54. Tafsīr (Exegesis) (13/15)
When this verse was revealed:" When believing women came to thee giving thee a pledge that they will not associate aught with Allah, and will not disobey thee in good" (lx. 12), she (Umm Atiyya) said: In (this pledge) was also included wailing. I said: Messenger of Allah, except members of such a tribe who helped me (in lamentation) during pre-Islamic days, there is left no alternative for me, but that I should also help them. Upon this the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: (Yes) but only in case of the members of such a tribe. (Using translation from Muslim 937)
"We were with the Prophet in a gathering and he said: 'Pledge to me that you will not associate anything with Allah, you will not steal, and you will not have unlawful sexual relations.' He recited the Verse to them (and said) Whoever does any of these things, and Allah conceals him then it is up to Allah, the mighty and Sublime: If He wills, He will punish him, and if He wills, He will forgive him. (Using translation from Nasāʾī 4210)
"I came to the Prophet with some other Ansari women to give our pledge. We said: 'O Messenger of Allah, we give you our pledge that we will not associate anything with Allah, we will not steal, we will not have unlawful sexual relations, we will not utter slander, fabricating from between our hands and feet, and we will not disobey you in goodness.' He said: 'As much as you can and are able.' We said: 'Allah and His Messenger are more merciful toward us. Com, let us give you our pledge, O Messenger of Allah! The Messenger of Allah said: 'I do not shake hands with women. Rather my word to a hundred women is like my word to one woman."' (Using translation from Nasāʾī 4181)

Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "I have five names: I am Muhammad and Ahmad; I am Al-Mahi through whom Allah will eliminate infidelity; I am Al-Hashir who will be the first to be resurrected, the people being resurrected there after; and I am also Al-ʿAqib (i.e. There will be no prophet after me). (Using translation from Bukhārī 3532)
[Machine] "Jesus, ﷺ , you are indeed bestowed with the resemblance of Jesus, ﷺ . Then Jesus was lifted up from a window in the house to the heavens. The Jews demanded the youth resembling Jesus, so they killed him and crucified him, and then they dispersed into three factions. One faction said, 'Allah was among us as He willed, then He ascended to the heavens. These are the Jacobites.' Another faction said, 'The son of God was among us as Allah willed, then Allah raised him to Himself. These are the Nestorians.' Another faction said, 'The servant of Allah and His Messenger was among us as Allah willed, then Allah raised him. These are the Muslims.' The two disbelieving factions plotted against the Muslim faction and killed them. Islam remained hidden until Allah sent Muhammad, ﷺ , and revealed: 'Then a faction of the children of Israel believed and a faction disbelieved.' [61:14] Meaning the faction that disbelieved during the time of Jesus, ﷺ , and the faction that believed during the time of Jesus. 'So We supported those who believed against their enemy.' [61:14] By manifesting Muhammad, ﷺ , and his religion against the religion of the disbelievers. 'So they became victorious.' [61:14]"

54.62 Sūrat al-Jumuʿah
We were sitting in the company of Allah's Apostle ﷺ that Sura al-Jumu'a was revealed to him and when he recited (these words):" Others from amongst them who have not yet joined them," a person amongst them (those who were sitting there) said: Messenger of Allah! But Allah's Apostle ﷺ made no reply, until he questioned him once, twice or thrice. And there was amongst us Salman the Persian. The Apostle of Allah ﷺ placed his hand on Salman and then said: Even if faith were near the Pleiades, a man from amongst these would surely find it. (Using translation from Muslim 2546b)
[Machine] We were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on Friday when a caravan carrying food passed by. The people went out to meet twelve men and the verse of Al-Jumu'ah was revealed.
54.63 Sūrat al-Munāfiqūn
[Machine] I came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and informed him. He swore that he did not say that, and people began to say, "Does the Messenger of Allah ﷺ lie?" Until I sat in the house out of fear that if people saw me, they would say, "You lied" until Allah revealed this verse, "When the hypocrites come to you, they say, 'We bear witness that you are indeed the Messenger of Allah.'" [Surah Al-Munafiqun 1]
[Machine] The hypocrites were asked: Are they more today or during the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ? He said, "Rather, they are more today; because at that time they used to conceal it, and today they openly express it."
While we were sitting in a circle in ʿAbdullah's gathering, Hudhaifa came and stopped before us, and greeted us and then said, "People better than you became hypocrites." Al-Aswad said: I testify the uniqueness of Allah! Allah says: "Verily! The hypocrites will be in the lowest depths of the Fire." (4.145) On that ʿAbdullah smiled and Hudhaifa sat somewhere in the Mosque. ʿAbdullah then got up and his companions (sitting around him) dispersed. Hudhaifa then threw a pebble at me (to attract my attention). I went to him and he said, "I was surprised at ʿAbdullah's smile though he understood what I said. Verily, people better than you became hypocrite and then repented and Allah forgave them." (Using translation from Bukhārī 4602)
[Machine] I was with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in the battle of Tabuk. Abdullah bin Ubayy said, "If we return to Medina, the honorable ones will surely expel the lowly ones." [Surah Al-Munafiqun 63:8] So, I went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and informed him. Abdullah swore that he did not say anything like that and no one from his people did either. They said, "What do you intend by this?" So, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent me a message saying, "Indeed, Allah has revealed your defense." Then, this verse was revealed: "Those who make excuses among the believers for not contributing their wealth and those who were left behind until they were satisfied [by the booty]" [Surah Al-Munafiqun 63:7], until it reached the verse: "If we return to Medina, the more honored [elite] will surely expel therefrom the more humble." [Surah Al-Munafiqun 63:8].
We went out with the Prophet ﷺ : on a journey and the people suffered from lack of provisions. So ʿAbdullah bin Ubai said to his companions, "Don't spend on those who are with Messenger of Allah ﷺ, that they may disperse and go away from him." He also said, "If we return to Medina, surely, the more honorable will expel therefrom the meaner. So I went to the Prophet ﷺ and informed him of that. He sent for ʿAbdullah bin Ubai and asked him, but ʿAbdullah bin Ubai swore that he did not say so. The people said, "Zaid told a lie to 'Messenger of Allah ﷺ." What they said distressed me very much. Later Allah revealed the confirmation of my statement in his saying:-- '(When the hypocrites come to you.' (63.1) So the Prophet ﷺ called them that they might ask Allah to forgive them, but they turned their heads aside. (Concerning Allah's saying: 'Pieces of wood propped up,' Zaid said; They were the most handsome men.) (Using translation from Bukhārī 4903)
We were along with Messenger of Allah ﷺ in an expedition that a person from amongst the emigrants struck at the back of a person from the Ansir. The Ansiri said: O Ansar! And the Muhijir said: O Emigrants! Thereupon Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: What are these proclamations of the Days of Ignorance? They said: Messenger of Allah, a person from the emigrants struck at the back of an Ansari, whereupon he said: It is something disgusting. 'Abdullah b. Ubayy heard it and said: They have indeed done it. By Allah, when we would return to Medina the respectable amongst them (the Ansar) would turn away the mean (the emigrants). Thereupon 'Umar said: Permit me so that I should strike the neck of this hypocrite. But he (the Holy Prophet) said: Leave him, the people may not say that Muhammad kills his companions. (Using translation from Muslim 2584b)

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ set out for Badr. When he reached Harrat-ul-Wabara (a place four miles from Medina) a man met him who was known for his valour and courage. The Companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ were pleased to see him. He said: I have come so that I may follow you and get a share from the booty. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him: Do you believe in Allah and His Apostle? He said: No. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Go back, I will not seek help from a Mushrik (polytheist). He went on until we reached Shajara, where the man met him again. He asked him the same question again and the man gave him the same answer. He said: Go back. Im will not seek help from a Mushrik. The man returned and overtook him at Baida'? He asked him as he had asked previously: Do you believe in Allah and His Apostle? The man said: Yes. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him: Then come along with us. (Using translation from Muslim 1817)

It was narrated from 'Abdullah that the shorter Surah, that speaks of women (At-Talaq), was revealed after Al-Baqarah. (Using translation from Nasāʾī 3523)
"It was said to Ibn 'Abbas concerning a woman who gives birth one day after her husband died: 'Can she get married?' He said: 'No, not until the longer of the two periods has ended.' He said: 'Allah says: And for those who are pregnant (whether they are divorced or their husbands are dead), their 'Iddah (prescribed period) is until they lay down their burden.' He said: 'That only applies in the case of divorce.' Abu Hurairah said: 'I agree with my brother's son' --meaning, Abu Salamah. He sent his slave Kuraib and told him: 'Go to Umm Salamah and ask her: Was this the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah?' He came back and said: 'Yes, Subai'ah Al-Aslamiyyah gave birth twenty days after her husband died, and the Messenger of Allah told her to get married, and Abu As-Sanabil was one of those who proposed marriage to her.'" Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed by two graves and said, "Both of them (persons in the grave) are being tortured, and they are not being tortured for a major sin. This one used not to save himself from being soiled with his urine, and the other used to go about with calumnies (among the people to rouse hostilities, e.g., one goes to a person and tells him that so-and-so says about him such-and-such evil things). The Prophet ﷺ then asked for a green leaf of a date-palm tree, split it into two pieces and planted one on each grave and said, "It is hoped that their punishment may be abated till those two pieces of the leaf get dried." We set out that night in search of a man who had been missing. We thought he might have been taken captive or killed, so we scattered in the valleys and the ravines to search for him. Then I met the Prophet ﷺ approaching me from the direction of Hira. I said, 'By my mother and father! We have been in search of a man who spent a night with some people.' He said, 'Indeed, he was called by the jinn, and I answered them by reciting the Quran to them.' He showed me their tracks and the traces of their fires."

The Prophet ﷺ set out with the intention of going to Suq ʿUkaz (market of ʿUkaz) along with some of his companions. At the same time, a barrier was put between the devils and the news of heaven. Fire commenced to be thrown at them. The Devils went to their people, who asked them, "What is wrong with you?" They said, "A barrier has been placed between us and the news of heaven. And fire has been thrown at us." They said, "The thing which has put a barrier between you and the news of heaven must be something which has happened recently. Go eastward and westward and see what has put a barrier between you and the news of heaven." Those who went towards Tuhama came across the Prophet at a place called Nakhla and it was on the way to Suq ʿUkaz and the Prophet ﷺ was offering the Fajr prayer with his companions. When they heard the Qur'an they listened to it and said, "By Allah, this is the thing which has put a barrier between us and the news of heaven." They went to their people and said, "O our people; verily we have heard a wonderful recital (Qur'an) which shows the true path; we believed in it and would not ascribe partners to our Lord." Allah revealed the following verses to his Prophet (Sura 'Jinn') (72): "Say: It has been revealed to me." And what was revealed to him was the conversation of the Jinns.
the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did not recite to the jinn and did not see them.
“The jinns used to ascent through the heavens, trying to listen about the Revealation. So when they heard a statement, they would add nine to it. The statement that they heard would be true, while what they added was false. So it was with the advent of the Messenger of Allah that they were prevented from their places. So they mentioned that to Iblis – and the stars were not shot at them before that. So Iblis said to them: ‘This is naught but an event that has occurred in the earth.’ So he sent out his armies, and they found the Messenger of Allah standing in Salat between two mountains” – I think he said “in Makkah” – “So they (returned) to meet with him (Iblis), and informed him. He said: ‘This is the event that has happened on the earth.’” (Using translation from Tirmidhī 3324)

[Machine] During the time of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ , she said, "Don't you recite this Surah, O Mu'ammil?" I said, "Yes." She said, "Verily, Allah enjoined the performance of the night prayer in the beginning of this Surah. So the Prophet ﷺ and his Companions stood in prayer all night until their feet swelled up. Then Allah held back the end of this Surah (i.e., revelation was stopped for a period of time) for twelve months. Then Allah revealed the leniency at the end of this Surah, so voluntary night prayers after the obligatory prayers are now optional."
[Machine] "She has the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , said to her, 'O daughter of Abu Bakr,' and then Qutaybah mentioned a word meaning, 'Be vigilant on your duties.' He used to spend the night with her, as much as Allah willed, until he got up for his prayer, and he rarely slept at night when Allah said to him, 'Stand [in prayer] at night, except for a little.' [Surah Al-Muzzammil, verse 2]."
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah said, "The Dajjal will come out and Allah will send Jesus son of Mary, ﷺ , as if he were Urwah bin Mas'ood Ath-Thaqafi. He will seek him out and kill him, and then the people will live for nine years without any enmity between them. Then Allah will send a cool wind from the direction of Sham, which will not spare anyone with even an atom's weight of faith in their hearts. The wind will seize them until even if someone were in the depths of a mountain, it would reach them. I heard it from the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ . The worst of people will remain, light as birds and with the minds of beasts, not recognizing what is good or rejecting what is evil. The devil will appear to them and command them to worship idols, and they will do so. Their sustenance will be good during that time, but then a blast will be blown in the trumpet and no one will be left except that they will be struck. Then Allah will send rain, from which the bodies of the people will grow. Another blast will be blown, and they will rise, looking around. Then it will be said, 'O people, come to your Lord,' and they will stand. Then it will be said, 'Drive out the people of the Fire,' and it will be asked, 'How many are they?' It will be said, 'Nine hundred and ninety-nine out of every one thousand.' On that day, the children will become grey-haired. And on that day, 'The covering of shame will be removed from the leg.' Muhammad bin Ja'far said, "Shu'bah narrated to me this hadith from An-Nu'man bin Salim, and I presented it to him."

[Machine] The Prophet of Allah ﷺ said regarding His saying, "He is the possessor of piety and forgiveness" [Al-Muddathir 56]: He (Allah) says, "Your Lord says, 'I am the most deserving of being feared, that a partner should be made with Me, and whoever fears that a partner should be made with Me, then I am the most deserving of forgiving him.'"

that he heard the Prophet ﷺ saying, "The Divine Inspiration was delayed for a short period but suddenly, as I was walking. I heard a voice in the sky, and when I looked up towards the sky, to my surprise, I saw the angel who had come to me in the Hira Cave, and he was sitting on a chair in between the sky and the earth. I was so frightened by him that I fell on the ground and came to my family and said (to them), 'Cover me! (with a blanket), cover me!' Then Allah sent the Revelation: "O, You wrapped up (In a blanket)! (Arise and warn! And your Lord magnify And keep pure your garments, And desert the idols." (74.1-5) (Using translation from Bukhārī 3238)

[Machine] I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying, "I passed by Hira and when I completed my visitation, I headed towards the valley. Then a caller called out, and I looked to my right, left, and behind, but I did not see anything. Then I looked above and saw Gabriel sitting on a throne between the heaven and the earth. I was overwhelmed with awe and returned to Khadijah and said, 'Cover me, cover me!' They covered me with a blanket and poured cold water over me, saying, 'O you, who have been enveloped!'"

Saʿid bin Jubair reported from Ibn ʿAbbas (regarding the explanation of the Verse: 'Do not move your tongue concerning (the Qur'an) to make haste therewith) . He said, "The Prophet ﷺ used to undergo great difficulty in receiving the Divine Inspiration and used to move his lips.' Ibn ʿAbbas said (to Saʿid), "I move them (my lips) as Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to move his lips." And Saʿid said (to me), "I move my lips as I saw Ibn ʿAbbas moving his lips," and then he moved his lips. So Allah revealed:-- '(O Muhammad!) Do not move your tongue concerning (the Qur'an) to make haste therewith. It is for Us to collect it and give you (O Muhammad) the ability to recite it. (i.e., to collect it in your chest and then you recite it).' (75.16-17) But when We have recited it, to you (O Muhammad through Gabriel) then follow you its recital.' (75.18) This means, "You should listen to it and keep quiet and then it is upon Us to make you recite it." The narrator added, "So Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to listen whenever Gabriel came to him, and when Gabriel left, the Prophet ﷺ would recite the Qur'an as Gabriel had recited it to him." (Using translation from Bukhārī 7524)
