11. Fasting (13/14)
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came out to us, wanting to inform us about the Night of Decree. Two Muslim men argued, so the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "I came out to you wanting to inform you about the Night of Decree. It was between so-and-so and so-and-so, but it was lifted. Perhaps it is for the best. So seek it in the last ten nights, on the 25th, 27th, and 29th."
11.135 [Machine] Encouragement to seek it on the night of the twenty-seventh.
[Machine] "It is the night of the twenty-seventh, so I asked Abu Al-Mundhir: 'By what do you say this?' He replied: 'By the verse or the sign that the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: "From that day, the sun rises without rays."' "
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ informed us that on that day, the sun rises without any rays.
[Machine] We memorized the night of Al-Qadr with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ , then he said, "Which among you remembers when the moon rose and it was like half a date palm branch?"
[Machine] A man came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and asked him about the Night of Decree. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Which one of you remembers the Night of Al-Sahbaat?" Abdullah said, "By Allah, I remember it, O Messenger of Allah, with my father and my mother. And I have dates in my hand that I eat as Suhur while being hidden behind the back of a saddle during the pre-dawn time, and that is when the moon rises."
[Machine] The night of the Decree is the 27th night; Abu Dawood al-Tayalisi mentioned it and Mu'adh ibn Mu'adh narrated it.
The Prophet ﷺ as saying: Lailat al-qadr is the twenty-seventh night (of Ramadan) (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 1386)
[Machine] A man came to the Prophet ﷺ and said, "O Messenger of Allah, I am an old and sickly man who struggles to stay up at night. Command me to do something during a specific night that Allah may grant me success on the Night of Decree." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him, "You should observe the seventh night."
[Machine] Ibn Abbas called upon Umar and the Companions of the Prophet ﷺ and asked them about the Night of Decree. They all agreed that it is in the last ten nights. So I said to Umar, "I know and I think which night it is." He asked, "Which night is it?" I said, "The seventh night, whether it passes or remains from the last ten nights." He asked, "How do you know?" I said, "I know because Allah created seven heavens and seven earths, and He created seven days, and surely time revolves in seven (days), and He created the human being with seven organs for eating and prostrating, and circumambulation (around the Kaaba) is seven, and there are seven mountains." So Umar said, "You have indeed realized something that we did not realize."

11.136 [Machine] Working in the last ten nights of Ramadan.
[Machine] The Prophet of Allah ﷺ used to revive the nights and wake up his family during the last ten nights of Ramadan, and he would tighten his waist belt.
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ used to exert great effort during the last ten nights of Ramadan, more than he would in any other time.
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ used to uncover himself and seclude himself from women in the last ten nights of Ramadan.
11.137 [Machine] Al-i'tikaf
The Prophet ﷺ used to observe I'tikaf during ten days of Ramadan every year. But when the year in which he died, he observed I'tikaf for twenty days. (Using translation from Abū Dāʾūd 2466)
The Prophet ﷺ used to spend the last ten days of Ramadan in I’tikaf. One year he was traveling, so the following year he spent twenty days in I’tikaf. (Using translation from Ibn Mājah 1770)
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , used to observe voluntary seclusion during the last ten days of Ramadan when he was residing, and during the next year he observed voluntary seclusion for twenty days when he was traveling.
11.138 [Machine] Confirmation of iʿtikāf in the last ten days of Ramadan and its permissibility in the first and middle ten days, and in Shawwal and others.
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to observe i'tikaf during the last ten nights of Ramadan, and he would recite the hadeeth of Yahya.
I observed i'tikaf in the first ten (nights and days) in order to seek that night (Lailat-ul-Qadr). I then observed i'tikaf in the middle ten days. Then (an angel) was sent to me and I was told that this (night) is among the last ten (nights). He who among you likes to observe i'tikaf should do so; and the people observed it along with him, and he (the Holy Prophet) said: That (Lailat-ul-Qadr) was shown to me on an odd (night) and I (saw in the dream) that I was prostrating in the morning in clay and water. So in the morning of the twenty-first night when he (the Holy Prophet) got up for dawn (prayer). there was a rainfall and the mosque dripped, and I saw clay and water. When he came out after completing the morning prayer (I saw) that his forehead and the tip of his nose had (traces) of clay and water, and that was the twenty-first night among the last ten (nights). (Using translation from Muslim 1167c)
when the Messenger of Allah ( ﷺ) decided to observe i'tikaf, he prayed in the morning and then went to the place of his i'tikaf, and he commanded that a tent should be pitched for him, and it was pitched. He (once) decided to observe i'tikaf in the last ten days of Ramadan. Zainab (the wife of the Holy Prophet) commanded that a tent should be pitched for her. It was pitched accordingly. And some other wives of Allah's Apostle ( ﷺ) commanded that tents should be pitched for them too. And they were pitched. When the Messenger of Allah (may peace he upon him) offered the morning prayer, he looked and found (so many) tents. Thereupon he said: What is this virtue that these (ladies) have decided to acquire? He commanded his tent to be struck and abandoned i'tikaf in the month of Ramadan and postponed it to the first ten days of Shawwal. (Using translation from Muslim 1173a)
11.139 [Machine] I'tikaf in the mosque
[Machine] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to observe iʿtikāf in the last ten days of Ramadan. Nāfiʿ reported that Abdullah (ibn Umar) showed him the place where the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to observe iʿtikāf in the mosque.
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ used to lean his head towards me when he was in seclusion, so I would put my feet out for him. He would not enter the house except for a person's need, and Aisha said, "He used to enter upon me while his head was in the mosque, so I would put my feet out for him." It is also narrated from Urwa and Amrah that it is as if he narrated it from Malik, on the narration of Layth and Yunus. As for Malik, he said about it from Urwa and Amrah.
[Machine] Narrated Aisha, the wife of Prophet Muhammad, may ﷺ , said that the Prophet used to observe I'tikaf (seclusion for worship) during the last ten days of Ramadan until Allah (God) took him. After him, his wives also observed I'tikaf. The Sunnah (tradition) of I'tikaf is that one should not leave except for necessities and should not return while being sick or have any physical contact with women. And I'tikaf should only be observed in a congregational mosque. The Sunnah for those who observe I'tikaf is to fast.
[Machine] Ibn Abbas and Al-Hasan said, "Do not seclude yourself except in a mosque where prayers are established."
[Machine] Indeed, the most hated things to Allah are innovations (in religion), and among the innovations is seclusion in the mosques that are in the neighborhoods.
[Machine] That the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "There is no i'tikaf except in the Masjid al-Haram, or he said except in the three mosques." So Abdullah said, "Perhaps you forgot and they have preserved, or you made a mistake and they doubt me."
11.140 [Machine] The one in seclusion takes his head out of the mosque to wash it with some of his family.
[Machine] The Prophet ﷺ used to put his head out of the mosque while he was in retreat, so I would wash it while I was menstruating.
11.141 [Machine] The person in I'tikaf is fasting.
[Machine] "He (someone) said to the Prophet, ﷺ , on the Day of Ji'rana, 'O Messenger of Allah, ﷺ , I have a day in which I observe solitude.' The Prophet, ﷺ , said, 'Go and observe solitude and fast on that day.' Abu 'Abdul Rahman As-Sulami and Abu Bakr Ibn Al-Harith Al-Faqih informed us, they said: 'Ali Ibn 'Umar Al-Hafidh said: Ibn Budayl attributed this narration to 'Umar, although he is weak in hadith.' Ali said, 'I heard Abu Bakr An-Naysaburi saying: This is a rejected (Munkar) narration, because the trustworthy companions of 'Amr Ibn Dinar did not mention it from him, such as Ibn Jurayj, Ibn 'Uyaynah, Hammad Ibn Salamah, Hammad Ibn Zaid, and others. [Machine] To stay in seclusion in the mosque and observe fasting, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was asked by someone who had converted to Islam. He commanded him to fulfill his vow, mentioning the vow of fasting along with seclusion. This strange incident was narrated exclusively by Sa'id bin Bashir, on the authority of 'Ubaidullah. And Allah knows best.
[Machine] Aisha mentioned in a hadith, and at the end the Sunnah is for someone who observes fasting. His mention has passed in this part like this.

We performed Itikaf with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ during the middle ten days of Ramadan. When the twenty-first (night of Ramadan) came, he commanded us to keep on Itikaf and said, 'Whoever has performed Itikaf with me should continue it. I have been shown that tonight is the Night of Decree. So search for it in the odd nights of the last ten nights of Ramadan. I saw myself prostrating in mud and water on that night. [Machine] Aisha, the wife of the Prophet ﷺ , narrated that the Prophet ﷺ used to observe i'tikaf during the last ten days of Ramadan until his death. After him, his wives also observed i'tikaf. The Sunnah (recommended practice) regarding i'tikaf is that one should not leave except for necessary matters that cannot be avoided, should not return while being sick, should not have sexual relations with his wife, and should observe i'tikaf only in a congregation mosque. The Sunnah for those observing i'tikaf is to fast.

Safiya, the wife of the Prophet ﷺ told me that she went to Messenger of Allah ﷺ to visit him in the mosque while he was in Iʿtikaf in the last ten days of Ramadan. She had a talk with him for a while, then she got up in order to return home. The Prophet ﷺ accompanied her. When they reached the gate of the mosque, opposite the door of Um-Salama, two Ansari men were passing by and they greeted Allah's Apostle . He told them: Do not run away! And said, "She is (my wife) Safiya bint Huyai." Both of them said, "Subhan Allah, (How dare we think of any evil) O Messenger of Allah ﷺ!" And they felt it. The Prophet said (to them), "Satan reaches everywhere in the human body as blood reaches in it, (everywhere in one's body). I was afraid lest Satan might insert an evil thought in your minds." Messenger of Allah ﷺ mentioned that he would practice Iʿtikaf in the last ten days of Ramadan. ʿAisha asked his permission to perform Iʿtikaf and he permitted her. Hafsa asked ʿAisha to take his permission for her, and she did so. When Zainab bint Jahsh saw that, she ordered a tent to be pitched for her and it was pitched for her. Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to proceed to his tent after the prayer. So, he saw the tents ans asked, "What is this?" He was told that those were the tents of Aisha, Hafsa, and Zainab. Allah's Apostle said, "Is it righteousness which they intended by doing so? I am not going to perform Iʿtikaf." So he returned home. When the fasting month was over, he performed Itikar for ten days in the month of Shawwal. (Using translation from Bukhārī 2045)
