قَوْلُهُ تَعَالَى: {إِنَّمَا الْخَمْرُ وَالْمَيْسِرُ} [المائدة: 90]

nasai-kubra:11086Muḥammad b. ʿAbd al-Raḥīm Ṣāʿiqah > Ḥajjāj b. Minhāl > Rabīʿah b. Kulthūm b. Jabr from his father > Saʿīd b. Jubayr > Ibn ʿAbbās

[Machine] The prohibition of alcohol was revealed in two tribes of the Ansar. They were drinking until they became intoxicated and started to harm each other. When they sobered up, the man saw the marks on his face, head, and beard, and said, "My brother did this to me." They were brothers with no animosity in their hearts. By Allah, if my Lord were compassionate and merciful, He would not have done this to me." And so, animosity arose in their hearts. Then Allah revealed, "Indeed, intoxicants, gambling... are but defilement... So will you not desist?" Some people said, "It is impure and in the stomach of so-and-so, so-and-so was killed on the Day of Badr and so-and-so was killed on the Day of Uhud." Then Allah revealed, "There shall be no sin upon those who believe and do righteous deeds... when they fear Allah and believe and do righteous deeds."

[Machine] The prohibition of alcohol was revealed in two tribes from the Ansar, they drank until they became drunk and some of them started to harm each other. When they woke up, a man noticed the effect on his face, head, and beard, so he said, "My brother so-and-so did this to me. By Allah, if he was kind and compassionate, he wouldn't have done this to me." They were brothers without any grudges in their hearts, but these grudges entered their hearts. So Allah revealed the verse, "Indeed, intoxicants, gambling, [sacrificing on] stone alters [to other than Allah], and divining arrows are but defilement from the work of Satan, so avoid it that you may be successful." (Quran 5:90) until His saying, "So will you not desist?" (Quran 5:91). Some people, known as the "mukallifeen", said that it is impure and it exists in the stomach of so-and-so who was killed in the Battle of Badr, and so-and-so who was killed in the Battle of Uhud. So Allah revealed the verse, "There is not upon those who believe and do righteousness [any] blame concerning what they have eaten." (Quran 5:93) until it reached, "And Allah loves the doers of good." (Quran 3:134) on the condition of a Muslim.

Allah then revealed the verse, "Indeed, intoxicants, gambling, [sacrificing on] stone alters [to other than Allah], and divining arrows are but defilement from the work of Satan, so avoid it that you may be successful. Satan only wants to cause between you animosity and hatred through intoxicants and gambling and to divert you from the remembrance of Allah and from prayer. So will you not desist?" Some people argued, "It is impure and it is in the stomach of so-and-so who was killed on the day of Badr and so-and-so who was killed on the day of Uhud." [Machine] The prohibition of alcohol was revealed only concerning two tribes from the Ansar who used to drink. When the people became intoxicated, they started committing foolish actions against each other. When they sobered up, a man would see the effects on his face, head, and beard, and he would say, "My brother so-and-so did this to me." They were brothers who had no animosity in their hearts. By Allah, if I had been merciful and compassionate towards them, he would not have treated me like this until animosity entered their hearts. So Allah revealed the following verse: "O you who have believed, indeed, intoxicants, gambling, [sacrificing on] stone alters [to other than Allah], and divining arrows are but defilement from the work of Satan, so avoid it that you may be successful. Satan only wants to cause between you animosity and hatred through intoxicants and gambling and to avert you from the remembrance of Allah and from prayer. So will you not desist?" [Al-Ma'idah 91]. Some people among the pretentious ones said, "This is defilement, and it is in the stomach of so-and-so. Wasn't he killed on the day of Uhud?" So Allah revealed the following verse: "There shall be no blame upon those who have believed and done righteous deeds for what they have consumed in [another's] property when they fear Allah and believe" [Al-Ma'idah 93] until His statement: "Then fear Allah and amend that which is between you. And Allah loves the doers of good" [Al-Ma'idah 93].
