verily, the most beloved of sacrifices to Allah are the largest and fattest ones."
[Machine] "And honor and power are in accordance with capability, so what is great is the best."
61.6 [Machine] What is preferred to be sacrificed from sheep?
[Machine] Narrated Aisha, the wife of the Prophet ﷺ , that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ordered for a ewe lamb, which was black with white spots on its feet and face, to be brought. He commanded for it to be used for breeding, to be observed in black wool, and to be sacrificed for its meat. This hadith is mentioned.
[Machine] That the Messenger of Allah ﷺ went back to two tied and salted rams and he slaughtered them with his own hands.
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sacrificed a white ram with black markings. It ate, drank, looked, walked, and laid down in blackness. This is the narration of Al-Fadl.
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ slaughtered two salted rams with curved horns on the day of sacrifice.
It was narrated from ‘Aishah and Abu Hurairah that when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ wanted to offer a sacrifice, he brought two large, fat, horned, black-and-white, castrated rams. He slaughtered one on behalf of his nation, for whoever testified to Allah with monotheism and that he had conveyed (the Message), and he slaughtered the other on behalf of Muhammad and the family of Muhammad ﷺ. (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 3122)
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "The best sacrifice is the horned sheep." And it was narrated from Ubada bin Nusayy from his father from Ubada bin As-Samit that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "The best sacrifice is the horned sheep, and the best shroud is the garment." And it has been mentioned in the book of funerals.

Al-Thawri narrated it from Tawbah al-Anbari from Salma, which means the son of 'Attab, who said: I heard Abu Huraira saying: The blood of a white person is more beloved to me than the blood of two black people. Al-Bukhari said: Some of them raise it, but it is not authentic."

[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ was asked, "What should be done with sacrificial animals?" He pointed with his hand and said, "Four things." Al-Bara'ah used to point with his hand and say, "My hand is shorter than the hand of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. The clear calf with its rib, the clear camel with its hump, the clear sick one with its sickness, and the thin one that cannot be fattened." Abu Nasr 'Umar ibn 'Abd al-'Aziz reported to us that 'Ali ibn al-Fadl ibn Muhammad ibn 'Aqil al-Khuza'i reported to us that Abu Shu'ayb al-Harani informed us that 'Ali ibn al-Madini said: 'Ubayd ibn Fiyruz is from the people of Egypt, and we have not heard 'Amr ibn al-Harith mention him. So we looked and it was true that 'Amr ibn al-Harith had not heard him. Abu Nasr reported to us that 'Ali (ibn al-Fadl) reported to us that Abu Shu'ayb reported to us that 'Ali said: Ru'uh ibn 'Ubadah informed us that Usamah ibn Zaid narrated to him from 'Amr ibn al-Harith, from Yazid ibn Abi Habib, from 'Ubayd ibn Fiyruz. 'Ali then said: So we looked and found that Yazid ibn Abi Habib had not heard him from 'Ubayd ibn Fiyruz. 'Abd al-A'la reported to us from Muhammad ibn Ishaq that he narrated to them from Yazid ibn Abi Habib, from Sulaiman ibn 'Abd al-Rahman, from 'Ubayd ibn Fiyruz. 'Ali then said: So the hadith revolves around the hadith of Shu'bah.

[Machine] I asked Al-Bara' ibn 'Azib about what the Messenger of Allah ﷺ disliked or forbade in regards to sacrificial animals. He said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ performed the sacrifice in this manner, and he gestured with his hand indicating that his shortest finger was shorter than his other fingers. He said: There are four types of animals that are not sufficient unless their faults are clearly visible: the blind animal with a clearly visible blindness, the sick animal with a clearly visible sickness, the limping animal with a clearly visible limp, and the emaciated animal that cannot be improved. I said: I dislike having a deficiency in the incisor or in the ear. He said: So, whatever fault you dislike, leave it, and do not forbid it for anyone else. 19098 Abu Nasr ibn Qatadah informed us that 'Ali ibn Al-Fadl Al-Khuzai informed us that Abu Shu'aib informed us that 'Ali ibn Al-Madinay informed us that Yahya ibn Sa'id informed us that Shu'bah narrated to me that Sulaiman ibn 'Abd Al-Rahman informed me about 'Ubaid ibn Fayruz, and he mentioned the Hadith in this manner, and he did not mention hearing it from 'Ubaid ibn Fayruz. 'Ali then said: Then we looked, and it turned out that Sulaiman ibn 'Abd Al-Rahman did not hear it from 'Ubaid ibn Fayruz.

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ spoke to me about the four things that are disliked: a woman who reveals her private parts, a woman who reveals her illness, a woman with a crooked rib, and a woman who never becomes clean (from menstruation). Ali replied, "This is the narration of Layth." And Uthman said, "I asked Layth bin Sa'd, 'O Abu Al-Harith, does Shu'bah narrate this hadith from Sulaiman bin Abdul Rahman, who heard it from Ubaid bin Firoz?' He replied, 'No, Sulaiman narrated to us from Al-Qasim, the freed slave of Khalid, who narrated from Ubaid bin Firoz.' Uthman bin Umar added, 'I met Shu'bah and said to him, 'Layth narrated to us this hadith from Sulaiman bin Abdul Rahman, who heard it from Al-Qasim, who heard it from Ubaid bin Firoz.' And Shu'bah mentioned the person who had a similar defect as the woman who never becomes clean, he said, 'This is how I memorized it, just as you narrated it.'"

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was asked: "What should be avoided when sacrificing?" He pointed with his hand and said: "There are four." He then said, "My hand is shorter than the hand of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ . The first is a blind animal whose blindness is clearly apparent, the second is a sick animal whose sickness is clearly apparent, the third is an emaciated animal which is clearly weak, and the fourth is one whose horn, ear, or teeth has been broken. I then said to Al-Bara': 'I dislike (these defects) in horn, ear and tooth.' He replied: 'Dislike for yourself whatever you wish, and do not impose it on anyone else.'"

I came to Utbah ibn AbdusSulami and said: AbulWalid, I went out seeking sacrificial animals. I did not find anything which attracted me except an animal whose teeth have fallen. So I abominated it. What do you say (about it)? He said: Why did you not bring it to me? He said: Glory be to Allah: Is if lawful for you and not lawful for me? He said: Yes, you doubt and I do not doubt. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ has forbidden an animal whose ear has been uprooted so much so that its hole appears (outwardly), and an animal whose horn has broken from the root, and an animal which has totally lost the sight of its eye, and an animal which is so thin and weak that it cannot go with the herd, and an animal with a broken leg. [Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ ordered us to trim the eyebrows and ear hair, and not to shave the mustache or cut the hair on the temples. The "muqabilah" refers to cutting the edge of the ear, and "mudabarah" refers to cutting the side of the ear. "Shurqaa" refers to an ear that is split, and "kharqaa" refers to an ear that is pierced with a hole. Abu Nasr 'Umar bin Abd al-'Aziz bin 'Umar bin Qatadah informed us, who was informed by Abu al-Hasan Muhammad bin al-Hasan bin Ahmad bin Isma'il al-Surraj, who narrated from Abu Shu'aib al-Harrani, who was informed by Ahmed bin Abd al-Malik bin Waqid al-Harrani, who was informed by Zuheir, who was informed by Abu Ishaq, who said that he was a truthful man and mentioned it in a similar way. He also mentioned that we should not shave the pubic hair. Zuheir asked Abu Ishaq and mentioned "Adbaa" (hair in the armpits). He asked, "What is muqabilah?" Abu Ishaq replied, "Cutting the edge of the ear." He asked, "What is mudabarah?" He replied, "Cutting the back of the ear." He asked, "What is shurqaa?" He replied, "Splitting the ear." He asked, "What is kharqaa?" He replied, "Piercing a hole in the ear."

[Machine] Ali heard the Prophet ﷺ saying that he forbade sacrificing parts of the ear and horn. Qatadah said, "I asked Sa'id ibn al-Musayyib about the 'adhab (part of an animal's ear and horn) and he said, 'Half is enough, and anything beyond that is excess.'"

[Machine] The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ prohibited piercing the earlobe and the horn, as was mentioned in these two narrations. The first narration is more accurate, while the second narration is weaker. It has been reported from Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that he disagreed with this prohibition regarding the horn.
[Machine] The evidence was that we were with Ali, and a man came to him and said, "Is it the cow?" He said, "Yes, it is seven." He said, "Is it the horn?" He said, "It does not harm you." He said, "Is it the lameness?" He said, "When you reach the place of ritual sacrifice, the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , ordered us to hasten the eye and the ear."

61.9 [Machine] Time of Sacrifice
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ addressed us on the Day of Sacrifice saying, "Indeed, the first thing we will start with on this day is to pray, then we will return and sacrifice. Whoever does that has followed our tradition. And whoever slaughters before praying, then it is only meat that he has hurried for his family, it is not part of the rituals." Then my maternal uncle, Abu Burdah bin Niyyar, stood up and said, "O Messenger of Allah, I slaughtered before praying and I have a better part than a mature sheep." He said, "Place it in its place, or he said, slaughter it and it will not suffice or replace anyone after you." And Ali narrated to us that Ahmad informed them, Abu Muslim narrated to us, Hajjaj bin Minhal narrated to us, Shu'bah mentioned it in his chain of narration as well and he said, "Place it in its place and it will not suffice or replace anyone after you."
One day Messenger of Allah ﷺ offered the ʿId prayer and said, "Whoever offers our prayer and faces our Qibla should not slaughter the sacrifice till he finishes the ʿId prayer." Abu Burda bin Niyar got up and said, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! I have already done it. The Prophet ﷺ said, "That is something you have done before its due time." Abu Burda said, "I have a Jadha'a which is better than two old sheep; shall I slaughter it?" The Prophet ﷺ said, "Yes, but it will not be sufficient for anyone after you."
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ delivered a sermon to us on the day of sacrifice after the prayer. He said: If anyone prays like our prayer, and sacrifices like our sacrifice, his sacrifice is all right. If anyone sacrifices before the prayer (for 'Id), that is goat meant for flesh. Abu Burdah b. Niyar stood up and said: Messenger of Allah, I swear by Allah, I sacrificed before I went for prayer. I thought it was the day of eating and drinking; so I made haste, and ate myself, and supplied flesh to my family and neighbors. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: That is a goat meant for eating flesh. He said: I have a kid (of less than a year) which is better than two goats meant for flesh. Will it be valid from me ? He said: Yes, but it will not be valid for anyone after you.
