54. Tafsīr (Exegesis)
The last Verse that was revealed was: 'They ask you for a legal verdict: Say: Allah directs (thus) about Al-Kalalah (those who leave no descendants or ascendants as heirs).' And the last Sura which was revealed was Baraatun (9) . (Using translation from Bukhārī 4654)
“I heard the Prophet ﷺ say, during the Farewell Pilgrimage: ‘O people! Which day is the most sacred?’ three times. They said: ‘The day of the greatest Hajj.’ He said: ‘Your blood and your wealth and your honor are sacred to one another, as sacred as this day of yours, in this land of your. No sinner commits a sin but it is against himself. No father is to be punished for the sins of his child, and no child is to be punished for the sins of his father. Satan has despaired of ever being worshipping in this land of yours, but he will be obeyed in some matters which you regard as insignificant, and he will be content with that. All the blood feuds of the Ignorance days are abolished, and the first of them that I abolish is the blood feud of Harith bin ‘Abdul-Muttalib, who was nursed among Banu Laith and killed by Hudhail. All the usuries of the Ignorance days are abolished, but you will have your capital. Do not wrong others and you will not be wronged. O my nation, have I conveyed (the message)?’ (He asked this) three times. They said: ‘Yes.’ He said: ‘O Allah, bear witness!’ three times.” (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 3055)
"I came with Ali bin Abi Talib when the Messenger of Allah sent him to the people of Makkah with news of the dissolution of treaty obligations." He said: "How did you announced that no one would enter Paradise but a believing soul, no one was to circumambulate the House naked: whoever had a treaty with the Messenger of Allah, then for its period, or, it extended to four months, and when four months had passed, and that Allah is free from (all) obligations to the idolaters and so is His Messenger. No idolater was to perform Hajj after this year. I kept on announcing it until my vice grew hoarse." (Using translation from Nasāʾī 2958)
[Machine] "There are only four hypocrites remaining. Today, one of them is an elderly sheikh. If he were to drink cold water, he would not feel its coldness."

[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ said, "On the Day of Judgment, a person will have a treasure which appears to be a brave and audible companion. The person will escape from it and seek it, saying, 'I am your treasure.' He will not cease to possess it until his finger is swallowed by it."
[Machine] On the authority of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , he said, "There will be a treasure for one of you on the Day of Resurrection, husky and red, and its owner will follow it wishing to be saved from it, and he will continue to follow it until it is thrust into his mouth."
[Machine] I came to Al-Rabdhah and visited Abu Dhar. I asked him, "What has come to you?" He said, "I was in Sham (Syria) and I recited this verse {And those who hoard up gold and silver and spend it not} [At-Tawbah, 9:34] until the end of the verse." Muawiyah said, "This verse was not revealed about us, it is only revealed about the people of the Book." I said, "It was revealed about us and the people of the Book." This continued until there was a disagreement and a dispute. I wrote to Uthman complaining about them. Uthman, may Allah have mercy on him, replied, "Come forward." So, I came to Madinah and the people followed me as if they had never seen me before. I entered upon Uthman and complained to him about that. He said, "Keep quiet and stay close." So, I stayed in this house and by Allah, if I were commanded to walk towards the Abyssinians, I would not disobey or retract my statement.

[Machine] When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed away, the Ansar said, "Among us is a leader, and among you is a leader." Umar said, "Who has these three qualities?" "When they were in the cave," [Al-Tawbah 9:40] Who are they? "When he said to his companion," [Al-Tawbah 9:40] Who is he? "Do not grieve, indeed Allah is with us" [Al-Tawbah 9:40] Who are they? Then he extended his hand and the people pledged allegiance to him with a good and beautiful pledge.
While we were with Messenger of Allah ﷺ who was distributing (i.e. some property), there came Dhu-l- Khuwaisira, a man from the tribe of Bani Tamim and said, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! Do Justice." The Prophet said, "Woe to you! Who could do justice if I did not? I would be a desperate loser if I did not do justice." ʿUmar said, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! Allow me to chop his head off." The Prophet ﷺ said, "Leave him, for he has companions who pray and fast in such a way that you will consider your fasting negligible in comparison to theirs. They recite Qur'an but it does not go beyond their throats (i.e. they do not act on it) and they will desert Islam as an arrow goes through a victim's body, so that the hunter, on looking at the arrow's blade, would see nothing on it; he would look at its Risaf and see nothing: he would look at its Na,di and see nothing, and he would look at its Qudhadh ( 1 ) and see nothing (neither meat nor blood), for the arrow has been too fast even for the blood and excretions to smear. The sign by which they will be recognized is that among them there will be a black man, one of whose arms will resemble a woman's breast or a lump of meat moving loosely. Those people will appear when there will be differences amongst the people." I testify that I heard this narration from Messenger of Allah ﷺ and I testify that ʿAli bin Abi Talib fought with such people, and I was in his company. He ordered that the man (described by the Prophet ﷺ ) should be looked for. The man was brought and I looked at him and noticed that he looked exactly as the Prophet ﷺ had described him. (Using translation from Bukhārī 3610)

He (the Holy Prophet) gave to the chiefs of Najd and ignored us. Upon this the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: I have done it with a view to conciliating between them. Then there came a person with thick beard, prominent cheeks, deep sunken eyes and protruding forehead and shaven head. He said: Muhammad, fear Allah. Upon this the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "If I disobey Allah, who would then obey Him? Have I not been (sent as the) most trustworthy among the people of the world? But you do not repose trust in me." That person then went back. A person among the people then sought permission (from the Holy Prophet) for his murder. According to some, it was Khalid b. Walid who sought the permission. Upon this the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, said: From this very person's posterity there would arise people who would recite the Qur'an, but it would not go beyond their throat; they would kill the followers of Islam and would spare the idol-worshippers. They would glance through the teachings of Islam so hurriedly just as the arrow passes through the pray. If I were to ever find them I would kill them like 'Ad. (Using translation from Muslim 1064a)

[Machine] He said, when Allah fulfilled His promise to His Messenger with regards to the spoils of war, they say, on the day of Hunayn, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was giving a hundred camels to some men of the Quraysh. Then a man from the Ansar said, "May Allah forgive the Messenger of Allah. He gives men from the Quraysh and leaves us while our swords are still dripping with their blood?" The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Verily, I give men who have newly embraced Islam in order to reconcile their hearts. Do you not wish that people take the wealth and you take the Messenger of Allah ﷺ with you? By Allah, when you go back, it will be better than what they have." They said, "Yes, O Messenger of Allah, we are pleased with that."

"When the Messenger of Allah commanded us to give in charity, Abu 'Aqil give half a Sa', and another man brought much more than that. The hypocrites said: 'Allah has no need of the charity of the former, and the latter only did it to show off. Then the following was revealed: 'Those who defame such of the believers who give charity voluntarily, and such who could not find to give charity except what is available to them."'[1] (Using translation from Nasāʾī 2530)

"When 'Abdullah bin Ubayy died, his son came to the Prophet and said: 'Give me your shirt so that I may shroud him in it, and (some and) offer the (funeral) prayer for him, and pray for forgiveness for him'. So he gave him his shirt then he said: 'When you have finished, inform me and I will offer the (funeral) prayer for him.' But 'Umar stopped him and said: 'Hasn't Allah forbidden you to offer the (funeral) prayer for the hypocrites?' He said: 'I have two options. Whether you ask forgiveness for them (hypocrites) or ask no forgiveness for them." So he offered the (funeral) prayer for him. Then Allah, Most High, revealed: 'And never pray (funeral prayer) for any of them (hypocrites) who dies, nor stand at his grave.' So he stopped offering the (funeral) prayer for them." (Using translation from Nasāʾī 1900)
When ʿAbdullah bin Ubai bin Salul died, Messenger of Allah ﷺ was called upon to offer his funeral prayer. When Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood up to offer the prayer, I got up quickly and said, "O Allah's Apostle! Are you going to pray for Ibn Ubai and he said so and so on such and such occasions?" And started mentioning all that he had said. Messenger of Allah ﷺ smiled and said, "O ʿUmar! Go away from me." When I talked too much he said, "I have been given the choice and so I have chosen (to offer the prayer). Had I known that he would be forgiven by asking for Allah's forgiveness for more than seventy times, surely I would have done so." (ʿUmar added): Messenger of Allah ﷺ offered his funeral prayer and returned and after a short while the two verses of Surat Bara' were revealed: i.e. "And never (O Muhammad) pray for any of them who dies . . . (to the end of the verse) rebellion (9.84)" -- (ʿUmar added), "Later I astonished at my daring before Messenger of Allah ﷺ on that day. And Allah and His Apostle know better." (Using translation from Bukhārī 1366)

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to ask his companions, "Has anyone among you had a dream?" Whoever wanted to share their dream would do so. One day, he said to us, "I was brought by two angels last night. They told me to come with them, so I went along. We arrived at a city made of gold and silver bricks. We reached the city gate and asked for it to be opened. It was opened for us, and we entered. Inside, we were greeted by people who were, physically, a mix of the most beautiful and the most ugly human beings. The angels told them to go and they fell into a river. Surprisingly, the river flowed as if it were pure milk in terms of whiteness. They went into the river and then returned to us, completely transformed into the most beautiful forms. They said to me, 'This is the Paradise of Eden, and this is where you will reside.' While I was ascending, I saw a palace and they said to me, 'This is your dwelling place.' I said to them, 'May Allah bless you. Allow me to enter it.' They replied, 'Not now, you will enter it later.' The people who were a mixture of good and ugly then said, 'Indeed, they have combined good deeds with bad ones, so Allah has forgiven and pardoned them.'"
Note: Due to length limitations, I had to shorten the translation. The final phrase "مُخْتَصَرٌ" means "shortened," as in, the passage was shortened.

[Machine] On the authority of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), he said, "There is no believer who gives charity from lawful earnings and Allah does not accept except what is good, except that Allah takes it with His right hand and nurtures it as one of you nurtures a young horse or young camel, until it becomes like Safa or Marwa, until it reaches the state of maturity."
(Note: Safa and Marwa are two small hills in Mecca that are associated with the rituals of Hajj pilgrimage.)
"Two men argued about the Masjid which was founded on piety from the first day. [1] One man said that it was the Masjid of Quba', and the other said that it was the Masjid of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'It is this Masjid of mine.'" [1] At-Tawbah 9:108. (Using translation from Nasāʾī 697)

"When Abu Talib was dying, the Prophet came to him and found Abu Jahl and 'Abdullah bin Abi Umayyah with him. He said: 'O uncle, say La ilaha illallah(there is none worthy of worship except Allah), a word with which I will defend you before Allah.' Abu Jahl and 'Abdullah bin Abi Umayyah said: 'O Abu Talib, are you turning away from the religion of 'Abdul-Muttalib.' Then the Prophet said: 'I will keep on asking for Allah's forgiveness for you unless I am forbidden to do so.' Then the following was revealed: It is not (proper) for the Prophet and those who believe to ask Allah's forgiveness for the idolaters. And the following was revealed: Verily, you (O Muhammad) guide not whom you like." (Using translation from Nasāʾī 2035)

[Machine] I said to Anas, "Did you see the people of the Ansar using this name? Were you called by it or did Allah, blessed and exalted, give it to you?" He said, "No, Allah named us with it."
[Machine] I heard Ka'b ibn Malik narrating his story when he lagged behind the Messenger of Allah ﷺ during the Battle of Tabuk. He said, "While I was sitting in a state as Allah described us, my soul and the earth became narrow on me due to its vastness. I then heard someone screaming on top of a mountain with the loudest voice, 'O Ka'b ibn Malik, rejoice!' I prostrated out of gratitude and knew that relief had come and that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had announced the forgiveness of Allah upon us when he performed the Fajr prayer. The people rushed to give me the good news, and my companion went ahead to give me the glad tidings. A man came running towards me on a horse that belonged to him, and it had traveled for a moment from Aslam to inform me. He reached me on top of the mountain, and his voice arrived before the horse. When the man whose voice I had heard came to me, he conveyed the good news to me. I took off my garment and gave it to him as a sign of gladness, for, by Allah, I did not possess any other garment that day. I then wore two garments and went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ . People came to congratulate me in groups until I entered the mosque. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was sitting with his Companions, and Talhah ibn Ubaydullah stood up until he reached me and congratulated me. By Allah, no man from the Muhajirun except him had stood up to congratulate me. I will never forget his deed for Talhah. When I greeted the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while his face was radiant with joy, he said, 'Rejoice in the good news of a day that has passed by you which has not appeared since your mother gave birth to you.' I asked him, 'Is it from you, O Messenger of Allah, or from Allah?' He replied, 'No, rather it is from Allah.' Whenever the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was excessively overjoyed, his face would radiate like a piece of the moon. We recognized it from him. When I sat before him, I said, 'O Messenger of Allah, verily, my repentance includes giving away in charity my wealth to Allah, the Blessed and Exalted, and to you, O Messenger of Allah.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Hold on to some of your wealth, as it will be better for you.' I said, 'Then I will keep my share of the arrow that I own in Khaybar.' I said, 'O Messenger of Allah, surely Allah, the Most High, saved me through my truthfulness, and part of my repentance is that I will not speak anything but the truth as long as I live.' By Allah, no one from the Muslims has been put to the test by Allah in speaking the truth since I said that to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ . I would rather that Allah keeps me safe from it as long as I live.' Then Allah (ﷻ) revealed the verses: 'Indeed, Allah has forgiven the Prophet and the Muhajirin and the Ansar who followed him in the hour of difficulty' (Quran 9:117) till Allah's saying: 'And [He also forgave] the three who were left behind' (Quran 9:118). The person whom Allah mentioned as being left behind was not one of those who stayed behind from the battle; instead, it was in reference to those who presented excuses and sought the Messenger of Allah's ﷺ permission. Allah delayed the matter until a decision was made regarding them. Therefore, Allah mentioned them: 'And upon the three who were left behind' (Quran 9:118)."
