54. Tafsīr (Exegesis)
A Jew said to ʿUmar: "If this Verse had been revealed to us, we would have taken it as a festival (Eid): 'This day, I have perfected your religion for you.'" Umar said: "I know the day when it was revealed and the night on which it was revealed: a Friday night when we were with Messenger of Allah in Arafat." (Using translation from Nasāʾī 3002)
[Machine] Indeed, it is the last surah that was revealed. So whatever you find in it as permissible, consider it permissible. And whatever you find in it as forbidden, consider it forbidden. And I asked it about the character of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , and it said, "The Quran."
[Machine] Whoever disbelieves in stoning has disbelieved in the Quran from the perspective of not considering it, and this is the saying of Allah the Exalted: "O people of the Scripture, there has come to you Our Messenger making clear to you much of what you used to conceal of the Scripture and overlooking much." [Al-Ma'idah 15] So, stoning was among what they used to conceal.
[Machine] "O Messenger of Allah, we do not say what the Children of Israel said to Moses, 'So go, you and your Lord, and fight. Indeed, we are sitting here.' But rather, wait and we will be with you, so it is as if it is a secret from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ."
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ went to Badr and consulted with the Muslims. Abu Bakr pointed to him, then he consulted with a man and 'Umar pointed to him. Then he consulted with them and the Ansar said, "O people of the Ansar, beware! The Messenger of Allah ﷺ intends to go." So we should not say as the Children of Israel said to Musa (Moses), 'Go, you and your Lord, and fight. Verily, we are staying right here.' (Quran 5:24) By Him who has sent you with the truth, if you were to plunge into the sea, we would follow you."
Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Whenever a person is murdered unjustly, there is a share from the burden of the crime on the first son of Adam for he was the first to start the tradition of murdering." (Using translation from Bukhārī 3335)
54.5 Sūrat al-Māʾidah
Some people from 'Ukl came to the Prophet [SAW] but the climate of Al-Madinah did not suit them. The Prophet [SAW] told them to go to the camels that had been given in Sadaqah and drink some of their milk and urine. They did that, then they killed their herdsman and drove off the camels. The Prophet [SAW] sent (men) after them, and they were brought to him. He had their hands and feet cut off, and their eyes gouged out, and he did not have (their wounds) cauterized, and he left them to die. Then Allah, the Mighty and Sublime, revealed: "The recompense of those who wage war against Allah and His Messenger." (Using translation from Nasāʾī 4025)
The people passed by the Messenger of Allah ﷺ with a Jew who was blackened with charcoal and who was being flogged. He called them and said: Is this the prescribed punishment for a fornicator? They said: Yes. He then called on a learned man among them and asked him: I adjure you by Allah Who revealed the Torah to Moses, do you find this prescribed punishment for a fornicator in your divine Book? He said: By Allah, no. If you had not adjured me about this, I should not have informed you. We find stoning to be prescribed punishment for a fornicator in our Divine Book. But it (fornication) became frequent in our people of rank; so when we seized a person of rank, we left him alone, and when we seized a weak person, we inflicted the prescribed punishment on him. So we said: Come, let us agree on something which may be enforced equally on people of higher and lower rank. So we agreed to blacken the face of a criminal with charcoal, and flog him, and we abandoned stoning. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then said: O Allah, I am the first to give life to Thy command which they have killed. So he commanded regarding him (the Jew) and he was stoned to death. Allah Most High then sent down: "O Apostle, let not those who race one another into unbelief, make thee grieve..." up to "They say: If you are given this, take it, but if not, beware!...." up to "And if any do fail to judge by (the light of) what Allah hath revealed, they are (no better than) unbelievers," about Jews, up to "And if any do fail to judge by (the right of) what Allah hath revealed, they are no better than) wrong-doers" about Jews: and revealed the verses up to "And if any do fail to judge by (the light of) what Allah hath revealed, they are (no better than) those who rebel." About this he said: This whole verse was revealed about the infidels. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 4448)

“Rubai, the paternal aunt of Anas, broke the tooth of a girl and they (her family) asked (the girl's family) to let her off, but they refused. They offered to pay compensatory money, but they refused. So they came to Prophet ﷺ who ordered retaliation. Anas bin Nadr said: 'O Messenger of Allah ﷺ, will the tooth of Rubai' be broken? By the One Who sent you with the truth, it will not be broken!' The Prophet ﷺ said: 'O Anas, what Allah has decreed is retaliation.' So the people accepted that and forgave her. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'there are among the slaves of Allah those who, if they swear by Allah, Allah fulfills their oath.'” (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 2649)

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Whosoever gives in charity from his own body, Allah will expiate from him sins equivalent to that (act of charity)."
"I was reclining in the presence of 'Aishah when she said: 'O Abu 'Aishah! There are three things, whoever speaks of one of them, then he has uttered one of the worst lies against Allah. Whoever claims that Muhammad saw his Lord. Then he has uttered one the worst lies against Allah, Allah says: No vision can grasp Him, but His grasp is over all vision, and He is the Most Subtle, Well-Acquainted with all things (6:103). It is not for any human being that Allah should speak to him unless (it be) by revelation or from behind a veil (42:51).' I was reclining so I sat up an said: 'O Mother of the Believers! Take your time with me and do not be hasty with me! Did Allah Most High not say: And indeed he saw him at a second descent (53:13). (And) 'And indeed he saw him in the clear horizon (81:23).' She said 'By Allah! I was the first who asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about this. He said: "That was only Jibril. I did not see him in the appearance he was created in except for these two times. I saw him descending from the heavens, and due to his tremendous size he filled what was between the heavens and the earth." "And whoever claimed that Muhammad hid anything that Allah revealed to him, then he uttered one of the worst lies against Allah. Allah says: O Messenger! Proclaim what has been sent down to you from your Lord (5:67)." "And whoever claimed that he ﷺ knew what would be tomorrow, then he has uttered one of the worst lies against Allah. Allah says: Say: 'None in the heavens and in the earth knows the unseen but Allah (27:65).'" (Using translation from Tirmidhī 3068)

[Machine] This verse was revealed during the time of Negus and his companions.
"When they hear what has been revealed to the Messenger, you will see their eyes overflowing with tears." [Surah Al-Ma'idah, 83]

This Verse: "Allah will not punish you for what is unintentional in your oaths." (5.89) was revealed about a man's state men (during his talk), "No, by Allah," and "Yes, by Allah." (Using translation from Bukhārī 4613)
We used to participate in the holy wars carried on by the Prophet ﷺ and we had no women (wives) with us. So we said (to the Prophet ﷺ ). "Shall we castrate ourselves?" But the Prophet ﷺ forbade us to do that and thenceforth he allowed us to marry a woman (temporarily) by giving her even a garment, and then he recited: "O you who believe! Do not make unlawful the good things which Allah has made lawful for you." (Using translation from Bukhārī 4615)
[Machine] The prohibition of alcohol was revealed in two tribes of the Ansar. They were drinking until they became intoxicated and started to harm each other. When they sobered up, the man saw the marks on his face, head, and beard, and said, "My brother did this to me." They were brothers with no animosity in their hearts. By Allah, if my Lord were compassionate and merciful, He would not have done this to me." And so, animosity arose in their hearts. Then Allah revealed, "Indeed, intoxicants, gambling... are but defilement... So will you not desist?" Some people said, "It is impure and in the stomach of so-and-so, so-and-so was killed on the Day of Badr and so-and-so was killed on the Day of Uhud." Then Allah revealed, "There shall be no sin upon those who believe and do righteous deeds... when they fear Allah and believe and do righteous deeds."

Paradise and Hell were presented to me and I have never seen the good and evil as (I did) today. And if you were to know you would have wept more and laughed less. He (the narrator) said: There was nothing more burdensome for the Companions of Messenger of Allah ﷺ than this. They covered their heads and the sound of weeping was heard from them. Then there stood up 'Umar and he said: We are well pleased with Allah as our Lord, with Islam as our code of life and with Muhammad as our Apostle, and it was at that time that a person stood up and he said: Who is my father? Thereupon he (the Holy Prophet) said: Your father is so and so; and there was revealed the verse:" O you who believe, do not ask about matters which, if they were to be made manifest to you (in terms of law), might cause to you harm" (v. 101). [Machine] I came to the Prophet and he looked at me attentively and straightened up. He said, "Do you have any camels or sheep?" I replied, "God has blessed me with plenty of both and they are flourishing." He then asked, "Don't you mix them together, separating the males from the females, and you can discern between them by their ears?" I said, "Indeed, I do just that, with the help of God and the knowledge bestowed upon me."

Abu Bakr stood up and praised and glorified Allah, then he said: O people, you recite this verse: ʿO you who believe! Take care of your ownselves. If you follow the (right) guidance (and enjoin what is right (Islamic Monotheism and all that Islam orders one to do) and forbid what is wrong (polytheism, disbelief and all that Islam has forbidden)] no hurt can come to you from those who are in errorʿ (al-Ma'idah 5:105]. We heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: ʿlf the people see evil and do not change it, soon Allah will send His punishment upon them all.ʿ (Using translation from Aḥmad 1)

The Prophet ﷺ said, "You will be gathered (on the Day of Judgment), bare-footed, naked and not circumcised." He then recited:--'As We began the first creation, We, shall repeat it: A Promise We have undertaken: Truly we shall do it.' (21.104) He added, "The first to be dressed on the Day of Resurrection, will be Abraham, and some of my companions will be taken towards the left side (i.e. to the (Hell) Fire), and I will say: 'My companions! My companions!' It will be said: 'They renegade from Islam after you left them.' Then I will say as the Pious slave of Allah (i.e. Jesus) said. 'And I was a witness Over them while I dwelt amongst them. When You took me up You were the Watcher over them, And You are a witness to all things. If You punish them. They are Your slaves And if You forgive them, Verily you, only You are the All-Mighty, the All-Wise." (5.120-121) (Using translation from Bukhārī 3349)
