54. Tafsīr (Exegesis)
[Machine] "Glorified is He who took His servant by night from the Sacred Mosque to the Farthest Mosque." [Quran 17:1] He said, "He did not pray in it, and if he had prayed in it, it would have been recorded for you as the Salah in the Ka'bah is recorded for you."
I used to read the Qur'an with my father in the vestibule (before the door of the mosque). When I recited the ayat (verses) concerning prostration, he prostrated himself. I said to him: Father, do you prostrate yourself in the path? He said: I heard Abu Dharr saying: I asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about the mosque that was first set up on the earth. He said: Masjid Harim. I said: Then which next? He said: The Masjid al-Aqsa. I said: How long is the space of time between the two? He said: Forty years. He (then) further said: The earth is a mosque for you, so wherever you are at the time of prayer, pray there. (Using translation from Muslim 520b)
That he heard Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying, "When the people of Quraish did not believe me (i.e. the story of my Night Journey), I stood up in Al-Hijr and Allah displayed Jerusalem in front of me, and I began describing it to them while I was looking at it." (Using translation from Bukhārī 3886)
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ traveled to the House of the Holy in Jerusalem, then came back from his journey and told them about his journey, the sign of the House of the Holy, and their camel. So some people said, "We do not believe in Muhammad," so they turned back as disbelievers. So Allah punished them along with Abu Jahl.
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Indeed, I saw myself in the stone and the Quraysh were asking me about my night journey. They asked me about things from the Al-Aqsa Mosque that I did not mention, so I became saddened like I have never been saddened before. Allah then raised it for me to see. They did not ask me about anything except that I informed them about it."
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "On the night I was taken on the Night Journey, I woke up in Makkah. I realized that people would deny me, so I sat in seclusion, feeling sad. Then the enemy of Allah, Abu Jahl, passed by me. He came and sat next to me and asked me mockingly, 'Did anything happen to you?' I replied, 'Yes.' He asked, 'What is it?' I said, 'I was taken on a night journey.' He asked, 'Where did you go?' I said, 'To the Al-Aqsa Mosque.' He asked, 'Then you appeared among us in the morning?' I replied, 'Yes.' Abu Jahl did not realize that he was being lied to out of fear that he might deny the narration if people were to believe him. He said, 'If I call your people, will you address them?' I said, 'Yes.' Abu Jahl called upon the people of Bani Ka'b bin Lu'ay and they gathered until they sat next to him. He said, 'Tell your people what you told me.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'I was taken on the Night Journey.' They asked, 'Where did you go?' He replied, 'To the Al-Aqsa Mosque.' They asked, 'Then you appeared among us in the morning?' He replied, 'Yes.' Among those present were some who had traveled to that city and seen the mosque. They asked, 'Can you describe the mosque to us?' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'So I described the mosque to them, and I continued to describe it until they were satisfied with my description.' The mosque was then brought to me, and I continued to describe it as I looked at it. There was also another incident that I forgot." The people said, "As for the description, it was accurate."
Meat was one day brought to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and a foreleg was offered to him, a part which he liked. He sliced with his teeth a piece out of it and said: I shall be the leader of mankind on the Day of Resurrection. Do you know why? Allah would gather in one plain the earlier and the later (of the human race) on the Day of Resurrection. Then the voice of the proclaimer would be heard by all of them and the eyesight would penetrate through all of them and the sun would come near. People would then experience a degree of anguish, anxiety and agony which they shall not be able to bear and they shall not be able to stand. Some people would say to the others: Don you see in which trouble you are? Don't you see what (misfortune) has overtaken you? Why don't you find one who should intercede for you with your Lord? Some would say to the others: Go to Adam. And they would go to Adam and say: O Adam, thou art the father of mankind. Allah created thee by His own Hand and breathed in thee of His spirit and ordered the angels to prostrate before thee. Intercede for us with thy Lord Don't you see in what (trouble) we are? Don't you see what (misfortune) has overtaken us? Adam would say: Verily, my Lord is angry, to an extent to which He had never been angry before nor would He be angry afterward. Verily, He forbade me (to go near) that tree and I disobeyed Him. I am concerned with my own self. Go to someone else; go to Noah. They would come to Noah and would say: O Noah, thou art the first of the Messengers (sent) on the earth (after Adam), and Allah named thee as a" Grateful Servant," intercede for us with thy Lord. Don't you see in what (trouble) we are? Don't you see what (misfortune) has overtaken us? He would say: Verily, my Lord is angry today as He had never been angry before, and would never be angry afterwards. There had emanated a curse from me with which I cursed my people. I am concerned with only myself, I am concerned only with myself; you better go to Ibrahim (peace be upon him). They would go to Ibrahim and say: Thou art the apostle of Allah and His Friend amongst the inhabitants of the earth; intercede for us with thy Lord. Don't you see in which (trouble) we are? Don't you see what (misfortune) has overtaken us? Ibrahim would say to them: Verily, my Lord is today angry as He had never been angry before and would never be angry afterwards. and (Ibrahim) would mention his lies (and then say): I am concerned only with myself, I am concerned only with myself. You better go to someone else: go to Moses. They would come to Moses (peace be upon him) and say: O Moses, thou art Messenger of Allah, Allah blessed thee with His messengership and His conversation amongst people. Intercede for us with thy Lord. Don't you see in what (trouble) we are? Don't you see what (misfortune) has overtaken us? Moses (peace be upon him) would say to them: Verily. my Lord is angry as He had never been angry before and would never be angry afterwards. I, in fact, killed a person whom I had not been ordered to kill. I am concerned with myself, I am concerned with myself. You better go to Jesus (peace be upon him). They would come to Jesus and would say: O Jesus, thou art the messenger of Allah and thou conversed with people in the cradle, (thou art) His Word which I-Ie sent down upon Mary. and (thou art) the Spirit from Him; so intercede for us with thy Lord. Don't you see (the trouble) in which we are? Don't you see (the misfortune) that has overtaken us? Jesus (peace be upon him) would say: Verily, my Lord is angry today as He had never been angry before or would ever be angry afterwards. He mentioned no sin of his. (He simply said: ) I am concerned with myself, I am concerned with myself; you go to someone else: better go to Muhammad ﷺ. They would come to me and say: O Mahammad, thou art the messenger of Allah and the last of the apostles. Allah has pardoned thee all thy previous and later sins. Intercede for us with thy Lord; don't you see in which (trouble) we are? Don't you see what (misfortune) has overtaken us? I shall then set off and come below the Throne and fall down prostrate before my Lord; then Allah would reveal to me and inspire me with some of His Praises and Glorifications which He had not revealed to anyone before me. He would then say: Muhammad, raise thy head; ask and it would be granted; intercede and intercession would be accepted I would then raise my head and say: O my Lord, my people, my people. It would be said: O Muhammad, bring in by the right gate of Paradise those of your people who would have no account to render. They would share with the people some other door besides this door. The Prophet then said: By Him in Whose Hand is the life of Muhammad, verify the distance between two door leaves of the Paradise is as great as between Mecca and Hajar, or as between Mecca and Busra. [Machine] There were some people who used to worship the jinn, then the jinn accepted Islam and the humans remained steadfast in their worship. Then Allah revealed, "Those whom they invoke seek means of access to their Lord" [al-Isra' 17:57].
[Machine] Abdullah narrated that there was a group of humans who worshipped a group of jinn. Then the humans accepted Islam, but those who used to worship the jinn continued in their worship. So Allah revealed the verse "Those whom they invoke seek means of access to their Lord" [Al-Isra 57].
[Machine] From Abdullah, regarding his saying, "Those are the ones who invoke, seeking means to their Lord." [17:57]. He said, "There were people among mankind who worshipped the jinn. Then the jinn embraced Islam and these people adhered to their religion."
[Machine] The people of Mecca asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to make the hill of Safa into gold for them and to remove the mountains so that they could plant crops. Allah ﷻ said, "If you wish, I can give them what they ask for, but if they disbelieve, they will be destroyed like those before them. And if you wish, I can delay their punishment for a while, hoping that they may change." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "No, I will delay the punishment for a while." So Allah revealed this verse, "And nothing prevents Us from sending signs except that the former people denied them. And We gave Thamud the she-camel as a visible sign." [Isra 59]

Good is in your hands and evil is not attributed to you. The guided one is the one you have guided, your slave and the son of your slave.
When the Prophet ﷺ entered Mecca on the day of the Conquest, there were 360 idols around the Kaʿba. The Prophet ﷺ started striking them with a stick he had in his hand and was saying, "Truth has come and Falsehood will neither start nor will it reappear. (Using translation from Bukhārī 4287)
[Machine] When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ opened Makkah, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ assigned Zubair ibn al-Awwam to one of the Muzaynah (two tribes) and Khalid ibn al-Walid to the other. He looked at me in Kabkaba and called me. I said, "Here I am, Messenger of Allah." He said, "Call out to me with the Ansar." So I called out to them, and they surrounded the Messenger of Allah ﷺ as if they were meeting by appointment. He said, "O Ansar, Quraysh has gathered against us. So when you meet them, attack them until you meet me at Safa, Safa is your meeting place." Abu Hurairah said, "We did not meet any of them except that we fought them. Then Abu Sufyan came and said, 'O Messenger of Allah, Quraysh has surrendered, there is no Quraysh after today.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Whoever shuts his door, he is safe. Whoever enters the house of Abu Sufyan, he is safe. Whoever lays down his weapon, he is safe. And the leaders and chiefs of Quraysh have taken refuge in the Ka'bah,' meaning they have entered it." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then came and circled the Ka'bah, and he struck those idols with the tip of his bow saying, "The truth has come and falsehood has vanished. Indeed, falsehood is ever bound to perish." (Quran 17:81) Then, when he finished and prayed, he took hold of the door handle and said, "O people of Quraysh, what do you say?" They said, "We say, the son of a brother and a cousin, a merciful and noble man." Then, he repeated this statement to them. They said the same thing. He said, "Indeed, I say what my brother Yusuf said, 'No blame will there be upon you today. May Allah forgive you, and He is the most merciful of the merciful.'" (Quran 12:92) So they pledged allegiance to him on Islam. Then, he went to Safa for the meeting with the Ansar. He stood on Safa in a place where he could see the Ka'bah, and he praised and thanked Allah, and mentioned His victory to them. Abu Hurairah said, "The elderly men began to cry until their beards were soaked with tears." Then they said, "We seek forgiveness from Allah and His Messenger, and by Allah, we said nothing except out of confidence in Allah and His Messenger." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Indeed, Allah has confirmed your words and the words of His Messenger and has accepted your pledge."

"I took a walk with the Prophet ﷺ on a farm in Al-Madinah, and when he reclined upon a palm-leaf stalk, a group of Jews were passing by. Some of them said, 'We should question him.' Others said: 'Do not question him for he might tell you something that you do not like.' They said to him: 'O Abul-Qasim, narrated to us about the Ruh.' The Prophet ﷺ stood for some time, he raised his head toward the heavens, and I recognized revelation was coming to him, until the revelation ceased. Then he ﷺ said: "The Ruh is one of the things, the knowledge of which is only with my Lord. And of knowledge, you have been given only a little (17:85).'" (Using translation from Tirmidhī 3141)

(regarding): 'Neither say your, prayer aloud, nor say it in a low tone.' (17.110) This Verse was revealed while Messenger of Allah ﷺ was hiding himself in Mecca. When he prayed with his companions, he used to raise his voice with the recitation of Qur'an, and if the pagans happened to hear him, they would abuse the Qur'an, the One who revealed it and the one who brought it. Therefore Allah said to His Prophet : 'Neither say your prayer aloud.' (17.110) i.e. do not recite aloud lest the pagans should hear you, but follow a way between.
