Before the prohibition of khamr was revealed, ‘Umar said: O Allah, give us a clear ruling on khamr. Then the verse which is in Soorat al Baqarah was revealed: ʿThey ask you (O Muhammad ﷺ concerning alcoholic drink and gambling. Say: “In them is a great sin...” [al-Baqarah 2:219]. ʿUmar was summoned and it was recited to him. He said: O Allah, give us a clear ruling on khamr, and the verse which is in Soorat an-Nisaʿ was revealed: “O you who believe Approach not As-Salah (the prayer) when you are in a drunken state.ʿ [an-Nisa 4:43). When the Iqamah for prayer was given, the caller of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ would call out: Do not approach the prayer drunk, ‘Umar was summoned and it was recited to him. He said: O Allah, give us a clear ruling on khamr, and this verse was revealed then Umar was summoned and recited to hirn when he reached ʿSo, will you not then abstain?ʿ |al-Maʿidah 5:91]. Then ʿUmar said: We abstain, we abstain. (Using translation from Aḥmad 378)
The Quranic verse :”O ye who believe ,approach not prayer with minds befogged until you can understand all they say,” and the verse: “They ask thee concerning wine and gambling. Say: In them is great sin and some profit for men ,” were repeated by the verse in Surat al-Ma’idah: ”O ye who believe, intoxicants and gambling,(dedication) stones. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 3672)
[Machine] And the Quraysh said, "We are superior." So a man from the Ansar (helpers) took a jawbone of a camel and struck Saad's (a person's name) nose, causing it to bleed. Saad's nose was broken. Then the verse of alcohol and gambling was revealed "Indeed, intoxicants, gambling, [sacrificing on] stone alters [to other than Allah], and divining arrows are but defilement from the work of Satan, so avoid it." [Quran 5:90] until His saying "So, then, will you desist?" [Quran 5:91]
[Machine] The prohibition of alcohol was revealed only concerning two tribes from the Ansar who used to drink. When the people became intoxicated, they started committing foolish actions against each other. When they sobered up, a man would see the effects on his face, head, and beard, and he would say, "My brother so-and-so did this to me." They were brothers who had no animosity in their hearts. By Allah, if I had been merciful and compassionate towards them, he would not have treated me like this until animosity entered their hearts. So Allah revealed the following verse: "O you who have believed, indeed, intoxicants, gambling, [sacrificing on] stone alters [to other than Allah], and divining arrows are but defilement from the work of Satan, so avoid it that you may be successful. Satan only wants to cause between you animosity and hatred through intoxicants and gambling and to avert you from the remembrance of Allah and from prayer. So will you not desist?" [Al-Ma'idah 91]. Some people among the pretentious ones said, "This is defilement, and it is in the stomach of so-and-so. Wasn't he killed on the day of Uhud?" So Allah revealed the following verse: "There shall be no blame upon those who have believed and done righteous deeds for what they have consumed in [another's] property when they fear Allah and believe" [Al-Ma'idah 93] until His statement: "Then fear Allah and amend that which is between you. And Allah loves the doers of good" [Al-Ma'idah 93].

I was the cup-bearer of some people in the house of Abu Talha on the day when liquor was forbidden. Their liquor had been prepared from dry dates or fresh dates when the announcer made the announcement. He (Abu Talha) said to me: Go out and find out (what the announcement is). I got out (and found) an announcer making this announcement: Behold, liquor has been declared unlawful. He said: The liquor (was spilt and) flawed in the lanes of Medina. Abu Talha said to me: Go out and Spill it, and I spilt it. They said or some of them said: Such and such were killed, such and such were killed for (the wine) had been in their stomachs. He (the narrator) said. I do not know whether it is the narration transmitted by Anas, (or by someone else). Then Allah, the Exalted and Majestic, revealed:" There shall be no sin (imputed) unto those who have believed and done good works for what they may have eaten as long as they fear (Allah) and believe and do good works" (v. 93). [Machine] Abu Talhah, O Anas, go to this container and break it. So I went to a mihraas that belonged to us and hit it from the bottom until it broke. 17330 And Abu Abdullah al-Haafiz informed us, and Isma'il ibn Muhammad ibn al-Fadl ibn Muhammad al-Sha'raani narrated to me that my grandfather narrated to me from Ibn Abi Uways who told me from Malik, and he mentioned it in his chain of narration like this, except that he said: "A messenger came to them."

Messenger of Allah ﷺ was presented with two cups one containing wine and the other milk on the night of his night journey at Jerusalem. He looked at it and took the milk. Gabriel said, "Thanks to Allah Who guided you to the Fitra (i.e. Islam); if you had taken the wine, your followers would have gone astray. (Using translation from Bukhārī 4709)

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "May Allah curse the Jews, for fat has been made forbidden for them, so they melted it and sold it. It was reported in the authentic narrations from the hadith of Sufyan ibn 'Uyaynah, and there are other reports in the book of transactions, besides what we mentioned in the prohibition of its sale."

Abdullah swore by Allah upon you, His angels, and whoever hears from the Jinn and mankind that he did not order them to sell it, buy it, press it, or drink it, for it is impure from the work of Satan."

[Machine] "O people of the nation of Muhammad, if there were to be a book after your book and a prophet after your prophet, it would be revealed to you just as it was revealed to those before you. And there would be no delay in your matter until the Day of Judgment. And by my oath, it would be more severe upon you." Thabit said, "Then I met Abdullah ibn Umar and asked him about the price of wine. He said, 'I will tell you about wine. I was with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in the mosque when he asked for some wine. So people would come to him and say, 'I have a container,' and another would say, 'I have a jar,' or whatever Allah willed for them to have. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Gather in Baqi' at such and such a time and announce it to me.' So they would come to him and he would stand up and I would stand with him. I walked on his right side while he was leaning on me. Then Abu Bakr caught up with us and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ delayed me and placed Abu Bakr in my position. Then Umar caught up with us and he delayed me and placed Umar on his left side. When he came to the wine he said to the people, 'Do you recognize this?' They said, 'Yes, O Messenger of Allah, this is wine.' He said, 'You have told the truth.' Then Allah has cursed wine, its pressers, its extractors, its drinkers, its servers, its carriers, those carrying it, its seller, its buyer, and those consuming its price.' Then he called for a knife and said, 'Testify to it,' and they did so. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ took the knife and pierced it through the wine barrel. The people said, 'Indeed, there is benefit in this wine.' He said, 'Yes, but I am doing this out of anger for Allah due to the displeasure it brings Him.' Umar said, 'I will be sufficient for you, O Messenger of Allah.' He said, 'No.' Ibn Wahb and others added their own narrations to the story. Ibn Lahiah informed me that Abu Tu'mah mentioned that Abdullah ibn Umar ibn al-Khattab narrated it from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ."

[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Whoever drinks alcohol in this world and does not repent from it, will be deprived of it in the Hereafter." [Machine] On the authority of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , he said: "Whoever abandons the prayer under the influence of intoxication even once, it is as if he has lost the dunya (worldly life) and everything it contains. And whoever abandons the prayer under the influence of intoxication four times, it becomes obligatory upon Allah to make him drink from the mud of Al-Khabaal." It was said, "What is the mud of Al-Khabaal?" He replied, "It is the essence of the people of Hellfire."

[Machine] We invite you to testify, and he entered with it, so every time he entered a closed door behind him until he arrived at a woman who had a young boy and a wine bottle with her. She said, "By Allah, I did not invite you to testify, but I invited you to fall upon me or to kill this boy or to drink the wine." So she poured him a glass and he said, "Increase me." And he did not aim until he fell upon her and killed the soul. So avoid wine, for it never meets faith except that one of them is about to expel its companion.

[Machine] Uthman said, "Beware of wine, as it is the key to every evil." A man came and was told, "Either you break this book, or you kill this child, or you commit adultery with this woman, or you drink this cup, or you prostrate to the cross." He found nothing in them easier than drinking the cup, so when he drank it, he prostrated to the cross, and killed the soul, and committed adultery with the woman, and broke the book.
57.2 [Machine] Intensification towards alcohol addiction
Every intoxicant is Khamr and every intoxicant is forbidden. He who drinks wine in this world and dies while he is addicted to it, not having repented, will not be given a drink in the Hereafter. (Using translation from Muslim 2003a)
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Three people will not be looked upon by Allah on the Day of Resurrection: the disobedient child towards their parents, the habitual drinker of alcohol, and the person who gives to others and then reminds them of what they have given."
“No one who is addicted to wine will enter Paradise.” (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 3376)
57.3 [Machine] The punishment for someone who gives alcohol to a child
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Every intoxicant is khamr (wine) and every intoxicant is forbidden. If anyone drinks wine, Allah will not accept prayer from him for forty days, but if he repents, Allah will accept his repentance. If he repeats it a fourth time, it is binding on Allah that He will give him tinat al-khabal to drink. He was asked: What is tinat al-khabal, Messenger of Allah? He replied: Discharge of wounds, flowing from the inhabitants of Hell. If anyone serves it to a minor who does not distinguish between the lawful and the unlawful, it is binding on Allah that He will give him to drink the discharge of wounds, flowing from the inhabitants of Hell. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 3680)
57.4 [Machine] What is stated in the interpretation about the prohibition of alcohol that was revealed?
[Machine] The prohibition of alcohol was revealed, and it is one of five things.
[Machine] Umar stood as a preacher on the pulpit of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and praised Allah and spoke highly of him. Then he said: "As for what follows, the prohibition of alcohol was revealed on the day it was revealed, and it is made from five things: grapes, dates, honey, wheat, and barley, and wine is what clouds the mind."
[Machine] He stood as a preacher on the pulpit of the Messenger of Allah, may ﷺ , and praised and glorified Allah for a while, then he said: "Afterwards, surely, alcohol was prohibited on the day it was revealed. It is made from five things: grapes, dates, barley, wheat, and honey. And alcohol is that which intoxicates the mind. O people! I wish that the Messenger of Allah, may ﷺ , had not left us until he had given us a clear instruction about it. It is prohibited because of its being a source of disputes, idle talk, and a gateway to usurious transactions. I said: What do you think about the sixth one that is made from rice? If an ignorant person claims that a man has taken a sip from it and it caused his death, is it made from rice? He said: This was not during the time of the Messenger of Allah, may ﷺ , and if it was, he would have prohibited it. Don't you see that he has declared all intoxicants to be forbidden? He said: Alcohol is that which intoxicates the mind. Abu Bakr said that this confirms that the saying 'alcohol is that which intoxicates the mind' is the saying of the Messenger of Allah, may ﷺ .

The Prophet ﷺ said: from grapes wine is made, from dried dates wine is made, from honey wine is made, from wheat wine is made, from barley wine is made. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 3676)
I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: Wine is made from grape-syrup, raisins, dried dates, wheat, barley, millet, and I forbid you from every intoxicant. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 3677)
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , said: "Alcohol is from these two trees: the date palm and the grapevine." And Abu Ali al-Ruthbari informed us, narrating from Abu Bakr Muhammad ibn Mahrawayh ibn Abbas al-Razi, narrating from Abu Hatim al-Razi, narrating from Ubaidullah ibn Musa, who reported from al-Awza'i, who mentioned it similarly except that he said: "Regarding..."

[Machine] I was standing among them, giving them water to drink on that day. A man entered upon them and said, "Do you not know that alcohol has been forbidden?" They said, "O Anas, pour it out." So I poured it out, and I swear by Allah, they did not consume it again until they met Allah. I asked, "What was their drink then?" He said, "It was vinegar and dates." Abu Bakr bin Anas and Anas were present in the gathering, and Anas did not deny that.

"Alcoholic drinks were prohibited at the time we could rarely find wine made from grapes in Medina, for most of our liquors were made from unripe and ripe dates. (Using translation from Bukhārī 5580)
[Machine] Alcohol and everything related to it have been prohibited, meaning that there was no wine grape alcohol in Madinah when it was prohibited.
(The Verse of) prohibiting alcoholic drinks was revealed when there were in Medina five kinds of (alcoholic) drinks none of which was produced from grapes. (Using translation from Bukhārī 4616)
[Machine] Aisha said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was asked about gambling, and he said, "Every intoxicant is forbidden."
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was asked about alcohol, so he said: "Every intoxicating drink is forbidden, and betel is honey wine."
[Machine] I said, "O Messenger of Allah, we have a drink known as 'Bit'u' and 'Mizr' made from corn and barley. What do you command us regarding them?" He said, "It is forbidden for you to consume any alcoholic drink."
[Machine] I said, "O Messenger of Allah, we make a drink from honey called al-Bit' and a drink from barley called al-Mizr, and they both intoxicate." The Prophet ﷺ said, "Every intoxicant is forbidden." Both of these were mentioned in an authentic narration by Shu'bah, and Bukhari mentioned it through the narration of Abu Dawud al-Tayalisi.
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ sent me and Muadh to Yemen and said, "Go and call people to Islam, make it easy for them and do not make it difficult. Give glad tidings and do not create aversion." I said, "O Messenger of Allah, inform me about two drinks that we used to prepare in Yemen: one made from honey and we would leave it until it became strong, and the other made from corn, barley, and dates, and we would leave it until it became strong." The Prophet ﷺ had been given comprehensive knowledge and wisdom and he said, "I prohibit every intoxicating drink from prayer." So we set off.
Yes. Thereupon Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Every intoxicant is forbidden. Verily Allah the Exalted and Majestic, made a covenant to those who drank intoxicants to make their drink Tinat al-Khabal. They said: Messenger of Allah, what is Tinat a]-Khabal? He said: It is the sweat of the denizens of Hell or the discharge of the denizens of Hell. (Using translation from Muslim 2002)
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ recited a verse while he was on the pulpit mentioning wine. Abu Wahb al-Jayshani stood up and asked him about "al-Mizr." He asked, "What is al-Mizr?" The Prophet ﷺ replied, "It is something made from grains." Then, the Prophet ﷺ said, "Every intoxicant is prohibited," repeating it three times. This is how the message came.
[Machine] I asked the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , and said, "O Messenger of Allah, we live in a cold land where we engage in strenuous work. We take a drink made from this wheat to fortify ourselves for our work and against the cold of our land." He asked, "Does it cause intoxication?" I said, "Yes." He said, "Then avoid it." Then I approached him again and said the same thing. He asked, "Does it cause intoxication?" I said, "Yes." He said, "Then avoid it." Then I said, "But people cannot give it up." He said, "If they do not give it up, then kill them." And so on.

[Machine] He said, "I came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, 'O Messenger of Allah, we are in a cold land with intense cold, and we make a drink from wheat. Is it permissible, O Prophet of Allah?' He said, 'Isn't it intoxicating?' They said, 'Yes.' He said, 'Then indeed it is prohibited.'"

[Machine] About Umm Habiba, the wife of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ , it is narrated that some people from the people of Yemen came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ . He taught them the prayer, the sunnah (recommended actions), and the obligatory acts of worship. Then they said, "O Messenger of Allah, we have a drink that we make from wheat and barley." Al-Ghubayraa' (a companion of the Prophet) asked them, "Do you feed it to your camels?" They replied, "Yes." He said, "Do not feed it to them." Two days later, they mentioned it to him again, and he asked them the same question, and they gave the same answer. He again said, "Do not feed it to them." Then, when they were about to depart, they asked him again about it, and he asked them the same question, to which they once again replied in the affirmative. He then said, "Do not feed it to them."
